Paizo Games General /pgg/ (also /pfg/)

When was the last time you saw someone play a real deal elf? Not an aasimar, tiefling, kitsune, catfolk, special snowflake DSP race, or whatever, but a genuine elf.

Hey /pfg/ I'm a new DM and I was wondering if you could help me out with a homebrew idea.

I was going to have my party enter the plane of earth and fight some shaitans and have the boss chuck large magnetic boulders that would stick to and hold in place the players wearing heavy metal armor and some larger magnetic areas might rip metal weapons out of the player's hands if they don't pass a check. On the players turn they'd be able to roll a check to shove the boulders away or move with reduced speed.

How would I go about writing the mechanics for these stones?
>>
>>54401144

Howdy /pfg/, I'm building a character that takes Fighter as a chassis, and guts all of its features in place of the Myrmidon (PoW), War Hero and Spirit-Wielder archetypes (SoP). Spirit-Wielder allows Fighter to turn any one weapon into an intelligent "awakened weapon" with highly limited sphere casting.

The awakened weapon gets only a few spell points and has low caster level progression. It gains the Enhancement sphere by default, and gains only three other talents, but it can take drawbacks and boons, may target the wielder with personal-range effects, and uses its own actions.

With that said, how would you make the most out of an awakened weapon for an initiator, especially considering the added action economy? Constant personal Improved Haste, various Enhancement buffs, at-will Teleport, Crystal Blast/CC abilities, Fount of Life and Resuscitate, Encompassing Light stacking with Primal Warrior Stance; there's a lot of possibilities, but limited choices.

Hi people, I want to make Bravery less of a joke. Would you be okay with it giving +1 per 2 levels on saves vs fear and combat stamina pools, and players being able to use an immediate action to apply the bonus on any other save? I want it to represent a fighter "soldiering on" or just having a last-second burst of adrenaline. For feats, class features etc that upgrade it, it would count at its current rate.

My idea is to give it at half rate to archetypes that lose it now, so they are not entirely out in the cold.
>>
>>54402398
Literally see Armoured Bravery.
Bravery is effectively "you have a good will save nao" with it and literally every fighter takes it.

Unsell me on Gaseous Form for a Qinggong monk. I get wizard levels of bullshittery during exploration. The only downside I can see is that yeah the wizard could cast this instead, and later on it gets overshadowed by abundant step.

>>54402714
Treading calm water is dc10

if not stressed, a person with no bonuses or penalties can take 10 and be fine.
>>
>>54402721
Gaseous Form is dreadful. It reduces your speed to nothing. It reduces your AC to nothing. It gives you DR, but it doesn't apply against magic weapons- so, virtually everything.
>>
>>54402421

Yes, and that's my problem. Bravery is one of the fighter's very few features and it is complete shit on its own. I want to make it not shit without just giving them a good will save.

I used the 1 per 2 levels progression, as it is fairly common - trapfinding, stern gaze, bardic knowledge, etc. Since combat stamina is another typical fighter thing, I wanted "bravery" (I call it "indomitable") to apply to saves vs fear and it as well.

The ability to use it for other stuff with an immediate action was a bit of a freebie, but I expect that fighters should be extremely used to combat. I was thinking about gating it by not making it available while the fighter is flat-footed, since it is a conscious effort.
>>
>>54402852
I mentioned exploration. I'm not using it in combat, I'm using it to move the story forward and walk through walls.
>>
>>54402958
I'm aware. I'm just saying that if you get caught out in that form, it could seriously suck. Remember, 10ft movespeed.
>>
>>54402858
Here's the thing about making bravery a +1/2 levels bonus: in addition to adding to saves vs fear, and all Will saves with Armored Bravery (and 2x against fear), you can also add it to your initiative, the DC to checks to feint/demoralize you, on saves vs all mind-affecting effects, bluff and intimidate, escape artist checks and CMB checks to escape a grapple, and you can also grant the mind-affecting/feint/demoralize/escape artist bonuses to allies within 30 feet. Also, that would mean that at level 8 (or possibly level 4) the character could fairly reliably get fear immunity.

You can, if you invest in it. Without investment, Bravery is a joke.

I want to keep the investment options, but I want it to be useful on its own. Fighters get a total of 3 class abilities prior to level 19, they should not require extra feats put in them to be good.

>>54404209
It doesn't have to be anything particularly advanced, just an establishing blurb that embodies the character's core values and the backstory tone. An example from way back that stuck with me was for a huntsman in a dark fantasy campaign who became a monster hunter after tragedy killed his family. The blurb went something like this,

>People do not simply come into the business of monster slaying. For some it's the pursuit of gold, others fame. Some seek vendetta against the beasts that tore a normal life from them, While others see it as the only chance for a normal life they've got. For Sigmund Caine, it's a bit of them all.

That's all the blurb is, something that goes from the starting line to, "okay, this guy is an XXX and and here's a couple hints as to why."
>>

Pathfinder is a pretty broken system, but what is has to offer are options. There's options for almost any build you want (whether or not they're mechanically optimal or good), and there's support for a load of shit that 5e simply doesn't offer. If you're looking for a balanced system, Pathfinder is probably not it, look for GURPS or something instead.
Starfinder is supposed to be coming in less than a month, so you could also stick around for that.

>How much work would it be to match the "minmax" of the thread?
It would depend on what applications you choose, honestly. I think it's a safe bet to assume that /pfg/ characters at a minimum are more than a match for normal encounter CR+1 / +2.
>>
>>54406869
>I don't super care if they destroy the first books combat

It's not just the first book. Despite /pfg/'s insistence that it's balanced, PoW majorly fucks over anyone who doesn't know how to play with it. Same thing with all the other books people are going to ask you for.
>>
>>54406883
But they're not? So you're wrong. Cynn is not designed to be cute first and foremost, she's designed to be a mad scientist with a cool robot dog first and foremost, and to have a motivation that fits in with iron gods, to discover how robots are made so she can make her own.
Her cuteness is an afterthought to me.

And you still have yet to describe what a 'serious' character is. If you have, describe it again, please. I'm fucking waiting.
>>
>>54406720
Like with Vicious Stomp, I mean.
>>
>>54406950
Nah, PoW is by far the worst offender in what it does to game balance.
Spheres and Psionics are still strong, but they only ever become alternatives to Vancian. PoW however makes it so EVERY martial also HAS to be an initiator - non-initiators fall hopelessly behind, forcing both players and GM to make every fightman an an initiator once you have a single one in the game.
>>
>>54406950
So how do you GM for PoW and SoP? And just saying don't allow them seems like a quick way to be a unpopular game filled with Roll20 randos.
>>
>>54406995

This seriously. I'm playing a non-initiator, non-smiter in a game. I feel like I'm completely outstripped by other characters.
>>
>>54406995
>>54407030
its possible to make a 1pp only martial that keeps up with initiators, but its hugely optimized builds to do it and its honestly not much fun.
>>
Okay.

How about we just port over the Tome of Battle, should be dead simple, right?
>>
>>54406642
>>54406869
>How much work would it be to match the "minmax" of the thread?

By talking to the players you want to pick and not picking the people who are clearly trying to break your chargen over their knees. The guy who wants to be a pre-errata Steelfist Warlord||Body Pact Avowed with Broken Blade+Shattered Mirror, for example, should just get a PM with a 10 minute laugh track and a rejection notice. The guy who wants to play an Unchained (MoMS/Scaled Fist) Monk||Bard who's focused on tripping? Probably far less likely to be breaking shit.

There's also the fact that, if you're starting at level 3, you'll want to adjust and scale encounters, especially if you have something like PoW available. "One big boss" is going to melt even in 1pp-only, but a big boss and a bunch of mooks turns into a pretty interesting fight.

>>54406996
PoW's big problem is autists who don't know how it works, and the fact that the errata to tune down known damage bloat is taking too fucking long to come out. It has lots of cool ideas but people screech because the overtuned big numbers crowd out the actual cool shit in their mind. People also end up narrowing in on the big numbers when building, which makes an un-fun arms race to get big numbers.

SoP has corner cases in which it's "better" than Vancian, but overall is less powerful. The only big issues it has are the designers have retarded notions of "balance" in particular areas, like insisting that Divination Sphere spend a fuckload of talents in order to get equal functionality to the Detect Magic cantrip, and making cantrips themselves an optional rule that you either beg your GM for or are forced to spend a feat on.
>>
>>54406996
Mostly by feel, and by leveraging half a decade of encounter design experience.

I've played most initiators, and played alongside a cadre of Spherecasters, so I have a general picture of what those classes are capable of. Then I study the fuck out of my players' sheets, and figure out exactly what they can do.

There's no one size fits all approach to GMing base PF, but you at least have the CR to provide a guideline. With PoW in the mix, CR is no longer useful in any way, shape, or form.
>>
>>54407030
>playing a non-initiator, non-smiter
Not to sound condescending, but what do you /do/ in combat? Just full attack and charge? Is that ever fun even without PoW?
>>
>>54406996

>>
>>54407124

You came -close- to hitting the target board this time. but you've got the wrong player and game.
>>
>>54406986
Guess I didn't directly spell it out, so here it is:

Serious apps don't focus solely on invoking a specific feeling. They are interesting regardless of gender, race, and the reader's sexual preference; except when dealing with issues directly related to one of those things. In short, serious apps are just good characters. Joke apps are stereotypes, fapbait, edgelords, etc.

I 110% guarantee no one would pay your character any mind if they were a male dwarf or something other than a girl in skintight clothing. Cyna may be closer to a serious app than most (I dunno the reviewers motivations for that, since I didn't write it), but when taken in the context of your body of work, she just blends in.

Rinka was a decent character for 1 specific game, with 1 specific GM. You need to move on.
>>
What makes an interesting character to begin with?
>>
>>54407279

Serious characters don't get into games, and they don't get lewds even if they get into them.

People on /pfg/ want their fetishdimensional sexpots and jokes wrapped up in lewd packages.

Trust me, I know. I'm the dull rock in my game's pile of lewd jewelry.
>>
>>54407363
Sad, but true.
>>
Would you rather your character been seen as a joke or an NPC?
>>
>>54407279
But Cynn is nothing like Rinka you fucking mongoloid. They are entirely different characters in a lot of fucking ways, holy shit.

Cynn would probably be thought of as a good app as a male dwarf, or elf or whatever, because the core of the app is still that of a character who fits in with the themes of iron gods, a character who wants to learn more about everything there in order to build their badass robot. It literally doesn't matter to the character, they are interesting enough for the campaign regardless of their race and gender.

Also, I'm not sure how focusing on invoking a specific feeling is bad? Surely if an app invokes a feeling rather than not, the app that invokes a feeling is better. Isn't it a sign of good writing to invoke a feeling? Holy fuck. What are you on about

This is the whole problem with /pfg/ on apps, you guys are trying to write 13 page fucking stories that frankly, nobody gives a shit about or cares about. RPG characters are not meant to be finished hunks of iron, they aren't supposed to have an epic backstory, they're supposed to be looking FORWARD, they should be a basis upon which the full character is built over the course of their adventures

Like ya'll niggas need to think, you don't look at a character at the start of a book as their entire character, and if you skip to the end of the book to see what they've become, thats fucking boring and dumb. Your idea of a 'serious' character IS a fucking NPC.

>>54407354

Another one I remember was when a friend of mine came out of the hospital after her appendix exploded. She wrote up an entire archetype for the gunslinger when she was high on pain meds and fighting an infection.

Long and short, it was an orc archetype specializing in pistol whipping people and throwing guns at them. The pistol whip deed gains scaling damage, so a pistol deals 1d8, then 1d10, and so on until reaching 2d8 damage per swing, and eventually being free and being able to do attacks of opportunity, and the archetype can throw their weapons at a range of twenty feet, and instead of gaining dex to damage, you increase the throw range of a gun, and if it's a critical hit, the gun goes off and shoots the guy you plinked for critical damage.

She called it the Gun-shy.

Cynn is much more confident, and moreso, is actually righteous in her confidence, in addition she has real problems with authority, to outright having an anarchist streak. Her megalomania is outright part of her. Her 'penchant for mechanics' isn't a penchant, its an obsession, to the point where she's willing to delve into the dangerous lands of numeria just to learn more about robots

Rinka's entire deal is that her overconfidence is a shield for her insecurities, she hides her race, she hides her fears, she hides everything behind the shield of her false identity. ITS A FARCE. Also can in no way can be described as a 'shortstack'. Rinka's penchant for mechanics is a very small part of her character, she's mostly about magic and explosions.

You're equating a character who at her heart is a shrinking violet hiding everything about herself from the world by creating a character based on books she read, to a character who is actually a megalomaniac anarchist who wants to build robots and smash all that oppose her, and outright thinks of stupid people as 'lesser'

How do you guys handle animal companions? It's my first campaign I'm GMing and one of my players had a heavily minmaxed half orc barbarian with the animal companion archetype and a warcat and now that he has got level 7 and the pet leveled up he's doing too much for my tastes.

Up till now I've been letting him use the warcat as another character without any checks or repercussions to make flanks, full round attacks and all of that all as a free action.

Should I keep doing that or make it harder for him to do dodgy stuff with it?
>>
>>54408200

The thing is she also had Onryou's basic personality, though with a much heavier accent on being a priestess rather than just a small-town girl. Generally speaking, she was more apt to serious the fuck up, and ended up as the party's diplomat on a few occasions simply because nobody else wanted to.

But seriously, fuck that group. Two mostly-silent randos and the abominable asshole they were basically babysitting, and he was the reason I left.

They never really had close familial relationships growing up, so the prospects of knighthood and helping those around them seemed like a decent idea. The thought process being something like "if I help my community, maybe I find a place I belong to". My plan was to have them try and be a dependable person, but have a few insecurities to overcome.
>>
>>54407966
A lot of my more entertaining character concepts have been gestalt, just because it's easier to slap something decent together, but someday I hope to play a good ol' Vivesectionist alchemist. Not even a natural attack alchemist, just a Rogue knockoff that was a shitty doctor trying to get by in his backstory. He hopes adventuring will help him unlock the secrets of better methods of healing people. There's also the Occultist, who just wants to be a good warrior to make his ancestors proud, and is a generic adventurer type. Both are half-elves,
because I'm an uncreative hack, and in a gestalt, they would be mashed together and he'd be conflicted between his family's lineage of warriors and his desire to be a good doctor

Unchained rogue taking minor and major magic is far more effective - minor magic is at will, major magic is 1/point of int bonus per day, min 1/d. Take the vanish spell and it works at the rogues level.
>>
>>54408266
Sure. The Ungermaw/Aberrant is an old idea I had for a character raised by a cult to be host to an eldritch horror. I considered applying for ROTJR with an older non-Ungermaw version of the character but I pussied out.

The Gingerbread Witch is a generally good person whos tiefling impulses mixed with her Gluttony patron makes her think of others in terms of food at inappropriate times. I imagine her as a spherecaster who uses Creation to create rock candy barriers and molasses traps.

The Vivisectionist/Chirugeon mostly came about because I think it's hilarious that the good doctor archetype and Dr. Moreau archetype are completely compatible. He's a traveling doctor who wanders around and heals people to try and make up for her past as a mad scientist.

>are there many other gestalts you're keen on?
More than I have ever bothered to record, on account of there being so many different chargens involved, and I've got two specifically for Avowed. Without avowed, 70%~ of my builds are Int based, and the other 30% are wisdom-based. Off the top of my head I had a Jiangshi-born Dhampir that used Jolly's Mercurial Duelist and Exposed archetypes, but I can't remember exactly what it was I planned to gestalt that with. Probably a heavily archetyped alchemist, with a bit of begging to be able to brew up Inflicts so I can actually heal myself.

While it requires jury-rigging to get the archetypes to stack, a Scaled Fist/MoMS UMonk||Body Pact Avowed focused on AoO's and grapples is at the top of my list, but there's no combo feat for Grasp and Channel.

Androids have to eat and breathe but not sleep. They do have to rest to regain spells, however, as that isn't called out as not being required (unlike Elan, who only have to meditate 4 hours to gain the benefit of 8 hours of rest, specifically including spell rest time) They're humanoids with a construct subtype, but they're not constructs Think of them as biological androids and you would be accurate.

His family were nice people. Reallllly nice people.

He was a tiefling who just /happened/ to be born under an eclipse and at a time when the town the nobles lorded over was at an all time high stress point. I leaned more heavily on the octopus angle for biology with some bullshit fantasy stuff just because. When out of the water, her ability to experience emotions was deadened, so she was logical and her speech was very measured as not to offend humans, since she was a monster, after all. She was polite and kept her distance. When in the water, she became more emotive, overly so. She ended up being considered the smartest person the PCs knew because her advice was level-headed and she didn't take sides. Her persona was crafted to be as acceptable to others as possible, which was a nod to octopodes' ability to mimic and camouflage. She couldn't understand friendship, as a nod to their solitary nature, and she understood that humans were a race that needs friendship and community, so she was trying her hardest to learn friendship to better fit in. A lot of the finer points were glossed over by others, since they just wanted to fuck, but the character was celebate, since she didn't want to constrict anybody to death, and she hated the idea that they were designed to fuck humans to create more monster girl weapons. I'd like to do that character again with better lore and better players. The idea of monstrous races having vastly different attitudes about things due to physiological and societal reasons is good as hell to me.

For the 'maw, I'm undecided. I'd like to go for a subdued angle. He's hungry always. He does what he does to feed that hunger in a way that isn't destructive, but the sensation is always there, gnawing at him. This keeps him a bit distant from others, unless he's eating while interacting. Another way is gluttony in any abstract sense, a hunger for everything. Attention, money, power, food, affection. This would be a much bigger personality.

Zatoichi is undecided. I just like the idea.

Sorry for novel, I just really liked the character is all.

Another is a Void Prophet ex-priest torn from his divine power by his encounter with the void. His faith would be twisted by this into a mockery. He would value similar virtues, but they'd be slightly off, and as he fights and uses more of his power, the distortion becomes more apparent. Kind of a blending of Alexander from Hellsing and Krieg from Borderlands 2 when fighting, ranting and quoting snippets of scripture mixed with what would be considered blasphemous proselytizing. Fun flavor of what allies feel when being brought into his Collective and the juxtaposition of how calm and friendly he is outside of combs could be neat.

The cantrip/detect magic thing is annoying, but the balance with spheres isn't too bad - just a few things like weather, conjuration, some of the destruction sphere tricks, and the incanter dip.
