Honestly when it comes down to it, it's important to play something that fits in with the group and is fun for everyone (or at least doesn't ruin other people's fun)
I enjoy playing a healslut, but that very much requires not being a deadweight in both roll and roleplay, if the group needs something more or doesn't want to play off the character type, it's not going to be fun for anyone, likewise if a jaded asshole doesn't click with the group, you're going to have problems, if there's a problem with how a character is played, talk it out with your group, and try to play something that's enjoyable for everyone, I don't really get why some people have trouble understanding that

I almost always play healers, and if healers don't exist in the setting then I play a conventional doctor.

For me it's the opposite of being smug or whatever. I like to be a team player and see my friends do well. Casting Guidance and Bless on an ally and seeing them go ham on the bad guys is a good feeling, and we win as a group. The saying "people working together is greater than the sum of it's parts" is completely true in theory and in my experience.

Plus it's a good feeling to make others feel safe. They can roll to jump straight at the dragon or whatever because they know they have someone with a "I did something dumb, help me" spell ready for them. This leads to people doing awesome things. Which is good for the game overall.

I like to think being sexually completely submissive is a coincidence since I don't mix gaming and sexuality (unless it's agreed upon by the group beforehand) but the meme does exist for a reason I guess.

More seriously, a healer's job is basically to maintain an awareness of how everyone on their side is doing, and also remain aware of the state of whatever you're in conflict of in a constant game of triage. If a healer has work, it is because someone has already fucked up enough to need healing. So basically, as a healer you're A) keeping track of everything that's going on, and B) paying particular attention to who is in the most danger, either from existing damage or the threat of imminent damage. Your role is basically constantly paying attention to 'who is in the worst situation and how do I save their poor ass.'

Because a healer's job is thankless. You don't get big cool offense. Your job is to keep the cool guys alive. Thing is, the cool guys often get their egos a bit inflated over punching out dragons, because their reward is more tangible than the healer's (the party is alive). So healers often get frustrated because their contributions are often marginalised despite being crucial, which leads to shit like "nah, dude, I'm not healing you, because you're being a dick".

I'm just not good with defense characters, snipers, and flankers, so I focus on frontline, tanks and supports.

Imagine being every bit a fighter as the fighter (warhammer + shield + plate) but also being able to cast as many spells as a Wizard whenever you want with no arcane spell failure chance for like five minutes of easily handwaved prayer a day.
