Played my first game of 8th today. Man Guard had a significant buff. 5ish infantry squads with heavy weapons, company commander and commissar are ridiculous. Bait the charge with an understrength unit, take some casualties, fall back and blow them to shit with the rest of your guys.

The multiple command squad in chimera strategy is fucking solid too.

Since /wipg/ is slow as shit, I'll ask here. What's your preferred method of painting faces? Eyes to be specific. I see so many guides that contradict, some say paint them first, others say paint them last, some say paint the whites first, others the pupil. Is there one method that's better for someone who's very new to faces versus another?

Also, how the fuck do I into blending? My transitions are ass and I don't know what else to do to fix it. The paints are almost as thin as the water when I use them, too. Pic related is my best blends so far, but you can see the obvious color transitions instead of a smooth gradient.

What reason might a Knight house have an alliance with the Sisters of Silence?
>>
>>54227929
They're specialists in hunting big psyker xeno critters?
>>
>>54227929
Because the Inquisitor traveling with the SoS (let's just say the group is hunting some super dangerous psyker) commanded that the Knight House should assist him.
>>
>>54227929
Rival imperial knight household has a few psykers on staff or in the family (not as knight pilots, of course).
The Imperium being what it is, this house went "Oh shit! If Out rivals turn traitor or try to take over or holdings or whatever, we don't have any defences!" and promptly cozied up to the SoS.

Ok so I want to run a fluffy list of the last 30 Astral Knights in 1500 points after the World Engine incident.
I'm using the FW chaplain in a dread to represent the AK chapter master being a dread, and was wondering what to do with 9 models and 313 points. I also own three tarantulas and was planning on running them as assault cannon tarantulas if there are spare points.
Also what would be a good loadout for the chaplain dread?
As for how they'd play I was going to put the dread, the assault cents, dread, techmarine and apothecary in the stormraven and fly them upfield to dump into enemy forces.
So feedback and replies would be appreciated.

Scions work best as auxiliary to a guard force. The start collecting box for IG is pretty good.

Took some standard leman russes today, man I was surprised how good they were. If you can get into a nice position where you don't have to move much those 9 heavy bolter shots are brutal, the battle cannon was also surprisingly good given that I thought it would be shit. They are fucking hard to kill too, one survived two rounds of 4x multi melta shooting with two wounds left.

Most people I've seen use standard Russ' say they're pretty shit. forgeworld was broken before 6th and 7th, but then came formations which were almost always a better option than forgeworld, so forgeworld fags thought that since better options existed it was ok to say forgeworld is balanced. but now we're in 8th which is fairly well balanced and forgeworld is still making shit rules that result in stupid overpowered shit, and forgeworld fags think that opinions about forgeworld in 7th are still valid.

Everyone used them during the HH, but they had bitchy machine spirits that liked spacing loyalists and were prone to possession. Needless to say, the imperium stopped using them. They're more like boarding ships than actual drop pods, though, which is why they fly around.

They're actually pretty shitty this edition since A) they can no longer jink, B) are not hard to hit, C) must deploy their cargo after they Deepstrike unlike last edition, D) start taking HUGE penalties after suffering TWO DAMAGE, and finally E) they costly TWO HUNDRED FUCKING POINTS.

I have one that I used frequently last edition, but it's literally done nothing but die horribly in 8th

Nah FW has always had models that had either shit or amazing rules. I think it's just that because their crap is so ridiculously expensive that people only buy the OP models, because they don't want to drop a large amount of cash and go through the extra hassle of ordering from FW only to get something that is gonna gather dust on a shelf.
Not to mention that judging by the number of Riptides on eBay, there is a large number of 40k players that only use the most OP models they can get.

There are several ways asymmetry can create fun games. One of the big ones is designing scenarios such that a smaller force could realistically win over a larger force. Examples include pitched sieges, infiltration, smash and grab objectives. Think of all the most exciting scenes from war movies and shooty games and it's always an underdog story. Take the underpowered force and build a session around them in a way where they could succeed their objectives, even if that doesn't necessarily mean killing every enemy figure.

>>
>>54228689
That has literally nothing to do with power level or points though. You can just as easily have someone bring 500 points and the other person bring 1,000 points.

These kind of games can be fun on occasion but plenty of people just prefer two armies fighting on equal footing. It's not really right to say it's outright more interesting.
>>
>>54228655

Look at the profile and ask yourself if it's worth those 200pts. Personally, I don't think it is. Last edition, it was a 100pt deep striking flying assault transport. I could drop it down, let my Brute hang out inside, turboboost and jink, fly up to my target, hop out right next to them, and assault them.

Now, I have to immediately disembark while also being 9" away from them. At the same time, it's significantly more vulnerable and literally double the price.

>>
>>54228714
Sure. I don't mean to say that it's MORE interesting than balanced forces, only that it's diferent and interesting in its own unique and challenging ways. While power points don't SPECIFICALLY enable asymmetry, the less stringent adherence to balance may foster an atmosphere where it is more readily accepted. Compare a pickup game of seventh edition where you brought your list ready to play at a pre determined points value, calculated to the tenth of a cost of a model, every advantage wrung diligently from your book. The other player has done the same, and barring match ups of greatly imbalanced races (thinking orcs VS tau levels imbalance) you played a roughly evenly matched game. With power points, 50 points can give you armies of significantly diferent strengths, weaknesses, and numbers even in a mirror match. This may lead to an inherent "balancing" before the game begins of giving the lesser force tailored objectives to make the players have an equal chance of victory.

You may see a pitched battle, a couple units of space marines with some minor reinforcements taking on twice the number of their points in hordes of boyz and nobs. It would certainly be interesting to see what kind of thematic gameplay emerges when the focus shifts from competitive style play attempting to balance on a razors edge.

To be fair the ways rules have changed relentless wouldn't serve any purpose on skitarii, though it would be nice if dragoons and ironstriders had it.

>Donkey-Tanks can't squadron anymore and lose their stacking invulnerable save

I've found them pretty tough even without the 4++ with their huge increase in wounds.
>>
>>54228775
Do I need to softly whisper "point cost" into your ear while fondling your ass for you to get it? Sure if you compare one GW model to one FW model and ignore points cost, formation restrictions and unit size, the FW is over powered. If you actually consider that the average damage and durability for a FW model doesn't come close to the power curve per points as any generic GW model, your shit goes out the window.

Before you argue "LMAO, but eight got rid of points and formations :^)
Then balance doesn't matter AT ALL anymore and you might as well take what you want and decide between your opponent and yourself what constitutes balanced play. At that point, the dollar value of the model is a null point because the game is no longer balanced on a per model basis but rather by the two people playing. Gee, it's almost like winning isn't what makes playing toy soldiers fun
Inb4 fun is a buzzword, not an argument. You can call me a fag if you want, though.
>>
>>54228825
What about boyz spam? That's extremely pricey. Or russ spam

All the best lists in 8th are built around spamming loads of GW models

Forgeworld is 90% overpriced, underperforming units with cool models.
>>
>>54228753
it becomes pay to win when the unit's in game value directly correlates to its monetary value.
>>
>>54228714
With power levels you can just grab a bunch of figs you want to use and play against whatever models your opponent wants to use. It is literally THE best option for casual gaming (assuming you're not playing with dicks, of course, but even matched play isn't fun against dicks)
>>
>>54228787
Sounds like you're hoping that the two armies with the same PL will be imbalanced enough for the tailored objectives to be "balanced".

Power levels really aren't going to enable this unless you go out of your way to bring two armies with different power levels. The balance in power levels is loose, but not so loose that you're going to see two 50 pl armies where one side has a massive advantage over the other unless one person decides to take literally no wargear.

>The attacks were well timed and perfectly coordinated. The Fire caste, as professional soldiers whose lives revolved around military manoeuvre and warfare, could appreciate that their foes were also consummate warriors. Even though the Space Marines were launching themselves into a prepared trap, it was going to be a difficult battle.

So I am recently re-reading Kauyon and Mont'ka. I found something interesting. Tau fire warriors don't really fear the Space Marines. They admire the marines skills and courage. They consider them worthiest of foes and strive hard to beat them to prove the superiority of their warrior caste and creed.

On the otherside, humans warriors are terrified of the Space Marines even when they are fighting beside them. A term that popped up in the HH era is "Trans-human fear" describes the human reaction to fighting Space marines. Though they didn't expand a lot on it. Can anyone explain why humans are such cowards? I mean they don't fight for the thrill of battle and for the chance to attain honor by excelling in combat.

>>54228823
you would have something resembling an army if you didnt spend half your points on shitty characters.

Sicarius and the gravis captain are shit. one primaris lt (with the sword, always the sword) is good, but you dont need more than one. telion isnt bad, but his buff is very similar to the captain's yet much more limited.

i like scouts and hellblasters, but not the intercessors. at 20 points a pop i would much rather take more scouts instead. theres just too much multi-damage shooting that slaughters the intercessors, and being so vulnerable is a fatal flaw for a unit that is utterly ineffective at close combat and shooting further than 15" and has absolutely no mobility options.
>>
>>54228895
Forgot to add: if you use PL like the way I think it was intended to be used, like agreeing to play around 40-60 PL and building an interesting army that falls within that ballpark, you probably won't end up with exactly the same PL and one army will most likely be stronger than the other.
Maybe it's just me but I find games to be more interesting when one side is a clear underdog and has to rely on luck or skill to overcome the disadvantage. You don't have to win to have fun if your opponent is a decent mensch.
>>
>>54228928

Humans are conditioned to revere Space Marines. They are basically Angels come to life. Angels are awesome and terrifying to behold, especially when they have turned to demons and are now facing you down.

Meanwhile, Tau don't know jack and shit about Space Marines besides their analysis of their capabilities. They don't have the mystique or gravitas, they are simply bigger/faster/stronger humans. Basically human Crisis suits. Dangerous, but nothing to be afraid of more than any other elite warrior.

Humans see the humanity in space marines, elevated altered and perfected. Space marines are like them, only horribly twisted into machines built specifically to kill. Imagine seeing your neighbor tomorrow and he had suddenly turned into a 7 foot tall killing machine, mulching his garden with the corpses of heretics and xenos

Tau don't see that. To the Tau, space marines are just another alien threat. Maybe more effective of a fighter than your average human, but no diferent. Space marines would be borderline body horror. There are already humans that hate other humans for enjoying one set of genitalia rather than the other, or the color of their skin. Imagine the reaction from those kinds of people the first time someone uses drugs, robotics, and genetic manipulation to make themselves mythic ally powerful. There will be outrage, terror, and anger. We may live to see a "post human" evolution. We'all see how it goes when we get there.

>>
>>54229542
>But Sisters can spam out a lot of units, and bolter fire hurts en masse.

Yeah, that's always been a big thing for the Sisters. Basically no one else can bring as much BS 4 Power Armour to the table as the Sisters and what is kinda mediocre for marines gets scary pretty fast when you can put a lot more shots downrange.

The new 'Pick a unit, it gets a second firing phase' faith power for them also helps there for turning heavy bolters into infantry mulching machines.
>>
>>54229562
But it's not a roll of 1. You add 1 to the roll of one to get a roll of 2. No where in eighth does it mention UNMODIFIED rolls of one missing.
>>
>>54229547

Meganobz. Not sold on them this edition; hitting on 4's sucks hard for them, and you have to put them in a transport, which is bad because the new transport rules make taking high cost, multiwound models really risky in them. Their Battlewagon got blown to pieces on Turn 2 and 3 of the 5 died in the process. Granted that was poor luck but you really don't want valuable models inside a dying transport.

>>54229567

>The new 'Pick a unit, it gets a second firing phase' faith power for them also helps there for turning heavy bolters into infantry mulching machines.

Yeah tell me about it. Plus he had priests all over the place, and it turns out Sisters getting buffed by a priest have a fair few attacks to hit back with. Ghaz ate two squads by himself but then they just fell back and blasted him to bits. Exorcists are bloody insanely good, though it helped that he never rolled below 3 for the number of missiles he got on either one of them.

Lias Issodon never had an invuln save, he eschews force fields of any kind because they would diminish or even compromise his ability to be a sneaky motherfucker.

Honestly I like to deliberately put Issodon at the front of his own command squad, so as to let him ablate fire on his 0+ save in cover. It's frankly quite hilarious to see lascannons bounce off of him.
>>
>>54229584

>Flash Gitz

Yeah well bad news on that front too. Had 10 of them in a Battlewagon with 10 ammo runts.

The good: Ammo runts can tank models dying from the transport getting destroyed. Ap -2 heavy bolters hitting on 4's with 10 rerolls in the unit is pretty threatening to most things. The extra shooting 1 in 6 times is nice, but not something you should count on. I burned 2 CP trying to make it go off, only went off once in 5 rounds.

The bad: They have zero survivability. 24" is not a good range for a unit with a 6+ armour save. They pay for a Nob statline that you almost never will want to use, because you can't do much damage in close combat and the enemy will just fall back in their turn and blast you off the table.

The ugly: They 100% need a transport but that low range means the transport must move to get them into position. That means they're hitting on 5's thanks to Heavy weapons. Worse still, the Battlewagon they're in has to be Open Topped for them to shoot out of it, which means it stays T7. A T7 unit with a 4+ save is not long for this world against most armies.

Verdict: Buy for love of model only. I just finished my squad of 10 on Friday and they're going back into my display case until our Codex hits and hopefully makes them useable.
>>
>>54229580

The new wound tables and pistol rules rather help SOB melee. Since it takes T6 for them to get to 6+ to wound they can beat up a fair bit more semi-elite stuff and they get to make an attack with the BS 3+ and bolt pistol stats on their own turn.

They are not going to be winning any prizes for it still but they've gained a little on that front in 8e.

Probably the better option to be honest. Can be denied but if you're running Boyz (which you should be) your Weirdboy should be getting around +6 to their roll so good luck on that one. It might be a winner given how they FAQ 'Ere We Go; if it's reroll both dice on a failed charge, probably not worth it. If it's reroll either or both, then I think it's a go-er. But at the end of the day I just don't think a unit that expensive that hits on 4+ is a worthwhile investment.
>>
>>54229419
It could be worse. I know a guy who has hands so small, he can only carry about 12 dice at a time, and that's if he's using both hands at the same time.

Can units embarked in a vehicle that's currently locked in combat disembark in the movement phase? When they do, are they forced into combat, or can they simply disembark away from the combat?

Just use regular Nobz if you want an elite unit to back up the boyz.
Give them power stabbas and they're basically melee Flash Gitz that hit on 3s, have a better save, and cost significantly less per model.
They can also be kitted out for just about any job you want them to do. Give them all Big Choppas and they can punch down vehicles and monsters pretty easily.
Toss some kombi-skorchas in there and they'll be better at both shooting AND melee than Flash Gitz for around the same price.
>>
>>54229678
In relation to modifiers of BS and WS. That rule specifically means you can't get to a BS of 1+. Adding 1 to the dice roll isn't a modifier, it's not listed as a modifier, you are simply adding 1 to the side roll. It says so specifically in the profile. Rules for indexes and codexes that seem to contradict the core rules always take precedence, as special rules often change the way core rules work. If they didn't want the possibility of an auto hit, they would have used a modification to WS and not simply stated to add one to the roll.

>>
Haha fall back is such a fuck you to assault armies. They are so used to tying units up in combat they charge in, kill some meatbags, you pull out and blow your full load right in their face.
>>
>>54229790
That's why you either charge isolated units or charge en mass to prevent as many units as possible from firing when they fall back.
>>
>>54229661
>When they do, are they forced into combat, or can they simply disembark away from the combat?
They must disembark more than 1" from the enemy (meaning not locked in combat) and within 3" of the vehicle or they cannot disembark. If you can get some, but not all of your unit out under that condition, any models unable to fit are considered lost (probably brutally killed by the enemy as they try to disembark).

If the vehicle explodes, you deal damage to any units nearby, remove the vehicle, and then place the survivors from the unit. I believe they have to remain within 3" of where the vehicles was, but they now have more space because the vehicle broke apart around them.
>>
>>54229779
How is the wording vague? The disembarking rules say the models may disembark before the transport moves, and must be set up within 3" of the transport and more than 1" away from enemies. The transport being locked in combat does nothing to prevent this, but models cannot disembark within an inch of an enemy, so they cannot disembark and then get locked because of it.

It's hard, especially because we all know people in our hobby have a higher chance of being legit autistic, but you probably gotta just tell him you want to spend time with your friend learning the game. It might be best to take your friend aside and tell them it's annoying you, as it is probably annoying them as well (who the fuck wants a backseat player). If the store has any problem with that at all, you probably shouldn't be overly bothered playing elsewhere. The store benefits from YOUR business, YOUR money and the simple fact that YOU are there, showing other new players a 40K game in action. They need you more than you need them, and even if you have to take it to your dining room table, at least you won't have to deal with randos butting in on your game.

>>54229901
Nah nah, you got it wrong. The rule doesn't say you get a +1 modifier, it says you add 1 to the roll. All other bonuses are listed as "get a what ever modifier". This one specifically ISNT listed as a modifier. Therefore, the "before modifiers" portion of the "a die roll of 1 before any modifiers always fails" is null, so the whole rule is null. You still can't modify a roll to get a 1+ but karanak has a special rule that SPECIFICALLY adds one TO THE DICE that is NOT listed as a modifier. Why would they change the wording for that specific rule if it wasn't purposeful?
>>
>>54230041

>Slethial did not hesitate. As he reached the black-bone figure, he lashed out with his gauntlet, driving a deep wound in the warrior’s flank that cut through its armour like a razor cutting through flesh. It was deeply satisfying as the figure slumped to one knee but that was merely a sting – a debilitating move to slow the enemy down so Slethial could face it mask to eye as he delivered the killing blow. Not even pausing to relish the prowess of his art, Slethial came around the front of the figure and rammed both his hydra gauntlets into its chest. Eight deadly blades punched through the warrior’s back, every one piercing a major organ.

>‘My sister sends her regards,’ he spat, only for his expression to change dramatically a few seconds later. Rather than falling down in agony, the warrior actually got back on its feet. For the first time, Slethial saw its eyes and watched, fascinated and terrified, as they burned like pyres.

>It was not supposed to be like this. His enemy was meant to look upon his own agonised visage and despair, yet the apparition reached out for Slethial’s mask instead and tore it off.

>Slethial felt powerless, as if he had already fled his body and was watching events play out without the will or agency to influence them. He managed to tear a gauntlet free, noting the absence of blood on the blades, and raise his hand. Fingers clenched into a claw, Slethial gripped the edge of the black-bone warrior’s faceplate just as he felt his own neck seized by that same enemy’s armoured glove. Defiantly, he tore the faceplate away and what he saw there with his one remaining eye turned his blood to ice. What little colour was left in the succubus’s face drained away. It took his soul with it as Slethial was literally scared to death and knew at last the true meaning of fear.

The Herald of Piety, like all pilgrim vessels, was not capable of warp travel, and as it slowly wended its way towards Terra it would make infrequent stops at shrineworlds and other holy sites. It could take decades to make the journey from one planet to another and so many on board had never experienced the rapture and fervour of setting foot on the same ground the Emperor had once trod upon or beheld a relic that was once within his grasp. Being of the Sororitas order – a bride of the Emperor as some called her – Agentha was regarded as having a direct line to the Golden Throne and was therefore venerated by the pilgrims.

Doesn't matter if it works in melee or not. The problem is that BS5+ modified with -2 would need to roll a 7 To Hit, which you can't, so you auto-miss. However in melee, Orks have better WS stats of 4+, 3+ and even 2+, which are NOT guaranteed to miss just because of a -2 modifier.

And once you've slapped the Stealth Drones silly it's only -1 in any case.

how the fuck do i deal with that?

The Milky Way is roughly 100,000 lightyears across. If you were to travel at 8.3 BILLION times the speed of light, it would take you a ~100 day's journey to cross from one side of the galaxy to the other. Let's assume the Pilgrim vessels have to make half that distance.

Now the fastest ship by our standards today was designed under Project Orion, which is propelled by a coke-bottle like dispensor that drops NUCLEAR BOMBS behind a steel pusher plate. The fastest sped it could possibly reach also happens to be .33c, or 33% of the speed of light. Now for MATH.

> Light Years to Light Seconds
A single light year is exactly 9454254955488000 meters.
Let's assume that the ship needs to travel 50,000 lightyears, of HALFWAY across the milky way, traveling at 33% of the speed of light. This would give us a total distance of

472,712,747,774,400,000,000 meters.

And traveling at 33% of the speed of light, on a ship propelled by actual nuclear bombs. That gives us a journey time of

4730400000000 seconds, or 900,000 years.

It's not decades, it's 900,000 years to travel to terra at sub-luminal speeds. The writers are fucking niggeroids with no sense of scale.
>>
>>54230214
>Jesus Christ. Don't these idiots realize how long it will take to reach Terra without FTL and especially with all those stops.

More like GW doesn't take into account how vast space really is. Remember that canonically the Tau only get FTL travel in M41.999, and even that is not confirmed to be actual FTL. Even the densest star cluster around could not stand against an invasion force that has FTL travel, but the Tau manage to do exactly that with their forces, which really makes no sense. It means a single Tau planet fended off the entire Damocles Gulf crusade, not the Tau Empire, but a single planet.

This is actually entirely possible if the Tau took the whole high technology theme further and shoved a Dyson Sphere around every star in their empire and became a Kardashev 2 civilization. That way they really would have the population and industrial output to enable lone star systems to defeat entire Crusades. But GW doesn't really think about this. Which is a pity because that would probably be a far more compelling narrative for the Tau (slow expansion through the Eastern Fringe Dysoning every star they encounter, being a legitimate threat to the Imperium, vast numbers of off-world habitats housing Tau and their client populations in O'Neill Cylinders whilst they unleash energy beams capable of vaporizing entire planets) and cover the gaping plot holes in their current fluff.

The Soul Drinker novel series ends with them being revealed to be not of the geneseed of Dorn.
>>
>>54230318

>Tau didn't have FTL

Yeah according to that one moron writer who had a stick up his ass about non-warp FTL. Same guy who tried to retcon the inertialess drive away from Necrons.
>>
>>54230319
Yep, but they're still "officially" Soul Drinkers and if you were to use Imperial Fists Chapter Tactics (you know those're coming back), nobody could fault you for it.

Thanks mate.
At first I wanted to make camo green marines but they will not stand out enough against the death guard from the starter kit

seems pointless
no durability and a few shitty attacks
>>
>>54229520
There are a handful of abilities in the game that give enemies a -1 to hit (in melee or at range). A good example of this would be Belial and his Parrying Blade. Effectively the ability to get a +1 to hit rolls would help negate an effect like the Parrying Blade and let you hit normally. It's an extremely corner case situation, but I can only assume the intent is for situations like that.

Get Prospero box online for £76, sell Custodes, Sisters and the characters, get 30 tac for like £50, then apply FW shoulders, comes with 3 hammers, 3 power swords. 3 power firsts, 3 lightning claws, and 3 chainswords, and 3 plasma pistols, dont need the FW ones.

Perterabo would be displeased with your efficiency

Also sell the Tartaros terminators since they arent Cataphracts, save even more.
>>
>>54230578

Honestly they've overincentivised shooting units standing still this edition by taking out relentless and giving various stay still bonuses. It makes some builds really undynamic.

Hell an Exocrine goes from 12 BS3 shots to 6 BS5 shots.

I bought 4 Prospero boxes for 75% of retail when they first dropped.
Sold all the Custodes, characters and sisters 15 terminators and 50 tac marines to cover costs.
I ended up with 70 Tac marines many dice and some terrain tiles for 5 hours worth of packing and unpacking and ebaying.

probably, anything that doesn't walk or roll pretty much gets it.

the repulsar in particular has anti-grav shenanigans so there's no reason it can't hust decide to hover 20m above the ground. they just normally don't because they're slow as shit relatively speaking and would be sitting ducks up their.
