Privateer all the way.
>>
>>54073781
A friend once tried to run a campaign where we played privateers with letters of marque from andoran, but the game fell apart mostly because pathfinder's naval combat rules are a trainwreck.

Piffle! We love FREEDOM and were happy to liberate slaver ships throughout the inner sea.
>>
>>54074018

You can still capture slaver ships!
>>
I made a Sylph for an Inner Seas campaign, with the idea that he was born near the Eye of Abendego. He was probably born to and raised by pirates. So, what would life be like near the Sodden Lands, the Shackles, or pirating on the southern seas?
>>
>>54074047
As Chelaxians. You probably couldn't because they're pretty pro slaver.
>>
I made an archetype for a class that was just released into playtest a few days ago.

There is no room for competition! All other slavers must go!
>>
So aside from everything DSP produces, what are the official /pfg/ approved 3pp classes?
>>
>>54074073
They'll raid the slavers and then sell the slaves again.
>>
>>54074129
Not official, but been looking at the Spheres of Power system from Drop Dead Studios. It's an alternative system of magic that eschews vancian casting in favor of basic at-will abilities that can be augmented by using finite spell points. It features unique classes, and can be adapted to other classes via archetypes as well. Design seems, on the face of it, pretty sound. A PoW and SoP party would probably be fucking badass.

I'm the ship's resident spellcaster. Recently we found a colony town out in the middle of fuck all nowhere. We burnt it to the ground, killed the men, and took the women.

Well, we killed most of the women, took a few. My job is to make sure they're compliant. The job of an enchanter is never done.
>>
>>54074465
Would you say it was an amazing chest?
>>
To other players, do you keep notes (IC or otherwise) from previous sessions?

In previous years I did so, but I lost my zeal for such embellishments as time went on. The uptick in biweekly things and people apping leads me to believe there is some kind of trick people use to stay hype.

Wrath of the Righteous only allows ONE male application.

>>
>>54074909
None of them are any good, I'm still waiting for a real competitor to show up.
>>
>>54074902
I wouldn't be upset if I didn't make it into Ensoulment but honestly it just seems like a lot of trouble to make a guest appearance. It's probably more than just showing up and roleplaying, I'd think you'd need to update your sheet to where ever the DM needs it and discuss with him a lot the kind of plot he's using your character for for the day.
>>
>>54074954

>>
>>54074957
I always assumed the guest star slots would just be for pure RP in the court itself.
>>
So recently I had one of my fellow party members killed. I did not do so directly, but I realized that him staying alive would fuck me over in the long run. I talked with the GM about it and hired an assassin through a false identity, the assassin then dumping the body to ensure resurrection was difficult to impossible. Out of character the player does not know his fight with the strange assassin and death was payed for by me.

Am I a monster?

Ehh, my opinion is that players should hash out conflicts themselves unless something is agreed to beforehand, since losing a character is a pretty big deal. The potential for drama and nofun is just too high, as is the potential for bias from the GM.

I'd probably squash the entire idea if I was running the game. I don't mind a little meta to keep things running smoothly.

So why are players so fucking desperate to throw themselves at the closest strong enemy and die immediately even when an enemy gives them the chance to leave. At this point I test new players by seeing if they're willing to back down when given the chance. If not I try and just fucking end the campaign quickly and move on to a better set, or just kick the players if they react badly enough.

No, a charge assumes you're on mostly even ground the entire time and that there're no obstacles. You can technically make a single attack during a jump with acrobatics but the rules for jumping are bad so it's non-viable for virtually everybody.

Video games maybe. Seriously. A lot of people are used to games where the enemies are always appropriate or, when the enemy really is too strong, narrative ploys and not an actual defeat. I've had players get mad at me for things 'too strong for us' existing in the world.

In my current game half the party died in the first few minutes because the initial setup was clearly foreshadowed as being deadly. They tried to fight it anyway. The half that lived only did so through luck and run checks. The players that died all quit.

As a player ive had it happen a few times that we knew an enemy would be very tough but engaged it with a good plan, then when we got a grasp for its numbers i realized it was stronger than i anticipated and begin initiating an escape plan...

Only to have the DM freak out over how we shouldnt be PCs if we are afraid of dangerous foes, and clearly imply we are supposed to fight this guy. (Often followed by something unpredictably advantagous happening for us)

It is can get very confusing.

>muh video games are the sorce of my bad play habbits
RPGs inspired vidya, not the other way around.

Players don't run because 3.PF does not allow for easy disengagement from combat unless your a caster than can just nope out of the situation. Anything that could force a group to retreat can probably run them down too. You'd just be killed fleeing with your tail between your legs. If they don't pursue it's no different then dem ebil vidya games having a scripted cutscene where the big unbeatable monster is conveniently stopped from killing you.

>>
>>54075615
3.pf also has crazy huge power differences with very little show. If I know our enemy is a powerful wizard, I dont know if he can cast level 5 or level 9 spells until I start fighting him. If I see a big red monster covered in spikes, I dont know if its a cr 6 demon or a cr 20 one unless the DM names it and ive seen the MM entry. The champion duelist of a nation might be level 10 or 20, and it is extremely hard to know which without a ton of context dispite one being a tough fight for our level 4 party and one being absolute suicide. Are his 4 guards level 3 warriors or level 6 fighters? Who knows?
>>
>>54075770
This is why players need more ways of being able to see a thing's stats like HP or AC.
>>
>>54071391
Doesnt sound terrible at all aside from "marks for elimination". If you mean that in a 'discredited' sense then its probably fine, but if you mean it in a 'power word intrigue' sense its just adding danger to a already wierd character, which is a losing combination.
PWI was a meme joke, she didn't literally off anyone. None of the applicants, at least.

>>54071447
>all the other philosophers
I'm not being ironic but where ARE all the other philosophers? As far as I can see, CCC is more or less the only one who actually is a straight up philosopher; everyone else you might be comparing her to is heroic, or strong-willed, but none of them write books only tryhards or nobles with too much spare time read and none of them have ranks in Kn - Philosophy. Or Kn - GS, for that matter.

>>54074957
Short of Protag personally telling us what he means, it could honestly be anything from "they tag along with you for a quest they have vested interests in" to "they're now in the Court, if you want to talk to them you might be able to!" to "they're now an arc antagonist or even a / the BBEG", depending on what the GM - and what the player - is willing to put up with.

>>54075615
To be fair, there is the circumstance of "you shall not pass", where these guys usually have no vested interest in killing you as long as you actually run away with your tail between your legs. Repeat offenders, obviously, have a lot less leniency here.

>>54075770
A lot of monsters, and a lot of descriptions for them, are very clearly bad fucking news though. As for the champion, well, realistically you WOULDN'T know; Bruce Lee just looks like some Chinese guy, not someone who can drop a person permanently by smacking them.

>>
>>54075844
I honestly wouldnt have a problem with this. In a realistic game you can look at someone and from their gear and build immediately have a very good idea of how big a threat they are just from the DMs description. But in a game like dnd/pf descriptions tell you nothing.

If the party corners the evil seductress manipulating the king after a session of intrigue in a realistic game, and she pulls out a knife with a fearless look I think "ok, she is just a lithe woman in a dress with a knife, we are four men with combat experience in armor. Even she is a secret agent extremely trained and talented in hand to hand cambat the worst fear I have is that shell shank the shit out of one or two of us before we are forced to give up restraining her and kill her in self defense."

In dnd im thinking "oh fuck she has player class levels, not just an aristocrat. How many? What kind? Does she have spells? Is that dagger magic? Can we kill her before she escapes?"
>>
>>54076028
Alternately, you can go fuck yourself you dog-molesting neckbeards motherfucker
>>
>>54075905
Knowledge checks could also be "the champion of X kingdom was known to have defeated a fully grown White Dragon in a hard-fought duel" or "this wizard is known for investigating a new method to cast Greater Teleport which can specify its destination items or people instead of locations", though, which immediately tells you that the first champion is a CR 10+ threat, while the second is at least level 13, allowing him to cast 7th level spells, and probably 14 or higher, because he's doing original research on a 7th level variant.

>>54075994
No I mean, well, most of them have something tied to them (Takashi had ranks in Basketball last I checked), but no one is a straight up philosopher whether in flavor or in skills.

>>54076028
I don't see how it doesn't make sense. If I were a Wizard why the hell wouldn't I try to nab a 100% profit margin by selling to adventurers who forgot or aren't willing to take CWI?

>>54076052
In a realistic game you -don't- have an idea of how big a threat they are. Again, Bruce Lee looks like some in-shape Chinese guy (I've heard him called Korean too), but he's a lot stronger than most of the huge football chads or dudes with baseball bats.

Wand shops make sense, as do scrolls and potions for stuff under 1k go. What doesn't make sense is being able to pop in and find a highly expensive and specific magic item at the drop of a hat. People would never keep around something costing 50,000gp in a store's inventory. Nobody buys it often enough and it's too risky for theft.

>>54076097

Anything costing 50k GP is something only high level Wizards can make, and for high level Wizards their shop is probably the equivalent of a Wizard Tower - all but inpenetrable if they don't want you there. And if worst comes to worst - then what, just commision a Wizard to make that +6 Perfection belt for you.

I think the idea is that an 'applied' philosopher has more things going on and more potential to be an active character. Real philosophers didn't moonlight as adventurers.

realistically the game is balanced around the players having certain items they NEED, like belts and magic swords, so i'm fine with McMagic item mart.

I understand where you are coming from with the bruce lee thing, but the scale is still rediculously different. You cant see how skilled a person is, sure, but in reality skill means a lot less than it does in dnd. Bruce Lee could take 4 thugs who were way bigger than him in a fight I bet, but he couldnt take 4 people with some actual training (no where near as much, but still some), body armor, and 60pds on him each. I mean, MAYBE he could, but itd be a hell of a fight. But if those guys were level 3 fighters and he was a level 20 monk, he could kill hundreds of them then run away to do it again later.

In the scenario I described with the lady with a knife, if the game is realistic she stands little chance even if she was secretly one of the best fighters alive. In dnd, she might have 10 levels on us and we are about to get humiliated before she walks out laughing and saying shell be back when we are higher level.

Having magic marts, but makin economics, guilds, and political landscapes reshapesd to accomodate their existance, with Mage Guilds constantly trying to control nations and markets with their supply of magical items, all manner of corporate espionage, anonymous thugs hired to raid supplies or perform implications and such, and whole nations being at the whims of the military, magical, and economic power behind whichever gilds the decide to host and hire.

The existance of magic items, and the act that they can be made somewhat easily by people means that any proper fantasy setting with such things should look no different from a cyberpunk. Basically, the natural progression from "magic items exist and can be made" should always be shdowrun

Or view it like this:

Over 10,000 years of civilization with varying levels of advancement filled with thousands if not millions of high level casters across the ages will leave a bunch of magic items lying here and there and somebody is going to find them. Of course your average yokel who digs up a flametongue isn't going to know the full value of the pretty sword, so he'll sell it to some oddball merchant for a few hundred golds, a lifetime supply for him, and the merchant realizes that shit's fucking magic, yo, and sells it to an adventurer. The adventurer grows bored with the weapon or dies, somebody finds it and boom, new high level magic item right back in the market.

fair, but this discussion started with the discussion about players always assuming every enemy is beatable / preemptively assuming an enemy is unbeatable. When you rely on the DM to indicate when you should and shouldnt fight you inevitably get misunderstanings one way or the other. And creates an awkward "red light green light" game that is unfun and destroys immursion.

This way of thinking once again ties into the first post in this discussion, where the party assumes every possibly enemy is somethinf they are supposed to just fight till they win or the DM cutscenes it.

Well, what class are you? If you're a Sylvan Sorcerer, you can get away with a robe of arcane heritage, or that one trait that increases your level 1 bloodline ability by 1. I believe there's also a feat for it, called Magical Enigma, that makes you count as one level higher for the purposes of your bloodline abilities.

the problem, of course, is that no other class really has these ways of amping up their pets.

Who's ready for some tales of Bling and the making thereof!

The Cast:
Kyras Czarny, LN Cavalier – The feared Abyss Knight! A rude dude hellbent on taking what he wants, and sowing terror into the heart of his enemies. At least, that’s what he wants you to believe. Has an adorable golden tail, likes decorating his hair with flowers, and knows a lovely recipe for honeyed bread!
Viviana D’Apparan, NG Mystic – An ex-thief on the run from justice, and her past. Soft spoken, aloof, and gifted with keen insight, she’s doing her best to keep the peace and cool raging tempers. Despite appearances, she’s got a mean streak a mile wide when provoked.
Andrik Kaminski, LG Warder – A simple farm boy, turned wandering Knight of the Realm and war--wanderer. A rock for the rest of the party to lean on, or occasionally hurl insults at. Cares deeply for his companions, perhaps a little too deeply. Also has a neato golden arm!
Branwen Gwas Ddraig Du, NE Witch – The servant of a powerful green dragon, now unleashed to sate her greed upon an unsuspecting world. Shares the title of resident snarker with Antoinette, constantly spouting caustic epithets, usually responsible for the party’s problems. Only opens up to Franze and Kyras, but is actually a sweet, if rather selfish, kid. Has a neat hat, that keeps her alive! Probably.
Franze Voigt, LE Gunslinger – A straight-laced cop from Port Ice, banished to the Greenbelt after kicking the proverbial hornet’s nest. Actually a sweetheart, providing advice, insight, a shoulder to lean on, and tea to any who ask for it. Despite her warnings to the contrary, ended up touching one of the nodules, and now has a golden arm just like Andrik. Bodyguard for…
>>
>>54078021
Played a kasatha dune drifter in the style of the main character of Stranger's Wrath, with large sleeves for both arms on each side and a large hat and bandana to cover the misshapen skull and mouth. Course, the DM just made kasatha common and open, which both made my character seem backwards and kinda killed my drive to play. This was immediately after he made the hard decision to reveal his identity to the sheriff, too, which just made that moment completely pointless. The game died pretty much right after that session, so I avoided the worst of that, but I haven't wanted to play a kasatha since until Starfinder brought it back up.
>>
>>54078265
Antoinette Hearthsley, NE Wizard – A waifish wizard, exiled from her homeland, and now trying to make a name in the River Kingdoms. Constantly trades barbs with Branwen, possibly in a relationship with Franze. Hasn’t been around much, seems to be more interested in sleeping, raising undead, and spending alone time with Franze rather than chatting. Managed to drop a lump of gold down her shirt while examining it, and now has a golden corset. Currently on the shitlists of both Andrik and Viviana for her stance on raising sentients as undead.

Session 8 – In which our heroes do very little (but that’s okay!)

>Following the morning’s unpleasantness, the remainder of the day passes in silence. Everyone seems to have something to think on
>It’s late evening when they encounter a small knot in a tree, with light and music issuing from it.
>They collectively decide it must be some sort of Fey creature, and leave an offering of honey and bread, before passing on.
>the party is greeted at the trading post by Kesten. While the rest of the party goes to put up their horses and discuss dinner plans, Viviana catches up on the goings on around the trading post.
>A whole lot of nothing. Other than an Abadaran fellow named Jhod, who set out in search of someone. Who, or why, remains a mystery.
>The group spends the evening trying to cook; with Kyras making some delicious honeyed bread, while Andrik manage to make a… something. It oozes.
>The group sets out the next morning, after deciding their route, and comes across a lone hut in the distance.
>They approach, to find an old man sitting behind a small table, and grinning from ear to ear.
>>
>>54078250
Excellent. That is the best outcome!

>>54078269

>It’s Bokken, their resident crazy old hermit! And he needs them to go fetch berries for his potions!
>SideQuestAccquired.7z

>Antoinette is naturally curious, while the rest of the group is much more cautious.
>After examining it a bit more, they determine the “tree” is actually the body of a slain Dryad.
>Cause of death, and time since then, are uncertain.
>The next day, the group leaves behind the grassy plains, and enters an area shrouded in light mist, and dotted with barrows.
>Despite the creepiness of their surroundings, the journey to the berry patch is uneventful, and they arrive near dusk.
>A brief survey shows that there’s a storm brewing, so Andrik and Kyras crack open the stone seal on one of the mounds, hoping for a bit of shelter inside. While Branwen and Franze go to investigate the berry patch…
>ROLL INITIATIVE
To be Continued…
>>
>>54078305
>To be Continued…
Right now!

Session 9 – Of Spiders and Spirits
>The berry patch is swarming with spiders, and the pair berryly escape in time to not be swarmed.
>However this leaves the group with a conundrum. They need to kill the spiders, without harming the bushes…
>This looks like a job for a crime against both men and god!
>The skeletal badger lures the spiders out, while the group wipes them out with torch, spell, and buckshot.
>Franze gets poisoned, and Branwen got bit plenty, but the group is otherwise unharmed, and harvests the berries without issue.
>The barrow is cramped, but dry, and the rest of the night passes uneventfully.
>The group awakes to heavy rain and the crack of distant thunder. Looks like they’ll be riding in the rain. Joy.
>By afternoon, they come to what was once a tiny stream, swollen by the downpour. A nearby sign reads “Nettles’ Crossing, 5 CP” with a small bell attached, and a burned-out house sits on the other side of the river.
>Kyras rings the bell.
>Nothing happens.
>Until a figure, with rotting grey flesh, dripping wet, rises from the river. A putrid odor passes over the group, leaving Viviana, Antoinette, and Branwen choking on the fumes.
>The figure doesn’t immediately attack. Instead, it calls for the Staglord.
>Feeling a sense of kinship with the wretched creature, Antoinette converses with it. Gleaning that the creature was once Nettles, until the Staglord’s men killed him. Now, it can’t rest until it sees the Staglord’s body with its own eyes.
>SeemsLegit.asi
>The contract is sealed, the creature melts back into the river, and makes a path for them to ride their horses across!
>The house is utterly ransacked, providing little shelter, thus the group decides to ride on, before camping for the night.

Favorite things from Adventurer's Armory:
>MOTHERFUCKIN' POPPETS, these little fucks are amazing and the Construct book in November better have the amount of pure hype and quality that those two pages did
>Waveblade, a monk 18-20 weapon is magnifique, and I'm already planning a monk around it
>Orc Hornbow, just for ushering in a new era of swole half-orc bow-waifus
>Lantern Staff is my favorite meme weapon
>Spider Silk Bodysuit, even though literally nobody will ever actually be able to use it properly because "lmao drow"
>The clothing is all pretty cool, but the Sparring Outfit takes #1 on account of being kinda useful for monks, even though DR against nonlethal will rarely come up
>The pointless fluff items are a nice touch

The bad, though?
>Weapon and armor "upgrades" are a terrible meme, require FEATS FEATS FEATS and/or janky bullshit to be worth it
>Alchemical Weapon Bolts are filled with shit like Liquid Ice and Alchemist's Fire, but "are not splash weapons" and likely do not count as them, meaning they don't benefit from an Alchemist's Throw Anything on top of being obscenely expensive, eliminating their one potential chance of ever seeing serious use

By playing 5e.

Serious answer: It's not a good idea in general. It means you're feat intensive for having to invest in shield feats and two weapon fighting, and it's expensive because you have to spend your money to upgrade both your weapon and your shield.

The most optimal way is probably to use a Halberd and take Shield Brace to keep your two handed damage instead of investing in TWF.

Take a trait to get linguistics in Class. If you're human, you can spend a pair of feats to get Skill Focus (Linguistics) and Orator, which'll let you cover basically all the face skills with linguistics.

then when you eventually pick up a tumor familiar (and you will, you dirty minmaxer) you can make it a parrot so that it can talk, has a flight speed, and gives you a +3 bonus to linguistics once again.

Also conveniently, linguistics covers forgery.
>>
>>54079190
Djezet is probably more form fitting though given that it magically contours
It's probably a lot less soft though.

>Djezet skin acts as a suit of +1 leather, except it is made of metal (and thus druids cannot wear it) and has no armor check penalty and a 0% chance of arcane spell failure.

Having no ASF is the whole point, ya dingus. Well, maybe not the WHOLE point... But a pretty big perk.

>>54079190

>>54079239
Djezet is also a liquid metal, it's basically magical mercury, which means armor made out of it is automatically 30% cooler.

Honestly, I have very little idea of where I was going to take the character in the long run. The DM also didn't know where he was taking the game either, so I'm not sore about it. I've played many other characters since that I think I've enjoyed more, but I may still busted out one for a TWF butchering axe barbarian should the game seem murderhobo-ey enough. Currently more jazzed for bug dads and big brains for Starfinder.

Me and my group are having a bit of a discussion over the handy haversack. Not much of a discussion, but like, two groups saying different things and none of us having a real answer.

Three of us (including me) read the handy haversack as a regular bagpack that doesn't weigh you down, with two mini-bag-of-holding-like pouches that have an extradimensional space, and the contents shift around magically to have what you need on top of everything else.

The other three state that both the pouches AND the main backpack have extradimensional spaces, like with a bag of holding, and that the object you want is always in reach because of this.

The descriptions are a little odd and we can't pin it down. Care to help us out?
>>
>>54079346
All three are extradimensional spaces.
>>
>>54079346
All three are "bag of holding-like", but the two side pouches have different properties than the main bag.

>>
>>54079433
No, I just thought the main backpack part functioned by not weighing you down but without an extradimensional space. That sounds way cooler for me, but I guess I was wrong.
>>
Was Elsbeth the original high profile character?
>>
>>54079433
I thought Handy Haversacks were just magically enlarged on the inside. A warping of space rather than extradimensional.
>>
>>54079483
Thats the same thing really.
>>
>>54079433
Actually I kind of would since it's still attached by the portal. Like if you hang a sack with things in it outside the window, their weight is somewhere else but it's still connected. If it weren't connected you wouldn't be able to get your things back, they'd have just fallen/drifted out into the outside space. I'm still holding the mouth of a sack, the sack is someplace else, and the things in it should add to the weight of the sack and still exert their force on the little edge I hold it by.
>>
For an Overrun/Bull Rush build, which class would work best?
>>
>>54079483
you'd think so, but the rules on extradimensional spaces specifically call Handy Haversacks out.

>>54079496

Hey, everyone, have a question for you all. My group's gonna be playing Wrath of the Righteous here soon, and I just wanted to know, how much Mass Combat is in the adventure path? The GM's said that it'll be in the second book at least, but I'm just wondering how long I'll need to put ranks into my character's profession (soldier) to keep us alive as he's OOC being selected as the future commander.
>>
>>54079513
Fighter, 100%. Siegebreaker especially.
>>
>>54079495
It's not, actually. In an AMF a warping of space will expel all its contained items, and if it's pierced the items just spill out. An extradimensional space becomes completely inaccessible, and if it's pierced all the items become lost to the Astral Plane.
>>
>>54079537
Pun-Pun and Henderson are ancient legends though. Elsbeth's player still posts here
>>
>>54079575
The main reason Elsbeth stuck around is that the player is also an artist who doesn't shy away from drawing her assets in full detail. Also she has fat half-elf tats, which are memorable.
