Gonna doublepost because hey, ain't many people around at this hour anyway.
First off we have an extremely simple conversion of an Island of Blood Rat Ogre - just added an exhaust pipe, clipped the tail and replaced the stabby bit with a flamethrower from some old Ork kit, flame came from the Silver Tower box set off a Blue Horror. The face was replaced with a Bullgryn Bone'ead, picked up a box today. The idea is that the lower face from the moustache will be replaced with a bunch of cables or tentacles. Gonna need to trim all the fur and whatnot, but otherwise this is an easy one.
>>
>>54461773
Left could do with some better highlighting on the armour I think

Following up from that, we have the Chaos Ogryn that I picked up today. Since I managed to get my hands on the Bullgryn kit I found that the Ripper guns were exactly what I was looking for, I gave the drill the chop and added a beefier looking one from the Ork Killa Kans. Not too sure about the shoulder pad though, but it looked like he needed some extra armour.

reposting because now I need some advice. I want to shorten the blade because it's too long so I'm thinking about taking about a half inch off and filing down the hilt a little bit, but how should I reattach the sword blade? just superglue is going to snap right off the second someone looks at it funny
>>
>>54461926
Is this a DA dude? If the sword is too long, just replace the whole sword.
>>
>>54461950
The sword blade is perfect for how I imagined it, and the pommel and handle are also perfect, it's just a bit long for my taste.

>new here, can someone explain this red bloke meme to me

In 1988, when Citadel Miniatures advertised the second round of metal Space Marines for Warhammer 40,000, they named them after the cast of the 1960's Batman TV serial. There was a Brother (Adam) West, Brother (Burt) Ward, Brother (Burgess) Meredith, etc. One marine, Brother (Yvonne) Craig, is reloading his bolt gun. He's holding the fresh magazine up next to his helmet, as if he were talking to it. There's a Russ Nicholson illustration in White Dwarf 105 based on this model, although Nicholson portrayed him as bearing a scanner instead.

Around 1990, when Citadel published their four-part catalogue, they dropped the silly names, and the marines got part numbers and more descriptive, practical names ("Bolter #2", "Plasma Gun #1", etc.). Brother Craig was nowhere to be found, however. You were lucky, then, if you picked one up in a blister, as he doesn't have a (published) part number like everybody else. The model is now fairly difficult to find.

A couple of years ago, when I posted a picture of Brother Craig here on /WIP/, some clever anon grabbed it, and, borrowing from the Cartoon Network show Ed, Edd, 'n' Eddy, portrayed him as having a conversation with his magazine the same way Johnny does with Plank, his best-friend-who-is-only-a-face-drawn-on-a-board. Since then, several other painters who came across this model painted him up. Occasionally, when I have the opportunity to start a /WIP/ thread, I'll post a collage of them at the top; there are currently nine Johnnies in it, including two Blood Angels, an Ultramarine, a Mantis Warrior, a Dark Angel, and even an Auric Patrician!
>>
The white citadel primer was fucked up and I end up with a model looking like covered with snow. How do I remove paint cheaply and/or quickly without damaging the model? Never have to do it before
>>
Hey lads, new to the hobby and am probably going to buy and paint the Tau Start Collecting! box.
I am looking for brushes on the principle of "buy once cry once", so I'm thinking of just getting sable brushes.
So far I'm thinking a #1,2, and 3 should be fine, but some kits include more (i.e. Da Vinci 5359 has #0,1,2,3,4, and 6 for less than Winsor & Newton does for just a #0,1,2, and 3).
Would a combination of brushes like that solve most of my paintting needs aside from dry brushing?
Any (you)'s greatly appreciated

If I wanted to get my hands on one, where would I go about it? eBay? Recasters?

>How do I remove paint cheaply and/or quickly without damaging the model? Never have to do it before

Can I guess your model is plastic? If you're in the US, most people will recommend soaking in concentrated Simple Green or non-actone nail polish remover, followed by vigourous scrubbing with an old toothbrush.

If you're in the UK, I hear brown Dettol works well, but there's one anon here who achieved remarkable results on some old First Edition plastic scouts with Wilko's paint and varnish remover.

>If I wanted to get my hands on one, where would I go about it? eBay?

Sometimes you'll see one on eBay. Any time I spot one, regardless of how ridiculous the price (some sellers realize what they have), I'll post it here. Haven't seen one in several weeks, though.

If you're a member of any 40K trading forums or Facebook groups - especially those that traffic in "Oldhammer" models from the late 80's and early 90's - I almost think that'd be a better shot.

>Recasters?

I can't believe there'd really be a market for that, and you probably don't want any of the ones I've made unless you're really psyched about filling in bubbles with green stuff.

I'll probably be dialing back the red as I add more boyz, it just felt like a good choice to have on the rokkit packs and I also wanted to try having red on their sluggas. I'll probably stop doing red on the sluggas so much. Most of the army doesn't have red at all, the only other unit that has a lot of red instead of a spot here and there are my Tankbustaz, for similar reasons as the Stormboyz.

I tried with a single one. But using black modeling mass, it's always going to be hard to see.
As I said, I ended up being lazy and didn't put in as much effort as I would have needed to make it look really good. They will be standing next to 20 diaz daemonettes anyway.
I still have some left to do this process on, but if I'd make another troop I'd probably go for dfc instead.

Yes, it is supposed to be just that.
Simply spread modeling mass out on the base and poke into it with a fitting tool. It is kind of high and I pushed the models into it a little bit. What is left is to cover the rest of the base with texture paint and maybe some small rocks.

For the miniatures I use a 1/1 mix of greenstuff and aves apoxie sculpt, which is less sticky and a bit nicer to work with. For me at least, I recommend not getting the black version.
On the bases I used aves alone, but I can't recommend it for anything complex as it is kinda crumbly.
As for the greenstuff, look for a version that has the blue and yellow parts seperated, otherwise you have to cut away the line where they are connected.
>>54464588
For doing that yourself, I first cut the detail away from the model, to get an even area, in which I can drill more easily. The drilling is so the little metal ball I use as basis for the breast stays in position. You could skip this step, but I find it harder to model a "believable" breast without it. Cover the ball with a little bit of modeling mass and work the form into the rest of the model. Keeping it round takes effort, I didn't always put in. I let it dry before trying to fix on the corset and bra area, to not mess up the form, but considering the weird shapes of the bras, it might have been easier to work them in directly.

when people say they're "magnetising" something what does that mean? I assumed it's a painting technique?
>>
>>54465463
Putting magnets in it so that you can assemble it with more than 1 loadout or even pose.
>>
>>54465481
so instead of the parts being held by glue it's held by magnets?
>>
>>54465493
exactly. For example on the arms of a space marine captain so you can swap his arm with energy sword with an arm equipped with power fist so you don't have to own two miniatures to have both options.

The magnets required for that are called "neodym magnet" and you can find them on ebay and of course in well sorted hobby stores. They are dirt cheap too.
>>
>>54465533
oh that's awesome, thanks for the explanation
>>
>>54465493
Yeah, so for Tau, let's take the crisis suits, they have a MASSIVE amount of ways you can kit them out, so people often opt to put magnets on the weapon bits and the areas on the model's arms/jetpack where they would join. Then you can just switch them out whenever to whatever you like.
>>
>>54465069
I found that using vaseline lets you avoid the problem with the putty sticking to everything, very helpful if you use any amount of milliput.
On the flip side, now you have a problem with greasiness on the model, tools fingers etc.

Any link to where you purchased those metal balls?

Precisely. It pays to occasionally have a couple, and it can be really fiddly with some parts and models, but for larger stuff like tanks and large Mecha there's no reason not to do it. Pic related is my first Imperial Knight. Head still disassembled because there was a casting problem and the mounting point didn't form properly so I'm trying to figure out what to do about that, armour panels off to paint separate and all the weapons are magnetised. There's 5 variations, so I got about £375's worth of options for £75.

Prime in grey (for darker schemes) and white using this primer. From there you can use army painter sprays, GW sprays or test some flat finish cheaper brands like rustoleum but avoid krylon. Tape off sections of the model with paper and spray cloaks red from white etc and wash. The same technique is used with an airbrush but given you can control how much paint flows you use slightly watered down black wash to create shadows in a white primed model's crevices. Afterward you lightly mist the color which doesn't conceal the work you did.

>>
>>54468205
The crux terminatus isn't why terminators have invulnerable saves. And any marine trained in the use of tactical dreadnought gear will put the crux on his regular powered armour as well, to let everyone know that he's a bad dude.
>>
>>54468205
Because the Crux is also the sign of Terminator Honours aka Veteran Status.

How the fuck do you remove mold lines from fine detail parts on like genestealers -like the inset 'ruffled' parts and the mold line cuts across the raised parts perpendicual?
>>
>>54468440
That's entirely symbolic, and has no functional purpose. Also in the olden days the only crux badges with the fragments of the emperor's armour in them were the ones worn by terminator captains.

Anyways, terminator armour has a 5++ because it's just that thicc.
>>
>>54468440
> the Crux contained a fragment of Big E's armour

That's a myth. The actual reason for the inv. save is the terminator's in-built force field generator.
>>
>>54468205
>Why does the officer have a Crux Terminatus on his shoulder?

The crux represents the terminator honours, i.e. the rights to wear terminator armour.
>>
>>54468440
According to what I've read Space Marines receive the Crux Terminatus as a badge of honor signifying veteran status before they can begin the training required to wear Terminator armor. Also not all of them incorporate pieces of the Emperor's armor, only some special relic ones have it.

I don't think they do, which isn't as rare as you think (esp. among BA successors).
For example, Flesh Tearers don't differentiate since they have so few marines that every one has to be able to fill in on any squad type on a moment's notice. It's not too far fetched to think the the Lamenters (who have even fewer marines than the Flesh Tearers as of current fluff) would be forced to the same.

These suits aren't meant for the 3-point landing that I knew I wanted to do. The base wasn't big enough for me to sculpt a crater he could fit wholly inside, so now it looks like he's clambering out of it as a follow up to his deepstrike.

You could look into sourcing a wheel from a carriage or a heavy weapon of some sort. Just have to add the handles.

It's because Battletech isn't horrifyingly grimdark. Do you think that head would look alright on a tech-marine body? The open faced one in the top right, or would it look too bulky on a normal marine body?

>The tower itself though looks pretty outdated and needs a serious design overhaul.
It's just a regular old tower made of steel beams. If you find a railway model or toy that should do the trick.
And the rest looks like a bunch of loudspeakers. If you don't put medieval looking roofing on the platform where I presume the weirdboy stands it should look up to date already.

Looks a bit like sonic weaponry, really.
>>
>>54471686
The fluff says that the tower uses various machines and speakers to amplify the weirdboy's power so something like the the mad max truck here >>54471653 might work. Could replace the weirdboy with a goff rocker too, have him performing a concert from atop the tower.

Your photography is way above par, really great.

Your painting needs some massive work though, why not watch duncan's videos? Its not hard with someone like dunc teaching you how to do a decent tabletop job,

As for your scheme the colours clash wildly for a weird aesthetic, Hazard stripes need work use artists tape for this and watch tutorials on it or read the technique in the last white dwarf.

No point taking such great photos without learning to paint properly.

The secret is to clean your damn moldlines

Christ Almighty, I started 40k about a week ago and my painting is complete dogshit.

I've watched 500 tutorials but nothing seems to stick. I'm not wanting "great" models at this juncture, but just passable ones. Additionally, I seem to be getting worse with each model.

The Marine and the Banner are real good. Backpack looks like it could use more more defined highlights. Also the base is really boring.
But that's definitely tabletop quality. I'd say even above.
>>
>>54473707
>>54473692
Looks pretty good except for the base, you need to go thicker with the Agrellan Earth to get it to look right.
>>
>>54473761
>>54473784

thanks boys, i've been more brave with my highlights and they look better

Do you need to put primer on the base for texture paints? That may be why, otherwise I'll just add more splooges
>>
What are the essential washes?
I know nuln is good on metallics
>>
>>54473823
Nuln oil and Agrax Earthshade are the two essential ones that you should always have.

This is literally the first miniature I gave ever painted, please help me, /tg/. How do I into edge highlighting, try as I might I can't make it look like duncan's. all tips and criticism will be greatly appreciated.
>>
>>54473807
I don't know if you need primer for the base but it wouldn't hurt. But, yeah, you really need to splooge on the agrellan earth, get it on real thick because it won't cover nicely otherwise.
>>
>>54473868
anon you wanna prime your minis before painting them.
>>
>>54473866

What is agrax good for, what is it best on? I know nuln is good for the aforementioned as well as detail popping.
>>
>>54473913
Is it really that bad to not do? Thats like the one thing I forgot to buy at the store. The GW I go to is kind of far away, can I find primer at like a craft store?
Fuck me anon this shit is so much harder than it looks
>>
>>54473915
Agrax is good for warm colors, stuff like cloth, skin, red, and gold, nuln oil is good for cool colors like gunmetal, greys, and blues.
>>
>>54473938
Rustoleum primer is a good, cheap primer that is easy to find in most hardware stores and stores like Walmart. Priming is very important because paint sticks to it very easily, moreso than the bare plastic so it will retain the paint better.
>>
>>54473938

if you don't prime your minis the paint has a harder time to stick, also it undercoats it so either black brings the color down or white brings it up

i would seriously not recommend you paint your guys without primer
>>
>>54473943

Neat, thanks

Yeah, I started a few days ago, gave up on my first mini after the white wouldn't show properly.

Pic related.

White is a serious pain in the ass to get to look right. The best way to do it is get a base coat of grey and then do a lot of very thin coats of white until it looks smooth. Keep trying anon, it's alright if you don't get it right the first time, just keep practicing and things will come easier.
>>
>>54473978
>>54473974
welp, rip captain test marine in my first pic then. His comrades shall emerge prettier due to his sacrifice. Thanks for your help.
>>
>>54474029

you never put straight white anon, it clumps as as all hell, use it only for edge highlighting your greys
>>
>>54474069

whenever I try a new technique, I always except my first mini to look a tad sub-par to the other ones, so don't beat yourself over it

if anything, keep it as a memento

Don't worry about it. It's alright if it doesn't come out right the first time you do it, you just got to keep practicing and keep improving.

>pic related is Duncan Rhodes's first mini.
>>
>>54474106

I've looked several times at Saint Duncan's first. It occurred to me just now, looking at the base and the plastron that this was probably one of the old plastic multipart "Space Marines: Warriors of the Imperium". Damn, that was a neat set!
>>
>>54474069

>welp, rip captain test marine in my first pic then

The upside to having done paint directly on the plastic is that it is far easier to remove than paint done over primer.

Stop by wal-mart sometime and find a bottle of Simple Green, if you can. An hour or so soaking in some of that + a toothbrush will strip your captain pretty easily without damaging the plastic. Rinse him with water thoroughly to clear off the Simple Green and of course let him dry out completely before applying primer.

Is there an archive of Imperial guard armies, all painted up.

I've just started an IG army and looking for paint scheme ideas. Im thinking something urban / dark with red and want to see what has worked for others.

Anyway, just finished my first Bushido paint job order. Was great fun to paint.
