Trying to make the poses of my Dreadnoughts a little less static. How'd I do? Poses aren't 100% exact (the blu tack isn't holding them up/together too well) but the basic ideas get along I think.
Top one is going to be a standard run of the mill Dreadnought and the bottom one is going to be Death Company.

Fucking GW. Why can't you just make all the dreadnought bits compatible with one another? I know why they'd hate bit swapping, but this is just stupid. Most of the bitz have *slight* differences that make them not fit on any other kit purely to prevent swapping so it seems. What little is swappable without conversion work barely fits on anyway.

The bottom one is still static.

The top one is good, the turn in the hip is dynamic, not sure how I feel about the lean to the right due to height change, and definitely think the left leg is too far out, if it's possible you might want to move the left leg inwards a bit.

>>
>>54418022
Is there a better shade for yellow other than Casandora Yellow? Want something for better contrast so I was thinking of either Seraphim or Agrax.
>>
Anyone here a very good sculptor? I am interested in getting something commissioned.

In other news, I've been working on my omegon/alpharius model built off of guilliman. I have been carving out his armor and it has been a chore. I'll fix any imperfections later with magicsculpt.

I'm good enough and confident enough at sculpting to give him a sweet spawn cape, but I'm not confident putting scales on said cape. I'm also toying around with giving him the signature spear, but I'm doubting my ability to come up with one/find one impressive enough for the model.

Most forward piece was what I was in the middle of cleaning when I took the pic.

My Raven Guard Lieutenant with some of his mans.

The pamphlet that came with DI just showed that their helmets were black so I did the white veteran arms plus a company marking to distinguish him.

I'll do squad markings eventually.
>>
>>54420658

I would have made his mouthplate or entire helmet white as well, looks better and should be more accurate, but it's your choice.
>>
>>54420658
I feel their lenses aren't exciting enough.
Also, mold lines.
>>
>>54420672

There's a little section in the Primaris mini book that gives painting tips and shows how most first founding chapters mark their Lieutenant helmets and the Ravens just leave it black with the skull. No stripe or anything, so I tried to make them stand more than just have solid black armor.

>>54420713

Yeah I realized I was kinda lazy with some mold lines after priming, especially the heads.

What could I add to the lenses? I've been experimenting with doing more than just leaving them solid red for a little bit

First models painted after a long haitus. Last box I bought was the battle for black reach.

Any critiques welcome, finding the citadel paints very clumpy and sticky, really hard to get nice clean lines for the highlights. Even after thinning and flow enhancer.
>>
>>54420803
For simple red lenses:
>red base
>nuln wash
>red again, leaving nuln in the recesses
>orange in the middle
>brighter orange towards the front/center
And a short step further if you wanna make them glow:
>subtle red glaze under the lenses - maybe 2 layers
Used that for my Fallen. Quite literally the least amount of work for a decent result.

I have heard that I can't paint let's say Ultramarines in any other color than blue and play them on a tournament as ultramarines, is that true? Why is that the case?
>>
>>54421370
You can paint them as ultramarine successors

Rules are different from tourney to tourney but usually this is so that people dont play their imperial fists as raven guard or shit like that for
Waac reasons

Not all tourneys are that strict tho
>>
>>54421370
WYSIWYG.

It's in the BRB.

If you make up your own DIY chapter that's usually fine though, but for a tourney that depends on who hosts the event.

If you don't like the UM scheme you could also paint one of their successors, that should be fine even for WYSIWYG nazis.
There should be a passage written about successor chapters in the codex somewhere iirc.

After after I've written all of this I just realized 40k is in 8th edition now.
It should still be somewhat accurate information though.
>>
>>54414067
Question, aside from the (gigantic) weapon, what other conversions are you doing to Rowboat Girlyman? Can't quite see myself.
Also, how's he looking size-wise, compared to another Daemon prince?
>>
>>54416118
Basically, any pose that a real, multi-ton bipedal war machine could not hold standing still.
Eg, front leg bent high up to the body, knee bent, with the bac leg straight and moving behind the main body.
It would be hard to make a dreadnought seem like it's moving, as by design (and lore) they are very static, but the Ven is looking good for motion.
All, I'd say is, one leg before the other and keep the body in front of the C.O.G but keep the weapons level-ish.
>>
>>54420826

What are the key points that make you see a model and say "that's for display, not for gaming".

I mean, a highly technical and accurate paintjob is obvious, and yet sometimes you see very high end paintjobs that still look like they are for gaming for some reason, like pic related.

What makes a model ascend past the gaming look and into the display and contest levels?
>>
>>54423215
Beyond using a normal sized base and such? It's just how your mind categorises things. Subjective, intuitive, emotional, and in many ways effectively random.
>>
>>54423215
A bigass base.
>>
>>54423215
I think the base should be given as much attention as you gave the model in display quality models. If you've got a beautifully painted model, why put it on a flat, bland, drybrushed base.

>>54423327
Seems like we have a consensus on the importance of a proper base. But I think the model's size also matters, look at this Avatar by Bohun, it has a simple base, yet I would never mistake it for a gaming model. In this case it helps that the thing is huge and more comparable to a bigger scale figure than a 28mm miniature.

Marines do look cool in camo, many chapters actually have standard camo patterns utilized in various campaigns they participated in.

Nope. Hit the bottom of the bottle and gave it a good stir. So yeah vallejo and AP are shit paints. Its not just the Banshee brown I've had the same issue with three WW2 paint sets along with individual bottles from a hobby store.

The problem is AP hand out their paints by the truckload to youtubers who make the tutorials and the comparison chart on dakka dakka is incomplete as well as inaccurate. In my experience watered down citadel does the job but its getting accurate comparisons leaves me having to buy AP

He's going to be my new Champion or chaos-lord in power-armor.
His right arm (left on the picture) will be replaced with a Power-fist, though I'm not sure what to put his left hand. A sword, or a pistol ,maybe?
>>
>>54430256
>Okay well how do you use Vallejo and army painter different from citadel?
Vallejo comes out of the bottle thinner and dries faster. But the paint is great for glazes and building up gradients that way.
In my experience I found GW paints to be mostly chalky if you thinned them a lot. They can be a bit transparent depending on what paint you are using.
Scale 75 dries even faster, settles supersmooth and matte and are very opaque.

There are noticeable differences in the paints.

If you got a problem with mixing the vallejo paints you should try turning them upside down and rolling them between your hands. When you shake them I found it also works better if you add a twist from your wrist to the motion, whereas the GW paints were fine with a simple saltshaker motion.

But, since I am still in need of a sorcerer, I thought I'd replace the arms and backpack from him with this fella. I had to grab a elbow-pad from one of my regular CSM to make sure his none-staff-holding hand was pointed upwards. I am in the process off cutting and dry-fitting the "spellcloud" that the Malignant Plaguecaster throws from his hand, as to make it look like its rising from the palm of his hand instead. I'll probably have to do some minor pinning, and greenstuff it to make it flow better.
Staff hand is not fastened yet, I'm simply holding it in place with my finger in this image.

I think the trees look good, The height is right and it looks like you made it so you can remove them from the bases. You could have spaced them out a little bit to make more pieces of terrain from the same amount of trees, and for the models to be able to fit better in between.
The bases are a bit too thick for my taste though, did you use foam?

not very.
All you need is magnets, a drill bit the right size or an engraving bit for your rotary tool (if you have one it's gonna make your life easier) and some glue and putty.
Stuff you should have anyway basically.

Also don't forget to prep a master magnet on a stick or something to check polarity before you glue.

That's all you need.

WIP I NEED YOUR OPINIONS

i am trying to make a faithful reconstruction of another inquisitor who fought during the siege of vraks, Tojarni Piott.

pic related is what I have to work with on him, however in the 8th edition index inquisitors cant have a powerfist and a bolter. So i am unsure whether I model him with a rules-illegal bolter or if i give him an inferno/infernus pistol from a blood angels kit instead (along with his power fist)

Im also on the edge of whether or not to use my last metal deathwatch head (the OLD sculpt) or to give him a face like most inquisitors have
im leaning towards using the deathwatch head so that it has a happy home

>i am trying to make a faithful reconstruction

Question is are gonna use the model to game or are you into the fluff?

That would be the deciding factor for me. If you don't intend to game, why do you care about the 8th edition codex?
It's gonna be different in the next one anyway.

If you want to use him for gaming you can still call him Tojarni, but maybe a younger/older version of him.

The third option would be to use something that could count as both, the old equipment and the currently legal one.

In any case I'd love to see an Inquisitor in powerarmor that isn't just a plastic spacemarine with a few extra bits. So alternate sources for powerarmor would be nice.
I'd look into Urban War maybe.

Does this feel like a satisfactory inquisitor or are there any details I should add?
>>
>>54432176
Works, but feels a bit utilitarian.
I'd expect an inquisitor to have a bit more bling.
Maybe a loincloth, tabard or cingulum would make him feel a bit more like a hero character.
Or at least a bit less like a space marine.

If he's gonna be gold like the guy next to him and the inqiusitors are the only golden boys in the army he'll stand out though. So depends a bit on the rest of your army.

From an WYSIWYG pov you got everything though. His weapons, power armor and the inquisition seal.

Greenstuff is okay, but a bit stiff for press molds. I use a 50/50 mix of Magic Sculp (not a typo) and green stuff. It makes it much softer.

Or you can use just green stuff but use more "yellow" than blue, that will leave it very soft and pliable as well, but take longer to cure.

Picture is with wet ink but I haven't got a picture since the ink dried.

I want to make these guys look like a ship wreck, the colours I have are right, they look like they're covered in silt with rust underneath where visible. I'm going to paint the skulls with green shading so they look like they're water corroded. I'm going to paint the bolter casing like it's made of rotten wood by free handing in the detail and replace the power axe heads with anchors.

I'm a little considered about the bolter metal being the same silty green as the armour. I was considering trying to do a rusty metal but all the metal is already the rusty silted kind.

Any suggestions for the bolters?

I also made up some sea weed using cotton wool, PVA glue and green ink, which will be coming out from under the torso and clinging to parts of them. Want to give the idea that they've been underwater a long time not just taken a dip.

Tanks being the same color as infantry shouldn't be a problem, if anything the consistency should make them fit together better. Also for highlighting, it depends on what you want to go for, if you want more cool colors get a more blueish green, for warmer get a more yellowish green.

I think the pathfinders are much better than the fire warriors. The blue looks really good on them and the blue and green gives off a really alien vibe too. The fire warriors aren't bad either, just not executed as well. Maybe try some tan highlighting next time? Or maybe a darker khaki?

The devil fish and suit look really weird to me though. Why are they all one color? You should probably add something to break up the monotony. But if there's something there I can't see because if the photo then don't ruin a bad thing just because the Internet said so.

yeah they were the first models in this army. here are some later firewarriors. but even then they were done years ago. so my skill was less and yeah the pathfinders do look better. their suits turned out much better than i anticipated.

I need to add something to the vehicles. corrosion i think will help. but you're right the colours are olive green, dark olive green, and black. i wanted the dark tiger stripe on my suits and vehicles. but i need that accent on the vehicles and the line highlight i did to the suits doesn't look too good on camera and washes out the camo... as for things to make the suit pop. I'm hoping weapons will do that. but i lack any painted up suit weapons. also the cream colour on the antennas becomes more prevalent the higher ranked the pilot of the suit.

It also doesn't help that i fell for the devlin mud meme instead of using the right coloured washes for the right colours.

I wouldn't dry brush, after wash you mostly just want to re-apply the base coat to the flat and raised areas keeping away from the recesses where the shade's pooled up. Black wash should work fine if you have nothing else or you don't want to blow money on multiple washes, but if you can afford to shell out for it I'd get a dark green wash.
