I've hit a wall. I just picked up a box of Sanguinary Guard now that they are not shit in 8th. But I want to paint these guys to be the glorious golden angels they are.

Watched Painting Buddah's tutorial on Stormcast Eternal on how he did the gold... and it's all non-metallic, just browns and yellows.

I don't know, I want to try out this style because it looks gorgeous but I have never tried to paint gold without non-metallic paints before. I'm scared.

Rustoleum white plastic primer works fine. Takes longer to dry than the GW or Army Painter stuff but the end result is adequate. Don't use spray primers or spray sealers outside when the humidity is 50% or higher, the humidity will fuck it up. Do it inside.

from the GW painting guide.
I'd use the formula with the aptly named Kantor blue, if I was using GW paints.

I'd like to use the opportunity to shill Vallejo colors though, since they got a lot of great colors.
The VGC range is based on the old GW range.
If I could remember which issue it was in I'd dig up the old painting guide from the four generals article series, where one of the guys did Crimson Fists. I really liked his paintjobs.
So I'd tell you to steal his recipe and use Vallejo equivalencies.
The VMC range has a lot of cool colors as well, wouldn't be suprised if you find some great blues in there. Prussians and Napoleonic soldiers came in a variety of blue too, so...

If the blue in here isn't dark enough for your taste just wash it black.

If you try to do the red from the picture 1:1 I think you may end up with a scheme that lacks a bit of contrast. It works well in the cover because the fire and smoke surrounding the marines frames them, without that a mass of minis painted so dark may just look like a dark horde of unidentifiable mooks.

PS.: Make sure to do a Captain Cortez, he is the best Space Marine to ever Space Marine.
>>
>>54062446
Move the camera about six inches further from the mini. It focused on the seekers just fine so we know the camera isn't terrible.
>>
>>54062389
Probably cleaner to just paint over it.
Stripping only really becomes necessary if you painted over it a handful of times already. Especially since a sword usually is just a flat space.
Unless there is some engraving or whatever you are not even losing detail.

You can also use some fine grit sandpaper on it, if it's a regular old 'pointy finger' pose.

I live in a Dorm so I cant use spray primer inside. The humidity outside is 70%+ on average.

Am I screwed?
>>
>>54062615
You could ghetto rig a spray booth.
Or just put your stuff inside a box and lay some newspapers around it.
It's gonna stink your place up though, so not something I'd do before going to sleep or if you're planning to spend the rest of the day in your room.

Just saying you can absolutely do it.

In any case you should try it on a piece of sprue or scrap first, just to be sure the paint comes out nice.
You can try outside an a day that feels less humid and see what happens.
>>
>>54062528

I don't think painting over it will work. I used dark steel metallic paint and applied a couple coats, then I realized it would look nicer if it had a light red glaze since it is on a fire giant. Sandpaper should work though.

>>54062615

If you're a collegefag, take your primer and pieces to the art building and find a studio. Spray in there. Before you start, give it a little test spray away from figures to make sure you don't accidentally "frost" them because that can happen when you start spraying.

In that case check out HF. They have a nice bunch of Space Pirates.
Two of them are modeled after Jes Godwin and John Blanche themselves.
Reaper's Chronoscape range has a bunch of of minis that fit the bill, as well as quite a wide selections of good oldfashioned pirates.
If you are willing to consider regular pirates as conversion fodder you should also check out Black Scorpion and Freebooter's Fate.
Rogue Stars also has several minis in their range you could use without and conversion work whatsoever (the name is kind of a sly giveaway).

For other dudes in coats from the GW range, if you are dead set on converting something I'd check out the chaos cultist with the commissar's coat, the regular commissars, the old cadian commander that came with the command squad, the fleet advisor, Creed and the WHFB witchhunter if they still sell it.

The rest you have to fill in with your imagination I guess, cause then you could do just about anything I guess.

I'm new to this painting stuff but I'm in Guam and it is always above 50% humidity. I wait for it to be kinda dry outside, with wind. I spray from as far away as I can stretch my arms (manlet so not very far) and use the wind to carry little primer particulates to my models. I do it right on the porch and IMMEDIATELY put them back inside the kitchen after super thin coat. I sometimes let the models stay splotchy half primed half grey and then wait til its dry to do a second coat. I've only had like 2 or 3 things turn out with that lumpy fucked up primer coat you get from the humidity.
But like I said, I'm new and haven't seen a mini in person in over 10 years so dunno if I'm doing it right. I like my dudes tho

I've been looking up Crimson Fists guides, but what's the difference between Kantor Blue and Dark Prussian Blue from Vallejo? I've also heard that you should use Temple Guard Blue to hihlight them? I don't know much about painting, but I rather do like the Crimson Fists.
>>
>>54062138
NMM canm be fun on a show piece, but you'll want to kill yourself if you try to do it on an entire squad.
>>
>>54064075
I wasn't referring to any Vallejo color in particular, just meant to say that they have lots of blues. Didn't even know there is one actually called Prussian Blue.

There is no one right way to paint anything.
I just posted the GW recipes for reference.
It's a good point to start I thought, I didn't mean to confuse you.
>>
>>54064126
Yeah, they have one called Dark Prussian Blue. I suppose you're correct about that, I'm just wondering what the differences between the two would look like on a model. I've heard Temple Guard Blue should be used to highligjt them since it has a green tone/influence to it, which goes with Kantor/Prussian Blue apparently?

What do people use to get neat curvy lined camo like pic related? Using an airbrush i've tried repeatedly with blutac but i always inevitably end up with fuzzy lines in places, and worst of all the blutac tends to rip off bits of paint when it comes off.
Doing some fw russes so there's quite a few recesses to get into.
>>
>>54064950
If you can do the majority of the work with an airbrush you just need a big brush to neaten up the edges quickly.

>>54064985
Painting things on gives you a different shade than an airbrush though.
>>
>>54065072
I guess that is fair. But you can do more than one coat with an airbrush, that shouldn't be a big issue I think.

If you check the Duncan videos I think he did it entirely with a brush.
Big brush can be pretty quick too.

I dunno, I always thought for this particular kind of patterns the soft transitions work well.
I recently stumbled over a pretty nice WIP thread on B&C, where somebody used a sponge instead. Doesn't look bad either.
Here's a link
http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269375-wip-thread-711th-ccab-chocochip-rats/

Depends on what you are going for.

Another option may be to just paint a black or brown line over the transition and make a minor adjustment to the camo pattern that way.

Or switch from blutac to masking tape. That should get you cleaner lines too I think.
>>
>>54064102
I'm aware of how difficult it will be. I'm in a weird mindset right now where I find newer and better ways to paint minis, which only end up taking more time to do. I then can't go back to the faster way of doing this because I get hung up on the fact that I am not making my guys look to the best of my ability.

It's silly but I really want to pour out all my skill into my stuff, even if it's on something as minor as a scout because it feels like if I am not pushing my limits I will not improve at all.

How does GW's Purity Seal Spray hold up?

I've seen a video of a guy that has been in the hobby for over ten years, claiming it to be great. I also read a bunch of stuff about it being not so great, (the usual suspects, frosting etc.)
but I know that a lot of complaints about varnish spray comes from people who don't know how to use them properly. I need to know because I want to varnish my new Dark Angels and I have never used this product before.

I like them alot, but i have to say, the first thing that shot through my head while looking at them was just "Well, these guys look really bland." And they do, there is no amound of high contrast on your minis, nothing that really draws the eye. Sorry to be so harsh, but i really do think that you can do better. Have you thought about adding some wear & tear to them? That usually looks really great on white armour.

Looking good there, anon. You might want to think about adding some more chipping on his feed and kneepads, that's usually were the paintwork tends to chip in the first place and the look quite pristine on your model.

Sculpting the face of my squiggoth.

This kit seems to be a pretty good size match for the FW gargantuan squiggoth. I'm considering investing in another one and this time getting a tyrannosaur to do a simple head swap and save myself a bit of sculpting effort. Both kits together are still only about one tenth the cost of the FW one.

Unfortunately, I forgot to account for the weight of the putty on the front end and I already glued the body together, so it's going to be tricky to rig a counterweight into it. Might just drill a hole somewhere the armour plating will cover anyway or glue some metal bits under the howdah.

Anyone know a good place to get a base big enough for these things? Needs one about 10-12 inches long, I think.

>Just buy small, cheap tubes. GW's new ones are actually pretty handy,

This is awful advice. Those tin tubes simply dent under pressure, rather than a plastic tube where it returns to shape, you have a lot less control of the amount coming out.

I know GW are pretty bad for hobby supplies, but even I was surprised when they went from plastic bottles to re-labelled pound shop super glue.

I can't imagine little timmy trying to assemble a Knight with that stuff.

Really depends on what range you are working with and how fussy you are about getting everything perfect. Most of the newer plastic kits don't really need any filling so GS is strictly for conversion work. Older models, especially finecast ones will need some kind of filler to not look like crap.

For most issues with GW models, you can use a simpler filler putty like squadron green to cover any gaps and sand it smooth. You only need a proper sculpting putty like green stuff (AKA kneadatite yellow/blue) for major repairs and conversions.
>>
I've decided all my old Marines and Blood Bowl teams are going to go on 32mm bases. I'm not paying £27 for 100 though off GW, and in the UK the only cheaper ones are MDF ones with a flat edge rather than a bevel.

I think it might be exactly the same as squadron green putty, but I'm not certain.

It's OK for covering small gaps and smoothing out transitions, but is too fluid to form into proper shapes. I've been told that some people manage to use it for sculpting texture onto stuff, but it never worked for me.

Going to need some big lobbas for this guy. What are my options?

Scratch-building is fun, but the biggest tube I have is evergreen half-inch which is a little bit too puny. Nobody seems to seel styrene tubes larger than that, so I would need to use some other material, which makes me less keen.

Puppets war do a fantastic orc super cannon (pic related), at the fairly reasonable price of 17 euros. But it's resin and I don't like working with resin, especially on the bits that stick out of a model and are likely to get scratched.

Takom make a 1/35 scale kit of a heavy siege howitzer, which looks perfect, but is way expensive (about £60 for two even if I order from china and about £90 for two if I don't).

Anyone got any other suggestions?

It is a meme, it is worthless for its intended purpose because after you have fileld the gaps the stuff shrinks, leaving you with a gap again. Best thing to fill the gaps with is milliput or equivelent. Just fill the surface with it and gently use water and your finger to smooth it.

No joke, put it in the freezer.

From Wikipedia:
"In general, cyanoacrylate is an acrylic resin that rapidly polymerises in the presence of water (specifically hydroxide ions), forming long, strong chains, joining the bonded surfaces together. Because the presence of moisture causes the glue to set, exposure to normal levels of humidity in the air causes a thin skin to start to form within seconds, which very greatly slows the reaction. Because of this cyanoacrylate is applied thinly, to ensure that the reaction proceeds rapidly for bonding.

The reaction with moisture can cause a container of glue which has been opened and resealed to become unusable more quickly than if never opened. To minimise this reduction in shelf life cyanoacrylate, once opened, can be stored in an airtight container with a package of silica gel desiccant. Another technique is to insert a hypodermic needle into the opening of a tube. After using the glue, residual glue soon clogs the needle, keeping moisture out. The clog is removed by heating the needle (e.g. with a lighter) before use. The polymerisation is also temperature-dependent: storage below the freezing point of water stops it, so keeping it in the freezer is also effective."

Any tips on how to proceed from this point? (Besides obvious parts that aren't painted yet) So far this is base coats and washes. I'm new to painting so the reason I ask is because it looks like it has some natural highlights from washing, but it's still good to go back and add in stronger highlights with a lighter paint?

i think i need to make some sort of a stand here tonight.

as a fellow /pol/ack i get where you are getting at but heres the thing.
at my LGS we leave politics outside of the door and just play and enjoy our silly hobby we rarely get to do, nobody does politics of any sort because it doesnt really belong there. we take it outside after game whatever if needed. and yes every camp gets thrown out not just ebil nadzis.

i pay nids and here im a girl, my not too serious colour scheme just feeds that meme so why not go with it (dont get the wrong idea people, mostly girls play nids as we know).

im 14 years into this hobby and have painted 4 armies "seriously" with canon colours but wheres the fun in that.

If you're asking if I would collect Primaris Marines *solely* because they made a new Johnny sculpt in Mk X Gravis Armour, the answer is "no". Since I'm already planning to add some Primaris Marines to my existing Blood Angels army, however, if GW decided to expand the Primaris line by reproducing "homage" models that are throwbacks to old sculpts from before the Dark Age of Technology, then yeah, I'd buy the Primaris Johnny.

It'd certainly be easier than trying to convert/sculpt one.

I need some help with edge highlighting guys. I've just started painting and while everything works as it should ( I watched a million tutorials) I can't seem to get highlighting right. I've tried 00, 000 and 5/0 brushes but every time the bristles are not strong enough once they get wet, the point doesn't really give off paint and I either get nothing on it or too much. If I wet the paint it just flows all over and the line ends up thick. Is there some special secret trick I missed perhaps? My bushes are supposed to be good quality. I've tried both sable and synthetic.
>>
>>54072896
That's a standard experience. Have you tried getting the paint wet/thin, then using a second brush to dab into it? I've found it helps when I need less-soaked bristles

you could get The Master's brand brush soap from hobby lobby and you shouldn't fuck up your brushes, look into how to best use it. as long as you don't get a bunch of dry paint into the ferrule you should be fine. and citadel brushes aren't *that* nice, they're okay but you'd be fine just using cheaper brushes, it's all nearly the same shit anyway unless you get sable. I have used reaper and royal brands paintbrushes and those work just as good as citadel.

I know the standard GW paintjob is Waaagh! Flesh green as the base with Warpstone Glow green over it, and I do like the look of Warpstone Glow, I'd just like my guys a little darker, but not quite Rogue Trader era Sallies dark. Just a shade or two.

Would something like Caliban Green as the base coat then Warpstone Glow as the layer look good and give the right effect, or would it make my dudes look too much like Dark Angels?

>>
>>54074729
It depends on what you want to do. I'll just explain how I do it. You will really save yourself some time and effort by getting either a spray primer and spray base coat, or one of those paints that are both in one. Dunno if you know but you need a primer which is a specific type of paint that goes on first, it's usually black or gray or white, GW has "undercoat" paints which aren't technically a primer but they work basically the same. So you spray on let's say the black primer which helps actual paint to stick on (because just straight up using normal acrylic paint won't stick on the mini properly) then spray let's say Caliban Green spray if you were doing dark angels. now the whole model is green and all you have to do is paint the details.

So for my army, I just paint GW chaos black undercoat, then mephiston red spray base coat, then go over the whole thing with a wash and paint the details on with their layer brush, which is "medium" sized. You would use this brush to paint stuff like shoulder pads, and so on. Then you need a small brush like size 00 or GW's "detail" brush to paint small stuff like eyes and do edge highlighting.

So most of my painting is really only 2 brushes, but occasionally you might use a larger brush like the large GW base brush if you were painting the base coat on a tank instead of spraying. And you will probably want another medium brush to do rough things like drybrushing which tends to make the brush unusable for other things. Really though you could just check out GW's guide on their brushes which is pretty helpful.

Also WARNING: I haven't heard a lot of people with this problem but when I started out, I made the mistake of using a detail brush for literally everything because I had poor brush control and it made things "easier", but this is a bad idea because I ended up taking forever to paint anything. Use the biggest brush you can when painting a detail, because it'll be faster and help u git gud.
>>
>>54072107
ok, just making sure you were actually a troll and not a garden variety idiot here's a (You)
>>
>>54074729
Generally, I find that I do the vast majority of stuff with two good brushes and a couple of cheap ones which are just used for mixing, drybrushing and washes. In citadel terms, a medium base and a small layer, about a size 1 and a size 00 in most other schemes. For vehicles you may want to have a couple of larger ones... I mostly paint orks, so my vehicles are a load of tiny panels but marine vehicles have much larger flat areas which might benefit from a bigger brush.

Also, try painting big flat panels with sponges rather than brushes.

Looks pretty neat for your second model, commendable of you being able to stay within the lines.
The metal looks a bit unfinished in some areas, give it two or three thin coats for a solid finish.
Red on the shoulders and head could use highlights.
Give him some more contrast, especially on the backback. He needs some more color back there.
Overall though, good job! Keep up the good work!
>>
>>54076472
I kinda like it. There's definately room for improvement but the colour theme is nice. If I'd were to add something to it it would be to paint his knees in the same golden colour as the skull on his breast. Painting his sabatons red would also match up nicely with his red gauntlets.

You got any fluff done for the chapter?
>>
>>54076472

I'd make the helmet more uniform in colour and maybe swap the red and lighter silver on the aquila. Feels like it bleeds into the shoulders somewhat.

Otherwise it's an improvement! Try two thinner, smooth coats on the metallic armour. Still seems a bit blotchy (from the primer?).

All at once? I generally just do small batches with isopropyl, but even working in a production line fashion it would take ages to do that many. You don't have an ultrasonic cleaning tub do you? They are capable of stripping paint after it has been soaked in isopropyl.

Try really hard to have the joins hidden by the parts of the model and if that isn't possible at least make sure you can push the pieces tight together and test fit them before you start painting.

In most cases GW's multipose kits aren't too bad for this. The only real issue I have is the guns where one hand is attached to the front grip of the gun and you have to line the wrist of the arm up with it. Those suck.

Thanks a lot guys! It's my fourth model actually, the previous two are kind of like the first.

Yeah, I got some minimal fluff done for the Chapter. They are the Bloody Pinions (hence the aquila styling), they are about 3000-4000 year old, BA successors, they focus on quick, up and personal aerial/frontal CC assaults. They live in the Galactic Northeast, near the Ghoul Stars, their main task is to keep general vigilance over the region and deal with known/ unknown xenos threats that appear nearby.Their homeworld is Auron III, a cold/continental feudal world transitioning into an Agriworld. My main source of inspo is general Germanic historical stuff, I try to go for a 'medieval knight with pagan symbolism' aesthetic. They usually have German-sounding names. I actually started to do some writefaggotry for them, you might see it uploaded later if interested.

You may be able to get a similar look with non metallic paints if you apply paint in a scratchy/stippled textured way, preferrably something with a lot of contrast like black and white and the went over that with brown ink.

Ok, posted this a few threads ago and didn't really get anything.
I got some metal painboys a while back and the first one turned out really good, the thing is I just don't know how I should go about painting this guy.
His head just fucks with the color scheme I had going for all my orks and I dont know if I should just straight up paint him red and white or something else entirely. Any input on this would be helpful.

>I have a basic understanding of how light works.
It's kinda hard to bell in text based communication, I didn't mean to step on your toes.

You definitely need more than just a basic understanding.
To get the look really right you have to have a deep understanding of it.
Reflected light and ambient light for example.
The pecs on a marine's chest are gonna reflect light off of each other. That is information that you have to communicate visually via painting.

The example here >>54078657 kind of look like it's just painted yellow.
That makes it look matte. To really make it look shiny you have to ramp up the contrast, and really use precise punchy highlights.
This example here kinda illustrates my point. The top row look from left to right simulates the gradient from rough to smooth surfaces. Your paintjob right now kind of looks like it is more to the left than the right of that scale.

Priming gives overall coverage and something for your paint to grab on to. Various colors also provide either a brighter or darker overall finish.

Undercoating is where you will leave after painting the basecoat to give your basecoat shadows

Basecoating is what you want your base color to be.

A wash is a substitute for undercoating because the paint is thin and pools in the recesses leaving shadow effects. If you paint it over your entire basecoat it will make it a shade darker, this will allow you to go back over with a basecoat to provide a method of highlighting

This miniature is a good example of all this as it's exactly what I did. White primer, basecoat with a wash then touched up with the original basecoat

Priming is the first coat applied to a miniature. It usually is supposed to bond to the material and provide grit for the later layers of regular paint to adhere on.
Undercoating and basecoating are sometimes interchangeably used, but it's context based.
Basecoating or undercoating can also just mean you are laying down the first layer of paint on something.
Example:
>you are priming your miniature black
>you basecoat the minis skin brown
>you basecoat the minis pants blue
and then you add the other layers.

I see what you mean, I'll certainly try to educate myself on light then and in the meanwhile study up on more NMM tutorial stuff.

As for my guard I think for now I'll just paint them the way I know how. Thanks for the helpful feedback.

Trek. You can be totally absorbed in your painting and just listen to it. Assuming you know the characters even if it's an episode you don't remember you can get the basic gestalt without ever looking at the screen.

Hi fellas. I'm new to the hobby and my first box of dark eldar are arriving tomorrow. Because I'm new I think I'm going to stick with citadel paints to keep the process smooth, but I'm curious to know if there are any alternative brand of paint that work well with GWs models. The pots are kind of expensive, and when I'm more confident in my painting skills I'd like to dabble in cheaper brand if possible.

Army painter works pretty well for most stuff. Tamya paints are also pretty alright as long as you don't try anything too fancy with it.

vallejo or AP like the guy said but it's not as if these are colossal savings.

Put together another Sanguin Guard to see how the metallic paint would look. I like this more, thought I was done with the chest piece but now I see I should throw in some more chrome around the edges of the pecs and abs.

The one on the upgrade sprue (furthest to the right in this picture) reminds me of Peter Graves, who played Captain Oveur in Airplane!

Istvaan had black sand. Most recognizable way to do Istvaan bases is dark dirt and bodies or wreckage of loyalist legions present at the event.
>>
>>54075037
I tried that and it fucked up the detail completely. Maybe I had shit gesso or am retarded, but either way I got awful results.
>>
>>54081464
Did you wait for it to dry?

If you're the person who thinned it down and then applied multiple coats, you're doing it wrong. Just pick some model you don't give a shit about and glob over it and wait.
>>
>>54081464

Gesso is supposed to shrink as it cures, so even if you glob it and cover detail when it's wet, it SHOULD shrink back and cling to the surface to reveal all the details when dry. Like pic related.

However, I don't trust gesso because it is not meant for miniatures, it is meant for painters to spread over a canvas with a large brush or spade.

Instead, I use Stynlyrez by badger. From a good airbrush company, dealing specifically in hobby and miniature model paint, and with a "specialized formula years in the making", which while might just be marketing bullshit hype, it does tell me it's a unique formula that was made with airbrushing and models in mind. The great part is it's for airbrushing so if you paint it with a paintbrush, it's already super thin and runny. I just slopped it on the model, and it's milky enough to not have to worry about covering detail. Then as with all proper brush on primers, it shrinks as it dries and cures, revealing all the details. Works great, I just slop it on unthinned real fast, only takes 15 minutes to dry and 24 hours to cure unlike Vallejo (hours to dry, days to week to cure).

I recommend it over tubs of gesso. Badger Stynlyrez. If you aibrush it, they say not to thin it and use a 0.5 mm needle and 35 psi, but most people just thin it because lol who the fuck airbrushes with that setup.
>>
>>54081486
>>54081510
That wasn't me, and for a couple of days, yes. Put it on less thickly than the second pic there, and it didn't shrink and reveal anything.
>>
>>54081623

Scumbag gesso that's why I don't trust that shit. Might just be a bad brand since gesso is a generic category and not a specific brand.
>>
>>54081623
What brand did you use?

I just use generic acrylic gesso, the first hit on Amazon. Definitely test it with one model first. Again, it's worse with the details (slightly) than spraying, but sometimes you're just not in a position for copious amounts of spray paint inhalation.
>>
>>54074969
To be fair, a lot of people get really snobby when they achieve a high level of skill in a field. Thus, a great painter might deface Duncan and claim he's a shit modeller.

...

Maybe I should add magnets to my bases and swap them around for the occasion.

I tend to watch alot of stand up or debates when I paint.
Let me recommend some comics for you to check out if you haven't already seen them:
Jimmy Carr, Dara o'briain, Russel Howard and Jim Jefferies. All four of them have alot of full stand up shows availible on youtube.
I also have a tendency to rewatch old American Dad!-episodes when I paint.

EDGE HIGHLIGHTS with wild rider red and firedragon bright.

Look at the kabalite box, they threw in gold to some of the armour panels randomly to break up the colour and make each unit a bit more unique, decide on a secondary colour and paint some shoulderpads or kneepads that colour. White usually works well with the red scheme.
