Just popped out an Ayyar for Infinity after a rough time with the palette. Sometimes it's difficult to get a model to look good on its own and fit in with the rest of the force, especially when you're talking about skirmish games.

I'm creating some enforcers/militias/veterans/gangster of some kind as NPCs for DarkHeresy.
Starting with cultists, adding spare parts from Guardsmen and Marines.

Any suggestion for the colour scheme? It's mainly for urban areas (Hives and Imperial cities).

>>
>>54348672

I find that's usually a problem if you try to copy the official schemes which have some really weird color combos going on.

Usually keeping it limited to less colors helps a lot.
>>
>>54348704
I don't see that as much as the issue of keeping color ratios in order while still maintaining a coherent piece.

You see it a lot in official schemes when they decide something like "all armor must be blue" and then paint bright-ass blue knee pads on an otherwise desaturated model.

First of my tzaangors from the silver tower box kinda finished, some overspills to clean up, base will be done later, etc

Any C&C welcomed
>>
>>54348592
Why wouldn't you be able to do that? As long as you stick him on the proper base there shouldn't be any problem. Fluffwise the sizes of Daemon Princes are extremely varied.
>>
>>54348592

FW sells large DPs that are that big. Avatar too.
>>
>>54348810
Almost exactly what you would expect from a beginner doing a quick paint.
The right Bolter needs work, when you cut it off the sprue, you also need to tidy it, so one cannot see the mark, a good trick is making two snips (and not just twisting it out, which can cause that to happen).
Also, don't go overboard on the highlight on the bolter (it looks like you tried drybrushing with too much paint on the brush, which is understandable for a new guy)
Also, a few armour panels are not an even yellow, which is something you need to work on , as you will need the ability to paint evenly in everything (admittedly, you chose the certified hardest colour to start painting, yellow.
Now I look inside the helmet area and I see the cables are not painted, but are yellow. Nor are the lenses painted. These are important features of the model that add a lot of detail to your model and you should always try to paint them. I would recommend painting the harder to reach components separate, and then putting the model together and touching up the painting (feels a bit weird, but it helps so much). Finally, attention to what you're painting, such as the exposed bolt shells in the Magazines of the Bolters, or the soft armour joints in the elbows or legs, or the aforementioned pipes and lenses. Adding difference to the model makes it so much nicer to look at.
In short, keep improving, watch painting videos (Warhammer TV on youtube) and keep at it.
Tell you now, the base is looking fine.

Converting up the mini death guard kit. Because the champion in it looks shite. Need to smooth out some of the greenstuff on the champion and I managed to lose my only combi-plasma so I'm waiting for another to show up in the post.

Also making a homemade blight launcher, working off the principle that if all their bolt guns look different, their blight launchers ought to also. Need to greenstuff all the gaps and put a load of rivets on it but the shape is basically done.

Not sure I will ever use the model,. More of an exercise in building a gun, as it's something I've never tried before. If I did use it though it means once completed I'll have 2 plasma guys, 2 blight launcher guys and 2 combi-plasma champions.

Thanks for the feedback. What colour would you paint the lenses to have a nice contrast with red/yellow helmet ? I'll admit I was a bit bored towards the end so I rushed it a bit. I guess I really need to take my time.
Thanks for the compliment on the base that was the most fun I had (a shame basing is the very last step of painting a mini)
>>
>>54349306
>What colour would you paint the lenses to have a nice contrast with red/yellow helmet ?
Not that anon, but green is the way to go. It's how smurf sarges go, and how the BA and 1kS typically roll. Green n red work well together, but you gotta make it a vibrant, glassy green.
>>
>>54349028
slick job, though having the chainmail under his pauldron "hanging" upwards triggers me a little bit

Got to wonder why they stuck another champion in the easy to build set. You'd think they'd just do three basic dudes to bulk the starter squad to 10-strong.
>>
>>54349306
Am that anon.
Go with green.
Either red or green lenses generally, and the helmet is red, so therefore green.

>>
>>54349419
Yeah I've cut some of the chainmail off for that reason, I may have to cut more of it.

I think the extra champion lets you build 2 5man units with the dark imperium set, but then once they bring out a standard box of 5 or 10 then it won't really work so well. It's the loadouts that frustrate me, but it's let me go wild with conversions at least.

Been checking the links in the OP for proxies, while there's some interesting stuff around I'm at a loss for good eldar/dark eldar models.

I found the wargame exclusive warp spiders and they're really cool, only downside if I have to find one is the fact that they're all female, but I'm at a loss for alternatives. I have no idea how to order from ghost miniatures and I still have to find dark eldar models.

>>54351829
what do you need/want to proxy for DE? the whole range is pretty new, in contrast to eldar
>>
>>54351900
To be honest the official stuff is good enough already, and some boxes are relatively cheap. I'm just looking around for alternatives. Wyches, incubi, even basic warriors...mainly the eldar part rather than the homunculi one. I want to see the options before buying anything.

For eldar my main gripe about the official models are obviously the spiders, I can live with two poses, but only if they're not boring as hell.
>>
>>54351529

You can skip the clear rod holding the shark and just place it on top of correct water-layer?
>>
>>54351529
I think you have to consider how color changes under water. I would suggest a blue-greenish wash, especially to dull the reds, and also you could try to replicate the effect of shadow and lights that water does
>>
>>54351976
To be honest you are not gonna find a lot. Orks, Imperial Guard and Space Marines and to a lesser degree Chaos Marines are the biggest players for 3rd party or alternate stuff.
Aside from the wargames exclusive stuff, the single HF mini and the female scorpion that Chapterhouse did, but stopped after being sued by GW I can't really think of any alternative models.
The market for Eldar/Dark Eldar is smaller.

The only thing you could look at is Raging Heroes. They do some Dark Elves and I think they may have some of the models out as a sci-fi version too.

For the regular troop choices I can't say I've ever seen anything like what you are asking for.

If you have an issue with the Warpspiders you could always convert them.

For fantasy miniatures there are more offerings though. A dark elf miniature with a 40k weapon could pass as Dark Eldar without a problem most of the time. Maybe looking into that will yield more results.

>>
>>54352098
The "trouble" with fantasy is that they often look too fantasy, but yeah, with some work they could get very nice and a DE plastic box should have more than enough bits. Like I said the real priority is getting different spiders since sadly they're also my favourite unit so I'd be happy to have better models for them, luckily they're the easy ones to replace.
>>
I notice a tendancy for the pigment of the paint to flow into the crevices of my models, and be too watery. It could be that I thin them too much or not shake them up enough. How long do you shake up your paints before using them?
>>
>>54352266
They sound too thinned. Try using a medium instead of water so not to alter the characteristics of the paint

I've stripped this model a couple times and now it has this weird white-chalky film over it along with some paint that won't come off. Does anyone know how I might get it off? I've been using Super Clean in the past and Acetone and neither help. Thanks in advance.

you could try liquid green stuff. I've had some success in using it to fill in those gaps from 3d printed stuff. Just know that it likes to shrink as it dries so it might take a few layers.

They don't react well to primer. I sprayed them with primer and it NEVER dried, just stayed gooey. I painted pic related with no primer and it's fine. The black bits on the base are actually primer that just wouldn't come off.

Should the back of the crest include the same teal/yellow striping as the front? I honestly don't know.

I've painted tons of Reaper Bones with and without primer. I use white AP spray primer when I do prime them and it works fine. You don't need to prime them but if you're using thin paints your first layer will not stick if they aren't primed. Generally if it's a mini I'm going to spend more time on to make it look very nice I will prime Reaper Bones.

Metal is a little bland. Try bringing the shadows down a bit and using some more color. I'd suggest a deep purple recess personally, but really anything to deepen things would do.
>>
>>54356670
Picture's a little blurry, but your total tonal contrast is off. If you put this guy into gray scale then all of the fabrics would have the same level of brightness to them. To alleviate this, I recommend bringing the front of the hood up a few steps along with the banner while deepening the shadows (the banner especially looks flat which could also be said about the mask).

>>
>>54361719
Quality can sometimes be iffy, so tread with caution. I haven't bought anything at full price in years now, desu. That's why I recommend a FLGS that runs a discount, or an eBay store that does the same.

If you can't get the blade to work, then I would (sadly) advise getting rid of the entire top half and redoing it. Honestly the size is getting to look a bit silly. If you can't get the card to make a good blade, then I might suggest taking the green stuff off and you could use the weapon head as a backpack ornament.
For substitute weapons, look at various Slaanesh weapons, and try make one of those. Or you could try and make a pseudo 30K Chaplain Crozius in a similar manner as this one.

Love everything else, though, orange and the green look great.

No photos available due to lack of camera. Sorry.

Managed to get some sculpting done today for my inquisitor and one of her henchmen, an exodite using a powerfist. (counts as Deathcult Assassin)

Inquisitor has chest resculpted nude currently, with the bit's corset ready to be redetailed. Legs bit have knee armor sculpted and feet pre-shape sculpted, but need to wait for that to dry since it's too high risk to try to add more.

Exodite will be wearing a bodysuit with cleavage window and thighhigh boots. Got the chest resculpted, as well as the harlequin legs reposed to be less dancey.

Gotta way till the greenstuff dries before doing cleanup as needed and continuing sculpting details.

I still intend to do a brighter Flash Gits Yellow highlight on the carapace to differ it from the body. Currently its Averland Sunset + Sepia wash on the body with (2 thin coats) Yriel Yellow carapace. You think a Flash Git highlight will make it stand out?

It might do, I'd even consider something like I suggested, a bone color, as a very fine edge highlight so there's a clear divide in shell carapace from the rest.

I commend you for taking on advice. We see a LOT of people go "UH NUH, I like what I'm doing" and get all upset.

My advice is paint the landing gear and jets on the back of his legs in black and then drybrush a dark silver, ike you originally did on the bolters.
Then edge highlight them with a lighter silver.

This will bring more contrast to the model and make the details pop.

not entirely sure what you mean, since the only criteria of a khorne berzerker is a bolt pistol, chainsword, and red power armor (well the color isn't even a criteria really, just typical). so literally just make anything you want that has these two or three things and it is a berzerker.

if you specifically mean the armor/helmet of the berzerker kit, note that those are supposed to be world eaters. their armor is just a clusterfuck of heresy era pieces (mark v and some other shit) and the "bunny ears" on their helmets are caedere remissum, a world eaters legion-specific honor badge similar to how ultramarines have valour crests. only world eaters would have the bunny ears, but not all zerkers are world eaters, so your dudes can look like practically anything as long as they are close combat marines who worship khorne.

I've got citadel spray, vallejo airbrush primer and gesso. What order is it best to apply them in? heat and humidity will have an effect on paint, most notably in how quickly it dries

Not at all, it's a useful technique for textures like furs and stones for beginner and intermediate painters.

But I wouldn't be painting a £200 or whatever kickstarter all that way. Like all techniques it's limited in what it is effective on and can look lazy.

It varies by army. For example, the breakdown for the Dark Imperium box is as follows:

1 Primaris Captain in Gravis Armour (40mm base)
2 Primaris Lieutenants in Mk X Powered Armour (40mm bases)
1 Primaris Ancient in Mk X Powered Armour (40mm base)
10 Primaris Intercessors in Mk X Powered Armour (32mm bases)
5 Primaris Hellblasters in Mk X Powered Armour (32mm bases)
3 Primaris Inceptors in Mk X Powered Armour (40mm flight bases)

1 Nurgle Lord of Contagion in Cataphractii Terminator Armour (50mm base)
1 Noxious Blightbringer (40mm base)
1 Malignant Plaguecaster, Sorceror of Nurgle (40mm base)
7 Plague Marines of Nurgle (32mm bases)
20 Poxwalkers (25mm bases)
1 Foetid Bloat-drone (60mm base)

your brush has to be almost dry, I can tell your brush has too much water and/or paint on it. common mistake among people who have trouble with highlighting where they end up too thick, or splotchy like this

although in your case it's not too bad, you could fix most of that by just going over it again for good coverage. some parts still need cleaned up tho. it's not *that* bad.
>>
>>54365343
Biostrip 20, amazing. Dunk the model in, put in some tupperware and close for an hour, then scrub and rinse. Cleans down to the plastic (doesn't work on resin though, melts it).

>>54365529

>>
>>54367195
>your brush has to be almost dry
Actually, that's wrong. Well, maybe not wrong if you're just starting, but also not the right way. To get smooth highlights that don't 'rip' or go on too thick you just need to use a brush with a fine tip and learn to load it less. Enough to do the line you want, then dip and roll again for the next.
>>

1. Use your size 1 or 0 kolinsky sable. If you have a choice of brushes, the ones with the longest hairs will usually give the best results.
2. Get the paint the right consistency - a little thinner than for a layer but not so much it flows like water. The capillary action of the brush should draw it up but not flood it.
3. Don't overload the brush
4. Use the edge of the brush if possible, not the tip, and draw it along the edge at about 45 degrees to it.
5. If you have to use the tip (e.g. due to model pose) then hold the brush in the same direction as the intended line, touch the surface and draw the brush smoothly towards you, along the line. This takes a lot more practice to get perfect than using the edge of the brush.
6. Clean your brush frequently as this consistency of paint will be drawn into the ferrule easily and also dry quickly on the outside.
