"Varying Degrees of Canon" Edition

For all your questions on Dark Heresy (1st and 2nd Editions), Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, Black Crusade, and Only War.
Not the wargame, not Chapter Master, not Space Hulk. Inquisitor is okay, but not many people know about it.

Not sure between starting Dark Heresy 1e and 2e? Pick 2e.

>Why did FFG lose the 40k RPG License?
Because they were bought by Asmodee and that caused some sort of licensing conflict.

>Will GW make their own 40k RPGs now?
Probably not. But if they do it will likely be worse than you could possibly imagine.

Book Repositories (If you're planning to download any Rogue Trader materials, read the .txt file in the RT directory)
https://mega.nz/#F!Pl0UgbJa!vDtTXMKnvZ26fUbuw4X9tg

There is a new Homebrew Megafolder option in above MEGA directory containing several things.

40K RPG tools, a site that contains stats or references for almost all weapons, armor and NPCs/adversaries. Not updated past DH2 core.
http://www.40krpgtools.com/

40k RPG Combined Armory (v6.48.161023), containing every piece of gear in all five lines. Now includes all DH2e books.

Mars Needs Women! (v1.2.15) (Mechanicus Skitarii and Taghmata for Only War)

Out of the many xenos races playable, which one irks you the most, or you find hardest to fit in your games? Maybe the Tau or their Kroot allies? Or perhaps the Dark Eldar or their more restrained corsair cousins? What about the Necrons or Orks?

There are homebrew rules for playing one in The Fringe Is Yours homebrewthingymajik. I think it was that one.

Don't really know why or in universe how you would play one, tho.

how tall is the the average primaris space marine?

and how tall is the average primarch?

A-anyone running a game of Rogue Trader?
>>
>>54486284
Nope.
>>
>>54484328

We allowed a necron once. It was basically "I woke up and don't know what's going on so I will follow you until I get my bearings." He played him like an old man Paladin, constantly rambling about ancient codes even while getting magdumped by enemies. It was pretty funny at times, but it was a short game.
>>
I figured this'd be the most appropiate place to ask as there's no 40k fluff general or something like that. What are the best 40k novels? I've been thinking of running a game but need to get into the setting's "atmosphere"
>>
>>54488862
I think there's a list on some other board. It also depends on what type of game you are running. Obviously, Deathwatch is a different setting than Rogue Trader and so on. I personally like the Ciaphas Cain series, the Eisenhorn series, and the Gaunt's Ghost series. Eisenhorn is good for Dark Heresy while Gaunt's Ghost and Ciaphas Cain are good for for Only War. There's also a smattering of other stuff you could use for other lines in those series as both Ciaphas Cain and Eisenhorn have Rogue Traders. If you want to run Black Crusade, there's the Nightlord Omnibus which I haven't read yet but people seem to like.

>An Only War game? Can we get a brief synopsis of what you have in mind?

The start of the game I have planned, at least, is that everyone has been shanghai'd and black-bagged from across the Ultima segmentum and beyond, chosen for a specific but unknown task. It doesn't matter if you were a noble, a hive scum, a former guardsman, or even just got unlucky on your way to the store, you find yourself aboard a massive voidship with no idea what is happening. The regiment itself is a secret, as is almost everything else - the point for the start is to have everyone knowing nothing, just like their characters. By the end of the first session, though, I'm confident that everything will be explained and everything will make sense. I can say a few things however - you will be fighting xenos and heretics and other enemies of the Emperor, so you won't be secretly chaos or genestealers or whatever, and you'll be normal humans, so no secret spess mareens or skitarii or nothing. I'm also restricting some of the specialties available - while all the regular guardsmen specialties are open and unrestricted, the only specialist open will be the techpriest. It will take place in modern time, so post Indomitus Crusade, though due to time dilation of the Great Rift, time is relative.

I have a call to players already prepared, but I'm not recruiting until I get my job situation sorted out over the next three weeks.
>>

I will be on Myth-weavers, but I wont be player hunting for a week or so.

How industrial is the Imperium of Man?

Like, are there brands of mass-produced clothing that can be found across entire sectors? Or are most "brands" feudal creations of local craftsmen/companies that are restricted to a few planets in one system?

I'm mostly asking because I'm thinking about clothing descriptions for my NPCs. Like, how customizable can clothing be, would it tend towards uniformity or eccentricity, and what are the odds of having lots of similar clothing items available en masse when they're not uniforms or if they're for special occasions, like tuxedos.
>>
>>54490745
There are updated versions of Lathe Worlds and Faith and Coin. Finally, we don't have shitty scans.

Ok, now its fixed.

>Party is tasked with visiting the head of a hive
>Mention offhand that the only people said head would grant an audience with are Nobleborn, Mechanicus, and maybe Arbites with a warrant.
>The party is suddenly fixated on either impersonating a member of the Mechanicus, or kidnapping an Arbite and stealing their stuff so they can try getting in that way
>They don't realize how fucking horrible of an idea this is, despite me dropping hints and almost flat out telling them "this won't work and will end badly."
>They won't budge because "MUH SUBTLETY," even though that went out the window when they started shooting people in the street in front of witnesses

This has made me rethink how to go about recruiting players in the future. Clearly I need to grill potentials more because I don't think I could stomach more of this lolrandumb shit.

Planets that have even the most basic level of industry will produce their own clothing - after all, its something that everyone wants, but needs to be tailored (rim shot) to the planet specifically.

More civilized planets will tend to favour Imperial designs (Gothic, Victorian, skulls n shit, whatever), but that doesn't stop worlds where geisha or war paint is the norm. It's a big galaxy after all.

Then it becomes a matter of preference and accessibility;
- Rogue Traders and Inquisitor's have the power and resources to acquire whatever accoutrements they want, and the more eccentric ones would have a variety of exotic shit that they had procured or had acquired.
- Acolytes and Rogue Trader crew would be similar, but would be more dependent on their superiors, probably needing to be on world to buy stuff, but there would be a supply accessible to them.
- Guardsmen would be dependant on their regimental quarter master, and once their uniform supply had dried up, they'd look for local replacements.

But you could assume that if the planet had an established Imperial presence, you'd be able to find your standard grimdark-esque fashion.

The Eisenhorn and Ravenor series are good - more on the High Level Inquisitor side of things, but they showcase a lot of the setting.

On the Mechanicus side, the Lords of Mars series is really neat - if a bit schizo-cyberpunk for some. Also has a good showing from SM's, guard and a Rogue Trader.

The actual Dark Heresy novels aren't bad either - and they're set in Calixis, so they have some good descriptions of Scintilla and so on.

Corrosive weapon quality
>If a target is struck by an attack from a Corrosive weapon, the Armour points of any armour worn by the target in that location are reduced by 1d10 points.
>If the Armour points of the armour are reduced below 0 or the target is not wearing any armour in that location, the excess amount of Armour point damage is dealt to the target.

Mixing armour
>Characters can wear multiple armours if desired, but the protective qualities are not additive.
>When an area covered by multiple pieces of armour is struck, the highest AP value is used and all other armours are ignored for purposes of determining damage.

So how doesCorrosive attack works if someone wearing multiple layers of armor. Does armor damage peel away item by item or only the highest armor is damaged and the rest of damage is applied to character?
>>
>>54497537
>When you make them.

How about:
- Unnatural Strength (5)
- Unnatural Agility (1)
- Unnatural Toughness (5)
- +5 Wounds
- When suffering penalties from fatigue or when Critically wounded but not outright slain, a Primaris Marine can enter a state in which he is able ignore any negative effects to his characteristics from damage, Critical damage, and Fatigue, and cannot be Stunned. He also gains the Regeneration (1) trait. The effect ends when slain or at the end of the encounter.

Should i give a harder limit to how long the Revitalizer can keep a Primaris going? I wrote at the end of the encounter because i don't feel like i want to give an arbitrary time period but i fear it may be too much.

I have a question.

What do people see in chaos so that they want to (role)play as it ?
>>
>>54505111
Mutations and gifts are a lot of fun. Sorcery and Daemon Weapons also provide a lot of options you don't normally get in an Imperial RP.
>>
>>54502462
>>54502593

This is why "at gm's discretion" is a thing. So players can be told no about things like this.

I am sorry too, i think i over reacted.
But this is a question which bothered me for a long time since i can't see a deeper apeal in the chaos faction, but always have 1-2 players who want to play as it.

All i can see are one-dimensional characters, maybe you can bring some new viewpoint in ?
>>
>>54505968
My apology was not completely sincere, dont worry. Personally I dont like BC too much because the inevitable daemon prince thing is off-putting. If you listen to the quotes of chaos heroes from DoW, they have an atmosphere that appeals to me and maybe recreating that would be fun. Coming up with ways to subvert imperial worlds is also fun.
>>
>>54505968
Essentially going as off the wall as possible and then though a few buildings for the glory of chaos, though that is only one way of playing it.

You can think of Black Crusade as the chaos version of Dark Heresy, Deathwatch, and Rogue Trader, all in one depending if you have CSM in the party or not and there are rules for porting over max insanity or corruption PCs from those lines into BC.

You aren't supposed to see either of those things, that absolutely isn't the point of Black Crusade. If you can't roleplay a character who's morals don't match your own playing it will be next to impossible.

I'm currently running a Dark Heresy campaign (1e, we had the book so we got lazy), I'm using the core book/purge the unclean scenarii and my players are doing rather well. They easily dispatched the first boss with coordination and lucky strikes, and they are not yet corrupted by chaos in an alarming manner.
I'm thinking on what they should be doing after they resolve the Scintilla scenario, and I got the idea of using the Blood in the Chocolate adventure for LotFP. I'm really loonking forward to them contracting weird diseases and candy corruptions.

Any idea on what to change, and how to place it in a 40k setting? I already have some ideas, but I want your opinions.

The Imperium is a soul-crushingly totalitarian and oppressive regime, and people still want to roleplay as Imperium loyalists... similar idea, just on the "deviant with no moral compass" end of things.

Not really, beyond it making you de jure the highest Imperial authority out there. Other Imperials are supposed to do what you say, but anybody else beyond the Imperium's borders are not going to care that much.
Xenos particularly familiar with it might think "Oh good, a human who will only betray me at the first opportunity, rather than one who will shoot me on sight!"
Astartes chapters out beyond the Imperium might give it some respect. But they tend to be weirdos.

>>
>>54483026
Regarding Xenos, in RT (only experiences with Orks and Dark Eldar), the only problem I've noticed is not to do with player personality but a LOT more to do with Mechanics!

Ork PC's are fucking tanks! They have such a high Toughness Bonus, and so many wounds, that they just soak up punishment and the GM needs to throw around high-damage weapons to reliably challenge them in combat, which risks killing other PC's with a one-shot. While with the Dark Eldar the problem is they're able to Dodge things so easily due to their agility, that the GM is forced to pull out weapons that are impossible to avoid for the other PC's.

>tl;dr
My conclusion is that Xenos PC's only really 'work' well when the group is relatively higher levels. When PC's are tougher and have better equipment.
>>
>>54516030
Other (minimally loyal) Imperials will at least show you a wary respect because of it. The real power of it is that it's the document that gives your character the right to sail out into wilderness space and mess around with shit.
>>
>>54519919
I'd consider using "Felling" weapons from time to time. And also just remember that the guys with the heavy guns are going to shoot at the Orks first, and so will only really be a threat to the other heroes if they manage to take down the Ork without being gunned down by the rest of the party first.

DH adventure idea.
>Party called to the site of a battle
>Inquisitorial stormtroopers and arco-flagellants managed to mop up some ragtag band of no-name heretics
>Amount of casualties was acceptable, but there was one problem
>One of the arco-flagellants never returned when they tried to call it back, and they can't find any corpse to show for it
>This scares the shit out of the inquisitor for some reason
>Party is sent to find it, combing through a ruined battlefield, with nearby crags and hills hiding pockets of heretics, unfriendly xenos, etc
>Eventually find the arco-flagellant
>It's twice the size of the run-of-the-mill servitor horrors and half-babbling through its warbled vox about its old life
>The one that its chemical super-lobotomy should've erased
>Turns out it's a space marine from an excommunicated chapter that an inquisitor captured/convinced to turn themselves over to the inquisition, then summarily turned into his killiest pet psycho-servitor
>The super-heavy space marine mental conditioning somehow managed to stick around in some form, and was left at odds with the arco-flagellant mental conditioning,
leaving it with a mind full of hymns and half-ideas about what it should do

>Probably wants to purge the inquisitorial forces, in any case
>Either way, the party is faced up against a servitor-space marine on inquisitor-grade steroids
How retarded is this idea? Should I drop it, or could it work? What could be added if I actually run with it?

What is a Sentinel's purpose in the Imperial Guard?

If I have some light infantry, might you attach a single sentinel to a squad? Or would they be grouped up into a unit of their own, and squads all be homogenous infantry?

Scouting, some fire support, and shooting the asses of vehicles with a lascannon.

>>
>>54529218
A glass cannon given it can have a multi-laser, autocannon, or lascannon but with rather low armor values, structural integrity, and giving enemies a +20 to hit it due to size. It also makes it's operator vulnerable to outside sources of damage due to being open topped unless if it isn't.

So anons, when that time inevitably comes when I run a Rogue Trader campaign for friends, what should I be aware of/watch out for in this system?

I've run Deathwatch, Only War, and Black Crusade but not this.

The freedom can be debilitating to groups with not enough initiative. Always have delicious plot hooks dangling they can pursue, but if they come across something random and decide to try and wrangle profit out of it, let them.

A rogue trader has a ship, which probably has a larger population than some small countries. They make their own clothes on-board. Besides that, no proper Rogue Trader would accept off the shelf clothes.

If the raw materials were on the ship yes. Making said raw materials will require vast amount of space and power. Moreso than what even the largest ships can produce.
Remember. These are cargo vessiles first.
Repurposing them to make mobile factories means you will have an output way lower than what you think. You need more power, some way to scrub the atmosphere, and space for the machines, someway to shunt waste heat, crew to run the machines, crew to repair the machines, housing for said crew, space needed for raw materials, ships to shuttle said materials... Ect.

They're cargo ships in the same way a galleon is.

Kek. Makes sense. Isn't Eisenhorn teamed up with an Alpha Legionary now too?
>>
>>54536505
If it's a massive factory, sure. Entire generations live and die in these ships without ever stepping foot out of it or being proper members of the crew. Travel can potentially take years, and ships that had warp fuckery and we're traveling for decades still came out functional in terms of ship stores and crew. They definitely have the capacity to turn materials into goods, and as far as getting the goods, they're Rogue *Traders*. Getting goods and services is literally the most basic part of their job description.

>>54545895
Cheers, anon, I'll get it in there.

So, I've got some bad news. Some of you might remember when I first made the MEGA, it took fucking forever because of my shit internet. That problem was eliminated when I got a 100 mb/s connection.

I'm sorry to say those days are coming back and worse than ever. I'm moving tomorrow, and the area I'm moving to hasn't had proper high-speed rolled out yet, despite the new CRTC regs. It will be rolled out eventually, but for now, as of tomorrow, I'll be on Rural DSL, 1.5 mb/s, and even less if literally *anyone* else is connected. I'm not trying to blog here, just giving everyone a heads up. I think Tome of Decay is that last scan, but if anyone isn't sure, say so now.

Story time!

I was running Deathwatch
>extracting high value target off a fortress world under chaos invasion
>had to reach interplanetary comms tower because continent sized sandstorm prevented conventional communication methods
>climb up elevator shaft via mag boots and defeat Iron Warriors leader by throwing him down the shaft
>get message out to cruiser in outer orbit for extraction
>roll 2d10; 10 minutes to extract
>vid displays show Chaos Marines gathering outside the door
>meltaguns are cooking the door, it'll be slag soon
This next part makes me super proud
>squad lead looks around; 2 down, 2 wounded, 1 missing an arm and right leg (group typically only gets hit in the right leg *insert group meme here*)
>rallies his men
>empties his bolt pistol on the observation glass
>mag boots activated as the Chaos Marines breach the door and the group begins a firefight down the outside of the 10km high tower
>Fate points are being burnt, the Emperor is with their dice
>Chaos Marines being shot off the tower left and right
>suddenly Obliterator climbs over the edge and begins to walk down
>canthitforshit.rar
>devastator marine goes down, his lascannon falling
>group lead leaps after it, catches it, mag boots back to the tower
>aim, fire
>001
>headshots with nearly max damage
>Obliterated
>Thunderhawk grabs group shortly afterwards and the group extracts
>Mission fucking accomplished

Are hot-shot charge packs rechargeable?
>>
>>54548070
The one shot kind or the 40 shot kind?
>>
>>54548087
The one shot alternate ammo.
>>
>>54548094
Yes. As a GM take liberties with the time it takes to charge one from a generator or by solar power but it's essentially a souped up lasgun shot on overcharge. It likely takes less time to recharge than a regular charge pack by a considerable amount. Recharging it in a fire may not be reliable though.
>>
>>54548094
>Each hot-shot charge pack is good for only a single shot.
It would be kind of shit for an acquisition if it is single use. Then again, the Exterminator and Aux. Grenade Launcher are single use per acquisition, and in DH2e you get two hotshot packs, plus one per success.
>>
>>54548312
The auxiliary grenade launcher is a strange thing as you could reload it in battle in all previous 40k games and it didn't cost another acquisition roll.
>>
>>54548349
I just assumed you could reload it in battle. I'm the GM of my game. Why wouldn't you be able to?

Nicely done! I love some weird environmental combat. That's honestly what space marines should be best at. If you just need some badasses to sneak into a fort, send the stormtroopers. If you need badasses to sneak across an irradiated hellscape, swim through waters infested with razor-fanged death beasts, and *then* infiltrate a fort, you send the Space Marines.
Question: About how long did your combat take? Both the one against the Chaos Marines outside the tower and the one against the Lord.
I've been running 40krpg off and on since the beginning, and I've discovered that I often find the combat grindingly slow if I haven't carefully prepped a scenario and basically set up the whole session to be a big, awesome fight scene. I'm thinking about printing up little cheat sheets for my players, just so they all know exactly what they can do and what to roll.
>>
So coming from some one who played D&D/Pathfinder exclusively for almost a decade, I've been wondering if DHv2 GMs are telling people what the difficulty of their test is?

+10, -20, +30, etc. I've been just asking them to make a test and then checking how much they exceeded by, if they passed. Should I forgot the old "don't outright tell players the DC" from D&D and tell players what the modification is?
>>
>>54548694
If you're using roll20 or something that automatically calculates the successes/failures, then yes. Most (if not all) GMs do it in case a player's weapon, action, talent, trait, etc goes off of it. Like firing full auto, for example.
>>
>>54548756

I'm lucky enough to have 3 guys that I've both played D&D with for years and play Warhammer 40k, so we figured we'd give DH a shot. So we're playing in person.

I think I'll just start telling them. It's faster paced and I'm not really taking anything out of the immersion.
>>
>>54548804
Yeah it's for the best really. It'd be kinda jarring to get X number of hits on a semi or full auto shot, roll all those damages, then get told "do it again." Plus, I've found letting them know how difficult a task is can provide a good narrative. Say they're trying to summon a daemon or something equally heretical. A Forbidden Lore -50 check means they're doing something that should require vast knowledge and experience in that area, not to mention prep. It also sets expectations. They know that if they fuck up, something very bad might happen.
>>
>>54504274
Nob with a megaclaw jumps on top of the tank and takes the fight to them
>>
>>54548500
Combat against the Lord was faster than I thought it would be:
> Squad gathers just next to the elevator shaft
> Villain monologue engage
> Ultramarine taunts the enemy Heretic Techmarine into close combat
> internallyscreamingwithglee.ded
> Dark Angel Devastator and Storm Warden Assault Marine win initiative
> throw enemy down shaft
> group cheered and broke for pizza; I was admittedly proud
First combat lasted 5 minutes and most of it was set up and dialogue.

Second combat took about a hour. As players were quickly becoming unconscious, combat sped up. There were technically more enemies after the Obliterator but the group cheered and was celebrating at its death. It seemed like a natural place to let them win and feel good about barely surviving.
>>
>>54548694
They should be but I find a lot of GMs don't think to. Unless they're literally being spoonfed from a splat, but if you ask for anything off script it's just a straight test. Annoying.

Just so I'm not crazy: Would it be safe to say that most voidsmen use non-penetrating weapons and ammo? I had an argument with another player in an RT game that all our voidsmen should be outfitted with hotshot las packs and plasma weaponry. >>
>>54549819
I mean on a standard navy ship they aren't armed unless they are armsmen and overseen by the master at arms. even then it is typically autoguns or regular las.

On a rouge trader vessel you can use hot shot and shit, if you are concerned with it punching through your Hull then don't they don't pen THAT much. throught the doors? yeah it will, something important like a screen? any weapon would do that.
>>
>>54549960

Very cool, thanks for the info anon. Would you say generally that high damage weapons speed things up? I think one of the mistakes I've been making (for YEARS) is sending too many enemies with high soak/low damage weapons against the pcs. I find combat's more enjoyable when every hit is potentially extremely dangerous.
>>54549819
Yes. Though I would personally argue hotshot las packs are not *as* dangerous as things like Melta weaponry, anything with high penetration has the risk of knocking out some sensitive system/causing an unexpected hull breach. I could see Voidsmen using things like modified chain axes and other high penetration close quarters weapons for prying open bulkheads/heavier armored enemies, because that way you're more likely to know exactly what you're chopping open.
>>
>>54553044
Tbh, this is Deathwatch here. Don't worry about high damage weapons; use what's right for the situation. Traitor guard are gonna carry lasguns for sure but you never know if there's a plasma gun in the squad. I had a combat where a Tyranid Prime killed the same player 3 times because of his use of fate points; he blew himself up with a meltabomb to kill them both in the end but he was happy that he overcame the challenge and saved the mission. Let your players burn some fate points. Emotional gratification off of a hard fought victory is what will keep your players going since DW isn't a loot driven game.

Player with minimal 40k knowledge wants to play a priest. Any resources I can provide for him?
>>
>>54553422
I've got some advice.
No matter how fire and brimstone he is (and it should be a lot), the only thing that actually matters is that the guy at the top of any given religion/cult is the Emperor. A ministorum priest should be able to give equally good religious advice to a bloodthirsty death cultist who reveres emp as the bringer of death, a farmer who holds him as king of a farming pantheon, and a wild man who thinks emp is the father of storms. Of course, that advice basically boils down to "hate His enemies and kill them dead".

I need some help answering a few questions. I'd be extremely grateful to any anons who can provide help. The only compensation I can offer is kind words and sincere compliments.

How do eldar war masks function? Do they just block the over expression of certain emotions? Do they block certain emotions entirely, turning the person into a robot? Or is it kinda like morphene with pain, where they feel the sensation of emotions but don't really give a fuck about them?

Also, what's the kill range on melta bombs? I have a character that was shielded by a wall of ice about half a meter thick. What I wrote is that the ice flash boiled, dissipating a substantial amount of the heat in a steam explosion, but enough energy was left pretty much burn away everything beneath the character's knees. They were wearing armor.

The wikis are too vague for me to be comfortable. I found some threads from 2011 about war masks, but they had a lot of conflict information, even in the same threads.

This isn't for an RPG, but for some fiction I'm writing, so I'm not really asking what the mechanics of it are in the game. Sorry to bother, but I just can't find anything specific anywhere else.
>>
>>54559522
melta bombs to my understanding are like shaped charges, so they penatrate the fuck out of whatever they are attached to,

with the warmasks as there isn't really "Cannon" about them is up to you, I think it would make for a better story, and would make more sense considering how exarchs come into being with it being like morphine.
>>
>>54557938
>>54559258
Flesh shaper sounded more interesting, I think I'll go with it. Thanks
>>
>>54559778
Thanks! What I read is that melta weapons and explosive basically pump so much IR the area around them that the resulting heat will melt basically anything.

I concur with you on warmasks. I felt that making them robots would be uninteresting, and if they really were overly emotional like some of the lore makes them out to be, that wouldn't be good either. Those could make for interesting introspective stories, perhaps, but not for what I'm writing.

Thanks anon, you're the best!
>>
>>54559522
>How do eldar war masks function?
Read Path of Warrior by Gav Thorpe. He seems to have established most firmly how war masks function and described it most thoroughly in that book. Also, fairly useful insight into the psychology of the Eldar even if it gets fucking stupid near the end.

GMing Rogue Trader, what can I do to stop my players just leveling the enemy from orbit with macrocannons?
Should I even try to stop them?
>>
>>54560776

Can't profit from burnt out rubble.
>>
>>54560856
Depends on what you're trying to profit from, right?
If it's some precious alien artifacts, then it's probably a terrible idea.
If it's just mining, well, a few bombs aren't going to hurt a planet.
>>
>>54560776

Nah - that's the kind of thing a lot of Rogue Traders do.

Find planet, bomb into submission, add to trade routes/mining concern. Kindof an in-between-adventures thing.

But it's not super interesting stuff... until the bombardment cracks open a Necron tomb... (which is basically what happens in one of the published scenarios).

Just remind them they can make more money by looting artwork and shinies, and greed will do the rest.

>GMing Rogue Trader, what can I do to stop my players just leveling the enemy from orbit with macrocannons?
You build a scenario where orbital bombardment is a bad and/or very stupid idea. But if they do end up bombarding anyway, give them appropriate consequences for it. I'm sure getting a reputation as cityburning madmen will hamper their trade efforts and make other Rogue Traders sneer at them for wasting profit.

And it should also be noted that its something off a genre trope/thematic conceit in Rogue Trader that the Explorers are expected to solve things hands on. Because Rogue trader is a swashbuckling space adventure to find treasure on strange and exotic planets. Explaining that to your players gives them a better idea of what you as a GM might expect from them.

>Should I even try to stop them?
No, just discourage them when necessary. It's not always a bad thing.
>>
So I'm trying to psych myself up to run Only War and I'm getting intimidated by the large combats. It makes sense- it's an army, there will be larger groups on both sides, but how the fuck do I handle a 100m battlefield and 1800 soldiers per side? In an online game?

Have the battle essentially be a simplified one on one between NPCs or dice rolls while the the main focus is on the PCs and how they do with whatever splits off to attack them.
