Did Maro keep his promise by putting riggers in Unstable?

I was looking into cards that may have some relation to the unknown commander, and here's Disciple of Phenax, a black cleric depicted as a rogue with a discard effect.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373520

I also found out that there are a surprisingly large number of blue/black clerics. Could it be that the commander is both a cleric and a rogue having the prebuilt as UB clerics + rogues, allowing players to build fully for UB clerics or UB rogues?

What are some fun timmy wincons in UG that aren't "I combined these 2 cards, now I instantly win" or extra turn chaining

I mostly want to durdle around and not incur hate with my Rashmi deck, but as it is, my deck doesn't really do much besides bore people to death with constant instant speed fuckery
>>
>>54480097
>clerics are primarily white so it would be weird to have Dimir clerics
>haHA here's a black cleric!
Esper would make some sense. Dimir doesn't.
>>
>>54480097
My point is that clerics are an overwhelmingly white tribe, and a cleric edh deck without white would be like a zombie deck without black or a dragon deck without red. Possible, but not really worth it.
>>
I currently have my new mono white deck filled with ice age snow plains. Most of my decks already have all snow basics so what is the spiciest plains art? I prefer old stuff so please suggest me good plains
>>
>>54480143
Different poster, but that would imply that all the decks are at least part white. I know they said they were ignoring the colour wheel for what decks they chose, but I kinda feel they still wouldn't make all of them white. So in my mind the deck's probably not white so it's probably not clerics.

What are some of your favourite non-legnadries you wanna have as a commander?
>>
Help me /edhg/, you are my only hope.
I have a problem with building decks, and I want one that I can keep around for a while without getting bored of it like I usually do.
I'm currently playing either Naya 5 power tribal, Bant draw power, or Orzhov life shenanigans. None are very competitive (Karlov is probably the strongest deck but still).
With Hour of Devastation making so many cool commander cards, I've been thinking again about what to make. So far I have a few ideas:
1. Mono blue Sphinx tribal. Complete with draw hating shenanigans and hopefully the power house cards for mono color strategies
2. Mono red with the new Neheb, his lieutenant will be Heartless Hidetsugu for lots of mana to burn (again mono color good stuff)
3. Ghoulcaller Gisa. Half zombie tribal, half sacrifice shenanigans. I like her because she has a sac effect and creates things to sac.
4. Scarab God zombies. Like Gisa but blue and less sac.
5. Rakdos oppression with maybe stax-like effects but mostly discard to keep opponents kinda drained. Mix with light land destruction and good board state.
I can only afford to make one of these (probably not even) so which should I do? Or what are other suggestions to do?
>>
>>54480365
you're aware that that is a valid commander, yes?

Planning on making a mono-red Neheb deck and I have a question about Aggravated Assault:

Neheb reads "At the beginning of your postcombat main phase, add R to your mana pool for each 1 life your opponents have lost THIS TURN." Let's say I have enough mana floating from when I attacked to pay for AA's ability, giving me another combat phase and thus another postcombat main phase. Because they had already lost life before my additional combat, would I gain R equal to the life lost before and after it, seeing as how the turn hasn't yet ended? Essentially, I'm wondering if these two go infinite with each other.
>>
>>54481173
> If you somehow have more than two main phases in a turn, each main phase after your first one is a postcombat main phase, and Neheb’s last ability triggers at the beginning of each of them.

I guess if you deal at least 5 damage to an opponent during the turn, then they go infinite by this logic.
>>
>>54481173

yes it works like you think it does

>>
A buddy of mine was brewing Neheb for a while, seemed like a lot of fun. Lots of earthquake and X spells. That would be my recommendation. Make red great again

I'm pretty new to EDH and currently trying to build a Brago deck
Would 30 lands be enough, considering that I have 10 mana rocks that, thanks to Brago and other cards in my deck, I can flick and have them come back untapped after having used them?
>>
>>54482022
Not unless the rocks are all Mana Crypt, Mox Opal, and Sol Ring. You should pack around 35 lands just to get consistent land drops until you can establish Brago.
>>
>>54482022
number of lands depends on your mana curve, 30 is way too low regardless. 35-38 is a much safer starting point that you can adjust later based on testing.

Brago's effect also specifies NONLAND permanents
>>
>>54482048
>>54482066
I was referring to the mana rocks, not the lands
Thanks, anyway, I'll try to add more lands
>>
>>54482022
>>54482066
usually the lowest land count you want is 33-34, and that's only in specific circumstances and you know exactly what you're doing. any lower than that and you're going to face a lot of very risky 2-land hands that go nowhere.

my newest rashmi prototype is the only deck where i've gone as low as 33-34, and that's because the deck only needs to get 3 guaranteed land drops, after which it draws about 2-4 cards per turn rotation and will get crazy flooded without a lowish land count

my assessment goes like this

Nath is good if you want to have a tryhard deck that either wrecks everyone's hands by turn 4 or loses. Also has the best answers in its colors

Mono-B has big black mana and other mono-B pecularities (Contamination, etc), and still have plenty of ways to discard people's stuff

Rakdos has the funnest flavor but probably isn't that strong
>>

I mean i can see why you would be running Dark Depths+Thespian Stage combo since you can tutor it with Hour of Promise but first i would get a Crucible in there. Strip Mine+Crucible even if it makes you destroy only a couple lands a turn get's hated pretty fast, i wouldn't personally run it, if you need LD use a Ghost Quarter to blow up Cradles and Coffers so you people don't think you're a douche.

I have a BW cleric deck using both the BW cleric commanders with Partner. A lot of the best clerics are in white, though there's some fun ones in black too. High Priest of Penance, Rotlung Reanimator, Skirsdag High Priest, Dark Supplicant.

But the white clerics are a powerhouse, some are very strong. Pack lots of board wipe, because you can have so many reanimation effects that you can bounce back over and over.

Inspired by this discussion, I'd like to create a jeskai deck that is all about drawing strength from the plans and powers of others - if they cast something, I can redirect it or copy it. If they have a nice creature, I can take control of it. If they attack me or a creature I can control, I can either protect myself from that damage or throw that damage right back at them. I spent some time looking into this and have a list of a bunch of cards that may be useful. If you can think of anything else that would be good to look at, let me know. Eventually I will have to extract a deck out of this, and if you think something I have added doesn't go with the theme or is not worth, let me know:

Jedit Ojanen of Efrava
Braids, Conjurer Adept
Mirri the Cursed
Raksha Golden Cub
Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer

And a few flip-legendaries, but I am not sure those are kosher, so I'm not throwing them in yet. I'm prolly not going to be shopping around too hard, which might be the most fun to build around in my case?

I was considering that as well; I had an artifact deck that I had taken apart and a lot of cards (Like Spinal Tap and Luxidon Hammer) that are laying around, it wouldn't hurt to have a W/U themed deck, but I was also staring at Braids out of sheer morbid curiosity.
>>

I'd definitely pick up a precon deck. They usually have a lot of staples and can be easily modified with cards in your collection.

Whenever people JUST use cards from their old collections, they tend to include lots of unplayable jank and don't have a fun time playing against more tuned decks.

Throw in Nature's Cloak if you want all your other green fatties to be unblockable.
>>
>>54488622
I just recently saw two of these in person for the first time. They really are beautiful but they're a pain in the ass to buy and are very expensive. I feel like it is unjustifiable until I own the power 9. 8th edition test is the pimpest set to me though, right up there with Summer.

The Future Sight border definitely looks like the culmination of the 8th Edition test border.

Instead of the shitty Magic Origins border I would have rather seen them actually update the borders to the Futureshifted ones or something very similar. They're very functional, show some more art, and let you see the mana symbols easier while holding them.

The problem is that wotc has never (except for these tests or "jokes") made border decisions based on things like aesethics or functionality; it's just about saving money on ink.

I don't deny that but people will dislike any chance. I think the futureshifted border at least has functionality to justify it. People would adjust eventually and it's better than the Origins border which people also complain about and it offers nothing except the holograph on rares. The old border will probably always be the best. It feels the most authentic while modern borders are sterile and generic.

Too few leviathans for straight tribal, but sea monsters in general can work. Walker Teferi can do big mana, or just stitch them together with Geralf.
>>
>>54490584
It's about as "possible" as Angel or Demon tribal, in that there is no real tribal theme other than "creature of that type in the same deck".
You'd basically need to somehow either ramp into your big stuff (which is pretty hard in mono-U as you'll have to play a ton of rocks and ramp artifacts) or play a control game to just slow everyone down to your speed.

As for Commanders, some good ones include:
>Animar
Gives you Blue for Leviathan, Green for Ramp and Red for removal and combat bullshittery. Also makes your stuff way cheaper
>Kefnet
Would fit with the control build, easily refills your hand and is in worst-case a good defender to buy you time.
>Sun Quan
SUPER Janky BUT making all your gigantic Leviathans unblockable is fucking great.
Also, nobody expects him.
>Surrak
Pretty obvious. Same color reasons as Animar, but protects your shit and makes you hit harder.
>Jhoira
She cheats shit in. That's all.
>Jalira
Can build a Polymorph Tribal deck with her and just keep saccing tokens to cheat Leviathans in
>Braids
Also cheating into play (pretty obvious that those are all good)
>Tromokratis
Great creature and would benefit from tribal cards. Also fluffy.
>Wrexial
Also fluffy and lets you run a milling sub-theme
>Zegana
Gives you ramp access and draws you a million cards. Great shit.
>Lorthos
You plan to go big with blue and he's amazing in that.

You'll have plenty of devotion all the time and Scry helps avoiding to draw small stuff you don't want later on. Also, unblockable.

I'd personally go for Zegana or Thassa. As >>54490780 said, Teferi is also good for it but you should go sea monsters instead of just Leviathan.

True, Sidisi Reanimator could also work, though at that point you'd probably just want to play a Reanimator Goodstuff deck that would probably be severely weakened by having the sea monsters in there instead of toolbox things.

The precons have always been pretty solid, even if the themes are weak this year. 28 bucks isn't bad at all. It's clerics.

It's entirely possible, but

-they specifically stated the colors won't be balanced

-it wouldn't be the first time the art colors didn't match the mana colors

-that pose totally looks like a group of cultists performing a ritual

-many black ritual-related card arts feature a purple glow - see the new versions of pic related or Beacon of Unrest

whether or not he's trash depends on your meta and the power level of your play group. He's not exactly a mysterious commander, he does exactly what you think he does: lets you ramp and swing in with big dumb monsters. If that sounds appealing to you then there is no reason you can't make it work

Mandatory mana rocks for a good deck:
Mana crypt
Mana vault
Sol ring
Fellwar stone
all signets in colors
all talismans in colors
mox opal
chrome mox
mox diamond
grim monolith
mind stone or thought vessel (potentially both)
gilded lotus (unless ad nauseam deck)
helm of awakening (if storm deck)
paradox engine

>>
>>54491441

I'm not that anon but maybe I can help? I've played a few different Izzet decks in my day, what are you interested in playing?
>>
>>54491688

I want one that can untap wizards you control to abuse effects like pic related. If it is a wizard deck (definitely seems likely, wizards are popular and don't have a whole slew of options) then I want it to win through activated abilities and spells, just so it's not a "push into the red zone" deck like the cats, dragons, and probably vampires will be.
>>
>>54491425

If it is clerics, it's going to have blue in it. I know colors won't be balanced, but if blue's not in the deck it's going to only be in the 5 color dragons deck, and I have a hard time believing that's what's going on.

while it does look religious, it's worth noting that all of the arts are members of the central tribe sucking up or showing respect to the commander of the tribe, so it's not NECESSARILY clerics, although I think UWB clerics is possible. I'd rather see Rogues or Wizards though.

the deck box also CLEARLY has blue on it. For card art I don't think it's as important, but for the box art, which is one of the first things somebody shopping at a casual store is bound to notice, I think it's possibly more important.

I wanted to make use of the new White Zombies from Amonkhet, so I decided to make a Esper Zombie deck. Unfortunately, there are no good Zombie Esper commanders. Only 2 that actually benefit the deck are Zen Triplets (Which benefits any deck) and Oloro (Because of the lifegain) But neither actually works with the deck.

Is it worth splashing into Red so I can use Kraum, Ludevic's Opus and Ravos, Soultender as the commanders? I like the idea of those two as one fuels the deck, the other is fueled by the deck. On paper, all of the Zombie love buffs Kraum up to be horrifying, meaning that Commander damage is a viable wincon.

On the other hand, there is fuck all in the way of Red zombies (A few exceptions like Neheb and Grixis Grimblade) and almost nothing in the way of other red cards I want to use in the deck.

What would you guys recommend?

Does anyone else find it really difficult to resist the most degenerate versions of their decks?

I built a Captain Sisay deck and really enjoyed being able to tutor for so many different things each turn. Then I added Paradox Engine and I just slowly morphed the deck around Engine. Now it's just a combo deck that wins the first turn you untap with Sisay out.

I just don't like the feeling that I'm not playing the best version of a deck but I don't really have a place to play competitive EDH in my town.

How can I use this? She's /fa/ af
>>
>>54496232
She's pretty open-ended. One popular thing is to lock down the table with Stax effects and use her to make mana.
>>
>>54496439
Let's pretend I'm new to magic and don't know what that means and google isn't helping.
>>
>>54496232
She mills and stax, although ironically I've seen issues with life total in such builds.
>>
>>54496542
"Stax (in reference to Smokestack) is a term used to describe a deck strategy that mostly relies on resource denial, taxing effects, disruption, and sacrifice enablers to potentially lock down opponents and make it difficult to cast spells, play creatures, attack, breathe, sleep, and/or have any kind of reliable board state."

Brago and Derevi are good examples of stax commanders, since they break the parity that comes with many stax effects (e.g. Brago lets you blink your nonland permanents, effectively untapping them and also abusing ETB triggers).
>>
>>54496542
Stax means cards like Smokestack, taxing and grinding down the table, denying players mana. Powerful cards like it are usually symmetrical, so you want something like Selvala to break that symmetry and give you an upper hand.

I don't recommend that to new players though. You can do anything you want with Selvala, every deck wants to make lots of mana and draw cards. Don't be afraid of throwing together something terrible to see how it works.
>>
>>54491425
The colours won't be balanced thing means that there's different amounts of colours in all decks combined, not that there's gonna be UB clerics. The balance doesn't imply nonwhite clerics at all

She is the singlemost flexible Boros commander, so it's hard to say more without you specifying more closely what you're about to do. You can play Gisela as voltron, Gisela as groupslug/mass burn and Gisela as stax. She shuts down a non-negligible amount of otherwise problematic commanders by her presence alone if you manage to get her out fast enough - notably she absolutely neutralizes Nekusar, Niv Mizzet and Mike+Trike, and makes Purphoros sweat bullets. No matter the strategy though, your key Achilles' heel will be creature stealing effects, so you better rev up the flickers and homeward paths.
>>54495446
True, but that doesn't mean you can't have a nice Boros deck.
