Dunno, I just gradually add "personality" to the initial idea. I think I wrote most of the waifus in three phases:

Sometimes it takes a lot of work like in Cindy's case - I had problems with NOT making her a simple "it's not like I like you or anything, b-baka!" tsundere. Sometimes you're just lucky and the idea "writes itself" like Helen. Sometimes the character needs to be rewritten because the final result is disappointing. Initially Catherine was supposed to be a boring romantic who melts in your hand like Elvira, but she was too boring like that. I know making her a fujoshi didn't make the things much better, but I thought it's funny and makes her cute, in a way. Sometimes you just fuck up and end up with a fetishbait with a poorly written personality like Alice (I can't even tell if people see Alice like I see her, she's not that bad in my mind).

Hades means that as long as I act prudently, my business ventures will succeed. Athene helps me to take the wise action, so that I will be acting prudently as often as possible. Hades protects me from accidental death, but not my own foolishness, however with Athene I can act with greater wisdom, so that's less of an issue. Wealth from Hades can also help me get the power to expose corruption in government and maybe even have some people who Hades points out as having cheated death assassinated. The combination of all that, plus worshiping openly, plus Hestia's free grace should keep me relatively safe from divine wrath.

All in all, I get wealth, wisdom, skill in business and the arts, faster learning, safety, and peace of mind, and for the most part all I need to do is be charitable and fight corruption, which is what I would want to do with loads of money anyway.

Decided to give this Cyoa thing a try and am posting some progress as I want some feedback on how I should handle something.
So I was wondering if I should have mutations, malignancies, traits, and future shit be dependent upon the source of mutation someone selects or if I should go with the original idea of having it so every mutation must have a malignancy and a set number of everything else.

Also any opinions on if these options are all sorta equal and balanced with one another would be nice as well.

It's hard to judge balance without defining how many powers/drawbacks you can have. Personally, I'm a fan of the "first power is free, more cost a drawback", but it lacks the nuance of a point system.

I see the potential for abuse in bestial or hive, but that's dependent on the average anon's grasp of biology, likely not too strong. Not that I'd personally bother, since hive ticks my only material fear.

On a more nitpick level, Controlled Progression probably needs some guidelines about how quickly you'd gain more powers and to what degree. I wonder about how Ichor and Regeneration might interact, I suspect others will as well.

For tying mutations to powers, I believe the Super Soldier cyoa did a good job with that, only tying a few obvious powers to the origin, while Fleshweaver's Clinic did a wonderful job with that aspect of horrific trade-offs, although I don't believe you'd want to go that far.

Yeah I wanted to avoid points as I preferred to make a Cyoa that was more a motivator and outlet for imagination you can sit down and go through relatively quickly instead of having to keep track of a number or stats anything. It is the kind of thing I like and thus the kinda thing I wanted to see more of.

And yes controlled progression is a bit of an oddity as is I was having difficulty coming up with meaningful traits and felt like I did poorly with some of the ones even there right now.
As for how mutations will work together I figured I would leave that to the imagination of the reader to not restrict any combos people may be able to think up, like in that example people may interpret it as their flesh regens at a normal rate and the ichor is countered by the healing and they are merely left with neat acid blood and putting off doctors

I would remove "sight" as an option for Sensory Deprivation; it's too risky a pick. Hearing is bad enough.

One positive mutation for free, plus another per malignancy, is a good place to start. One positive trait free. If you have the will, another negative section to balance out traits, things like enemies, is pretty classic.

That choice is hardly a choice then as people will always go with the hearing + 1 other and overall make it too strong a negative. The russian roulette style to the malignancy is what I think makes it a viable pick for people more willing to take risks, if you select it and merely lose your sense of smell and take it alongside something like marked one you effectively get 3 mutations with minimal downside, but it could also damn you. Make it so some mutations can only be picked with certain origins, while others being universal.

Alternatively, have it so that certain mutations have boosted effects when taken with ceratin origins. For example, Darksight for most origins is just that, seeing in the dark, but with Gifted it allows you, for example see through solid objects.


And most importantly, add some "mental" options (mutations, drawbacks, traits, whatever) - boosted intellect, hightened perception, keen relfexes (or the opposite for flaws).

You can now set fire to Anything and I mean ANYTHING. Wood? Easy. Metal? No sweat. Asbestos? No problem. Sand? Done and done. Fucking WATER? Explosively so.

The only thing that you can't set fire to is certain kinds of fluoride compounds such as fluoride minerals and specially treated metals. Also, you aren't immune to your own flames. If it gets out of control I recommend a good pair of running shoes.
