1) Are 3D printers currently useful for tabletop gaming?
2) Is this a good one to get?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1403065126/obsidian-3d-printer-high-quality-sleek-and-afforda

I'm tempted to get this for $100 and charge people at my FLGS to use it.

Bump? Anyone know either please?

It depends on the setting.

I use to have a 3d printer.

They can be useful but there's a big learning curve. General rules are don't get anything you see on Kickstarter, stay away from Microtech, and don't get anything less than 500.

I'll pass on this one then.

Thank you for the advice.

Domestically affordable one (under 1 grand with 100 microns precision) will do for scenery and assorted bits. Home printing whole mini will look sub-par and you're better off mold-casting.
Industrial ones are very useful, for many miniature companies the manufacturing process is now CAD design -> high precision master print -> mold -> production casting

The kikestarter looks overhyped and fake, I'd be extra vary of
>50-350 microns precision
I'd imagine it works somewhat reliably at 350 and the 50 is applicable only under very specific circumstances and will not be reliable.
I'd rather get something optimized for fixed 100 microns precision.

In both senses, this

My university has 2 3d printers for use, you just have to pay for the filament. I want to use it to make some vehicles for my orks because a lot of their vehicles look ugly and outdated. I've found some really great models that I want to print. Unfortunately even just a wartrak would take me like 30 hours to make which means waiting around the 3d printer for hours for a few days.

Hey OP, I work at a 3D printer company. I would say the one in your link is probably bullshit, not because that kind of tech is impossible but because

A) it comes off cuckscammer
B) $100 is fantasyland pricing for a decent printer

I won't reveal my employer and thus will not recommend our product (even if it is one of the best on the market), but go to >>>/diy/ /3dpg/ for more buyer's advice.

For /tg/-relevant info, I can say if you're a hobbyist a 3D printer is great for custom minis, scenery, props, etc. It will not approach the quality of traditional minis but that's not what you're here for. If you're an enthusiast who demands top quality, you'll have to wait another 5+ years minimum for 3D printing to meet your needs. That said, I'd accept 3D printed props and minis at my table any day.

I also recommend an isopropyl misting solution like polysher if you want super smooth prints; you can make one at home too.

Probably fake and 40kids generally won't buy 3D printed minis as they don't look as good or paint as well as traditional ones.
