What army are you painting anon?
Now that I had a few days to sit down, I was able to slap together the 3d-printed terrain I had been working on. I actually needed to cut a new base out for the Path to Enlightenment, since the one I ordered ended up being too small. Luckily the tools and material were cheap, and everything turned out well. The Path to Enlightenment is not a perfect 1-1 representation due to freecad limitations and the limits of my own skill, but it gets the point across. 7"x7" base, and it fits almost perfectly.
>>54508232
So long as the middle bits get cleaned up as you go, I really like the colors so far. Just too much grey in between the colors, but as I've never painted something like this I don't know if that's normal at this point or not.
>>54508242
look to >>54508238
>>54508247
And finally the Plasma Generator. The acrylic rod in the center looks a lot brighter blue when light is shining directly into it. It was the best I could do since I couldn't find a perfectly teal/turquoise transparent acrylic rod. Not a 1-1 representation once again, but it's clear what it is, at least. I think some of the sizing regarding the base compared to the top may be a bit off, but it looks close enough. I was looking forward to this one most of all. Maybe I'll make another one day, to have two or three. Unlike the other one, I can actually use these as Haemotrope reactors, since the people at the local store look at you funny if you suggest custom rules.
>>54508308
Aside from sanding what else are you using to finish the prints?
Rate my Bullgryn, was the first time ive got eyes done correctly.
All other times i've tried its made them look like they just witnessed their best friend get turned into a cloud of red mist.
>>54508208
We doing r8s now? Fuck my shit up,/tg/
The unlabeled ones are from the basic gw modeling kit.
>>54508362
>>54508381
Needs wash
>>54508354
I tried sanding it, actually. The material is quite tough, and wasn't taking to it well. Low grit sandpaper was just scratching and damaging them, while high grit wasn't having much of an effect at all. I actually got most of the layers out, but some were either too tough or in too small a place to sand down. I don't like some of the layers that got through, but it used to be far worse.
>>54508393

Ultramarines/10
>>54508412
If you want the armor to look newer, then only on the skin.
>>54508454
what do you recommend? some light Agrax or reikland over it all, because i have done some deeper reikland shading, but it does not show up well, but its enough to easily define the muscle
>>54508409
You did a good job. I figured you were using some of that filler goop they sell to smooth them out.
Has anyone tried shading Ultramarines/Crimson fists/any blue chapter with Drakenhoff Nightshade or another deep blue, rather than Nuln oil? Want to see how it looks, but I don't want to spend $10 on a shader I'll never use again if it doesn't look good.
Literally what does this even do?

>>54508516
its my first ever conversion, done around july of last year, after being in the hobby only like, 4 months. its a heavy stubber off of a stormlord kit since i built it as a baneblade.

I ordered some but don't have it yet so can't vouch for how well it works.
If the person who painted this guy is around, what colors did you use for the armor? I really like this shade of pale earthy green.
In absolute absence of Ogryn Camo, what would be an adeguate alternative for highlight the plague marines?

Do you think I'd need anything in particular for T'au models?
>>54508892

tips for putting down gold easily?
>>54510037
let go of your hand slowly and gently place it on your surface of choice
Anybody wanna share their Sylvaneth armies for inspiration?
>>54509972
Thanks lad. Any suggestion for the paints I should use for those highlights ?
>>54510052
For real though
>>54510076
I basecoat any area i'm painting with brown and then work up from that.
Retributor Armour is a decent paint for working on gold apparently, I've never used it so I can't comment
>>54510053
I've not done much but here's my sylvaneth
>>54510070
Ushabti bone for the fatigues, and maybe Eshin grey on the edges of the armor. I use London Grey from the Vallejo paint line for edge highlighting my black, so I don't know if you wanted GW paints or not.
>>54510037
What exactly do you mean by put down?
I apply it like any other paint and it works fine.
>>54510180
Brown? Really?
>>54510245
It's a neutral color that works better than grey with warmer colors.
>>54510245
Most gold paints contain red which works well with brown.
>>54510264
>>54510279
I learned a thing.
>>54509259

>>54510368

>>54510187
I'll try that. I use GW stuff because I don't really know other brands. What are the advantages ?
>>54510368
there was no indication of you not being done with that post. All you said was "Crisp"

>>54510408

>>54510417
Like I would go through all that trouble to mask all the stripes out and airbrush everything then just leave the trim all fucked
After getting this guy's box the day it came out I just painted him, and now I want to start an Eldar army just to use him this model is sexy.
The closeup makes the paint look a bit thick but it's better irl, it was done pretty thinly
>>54510450
you're the one who called it Crisp
>>54510463
I meant the hazard stripes
crisp doesnt really indicate a level of doneness
>>54510368
>you can tell from the way I use my walk I'm a woman's man, no time to talk
>>54510471
It also doesn't indicate an implication to move forward. A vague statement on the internet will never bring across your full intentions, so you should always be prepared for people to misinterpret it.
>>54508186
i always marvel at how detailed that mini mini-marine is.
>>54510525
which one?
>>54508519
no one noticed that the 2 shoulder pads are on the same side?
>>54510557
That was on purpose so I could have both hazard stripes and an aquila transfer facing forward
Progress on thunderbolt. Converted missing pieces and put plasticard in for Windows as I'm missing the cockpit. I'm using old fleshwash ink to match the rest of the army, and using grey for the underside. Wondering what kind of insignia and markings to put on it. Sorry for big pic
>>54510368
Kind of flat, needs highlighting but otherwise coming along nicely.
Grey underside needs cleaning up, wash got a little out of control
Still needs details. Previous paintjob refused the simplegreen treatment so I just said fuck it and resprayed in army painter desert yellow
>>54510682

Has anybody here ever shaded the skin of their minis green? And I don't mean Orks, I mean otherwise normal human/elves with a greenish tinge to them. How did you do it? How did it turn out? Is there a way to make it look like not-scurvy?
This is an rough concept of an Ork generator a friend is to trying to sell me on. Is he on to something, or not at all?
>>54511236
Sorry for the sideways image.
Hey guys I need some advice. I've been looking at doing some custom count's as conversion for an army I'm building, and I want to do some large Chainfists on a walker. Any suggestions on how to go about converting powerfists into chain fists? Any idea where i could get some guides for something like that?
>>54511270
Ironclad dreadnoughts come with chainfists, you could try to incorporate those somehow.
>>54508892
If GW is ripping off anything, it's most certainly not some faggy blizzshit. Not like Overlord is much better though.
>>54508514
You can make any paint you want into a wash or glaze.
it saves you when you don't want to buy washes you would barely ever use. like I wanted to orange plasma coils but I had no use for orange glaze other than that. So I did troll slayer orange and Lahaina medium and saved myself 5 bucks.
life got complicated, progress slowed down to a halt for a few months... but i'm back on the wagon! some WIP boyz and the beginnings of an ammo runt
>>54511706
I'm liking them a lot already anon.
>>54511294
I was thinking of doing something similar to these and then counting them as penitent engines, with the flamers slung under chain fists on each side and some baroque bits thrown on. Good idea you think? Or should I just get actual penitent engines?
>>54511706

Hey guys I didn't know where else to go but here for this question:
Are there any GW minis I could make into a Monk character? Or perhaps I could mix a few sets to make a good looking monk. I'm not having good luck finding anything so far.
>>54511991
When you say monk do you mean like a Buddhist monk or more European looking? And are we talking real monk or like monk from dnd?
BULLgryn-anon with another update.
I've successfully attached all the hands to their weapons. There was some hassle making sure the angle of the wrist was correct for the intended pose (there's three, since the three models in a minotaur kit are all different) but it seems to have worked out.
Tomorrow I'll trim the greenstuff, reinforce the joints with glue and see what I can do about that knurled texture on the grip. I have a few ideas for hand-texturing greenstuff. I hope it works.
I need to get back into painting my backlog. It's been a good year now, but mustering that drive to just start up again is eluding me.

Slap gubbinz on them for the most part. If you just swap out their weapons and add 40k ork bits i think that would be plenty honestly. Maybe file off some of the tribal stuff for the savage boyz. Honestly I don't know why more people don't use the AoS models for orks.

I would actually rather use this: http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/auto/primers/filler-primer-spray since the xtc is apparently rather a sealant. i guess you want to paint your models since this is WIP and therefore this is the stuff i use. I lean the prints with isopropanol since some filaments have additives in it which let the spray dont bond, then just spray the model and sand it smooth. Afterwards clean it with pressurised air if available. Depending on the layer height you might want to smooth it chemically before everything else but that is another endless hole of possibilities and depends on your material.

You're showing your age. The model on his hand (and the ones on his desk) are the old Epic scale space marines (6mm scale). The painter is (I'm assuming) the space marine statuette from FW that's been very heavily chopped up and re positioned, with a new head sculpted.

I've been working on a better Mauler Fiend the for the last two days. It's suprising what a few swaps can do for the miniature as a whole.
>>54514336
I honestly adore your painting style, but your pictures are always a bit shaky, sadly making most of the details unrecognizable.
>>54514768
Unsuprisingly, it looks really good. Especially enjoy the weathering on this guy and the strong contrast between the armour and the bits of skin. There a a few details, that you seem to have missed, such as the piece of metal in his palm, next to the gun's handle. Also i think that the cloth around his neck hardly stands out. In fact, it very much looks like a piece of his armour, and that is, in my eyes, a wasted opportunity for more contrast.
>>54514924
I suspect that the painting marine is mostly green stuff, with some parts from the 54mm Inquisitor range, mostly the old Artemis model. I've seen the Space Marine Statue sculpt up close, and it's much too detailed to be part of this conversion.
>>54512780
Those are one of the worst models GW has ever produced so you'd be better off evading them
>>54512780
Chop up the flamer heads and dry fit them before you add glue. There's no reason why you shouldn't try if the flamer heads are surplus bitz.

I've tried a few techniques and can't seem to get it right. I don't actually have any medium so I'll look into picking that up.
The potato for an image is the current scheme I have for each model (My praetorians were my guinea pigs so they won't ever see the light of day). The warrior on the right had the Fuegen Orange done last while the one on the left was Jokaero>Fuegen>Troll Slayers.

I have one-third of a squad painted up now. Twenty more of these guys are converted wearing bits of scavenged space marine armor that still need to be painted.
and lastly the Gorka and Morkanauts. One is made from a gundam Zeon mobile worker kit with most of the Wazbom Blastajet sprue, the other is made with a Funkopop Titanfall figure covered in choice bits from Imperial knights, battlewagons and stompas.
>>54514865
Thanks.
>>54515154
I see what you mean with the cloth, but I was intentionally keeping it similar to the armour, partly because these guys have so many details there isn't much armour left, and partly because I wanted to build on the contrast with the bright Daemon flesh. Food for thought though.
>>54515335
It's probably more laborious than it needed to be. Grey amour, highlighted as you'd normally do it. Sponged and painted on small amounts of vmc burnt umber for rust patches, highlighted the rust and also the paint under it. Then satin varnished followed by mig dark wash and AK light rust wash. The dark wash basically just all over then left for a while before coming back and removing excess. Took a bit of fiddling to get it looking how I wanted.

>>54515868
The red is nice and even, but the suits could use some paint chipping and dirt smudges on there. Also grot markings and stripes.
>>54512277
Just a comment about OSL in general. Ever tried using a torch in the day? Light is additive. If yellow marines are in an environment where their armour actually looks yellow, for instance day light, then there is probably too much light for the blue glow to be visible. If the blue glow is visible then the yellow needs to be painted as though it's in half light.
>>54516072
Definitely adding more black and yellow hazard stripes. Going to have to look up some tutorials on paint chipping as my previous attempts all looked off. I know the good stuff has to be done before the base coat, so I'm sort of past that now and have to go with alternate methods if I'm to pull it off.

The simplest way to get paint chipping is use some foam, like the stuff you used to get from GW blisters, or the stuff you get from army transporting bags.

I'm trying to get out of a six-month painting slump myself so seeing others work is good to try and rekindle interest.
what's the best way get a consistent basecoat on a big model (corvus blackstar as proxy for GK stormraven) without an airbrush? I already primed the thing in black. I tried the drybrush method explained in https://youtu.be/74p9eGwRAog but it didn't really cut it for me.
>>54512302
so much this
>>54516625
Your brush control seems looks to be pretty decent. You should focus on getting full coverage however, as your blue looks very splotchy. Try doing multiple thin coats to give a strong and consistent color all over.
Other than that, pretty good stuff!
>>54516625
your paint seems thick, water it down a bit or use some lahmian medium, other than that they seem like some decent enough minis, some paint overspill though, but that can be lessened with time.

Second minature Ive done. I like how it turned out. Few things I need to work on though. 1)the coat isnt as smooth as Id like. I THINK its because I didnt have an even prime. 2) A little too dark. Probably from the wash seeping into the uneven base due to poor priming. 3) After I get the collors fix i need to learn to dry brush and highlight. I feel like I missing out on to many details.
Thoughts?
>>54517302
For comparison. One on the left was the first one I did. It came from the 3 space marine paint set. So the paints were old snd the brush was medicore. I think its an improvement. Im working on a few more right now using different techniques to see what works best.
>>54517401
you need to focus more on getting a smooth coat, right now your paint is really uneven and thick (it's espeically notitcable on the right marines shoulder and gun).
Also if you've not already watch a few tutorials about the basics, other than that just keep practicing
>>54517401
Good try, but you should try:
Using a wash
Basecoating white/yellow or any bronzish color before applying gold
Other than that, follow some guides/watch tutorials

>>54518027

just kidding big boi I like the tank but I'd have went for a colour for the barrels etc. For me the bronze is a bit dark
>>54518027
Fine. I call a temporary armistice with the Yankees. Now back to your post. Do you want the tank to look battle worn or clean? In guess thats the best way to decide if you want recess shadding or all over. As far as markings go I think it looks good as is. Maybe add some kill count markets to the others side if you think it would fit.
I want to build/convert 6 zzap guns and some anon on an Ork thread a while back posted his zzap guns which used old spark plugs. I didn't think to download the picture at the time so if that anon sees this post can you post the zzap guns again please? Did you scratch build the chassis or use trukk parts?
>>54518198
Not deleting for anyone's ridiculous sensibilities.
Yes, I realize the bronze is dark. However that's just a basecoat. Going to be highlighting with Skullcrusher brass, as well as doing a heat distortion effect.
>>54518231
I already have an Aquila here, but yes, i think some kill markings on the hull are a fine idea. As for battle damage, I don't feel like having a lot, so I guess I'll do a recess shade. Maybe some light wear using that sponge trick.
>>54518318
Pic for reference
>>54508644
Ooh, that's me. I applied the green with an airbrush starting with vallejo olive yellow (looks dark green on a black base coat) and blended up about 3 layers brightening each time as I go with yellow ochre and white.
Washed the whole thing in gw camoshade to bring the layers together into a more olive drab sort of green, painted the details/edge highlights and lined the recesses with nuln oil.
Here's a line up of some of the other WIP guys for you.
>>54518357
i'll take a better picture of the guy on the left, looks more of a mint green IRL than just grey.
>>54518357
You dont have any trouble painting/airbrush with the arms already attched? I was was worried that wouldn't come out even.
>>54518391
There's one with better lighting.
>>54518410
Nope, but I use a 0.2mm nozzle and heavily thin my paints. As long as you have good control of the air/paint mixture coming out of the brush, no problems at all.
>>54516818
It's a sign that you should file the horns down.
All of the Nurgle models in Dark Imperium are cranked up to 11. Poxwalkers look much nicer when you remove the spikes.

How much layers of paint a model can bear before losing details?
My arachnarok has one coat of black, 2 coats of 2 different paints and one coat of shade. Is it ok if I paint it black again and proceed to give it a non-retarded scheme?
So ive been using this guide to paint my space marine eye lenses, but they keep looking crosseyed or the effect isnt coming through to me. I'm painting them green with: Caliban Green, Warpstone Glow, Moot Green, and a dot of Ceramite white.
Is there a better way of doing these? I tried silver eyes and the green glaze but it didnt come out right.
First Sicarian I've painted, still new to this (Previously just done 2x10 Skitarii and a Dominus in Mars colours). Trying out my new colour scheme, plus the layered highlights on the sword and using texture paint. I know there's a couple spots on the blade where the Evil Suns Scarlet wasn't quite right, but otherwise I'm fairly confident this is my best mini yet. Think I'm tabletop standard yet, and/or any tips?
>>54519534

Would it be inconvenient to make a single base for a single squad of Inceptors?
Was thinking of making a wall or building side that they come bursting out from.
Pic related to the idea.
>>54519499
Maybe White Scar instead of Ceramite white? It's layer, so it will look more like reflection tinted in colour of the base.
>>54519921
For gaming purposes, yeah very inconvenient.
Many people make things like that but modular. Each inceptor could have their own separate base that fits into a larger scenic base with exploding wall and whatnot.
>>54512277
Not a huge fan of Imp Fists but goddamn I love seeing people paint their models after them. The yellow scheme is just too good to not appreciate.
>>54519961
>Each inceptor could have their own separate base that fits into a larger scenic base with exploding wall and whatnot.
Thank you so much for that anon, I did not think of that.
Now, I gotta look up to how make an exploding wall with no past experience of sculpting terrain or working with the required materials.
>>54519534
>>54519548
I would put more details on the armour (lenses, gold trims and stuff), but it is probably just my personal preference. Blade has great scheme.
But I am also pretty new to this, so I wouldn't take myself too seriously. See my infiltrators.
>>54519928
That might be the case. The dot might be too bright or big, making them have bug eyes.
>>54520013
The rank and file will have brighter bronze armour with silver trim, and the limb stumps and torso side fatigues will be green instead of black since I want to keep the green going. I just prefer a somewhat minimalist approach, but there are certainly cables and rims and such I could have painted if I could have been bothered to pick them all out. Blue Skitarii always look nice, although personally I'd stick some more wash on those Taser Goad handles.
Now trying to work out how I'm going to approach painting Goads with my red-orange thing. Probably something similar, just focussed more around the prongs.
