Perfect timing OP ;)

Anyone have feedback and advice? Still need to do the guns but not sure how AND basing.. someone suggested something green but i am just not sure yet. Could really use some advice
>>
>>54556454
I'd darken the bases. Moreso, add some shade/black to the recesses to make the 'white' pop out more.

>>
>>54556727
It shrinks as it dries. Dont slather it on super thick, but if you go at it with a large brush and cover every area, you shouldn't obscure any detail.
I've found black gesso great, white gesso pretty bad.
>>
>>54556679
I think whole model would probs dry uneven on those flat bits and look bad.

Then again, if it'd been undercoated white, all over shade would have been a nice way to quickly get the armor done.

The rest of my stuff is kinda no man's land trenchy. I like the captain to stand out, either calling out a charge from the rear at their fortifications or standing triumphant on claimed fortress.
>>
>>54556870
Green marble?
dude looks nice too.
>>
>>54556875
I'm by no means great at it, but when I paint a white helmet I like to do it like Duncan does in his purifier tutorial. Basically, celestra grey, shade recesses with watered down fenris grey, layer with ulthuan grey, edge with white scar
>>
>>54556904
i prefer this one, it has much more of a "i just had a battle in which i just fucked you hard", because of the very clear damage from some type of gunfire and the fact that its clearly leftover of some kind of building
>>
>>54556927
Thanks! He's pretty close to done. I need to clean some of the chunkier power sword highlighting and transitioning.

If I go with the first one I'm thinking marble too. I'll have to find a good method for that.

I'm kinda partial to it too, because hard-on for walls.

The ground on it is kinda urban though with a storm drain. Might need to put some mud on it so it matches the rest of the team.
>>
>>54556625
They're called Czech Hedgehogs, to build out of sprue you need to find a picture of them then stick three bits of sprue together so they look the same.
>>
>>54556809
cos i'm waiting on some materials from secret weapon. i decided i didn't like the basing scheme i was going for, so i need some stuff to make my new theme work
>>
>>54556975
Yeah, but its pretty subtle even in person. White is weird. Celestra grey is a nice base color that has good coverage and gives a solid base. Ulthuan is very nearly white but still allows highlighting with pure white, but the important step is the careful recess shading, because that is what gives definition to otherwise flat color.

Looks pretty nice! Especially like the little nurgling shoulderpad, almost as cute as the horror shoulderpad from the exalted kit.
>>
>>54556786
I like them but the left two look a bit too clean in comparison to the others. Tumblr noses work well on orks.
>>
>>54557712
Thanks. To answer your question; the ones that "work" best are green and offwhite since they follow the colours of human flesh in sickness.

You can, with a little effort, make any colour look nurgly simply by making it filthy and gooey. I remember seeing years back some black legion Plague Marines that had black armor with glazes that gradually turned certain areas of the armour a putrid green. It looked really nice. I'll try to find it for you.

Do not use gesso as your only primer, especially on resin and very especially not on metal. It's way too delicate. Fucking brilliant for getting a good surface to paint on, but make sure that the parts of the model which will come into contact with things have some proper primer on before you use the gesso. You only need a relatively light coat of primer under it though.
>>
>>54556625

I apply it with small pieces of foam. You've gotta ensure the colours contrast well enough and the details aren't too fine though or your minis will just look like they're extremely dirty from a distance. You should also use it sparingly, if the entire mini is covered in camo it becomes a visually confusing mess.
>>
>>54559058
I guess I'll try picking up one of those practice marines to try it out, and then from there decide if I should use that or the normal method.
>>
>>54559194
Its like thats what its designed to do or something.
>>
>>54556454
Your doing well, but you need some contrast. Inking it and then dry brushing with your base color would be great. Add some darker tones of red to the core of the blood splatter so it looks like it's drying like it would be after 10 seconds. I LOVE the shading on your greens.
>>
>>54559325
Yes, but if you completely disregard any aesthetic concerns you'll end up with an awful-looking mini, regardless of how totally authentic the camo is. I've made those mistakes with camo before anon, learn from my experiences.
>>
>>54556646
Like they said, be more patient with the white. Let it dry completely and make sure it's nice and thin. Also I like the feathers but the gradient is to bold. Make the colored sections a bit longer and the black should be like the last 1/5 go look at some eagle feathers.

I'm just got to say, when I started 40k (with Tau), I used >>54560885 as a basis for my first color scheme, and even though I sucked as a newbie painter, I managed this very well. It's a surprisingly newb friendly paint scheme in my experience.

Just basecoat with light gray and paint the darker on top of it in the desired pattern and dots. Should look good on models with lots of flat armor or curves, so Primaris might actually be ideal minis to paint it on.

why on earth do people start with big stuff like this? that's just asking for trouble.
Practice on infantry first. you won't regret it.

that being said, it's not -too- bad, barring shittons of mouldlines and the white paint being kinda thicc
>>
>>54561312
It's worse than you think, it's not mould lines, it's bloody seams. But yeah, I didn't thin the white paint enough. It was thinned a bit, but definitely not enough, to my regret. The commander in the cupola was my infantry practice for the pathfinders I also have.
>>
>>54561332
It's okay, anon. You can always strip it and try again. Everyone makes mistakes, now try and not make them next time.
Practice on that pathfinder squad before moving onto anything else, and maybe keep that commander separate if you do strip it. It's nice to keep your first models on hand once you get gud.

I've figured out your problem anon.

You're painting too fast. You aren't watching any tutorials or improving anything. You're gonna end up with a ton of badly painted minis very quickly.

That aside, you are pretty good at keeping within the lines so you have potential but you need to work on other things.

Your purple here looks to be one overly thinned layer or some bizarre washing has gone on. It should be a couple of milk consistency layers with a wash with a thin brush in the recess and an edge highlight.

Your white is way too thick. Watch duncan paint white scars or white armour on youtube. It has a search function - it should take ten minutes to learn how to do it.

Your metal is also way too thick. When you get a normal thickness layer on it next time hit it with a wash and edge highlight.

Your feathers are nice so good job.

Please watch some tutorials and try and improve if you are going to post so many identical quality models on here. You can improve in a day if you just take some time to watch tutorials and learn some techniques.

TLDR: You wont get better by repeating the same thing over and over.

Still working on image size and lighting, but hopefully this pic isn't too bad.

Any obvious tips? I know I messed up the oxide on the one guy pretty bad. I'm going to be doing my next guys with a new brass recipe I got from an anon here, and trying to make the metal overall a little more bright.
>>
>>54566254
i think the plasma gun looks a bit too bright and the oxide in general is a bit offputing but other than that they looks fucking awesome, like seriously though the plasma gun looks so off that it looks photoshopped in, not the energy part(that is fine) just the main part of the gun

Yeah the oxide problem is something I'm going to work on with my next guys. I will try to darken the gun up a bit though, I see what you mean. I was a little worried the tan/bone would get lost in the bronze if I wasn't careful, so I might have gone a little overboard in making it stand out!

Would be easy with something like plagues, may look a little off-putting on something like a primaris, though. It may be easier to patch it up a bit with some green stuff if the latter is the case.

>>54566366
im not sure if you already applied some agrax onto the gun, but i think just appyling a bunch quite carefully(i dont want you to fuck up the plasma energy) will make it look a lot more worn and nurgly, its just something ive found while painting my guys, if something isnt fitting in adding a wash over it and everything else(even a bit) will make it look better, by the way im not very good at painting so use my advice carefully

Hey WIP quick question. Last time I tried making a Tabard with green stuff I was told it looked, and I quote "like a mass of playdough", which to be fair was true. Looked at some tutorials and tried some new techniques. Would you say that these look more clothlike, and less like playdough?

Colour is way too blocky and your paint is way too thick.

The tones on the fire need to meld better, a more gradual transition.

Your edges are shabby and patchy, tune them up.

The paint must be thinned. It yearns to be thinned, it screams for it. I can see the inconsistencies of the paint on the wizards robes, the horses armour, the plumes, just about everywhere really.

I'd strip the wizard and start again. Horses can probably be saved with some wash, some edge highlights and some depth shade.
>>
>>54568123
Both, I feel like it's just easier if I explain I was more of a painter before I ever touched a model

I use to do paintings and portraits and I always loved heavy shading and wanted to do that on models as well so it took a bit of getting use to but that's pretty my style I guess you could say
>>
>>54566893

A mix of two-thirds Detol Disinfectant and one-third water will strip most things if you leave them to soak over night in a sealed container.

I bought some Primaris from a friend who practically slathered the fucking things in blue, so I bought a couple bottles of Dettol and some tins with sealable lids.

Let them soak in the mix and then use a soft toothbrush to scrub away the loosened paint while they're still submerged.

quick question, when you're done painting models is there anything else you should do to keep the paint from rubbing away when they're handled? Like sprays or stuff?
>>
>>54568885
yes it's called varnish. for plastic minis one coat of matt varnish is enough. for metal minis you want to apply one to two coats of gloss varnish followed by a coat of matt varnish. of course, you'll have to wait between coats for them to dry.

Hey guys, first post in WIP

Started experimenting on my second model today and while I've gotten better with the base colour I'm having some trouble shading the pauldrons.
Any recommendations? Do people usually do it in one go or do ya usually have to cover up with another layer?

Also, should I thin my paint even more? Having some trouble controlling it on my palette but I'm using aluminium foil atm, gonna get me some real equipment later today

I'm not sure what exactly you're doing wrong here, but something is wrong here.

So with this miniature I'd go over the shade you have with another coat of white to set you back to base (and yeah you could probably stand to thin your white a little more it looks like.) Then, paint the whole pauldron with nuln oil. When that dries, paint over it with white, but just kinda stay away from the recess shade.

Check out 3rd party bits sellers like maxmini, pig iron and puppetswars. There are hundreds of company doing aftermarket stuff for GW products and 28mm in general.

If you want nice catachan models you could look into getting the old metals from ebay. The sculpts were way better than the plastic kit even when it came out.
Victoria miniatures also sells bits with which you could probably do you own Catachans that don't look like they have tumors growing on their arms.
Mad Robot does pseudo catachans too iirc.

The models in the command squad are a lot better, but it's not really too practical to do an entire army with them.

The paint on here, especially the whites look like you need to thin your paint more. This will have two effects: you will get an even coat that doesn't look chunky and it will improve the flow of paint from your brush. This may already help with your painting. Imagine the difference between fingerpainting and using a fountain pen.
>>54571907
>Other than that, I've gotta stop shaking so much.
It helps if you brace your arms or your wrists together to stabilize. Fine motor control is also a matter of practice. If you are not used to doing something small like this you may also just need time to physically get used to it.
>>54572060
>Do you paint highlights with the tip or the side of the brush? I might have to get a thinner one
Side of the brush if you are moving along a raised edge. Otherwise use the tip of the brush when freehanding something. If you have a good brush that holds a tip well you should be able to paint fine detail by using the tip, a smaller brush is definitely gonna be helpful to a beginner though in terms of line thickness. Smaller brushes have smaller reservoirs though, i.e. hold less paint. That's important if you are painting larger things if you want to finish with one stroke, for infantry sized models that's usually not a problem though.
