For the straps and boot leather on these guys, I was thinking of just patching up the black primer with abaddon black to make sure the edges are clean, then giving it a dark grey highlight and leaving it at that. Do you think that would look ok or would it seem lazy?

According to Sentinels of Terra, a red helmet (possibly with white stripe) or red crest on a yellow helmet indicates that the model is a sergeant. A black helmet is a "Sternhelm", or veteran sergeant. I think consistency is pretty much left to the vagaries of which Studio Lad has painted them, though, as the same book also shows examples of terminator squad sergeants who wear the same colours (yellow with red stripe) as the other models in their squads.

The 40k realm of battle tends to come out really badly cast. We had to scrub the store one and then ask a car wash to wash it for us to get all the grease off it , it was warped with whole areas outirght melted and not filled in.
It wasn't the only one, every one we sold we had to take back and send back to GW. The regular RoB boards always came out fine, as did the AoS ones, But the 40k ones just don't fill properly.

pic related is actually really easy to pull off
the colours I use for the armour are : Agrax Earthshade, Castellan Green, as well as German Cam Bright Green and Pale Sand from Vallejo Model Color range (but you can use Varpstone Glow and Ushabti Bone if you're using Citadel).

1. Paint the armour with Castellan Green

2. Wash with Agrax

3. *the most difficult part* apply very watered down Castellan Green (almost wash consistency) again, but only on the raised areas of the armour, to create a shadow effect, like in pic related, you can see the lower parts are darker (make sure you don't get any paint into the recesses)

4. add some some Bright Green and a bit of Ushabti Bone and do an edge highlight on everything, it doesn't have to be very thin

5. mix 50/50 Bright Green and Pale Sand (and maybe a bit of Castellan, if it's too bright for you) and do a 2nd edge highlight, but make sure to make it very thin, and only around the sharpest edges (you might want to use the side of your brush here)

6. Use some pure Pale Sand, with just a tiny drop of green in it (for that slight greenish tone) and put dots on the tips of the edges

7. PROFIT

I also decided to go for the blue/grey uniforms, to honour the old Cadian colour scheme.

>>54373580
As an example, how would you paint clothes like pic related to get some realistic result
>>
>>54373620
For high quality you can follow the tabletop-ready method but add an extra step after the wash which is to glaze the model with the base colour so you create a model with much more "pop". After you've glazed a little, you can highlight as normal. Between each highlight step you can glaze with that colour to create a much more even transition between each colour. Your final highlight should not be glazed or you will make the model look like wax.

You can create your own wash colours by mixing lahmian medium and any colour in a 75/25 ratio respectively, if you don't want to use the standard citadel ones.
>>

Plain old trucks, boyz, painboys, bikers, and maybe gretchen or stormboys
>>
>>54373767
Thanks anon, that's very helpful! If everything goes well I'll post results
>>
>>54373794
Run a trukk-heavy army. Throw like 5 of them on the board and put specialized units in them--Nobz, Burnas, etc. Stormobyz work with them because they can speed up and down the board with the trukks. Skip warbikers, unless they're nobz on bikes.
>>
>>54372844
Is good for painting realistic worn looking armor instead of cartoonish edge highlights.
>>
>>54373814
Remember that a glaze is not a wash. It is thinned paint, like a wash, but the application is somewhat less intuitive — you have to put your brush to the area you want to leave dark, then drag the brush (and thus the pigment) toward the lighter area.
>>
>>54373831

WIP Chimera for my empire/brettonian regiment

They're probably not gonna have many vehicles, but I'm going for a "merchant cavalry" thing where the nobles who go to war get all the bling in the regiment and ride in Chimeras, while the peasants are in conscript blobs. Might even buy some Tempestus? Can Scions be counts-as? Why did they remove the entry for generic storm troopers? Can't I run elite infantry anymore?

Literally no one will care. If it's a guardsmen with decent looking armour and hot shot Lasguns they'll be cool with it. Storm troopers are scions, they're the same thing. They just got a new name so they can copyright it.

GW is fine with head swaps as long as your manager is cool with it. My advice is to talk to him in person and inform him, and if he asks you the question what you'll say if someone asks what heads those are just say "they're an old forgeworld conversion kit" instead of "oh I got them from pig iron miniatures" or something.
My gw is fine with headswaps, pic related has some 3rd party heads in them

They could have done that at any time in the last 30 years.
It's more like GW wants to be able to shout at other companies calling their suspiciously compatible models something that appears in their army lists.

Right around the time of the Chapterhouse lawsuit all army list entries and characters that did not have official models were dropped and after that codex releases came out with missing units that were supplemented a month later in White Dwarf, cause they were afraid somebody could claim they made 'Imperial Dingbats' first.

What's the best way to go if I want to paint the HH Death Guard color scheme for the whitish parts ?

I was thinking a Rakarth Flesh base and Pallid Wych Flesh for highlights but what about the wash ? Agrax gives a dirty look I am quite fond of but I like the yellow tint Seraphim Sepia gives as well. Also Athonian Camoshade gives a nice "sickly" green that I find on theme for the DG.

Any tips ? Also, what's the best way to make rusty metal without rellying on pigments ?

>>54375015
I'd recommend super thin 0.5 mm stuff or something similar. Though making the pieces and fitting them to the legs is gonna be fiddly and take a lot of work.
You may be better off doing a 'master' of your leg armor and make molds of that. That way you have to do the hard part only once and you'll get a consistent look across all the pieces.
There is something called Oyumaru that you can use.

Though considering how good you are at the whole converting stuff and the material costs you may be better off buying 3rd party bits. Depends on how many of those you are gonna need as well though.

This is just a picture of something that I had saved, you can also look into the bits by Mad Robot. They have a set of bits that is based on the armor from the marines from Aliens. Should be pretty close to the picture.
There are other companies selling similar stuff as well too Anvil Industries has stuff you could use. There are too many to list really.

But the SA continued right up until 1945?

As for the general concept of stormtroopers the SS were in no way remarkable for their use of aggressive light infantry tactics, in fact the majority of the Waffen SS divisions in no way resembled the stormtroopers of the First World War, either being standard infantry, mechanised troops or armoured units. Frankly the concept of the stormtrooper was dead when the tank came into it's own between the wars, and very little of the concept remained by the end of 1940. To refer to the SS as storm troopers, either due to their highly indirect line of descent from the SA which in itself was very little to do with the stormtroopers of the First World War or because of their tactics in the second is simply wrong.

An airbrush has many pros. If you aren't going to get crazy with details, you can use your airbrush as a beginner to primer/base coat your models. With flow improver, you can essentially turn any paint you have and turn it into a spray paint.

Most use it it augment normal brush painting, even small models. Once you master your work flow planning, you can do some amazing things with even some basic zenithal highlighting and normal brush painting.

So, I have this airbrush that's just been sitting in a box for the past few years. I've never modeled anything, but I was looking into wargames when this came on sale and I figured it would be a good investment if I ever decided to start painting. Anyway, 8th edition came out and I decided now would be a good time to get into 40k, so I was wondering, what do I need to get this airbrush working?
Compressor recommendations?
Do I need a respirator?
Any other recommended buys?
I also plan on painting in a open garage, is that good enough in terms of ventilation?
>>
>>54377998

Deer antlers, but strapped on with cloth or other strips of binding material, and other trophy stuff like Lizardmen feathers, Imperial weapon magazines, Imperial grenades on shoulder pads, Imperial pouches.
>>
>>54378133
>Compressor recommendations?

Anything with a tank that fits your budget and painting space. WITH A TANK. WITH.

>Do I need a respirator?

Depends on the paint you're spraying. Low pressure spraying with acrylics you can get away with a doctor's mask or even no mask if it's a spray friendly brand. Others like enamels or lacquers or messy paints will create visible clouds of paint dust that requires respirators. Respirators are cheap and you will probably never have to replace the disposable filters.

>Any other recommended buys

Moisture trap, extra hose, and if you're a fancy pants, a cleaning pot that doubles as an airbrush holder. Or you can just spray your airbrush into an empty bottle or tub or rags to empty it, and leave it on the table when it's not in use instead of a holder, but I recommend buying the pot. It looks cool and is very useful and good to have for what it does, to prevent messes and banging your airbrush.

The paints I used for this dudes white are, base pallid wych flesh, recess shade seraphim sepia, layer pallid wych flesh, if you want you can add some brighter highlights with white scar, but I like it a little better without them. I didn't want to do rusty trim as drybrushing those thin ass trim pieces while avoiding the white sounds like hell to me, so I did a dark bronze colour instead, may do a little bit of verdigris here and there with nihilahk oxide later but not really feeling yet so I'm not sure if I will

>>
>>54379208
I never liked the bright red and yellow fists color scheme, always looked like McMarines to me, and it always looks appalling to me. Not bad for a first time painter, though, I've seen worse. You should work on picking out more details, like tubes on helmets and feet and the armor joints, to break up the yellow. Also you should go over the flat areas where the shade dried with the base color again just to clean it up, and work on getting some highlights in as well. also get a pin vice to drill barrels and make sure you get all your mold lines, the one on the heavy bolter's helmet is really triggering me

Decided to make inquisitor Voke from the third siege of Vraks book

Had to convert his storm bolter because i didnt have a left handed one. Chopped up a right handed storm bolter and the big box magazine from the sternguard bolter and glued it all to his arm

I left the scope on it because i thought it fit with how goofy and overdesigned inquisition gear can be.

The guardsman took a long drag on his Iho stick before he spoke again.

"Yeah, we never saw much of Inquisitor Voke. Mostly because we tried to avoid him as much as possible."

"Why did you try to avoid a Holy Inquisitor?"

"Well, not him per se. I met him on a few occasions actually."

"Really!"

"Yeah, a bit grouchy, no time for fools, but not a bad person really.
The trouble was his honour guard..."

"What honour guard?"

Another long draw.

"During the entire siege, he was constantly accompanied by this marine. This Marine was almost always covered in some kind of blood or such liquid, and had an... odd ... habit of yelling loudly at any nearby guardsman about basic lifestyle features to maintain health.
I first encountered him when I was giving directions to the Inquisitor about where to find the various mess halls, lavatories, basic camp facilities of note.
Then this giant black armoured space marine just stomps up to me, covered in blood, helmetless and nearly manic."

"Yes."

"And he storms up to me, bends over, so his face was right in mine, eyes boring into my very soul..."

"Yes."

"And he just screams at me 'Stay Properly hydrated!' and jump-packs out."

You definitely want to use the glaze rather than the wash, you will get a MUCH more consistent covering on the larger areas because that's what the glaze is meant to do. Since you already have the agrax underneath the pre-shading is done.
