BULLgryn-anon here with an update.

My original plan for the right hand holding the gun didn't work out, so I opted for cutting the ripper gun's grip off completely and then attaching the 'one-handed weapon' hand from the minotaur kit with a steel pin. The entry point is covered by the bottom of the Ripper gun grip.

With a bit of dremel and greenstuff I think I can make this work, though the gun's grip is wierdly long now.

What's the biggest one could get away with for the base of their chapter master using a Gravis captain? 40mm? Bigger?

How much shit can you stick on top of it before it becomes unacceptable? Can a slab of stone for example hang over the edges about half an inch off of every side and be okay?

I painted all his wires with the brightest silver I've got, and I'm trying to go over them with a glaze to change their color, but still keep a metallic-ish quality to them. Kinda a pain as the glaze seeps down over the wires and doesn't really stick. Had to do multiple coats after long dry periods. Is this the correct application of glazes?
I was using them before like a wash in recesses and even tho someone here chewed me out I still think it looks good for the eye glow.

Hey. I also returned to painting and stuff from a long hiatus.

I went from Warhammer to Flames of War to now Kings of War with Warhammer models.

The thing about Flames of War was that to play I needed to paint my miniatures, bacause in Germany all the FoW tournaments had mandatory painting.

I kinda recommand to do some modern historic wargaming (Bolt action for example if you like 28mm more). Why? Because you actually don't need a lot of colours.

I am right now back at 28mm painting. And I also do it more for the artistic/comf aspect. For this Kings of War is amazing. You can do multibases which means that you put all you miniatures of one base from the start. So you can do mini dianoramas. Or have different effect simply by positioning. So a mob would have no order and regular militray troops very good order.

Also if I come to game it, it is a very very solid system. Which plays fast. I usually play 2 games at a evening.

Also ebay is your friend. I completed to collect my 2500 point Highelf army for like 120 € (normal game size is like 1500 or 2000 points).

As for you question: sadly a lot. espacially when you go into fantasy/scify with its kinda brighter and more diverse colours. I have right now 86 pot of paints.

I recommand Vallejo. You get more for less money then at GW. But even with 2,36€ for a pot of paint that is like 200€ count to that paints and sprays and you are at 250€ ...

I guess 50€ would be a good starting point.

My glazes don't take long to try. If you are using a glaze medium you can try adding more glaze medium and no water to improve the handing and reduce drying time.

If you ware making a glaze with very watered down paint I think you did the best with what you had.

If you are doing more models maybe consider mixing in some silver paint.

Attached is current WiP, trying to figure out color scheme (boob plate was blue+silver paint)

Seems that didn't work to well.

Anyway check the op and dl pic related.
Best resource you can find in book form.
There is also the WD archive, if you snoop around in those any issue till the mid 00s should have articles on building scenery. WD usually always had a very nice battle report or campaign going on with a new gaming table or piece of scenery for each one. This was before they started selling plastic scenery.

Hey lads, about to get into the hobby and don't want to buy shitty brushes; I'd rather just buy nice brushes and take care of them.
Winsor & Newton have a very decently priced set of 4 (000,00,0,1) on Ebay. Will these 4 brushes be enough, if I were also to buy a medium GW base brush for large areas of base coating?
>>
>>54495880
I think a paint set would be the most expensive thing. You can follow Duncan tutorials without the GW paints if learn to mix what paints you have (small amounts of white and yellow to a base color make a nice highlight, same with a dark blue or green for shadows).
>>
>>54496503
I mostly use a 0 and a 1.
I use a 2 for base coating.
>>
>>54496480

You can do any size of details with how good the points are on s7
>>
>>54496603
I own a 00 for fine detail stuff but the point on all those brushes should be the same so I could be using my larger brushes if it wasn't for the fact that the bristles have worn or become hooked. My 00 sees less use so it is good.

I don't paint vehicles bit I'm guessing you'll need 1 really big brush to save time.

If I were to buy a new set of brushes it would be a nice 00, 0, 1 and then go to an dollar store for a cheap set of brushes for base coating, terrain/basing work/drybrushing
>>
>>54496603
I mainly use a size 1 normal W&N S7, not the miniature variant. As the other guy said, the points on them are so good you can basically use any size for details.

Can I get a recommendation for a sprue cutter?
Is the Citadel one good to go, or is there something better for a similar price?
Also wondering if they Citadel files are good. Can you also use the files for mouldline removal, or is it best to just use the mouldline removing tool?
>>
I found an old Space Marine Rino while moving the other day. It was only somewhat built so I placed an Ork on the Gunner seat and added a bunch of Ork stuff to it from other Ork things I've had.

Now I want to add Grots to it to hang off the sides and whatnot. Any suggestions for doing that? I was thinking of getting the Forgeworld ones with the tools and cutting some arms off and doing green stuff to make them hold the other model.

I've never used Green stuff before. Don't have any pictures because forgot to take some before heading out.

I've read the pdf for the green stuff. Any other advice for using it? Any advice for turning another army's model to an Ork one?

Please post looted stuff.

>>54497277
Citadel will almost always be the most expensive option.
For sprue cutters, you need fine side cutters, available in hardware stores everywhere. Get the smallest size they have. Privateer Press sidecutters are decent too. Tamiya is another excellent option.
For files, again, hardware store. Can usually get a decent set cheaply. Also pick up a fine wire brush, looks like a toothbrush, to clean the files in case they get gunked up.
You can use files for mouldline removal, but they work best on metal models. Plastic gunks up files, Resin creates hazardous dust and scars easily, resin plastics have both downsides.

That same plastic sprue appears in both Betrayal at Calth and Talons of The Emperor. Guy probably has a stack of those to sell. They're not the Forgeworld model.

My advice would be to get these:

to learn and once you know the basics of brush care get these:

>Been considering going to Michael's or Hobby Lobby but was hoping to grab them online if possible.

If you do head down to Michaels, bring a coupon; if you have a smartphone, just pull up whatever they're giving for your store. The best deals are typically 40% or 50% off one regularly-priced item, so just go back to the brush section and buy a nice brush for yourself every time you walk in the door.

Sometimes, they put brushes (they qualify as "fine art supplies", along with paints and canvases) on sale, which means you can't use a coupon unless it specifically says it also works on sale items. In those cases, you might get a good deal on multiple brushes at once if your wallet can handle the capital outlay.

The brushes from Michaels I prefer are Royal & Langnickel "Zen", Winsor & Newton "Galeria", and Artist's Loft "Vienna". I also have a larger Robert Simmons "Sapphire" that I use to wash.

I want to do a Malinax Knight like pic related.
Aside from the complex airbrush scheme that FW uses for those, which I can't do because no airbrush, how would you get that armour panel colour with GW paints? The trim isn't going to be too complicated, just Leadbelcher and then Agrax/Nuln until it's darkened right down, but I don't want a panel colour that doesn't match the transfers at all.
>>
>>54500030

It Does! I love the pink on all the guts. I'll definitely be using that Mathis for the first bits, but the skin on the contagion Lord is a bit too pale. I'll have to find some other colors to use
>>
>>54500121
>Leadbelcher and then Agrax/Nuln until it's darkened right down
Look closely at the khaki armor near the trim of the shoulder pad. You can see very light evidence of metallic paint residue left over from drybrushing.

So you need to very lightly drybrush black paint with metallic colours like leadbelcher. Forge World are also big lovers of pigments, so perhaps they used some rust pigment ( a very light dusting) to get the effect.
>>
>>54500213
So what, Abbadon Black and then v. light metallic drybrush for the trim? I'm a tad confused. Panels after the trim, presumably?
>>
>>54499448
shut up, dork
>>54500143
It's super sloppy, but the dickhole who said to strip it is wrong. That model's paint was properly thinned.
>>
>>54500322
Super sloppy? Like paint in places it shouldn't be because I don't see that?
>>
>>54500279
If you don't want to buy some rust pigment, you need jokaero orange, leadbelcher and a couple of the browns.

you should drybrush the trim VERY LIGHTLY with leadbelcher, and then EVEN MORE LIGHTLY with jokaeoro orange. then you mix some brown with the jokaero orange and do a super light drybrush again to help darken it down

then you need some lahmiam, mix jokareo orange and browns and dab the mix on the rivets, then work a little in the lower recesses where the trim meets the plate.

obviously this likely won't look as good as Forge World's rendition but it's the only alternative I can think of if you can't/won't buy weathering pigments.
>>
>>54499062
You applied it too thinly, the thicker you slap it on the more violently it will crack. You should keep it thinner towards the edges so it doesn't lift off the base. Also don't get it on the rims of your bases, otherwise when you ring them later they'll look all chunky and shit

Not the shitposting anon from before but your silver looks a bit thick, and so do some of your highlights. I can see where your brush ran dry at the top of his right pauldron. Pants look alright tho. Like I wouldn't say this is like strip worthy bad, and it's defs not the worst for just a normal guardsman who you're gonna have a million a of on the table. I would say that you need to dip your brush a little more often than you think you need when highlighting. I think your silver paint might be a little old cause I can see little silver chunkies hanging out towards the bottom of the axe head. Base looking fly tho anon
>>
>>54500418
OK then, I have that lot here, so I'll give it a go. Thanks anon. my skills aren't good enough to get a FW-perfect scheme anyway, I just want a decent enough approximation that it'll look obviously like Malinax and not clash horrifically with the transfers.

That's where you're wrong. There is always room for improvement. or even an opinion on an alternative color combo or something that can give the model more aesthetic, like weathering or what have you. And anons can ask about how he achieved an effect, or how long the model took, or whatever.

There's no reason why people can't offer praise to good shit, either. Good shit being posted is encouraging to newer painters since they see that painters who actually know what they're doing actively post here, which means new painters can improve more, feeding discussion and making the thread more entertaining. Ignoring good shit means the painter is less likely to post more, since he's not really "participating" since participation in a community is a 2-way deal.

Well here's the thing. You have a solid point and I agree with you. But if people have input to put in they will. Generally, though, the shitty/average stuff needs the advice more because they have a lot more to improve on. Also, stuff that is worse generally sticks out more than stuff that is good because not everyone can see where good stuff can improve, people will generally have more to say about something that's bad than something that's good. That's just how things are, sorry if that makes you upset.

I have the Factory Ground one and am planning on using it for fit all my Admech bases. Here's the first lot for my Cyber-Occularis, they're a little sloppy but good enough, and the next lot will be better.

I recommend rolling out a large sheet of greenstuff and embedding your bases into the bottom (then cutting them out with a knife later) rather than the recommended method on the website, it's better for larger numbers and gives a more consistent result when you roll the pattern on the whole lot at once.
Also when you get it grab a stiffish (not like a wire brush, but reasonably rigid) brush and give it a scrub down in water, to remove a couple of the bits of mould flash that cling to some of the ridges.

My lighter green is working out really well so far on my Rusties.

I thought they'd be way more difficult that they have proved so far, but most of the bits that need painting are reasonably flat.
Spray silver, all over washes, cloak, limb stumps in black, armour in bronze, little lens dots and swords and you're pretty much done. Not THAT much more work than 5 Skitarii. if you just want tabletop standard.

I find it sometimes helps to look at key features of the model and decide: this part was either completely destroyed or didn't work the way the Mek wanted, so he tore it out and rebuild it. Even something as simple as the exhaust design being orkified can add a lot of personality and make it seem like its been in Ork service for a while. If just one isn't enough, do another. I had a Vindicator that I slapped an Ork gunner in and a few random plates of metal onto and figured that was good enough. After a while I got tired of seeing a very distinctly Space Marine model in my armor so I literally tore it apart and rebuilt it, adding onto the main chassis, redoing the exhaust, moving the cannon to a turret mount, redoing the doors. It was a fantastic experience to kind of roleplay a Mek's process.

Question from a new painter: can this be used on plastic straight from the sprue?
>>
>>54505003
yes
>>
>>54505003
Use Mechanicus Standard Grey first. You can get away with a light dusting of it.

The reason being is that I've found citadel's color sprays when sprayed directly onto plastic have an odd issue that often the propellant will "sweat" from the drying pigment and leave you with a nasty texture.

I'm thinking of turning one of these into a Slaaneshi dreadnought. I'm not sure what it'd count as, probably a Decimator.
I was thinking of doing a headswap with a Daemonette and then painting the beehives black and grey to look like speakers. Any other ideas?
>>
>>54505862
its okay, anyone who really complains about colour selection is an asshole anyways.

as long as your not half assing the paint job, or just throwing glitter and pink paint nobody will care.

hell if you used glitter and pink paint but did it really well people would probably be more saddened by the wasted effort than offended by the color choice.

that said, if they criticize your technique, whether its highlighting or your colors coat (to thick or thin, things that you should be able to tell whether colour blind or not since its more about texture) then you should take that criticism to heart and use it to improve your skills.

either way paint an army that you'll enjoy looking at since you'll be the one who'll be using it every game and displaying it in your own game/hobby room.

Stormvermin Fur looks medium-dark grey to me, although sometimes the sprays confuse a lot of people anyway - Leadbelcher is darker than the brush version, and as long as your skills are good not many people will care what the colours are anyway.

My best gaming buddy is red-green colourblind, and a few weeks ago he got some corrective lenses for it that let him see those (which apparently cost a fortune) and spent the entire day running around exclaiming at all the random plants and grass about how amazing the green was. I didn't know he was colourblind until then, so it confused the hell out of me.

Anyway, he went to the store the next day and realized that not only were my Skitarii green not Stygies dark grey, the Salamanders he thought I was fighting were actually hot pink. Still hasn't stopped him being a far better painter than me, especially where volume and speed are concerned.
>>
>>54506118
not really.

the only thing i don't agree with is not swapping out models into the army or not having more than 2000 points of models since i think having deep organization is still kinda neat. Also not matching your opponent in bigger games can actually be a lot of fun but could also be disappointing, having varried armies to play against and tough battle is what makes it fun for a regular opponent. Nobody wants to fight the same army over and over again.

But having a set organization for the forces that you do have or naming units and characters and using them in concert. Making themed armies that work well but still fit a theme. Are all great.

the whole
>WYSIWYG
>always give your opponent the benefit of the doubt
>who cares if your opponents know your army comp by heart
>let the only surprises be your deployment and tactical moves
>etc.

are all good things too.

Whats the best way to paint Blood Angels?

>>
>>54506240
No, there's a Marine player at the store with hot pink/gold trim Marine chapter who incidentally likes flamers, so they use Sallies CT just for more FIRE. Not actually Salamanders, but to him indistinguishable before two months ago. His Nurgle is the usual set of greens, because while he can't tell the colours apart at a glance he can read the names on the pots.
>>
>>54506295
I prefer the second, the first is more Thousand Sons and the matt looks rather cooler anyway.
>>
>>54506305
Oh okay, that makes a lot more sense, I was going to say you guys were jerks if you just led him on, and that he was more than just colour blind if he used pink instead of green.

But more seriously that's great. Amazing technology now a days and its great to see that sort of excitement in some one experience things new for the first time.
>>
>>54505978
I always had bad experiences with spray primer so i dont trust it, and i figured out a way to do a watered down basecoat which lets me pick what color i want depending on the model im painting, but it uses a lot of paint and is a lot slower/more tedious. Also i gotta be careful not to fuck it up and lose detail but i have gotten pretty good at it.

So honestly its preferable to me over spray priming but wewladdy if it aint tedious

My Magos Reductor isn't outfitted for combat since he's the FW Titan Tech-priest and just has axe and mechadendrites, so I gave him one of those pistols. One time a big squad of combi-melta veterans deepstruck behind my artillery and burned it only for him to stride out of the smoke Rogue One style. The top hat might be a bit much for me but the Kharadron Overlord head seem like they would fit great, now I just need a safari hat like pic related

The red could use a little more highlighting but otherwise looks great! Keep it up anon!

Maxmini do a set of ten pith helmeted heads complete with officer smoking pipe, so that would be plenty for him and a retinue.

Agreed, red looks super-flat but otherwise its coming along really nicely
>>
>>54507975
Yeah, just found them, looks good.
god dammit, though, the last thing I needed was another army to build
>>
>>54508008
Yeah, I'm like that too. Couldn't do this one because I play at a GW so no third party, but I'll keep the idea in my head I think. Could be fun as a silly addon.

Yeah, I might make just a kill team with them, since I've got about one good army left in me before I lose interest in big armies and start making kill teams of dudes I think look cool. I was always more interested in infantry than vehicles personally.

i dunno i like the extra details on those rolling pins even if a stamp might work better.

So I emailed GW last night about my missing base for the carnifex I bought. Are they usually this slow at replying?
>>
>>54509348
Yes, i emailed about stuff before once about a job and once about missing parts from a Tau box set
I never heard back from them about the Tau box set
>>
>>54509424
I'm contemplating calling the number instead.

Codex rules say Librarians are blue, but hey, your dudes means you can diverge if you want.

Holy fuck why haven't I been using one of these all along. So much easier on my eyes and back.

So, for a project during the wait until the Death Guard codex, what do you think of painting a Mhara Gal in nurgle colours for a particularly warp-tainted contemptor? I'd obviously have to greenstuff some boils and sores on top of the parchment bits, but other than that i think it'd be fairly suitable. I've been doing my starter set dudes in a grimy bone and green scheme, think heresy scheme thats been marinading in the warp for ten millenia.

yeah i'd call them. When i called them about having two left feet for my cockatrice i got a brand new cockatrice and got to keep the new one.

returned the new one for store credit
and used greenstuff to fix the broken one :^)
