Having a faster unit (doesn't even have to be good in melee) charge the offending unit from the rear whilst your other unit that is the real threat charges from the front helps. Cut off the escape routes so they have nowhere to run.

One of the things I like in 8th is that there is more decision making involved with assaults, rather than just successfully charge and making sure your unit has a higher initiative.

I think their fluff reason was that if half your army is from the guard for example, it disrupts space marines whereas a single space marine force act as one or something like that.

That's Stratagems, not Chapter Tactics.

Chapter Tactics require all models in the Detachment to have the same Chapter.

Special Stratagems require all models in the whole ARMY to have a certain keyword.

There are both Adeptus Astartes Stratagems and more specific Chapter Stratagems.

For example the White Scars Stratagem lets you Advance, shoot, and charge with a unit all in the same turn. If your whole army is White Scars you can spend command points to use that. However if you add a Detachment of non-White Scars, you can't, but your White Scars will keep their Chapter Tactics abilities as long as they're in a separate Detachment from the other guys.

A buddy of mine used to give his boyz a lot of Imperial bits, guns and paldrons, etc. They're a fun klan. There are a few 3rd party companies that make things like Orks in longcoats of Ork commissars. So there are options, if you want to spend the time and money.

shootas can be okayish if you expect to have to slog a bit to get to the enemy or camp on an objective, so they can try to contribute while walking around. But choppas are definitely better if you have a warboss, battlewagon, weirdboy or some combo thereof to get them into the fight fast.

Choppa boyz are fiercer in combat than they have been for a while, but you still need to build your list keeping in mind they need ways to reliably make it to combat for them to really get to use them.
Transports, weird boys with Da Jump, Painboyz and/or Kustom Force Fields to survive the slog.
If you're just plonking them down to act on their own, shootas are probably better. Even without that extra attack, they can still inflict a lot of hurt if they find themselves in melee.

So I just did some mathhammer of 7e Crusader Knight vs 8e Crusader Knight.
For the purposes of the scenario, each knight uses their edition's rules to hit, then mid air the projectiles transform into the other edition's projectiles, and use other edition rules from there.
For example, 7e Knight shoots his 2 rfbc at 8e, they then wound on a 4+, and the 8e knight saves on a 5+.
In return, 8e knight fires his average of 7 shots at 7e, who loses a hull point on 5+, and deflects with Ion Shield on 4+.
I replaced 1 stubber with multimelta, but didn't add a carapace weapon.

What I found is they both kill each other in exactly 4 rounds.
The problem is that the 8e Knight is just over 100 points more expensive.

Did Knights really need such a huge nerf from 7th edition?

Stormravens aren't even particularly that good as a pure gun platform. Its a solid unit that is good against non-optimized anti vehicle options that exploits the dumb turn order rules.

Hows this for a 500 point Shooty Marine force?
I'm pretty keen to keep the Techmarines in for fluff and style reasons, but I'm open to suggestions for the rest; mostly just looking at lots of close range dakka.

I'm Your Dudesing it up with these guys, so haven't settled on a Chapter Tactic yet; Ultramarines is the main contender, but Salamanders, RG and IF all have their perks too.

>Company Vets x 5 w/Combi Bolters

>Razorback w/Twin Assault Cannon and Storm Bolter

>Thunder Fire Cannon w/Techmarine Gunner

>Servitors x 5 w/Plasma Cannon x 2

The idea is the Razorback delivers the Vets and Techmarine into range for a close range fire fight and just roll as many dice as possible, while the Thunderfire and Plasma Cannon servitors plink away from the backline. The Dreadnought will probably be called upon to hold the line and/melee as necessary.

From there I'd probably expand into more shooty stuff for the next 500 points, definitely a Devastator Squad for some anti tank stuff, then maybe more vehicles, dreads and techmarines.

No it isn't. It might be if you happened to live in that universe, but we don't, so they aren't horrifying at all. Moreover daemons and chaos gods don't even behave in strange or alien ways, the behave like psychotic, dimwitted humans with magic powers and are treated exactly like that by the writers.
