My reasons depend on the CYOA. For the ones with supernatural powers, I generally want to maximize my growth. Plus there's usually a ton of stuff to do in those settings and I want the option of sticking around forever to tackle it all.

For the CYOAs where you just get to tweak your current life, it's a little more complicated. I'm almost 30 and want to be able to properly enjoy all my changes. What I really want is de-aging + an opportunity to make a new life using the advantages I've selected. Many CYOAs don't offer that option, however, so immortality is the next best thing for getting mileage out of my choices.

And then there's always the possibility that I really, really enjoy the new me in any given CYOA, to the point that I'd want to live that life forever. As such, it feels short-sighted to not plan for that contingency by allowing myself the chance to extend that enjoyment indefinitely. Would you rather have 50 years of fun or 50000 years of fun?

As for Emissary "lore": Zanzabar is well-versed in warfare, and has corruptive traps. He's a perfect fit for guerrillas. The Legend is a veritable machine, and so perfect for the "hammer" of the army. And Grace gives the magical support, which is probably for the best given her placement right on top of a dragon.
Christoph will research new technologies and battle-magic for use in our wars -- he'll also patch up the wounded and dead. I need Damien's advice, so I need to give him some role; diplomat seems to suit him well. Owl Girl is my waifu. Alain and Marie...they are victims of war, just like all of us.

Famine is somewhat of an odd fellow, oft staring off in to space and having to be reminded of what he is doing by his advisors. In truth, he is sensing the state of his lands, to better shape and mold it for his people. He's a kindly fellow with an innate aura of peace and royalty, causing nearly all in his presence to acknowledge his status as a King. With his Silver Tongue, he has built up a cult around himself, though they don't necessarily practice a unified religion. It's more of a sense of duty to one's neighbors. Chief among these is the concept of giving to the lesser, or the hurt. Using his powers of siphoning, he takes life energy from those who have plenty and redistribute it to those whose life is in danger of being snuffed out too early. This concept of sharing extends to nearly all parts of his citizen's lives, as they are more willing to simply give things to those in need than to try to extract payment. This makes them easy to take advantage of in trade, but due to the excessive amounts of resources and the people's abilities to extract it, they are still prosperous.

Everyone in the Kingdom is encouraged to find what they are best at and to put forth all their effort in to it, and new innovations are handed out freely instead of hoarded jealously. An unfortunate side effort of their hard work ethic is the general lack of creativity in regards to recreational pursuits, leaving them behind in arts and culture even while they forge higher in industry.

The lands of Famine are diverse, with the borders of the kingdom being contained within great earthen pillars, each surrounded by thick forests wit heavy fog that rarely cross into another land. As one approaches the interior of the kingdom, the forests give way to sloping hills that grow into great mountains, with cities and villages hidden in their valleys. Some of the valleys are instead populated by creatures both strange and magical. In the absolute center of Famine stands a large spectral valley with the World Tree at its center, serving as a beacon of life to all who live near it. Near the north edge of the territory stands the lands' tallest mountain, flanked by two pillars that are only half of its height. At its southern base lays the capital city of Famine, a place of clockwork and magic intertwining into a grander whole.

The council of Famine may seem somewhat erratic, but each was chosen for a specific purpose. Damien, both able to take care of himself during diplomatic missions and use his soothing voice to reach deals. Solstice for her unique ability to freeze enemies who may try to harm the king. Owl Girl, whose pets allow her to know everything across the world. Sir Simon to build the status of his cult of personality, and Verea Amenta to shore up his lacking skill in management and diplomacy.

There's an odd profession in the lands, where people are paid handsomely for capturing strong and varied creatures from the spectral lands. These are kept hidden away from the populace until a seasonal festival approaches, where the King of Famine uses his Gaia Staff and Earth Magics to reshape the land to have several 'dungeons' with treasure at the end, guarded by these captured monsters. The first person to get the treasure has a great feast held in their honor, a total of seven feasts in all as he makes seven dungeons. These are considered holidays and all citizens across the land are expected not to work and to celebrate.

Wealth

A former ordinary guy who lucked out when a cold woman appeared out of no where and helped him in a fight. Explaining she saw talent in him, she prepared him for the ultimate Martial Arts tournament. He learned her technical fighting style and dabbled in her speed-based one, while developing his own relentless special attack that he hoped would cover his bases as a power-style attack. During the tournament, he was matched up with all women, a fact his teacher would not stop teasing him over.

The preliminary round he found himself already outmatched in style, though he managed to pull through the initial assault with willpower, using Cally's ear scratch weakness to distract her and then lay into her with his special attack. The second fight he was evenly matched with someone, so he broke out his incomplete Knight's Gambit style and managed to quickly beat Lisia into submission. The semifinal was against a lady he had a crush on since he had first arrived, and it was a long a grueling match where he was unquestionably at a disadvantage. Wanting to keep fighting, he used all the energy he could muster to finally beat her. Unfortunately, this caused him to collapse during the fight against Emily Endow, one that he at least would have reached a stalemate.

As his prize, not wanting to leave his mentor nor teach an artificial construction, he chose Wealth and planned to continue training so that he may participate another year.

Hmm, I've played all of these but Worlds Collide, and have posted decent length responses to SSEN, Fortune Cookies, and Horseman.

Your design tends towards modular cyoa elements. Start with a Ship/Kingdom/Main Choice, then little additions, rooms, people, skills.

I think you can strengthen your design further by focusing the bulk of your writing on what you consider a primary choice, then keep track of your limits on other choices.

I'd say SSEN has your best execution of this particuarly with decisionmaking.

Though your Demon Waifus/Companions. --Top notch.

Oddly enough, I don't really like point and skill stat distribution in a vacuum, but for some reason, yours are quite elegant.

In other words, Stardust is too complex for me, but your cyoas and writing are more my style. Space Refugee and Most Wanted are other good ones, though more expansive.

The entire kingdom is a desert with completely transparent, mineral rich sand, it looks as if you're standing on an Ocean, ruins that look to be underwater are just buried from centuries past, and the fauna's roots tangle themselves in beautiful patterns underneath the streets.

Spectral Lands
Sand is transparent like tropical waters, fauna roots glow in the moonlight, Giant sand snakes and Fire salamanders swim beneath the ground, large game roam the forests with deep colored fur, Technicolor fish swim the lakes.

Stormy Lakes
Blend seamlessly into the surrounding sands, at any time an army could drop off a sandbank into deep waters, their plate armor bringing them to the depths as they look up upon the crimson lightning.

Thick Forests
The Oases and Mainland are dense magical forests teeming with fruits the size of men, and game even larger. An Emerald Elk as tall as the tallest trees roams the mainland, deeper than even the population has explored.

The Kingdom is simply laid out. A 35 day journey by camel from the beginnings of the Mirage Sea to the fan-shaped mainland on all sides. Small portions of forested land settled by traders and noblemen are dotted along the place, never closer than 15 days journey. The mainland is an enormous forest who's only accessible entrance is the most southern tip, The Capital city of Mercy. Mercy itself is only 50m^2, but the forest is being worked on to uncover the rest of the ancient city. Surrounding the southern tip of the fan is a large lake roughly 30m^2. There are also small deep lakes dotting the desert.

Mining is very easy when you can see the veins of rock from above ground, and we are proficient at mining safely in large quantities.

Most houses were already built long before The Lord Healer settled this place, others were carved out of giant plants. Bust as we clear forest there are fantastic masons building clean housing that flows together with its surroundings. Tailors use the highest quality furs and leathers around to craft exquisite armors and clothing unique to the kingdom.

Engineering 1-3 3
Hand in hand with architecture, technology is booming with new metal machinery aiding in supporting buildings and farms, to plumbing, sewage and electricity! Sand boats are crafted to allow civilians to cross the desert and lakes to other Cities, and war ships allow a covered front in the time of battle.

Hard working 1-2 2
Agriculture is a way of life here, everyone works for themselves and the city. with most of the currency coming through the sale of goods at bazaars. It is common for multiple families to own one stall. There is never a dip in the economy. Some people buy sand boats and offer to take tourists and travelers to Mercy for large fees.

This is a great example of a cyoa with a layout that looks cool but that is still very poorly designed.
