New painter here. I had no idea what "highlighting" meant (thought it was like washing) and so I ended up completely covering a model's black basecoat with Eishin Grey.

Would it fuck up the model to re-apply the black basecoat and then highlight it properly?

Update on my tac marines from a few threads ago. I've now painted my first ever face, following tips from Dunc and /wip/. I'm not a good enough painter to do pupils in the eyes, so I just did white with a light wash over it to reduce "crazy eyes" look.
Followed the feedback from one of the anons in the last thread, I decided to give my sarge a red cloak to make sure the squad doesn't get too monotone/dull.
Again, pls no bully, it's the first unitive painted since I dunked a few models in paint as a six year old kid.

Finally getting round to painting some DG. Kind of a test model. All the armour and rust is going to be oil washed and grimed up a little, but the basic colours are staying the same, base is unfinished too. I need opinions on gun colour schemes though, mainly just for the side panel, coil and plasma barrel.

>>54479183
Looks pretty clean, well done.

>>54478364
Similar scheme with some extra colours added in, reds and gold's or something to set them above the rest. Covered heads.
>>
>>54478364

Go with shiny black and gold with dark red accents, it will contrast more while being in line with what you have
>>
Going to start painting some plague marines from the dark imperium box soon, I'm thinking about a red colour scheme for them? Think I'm in danger of getting loads of snarky "oh are they khorne?" remarks or is it possible to pull off painting god specific troops in an unconventional way?

>>
>>54479500

It will work perfectly fine, but you have to work on the things that arent armor.

Go with an intense dark red and light green / light white flesh tome for the meat and they'll look great
>>
>>54478486
I mean I can't say how true that is one way or the other workout seeing yours, but thanks.

I spend an embarrassing amount of time per mini, painting them completely disassembled, and covering fucking numerous mistakes per piece. I am not a natural.
>>
>>54479500
you just need to make them specifically nurgly. rust, pus and gross skin, general decay, and heavily weathered armor. the colors don't matter as long as you enjoy it.
>>
>>54479321
It should be a neutral colour. I'd go for black, like on his armour's trim.

Conversion bitz get. Time to have some fun.
Techmarine I was bidding on shot up in price though. He went from under $5 to over $20 and there's still time for it to go even higher. Damn shame too, he was a cool metal lad from the Rogue Trader days. If only it was Buy It Now like some the dude's other auctions.
>>
>>54477282
Alright /wip/ general -
I am working on a guard/inquisition task force and want to supplement my troopers with a big swarm of arco-flagellants or servitors.
I have been considering conversion as I have a small amount of mechanicus and guard bits, and saw some really neat work online (pic related) BUT I am a total novice at conversions and, as i have only recently started after a very long break, am relatively light on tools, resources and experience.

How do you do conversions?
Where do you get the little grey bits of non-GW parts that often are in these pictures?
How are cables done?
Is non-liquid green stuff a good choice?
>>
>>54478434

>>54480084

Black is probably best for the bolter.
You can use blue tac or something to dryfit the bolter when you're assembling the models, it'll let you have full access to the chest to paint.

Color choice wise, I've never been a fan of alternating bits in different colors. I'd say you definitely shouldn't do the boot sections in different colors.
>>
>>54480319
Most people mean edge highlighting when they're talking about highlights.
Get a fairly small brush, and trace your way around sections of armor using a lighter shade of the base color. Look here >>54478434
for a good example.

>>54480084
For cables another option are guitar strings, you can also fashion your own with gs and the right tool.
Yes, gs or another modeling mass is worth it.
If you don't have a good idea on what the finished model is supposed to look like, you may end up with a clusterfuck of things on it, that looked good at the time. So the first step to converting should be planning how you will do it, and if you can do it that way.
>>
What do you think guys? I got a whole bunch of really nice quality movement trays (Warhammer Fantasy player here!). I want to flock 'em up and make 'em look comparable to the rest of my army, so would you recommend priming the entire tray? Also should you put flock down on the entire tray, or just the edges? I don't want to have wobbly models, so I"m assuming just the edges should be painted and flocked?
>>
>>54479183
Very sharp and clean.. maybe a bit *too* clean! Looks great though
>>
>>54480541
yea, doing the inside is pointless and like you said you run the risk of the models not balancing properly
>>
>>54480541
>would you recommend priming the entire tray?
yes

Typically I paint the inside of a movement tray with the same colour as the base edges. If black, leave black. If brown, paint brown. and so on.

>>54480576
Cool, in that case, makes my job a lot easier.

>>54480624
Thanks, yea what I'll do is prime/paint the entire base grey, then just paint the edges green/brown. Then flock the edges and add rocks, etc..

What I am going to flock entirely though is the two trays I got for my dual trebuchets. I want to make them more into 'scenary' pieces. So I'm putting them on their own trays with the crew they come with, plus some rocks and other small scenic bits. Maybe some fallen lances, or helms of knights, pieces of broken building etc...

>How's your weekend been guys?

We have been entertaining my young daughter's friend for the last three days; her mom is a police officer who works odd shifts and her father was out of town, so she's been staying with us. They only wanted to do giggly-girly fingz (they're only 11), so we haven't done much outside of the house - no Friday night fireworks, no Hurricane Harbor, no cinema - but the friend went home last night and my daughter expressed interest in going with me to GW today.

Plus, I opened the "thank you" card from the friend's parents, and there was $100 in it ... so that was a nice bonus!

when weathering aircraft its always good to have exhaust stains streak back. and maybe some powder burns near rocket pods.
then again these are details that are comparable to mud, rust or grime streaks on tanks, so if you only did the chipped paint weathering on your vehicles i wouldn't worry so much about the exhaust stains.

I just say this because of ww2 model airplane autism from way back when.

Whilst laser is better I've had good experiences with inkjet when just making simple shapes and larger decals (skulls, numbers etc.).

One option I've done in the past is print off a high quality copy of the decals onto regular paper with my inkjet, gone to a local copying shop and had them photocopy the decals onto my decal paper with their laser at the highest DPI.

how do you get the sizing just right for the shoulder pads? I might try this with my red scorpions too if I can get it to work reliably
tho I do know forge world sells decal sheets for them
>>
>>54482599
It's to do with the pigment, metallica colours are literally metallic and that's why they are blobby as fuck compared to solid pigments.
The best results I've had have been with the Mr Hobby Gunze Aqueous Metallics. They're kind of like Tamiya paints but aren't shit
>>
>>54482618
Literally measure it is the best way, paint the outline of area on a shoulderpad you want to the decal on and then measure it with a tape measure.
You'll probably only get an area of about 10mmx10mm, the size within that is what you can comfortably fit. Any major image editor should give the real measurements, I know Photoshop does.
It takes a little finessing but once it's done it's done.

If you can get a sheet of the Red Scorpions decals then it does this job for you, just use those dimensions

>>
>>54482970
Vallejo Model Color 175 is pretty good for Bronze, it's a little dark so as long as a highlight is put on it'll be fine
>>
>>54483022
Speaking of which, what is a good highlight for metallic paints? Just use a lighter color metallic?

So if I'm painting silver armor, would I base it with a dark plate mail color, then highlight it with like a 'shining silver' type metallic color?
>>
>>54483143
Pretty much yeah, in my experience you'd go from something like Gun Metal to Chrome plus a fine highlight of silver. That way you should get a good gradient, washes are your friend with metallics too. Chrome with a black/dark brown wash in the deepest creases will replicate shadow well but keep the metallic shine

I - two choppas in drednaught hull, and grot pulling out some cables.
II - one choppa and grot, so you can see grot better
III - grot dragging multimelta arm
last one - rekt drednaught, probably full of holes after shootas canonade, and maybe one big hole after taking hit form kustom mega blasta or something like this.

>>
>>54483887

>>
>>54483887
I bought a 7 dollar back from a local craft store of basic brushes. As long as you care for them well they should maintain enough of a point to do detail work and have a variety of sizes in a single purchase.

When you want to get a nice brush you can get one of the Windsor Newton small sizes as a starter to learn how to care for them
>>
>>54483887
as long as they are synthetic then you should be fine for the time being. I can recommed Winsor and Newton "university" brushes for something a step-up.
>>
>>54483887
My FLGS carries brushes from cheap synthetics for $3-$4 to Kolinsky Sable for sub-$20. My W&N Series 7 cost me $17 and I can't imagine needing a better brush. What the heck are you looking at that costs $50? (All prices in Canadian)

To be very honest when you're starting out just get a size 1 or 2 round that can form a decent tip and you're good.

>>54483830

You want highlights and post a perfect picture for it as well.
See that potato, and watch how the shade turns the bottom part a darker shade of the same color that's on top of the potato. This is highlighting.
Go watch some Duncan over at WarhammerTV, they have great films showing you what you want to learn, including edge highlights that >>54480414 talks about.

Stepping back into the hobby after a long break, I've got a pile of dark eldar models from like 8 years ago that I want to start painting.

Not sure how to take care of brushes. Years ago, the tips would always start fraying really fast, any way I can prevent that?

How do I actually transition a brush from one color to a different one? Like if I'm painting red and want to start painting a different color without mixing. Teenage me would try to wash the brush but late 20's me thinks that guy was a fucking moron.

Anyone have a link to some galleries of dark eldar I can look at? Google keeps showing me the same two or three and all the GW schemes look kinda samey to me.

I see lots of people online making it out to be this complicated process, and they are all using various ball bearings/bolts as agitators in their new dropper bottles.
There's no agitators in the pot, so why would I need that in the dropper bottles? Is it because there's more open space in the pot comparitively?

>>
>>54487070
Even if it's how you wanted, the stripes still fuck your attempts at shading and make the mini look a mess.
additionally, your weathering (I assume that's what it is where I see those big flecks of silver) is inconsistent and poorly executed.

Your basing also looks really lazy.

Your biggest takeaways should be:
1. Learn how to paint inside the lines
2. Learn how to shade and edge highlight cleanly
3. Learn how to freehand/realistically weather
4. Learn how to base.

You're mini's basically failing in those 4 areas.

128737_md-scale comparison.jpg
69KB, 800x600px
>>54489474
1:35 scale is usually best for military vehicles. It's not perfect, but usually close enough to start from (especially with orks). Something like a tank in 1:35 will be as large or larger than 40k vehicles; while small vehicles like jeeps will be warbuggy sized..

Most civilian car/truck models are 1:24, though, which is too big for 40k purposes. I have a '57 Chevy model that I wanted to make into a mekboy junka, but the original model would be significantly longer and wider than a battlewagon. Still usable, but you'll either need to accept that the model might be superheavy-sized, or put work into cutting it down.

Found pic from dakkadakka, the Sherman on the left is 1:35, the Tiger on the right is 1:48.
>>
>>54489474
28mm heroic is officially "1/56" but it is fine to use anything with 1/48. You might get away with a small truck in 1/35
>>
>>54489474
28mm would roughly equate to 1/56, but heroics screw that up.
Weapons for 28mm are bigger than for 1:35 for example. As a rule of thumb I'd say small vehicles and open topped ones where you can see the cockpit or the seats or maybe even want to put crew in should be around 1:35. Larger vehicles and closed ones can be in 1:48.

You'll still get some screwy portions. Hatches, doorhandles and misc other details are gonna be much finer than on their 28mm counterparts.

For orks you don't have to be super careful about that stuff though, since you can just rip stuff out and jam new stuff in easily. So basically any 1:35 tank from a bargain bin with copious amounts of plastic card has potential for greatness.

Only think I'd watch out for are rubber tracks. If you can try to pick a kit with plastic tracks, cause it's gonna be a bit easier to paint.
>>

Massive kit database I use regularly for my scale modelling needs:
https://www.scalemates.com/
>>
>>54489997
Just use a 1:35 kit. It's gonna look fine.
1:56 is kind of a 'soft' scale since it's for gaming, i.e. it's not always perfect, but Bolt Action vehicles are in that style.
0 scale model railway models are also around 1:50.
Keep in mind though we are talking truescale 1:56/50 humans here. They are gonna look a bit small on orks.

Seriously though, if you are not sure about the scales just check out a few conversions using scale kits.

And this is a trukk next to a converted M3 halftrack, also in 1:35. The halftrack is once again a bit longer, but it's narrower and shorter than the trukk.

Of course, WWII halftracks and tanks are larger than most passenger cars. A 70s Firebird in 1:35 scale would be about an inch shorter than this halftrack. Frankly, a 1/48 or 1/56 civilian car would look comical next to ork models.

Looks legit to me. Lots of listings, located in North America. The rating is low for ebay at 98.4% but looking through the negative reviews they seem mostly from slow shipping (which can sometimes happen if the postal system fucks up).

I wouldn't let the low price put you off, the Dark Imperium market is flooded and things are super cheap right now. I bought the entire Death Guard half of the set for $60.
>>
>>54490912
>Can I trust this? I don't buy off of ebay often

Yes.

The Dark Imperium box retails for $160. You can get one on discount for around $130. If you part it out, you can make more money off selling the individual lots to the people who only want that one thing (like Tau or Tyranid players who only want the deluze hardcover roolz, and not any of the miniatures) than (re)selling the entire box.

This seller is obviously parting out a giant stockpile of Dark Imperium (or the other starter kit, which contains fewer models and lacks the hardback roolz) boxes, and cashing in while the demand for Chadmarines is still high.

First time starting/40k and painting. Getting the Fire Warriors and pathfinders ready to put base paints in. Other then the white priming, i put Nuln oil on the clothes of the models to darken the folds before I go over the area with White Scar for a brighter white. Planning to have the armor Caledor Sky

What's with the weapon mixing and matching (Breachers with Pulse Carbines and Pulse Rifles, and Strikers with Pulse Blasters) ??
>>
>>54492503
even after priming i'd suggest putting a coat of the base colour down to ensure that all the area is covered and the colour even before the wash.

Ambitious, starting with white.
white is a hard colour. Lost of thin coats is better than one thick coat.

Also white scar is hard to highlight because its so white.
You're better off finding the closest off white and using that as a base and then using the white scar as a highlight. Ironically it will make your white look whiter since it'll pop out instead of looking flat.

That gold looks too grungy. Even in the grimdark future of the 41st millennium, the custodes take time to make their bling shine

You could also go with a completely different color scheme just to help differentiate them on the table.

Hard to tell if the exquisite shading on the helmet and pauldron are from the lighting or just very well blended shading.

Nice paint, but you really need to do something with the boring base. Once a model is nicely painted, a plain base becomes distracting.

Looks great

What greens did you use? The drab greens appeal to me more than the more vivid olive Raptors usually are

First i just thought the heads were a variant, so i went with what looked cool to vary them

With the weapons i didn't know what was what at the time so i went half and half on the carbines and rifles. When i got a second set i tried to fix it to have 10 breachers and 10 strikers, but some of the strike team had carbines rather then only rifles that seemed to work better. So I just put the other gun on the backpack to be able to "switch them" around as needed since i had a few bits that had no hands holding them.

A better way is to clip all but one branch of the sprue away from each part, then clean off the mold-lines on the sprue. Works better if you can make sure the last branch is a part that will be hidden or needs to be glued. Also, remember that once you prime the parts, plastic cement will only work if you scrape the glue off of both sides of the plastic being glued together as it needs raw plastic to fuse with.

The brown stains on your stormtalon make it look as if some jokaero have been throwing poop at it. Use a darker shade of the base color, silver or black.

My cell phone can't do macro worth a damn, but here's my Kaptin' Murka grot. Been using him as a grot oiler bodyguard for my big mek.

Warboss and big mek in mega armor. Still a long way to go before calling them finished. They need more hazard stripe painted sections, rivets and I'm going to add more cables to the gorilla arms on the boss

And my Gorka and Morkanauts. One was made from a gundam mobile worker and the wazbom sprue from the dakkajet, the other is a funkopop Titanfall figure along with $60 in bits. There's no way in hell I'll ever find the time to paint them all, so I've been sending them off to painting services to have them finished.

Most of my grots are converted to be wearing looted space marine armor. Making 30 of these is a nightmare when even the bits used have to be heavily modified to fit.
