I want to build a tiny imperial themed gothic cathedral. I was thinking about using the Sanctum Imperialis or the Basilica administratum, or maybe some of the smaller buildings in the Gardens of Morr, plenty of candles and purity seals. Should I use something else? What should I put in the sanctum? A book, a sarcophagus or something more bizarre?
I'm trying to brainstorm some ideas, so if you have any ideas please feel free to share.

You've got pieces from different models there. The arms are from GW Choas Marines and terminators, but those bodies look like the hostile "definitely not Tyranid" aliens from Fantasy Forge's Kryomek game.
>>
>>54037453
If you want some thing small check out the puppetswar church. That looks really nice.
Or get the Pegasus Hobbies gothic ruins kit if you want to do something bigger. They also look really good.

As for what to put in it, I'm not sure.
You could maybe use some of the Sector Imperials parts? Imagine the tank with the tyranid parts with the leftovers of an imperial saint for example.
Westwind miniatures also has some specimen tanks like that.

Another easy thing may be to just put a miniature up as statue on a pedestal with benches around for people to pray and worship and stuff like candles, coins, prayers etc strew around the base as offerings.

Oh Venethrax. First model I saw from Warmachine, got me into the game. Wish it hadn't gone to crap. I still have my small Cryx force, but it's hard to find a game around here anyway.

I feel you man.
Now I'm thinking of making a unit of Nurgle Marauders inspired by the red robed acolytes in the picture, which I absolutely adore. Would you guys agree that Skaven Plague Monks would make excellent basis for such conversions? Their woe-staves can easily be turned into Flails and Great Weapons which I'll probably be mixing freely within the unit so that either weapon set up is availible for games. Regarding the model itself snipping off their tails and adjusting/converting/replacing the heads should be sufficient to accomplish my goal.
What do you guys think? I'd love to hear any input you might have be it from the point of fluff, gameplay or actually wip-related.

Oh wow, that looks very nice, although it is maybe a bit big for the thing I'm thinking at, although it may add character. I was basically thinking about a was moving imperial chapel built on legs or tracks and half-sentient. So the smaller the actual building the easier it is to convert.

>You could maybe use some of the Sector Imperials parts
Didn't think about that, I'll check it out.

>When would one want to use a flesh wash instead of just basic shading/highlighting?
It's not really an either or decision. You can do both.
Start with the wash and take it from there.

>And how much quality would I be sacrificing if I substituted Army Painter for (along with using in tandem with my existing) Vallejo Game Colors?
None or maybe a tiny bit depending on the colors you replace.
Saying one brand of paint is superior to another entire line is just not right.
That line has good yellows, that one good metals etcpp.
From a brief talk to the guys from my FLGS it sounds like the Warpaints are pretty popular, so I guess they are alright. On their recommendation I picked up the golds from armypainter, haven't used them though.

Since DX4 technical drones are good now, and they're also coincidentally no longer sold, I'm thinking about eventually building some earth caste builders to stand in. Some guy is apparently way ahead in this regard, and made this.

I already know most of the pieces (necron arms, cut in half drone case, etc), but the piece in the middle eludes me. I feel like I seen it before. It seems to have ridges on the side, a central ridge on top, and a hinge in back. I thought it was a cut down old-style Tau battlesuit thruster, but those are flat in back. and don't have hinges or ridges. Anyone have ideas?

In honour of the new edition I'm finally starting a proper Imperium army with a mix of Guard, Ministorum and Mechanicus. For the Guard I'm planning to paint mono-colour uniforms, then rough highlights, and then abuse the fuck out of washes, then another set of minimal finer highlights to get about a 2-3 hour turnaround on each guardsman.

Pic is two versions of the prototype guardsmen schemes and to the right is a very old model I painted as a kid, repainted to some degree. Also if you notice the mold lines and clipping marks on the guardsmen I've had them built and primed in a box for about 7 years, finding them and some other miscellaneous Imperium units really turned me onto the idea.

>>
>>54040147
People used to call that overbrushing.
I understand a heavy drybrush to be drybrushing until you have applied more paint than usual.
That is an important distinction to make since the wetness of the paint matters.

Anyway, there is no official committee that decides what to call what technique, so it's not like the evil corporate overlords in GW HQ have any influence what people call it, aside from what they put into their tutorials.

>>54040229
I like the color palette on these.
I think the Cadian would benefit from more contrast between fatigues and armor. Maybe go over one of the two with another wash? Or paint a different base color before washing.

Completely monotone is gonna look a bit boring, especially if you got a whole lot of these next to each other.
Unless of course you are gonna add some kind of markings on them. I could see that working.
Just the regular old numbers and regiment badge would do a lot to spice the guy up.

>One that isnt a plastic dinosaur toy
so you mean a count as model rather than something that looks like a squiggoth?

Cause a dinosaur toy is the best place to start.
If you want to sculpt a model that big from scratch you are better off looking at the portfolios of professional sculptors, because for hobbyists that is not really viable unless they plan on casting it and selling a garage kit.

Not sure what you are after.

Or maybe the operating words in your first post were 'actually decent', but then it's the same thing. You need the skill to sculpt the head at least, that's not really something you can get around.
Maybe if you build an armored head with some kind of breathing apparatus... Would look odd if the squiggoth was wearing one and the orks surrounding it dont't.

You want a pin vise with a handle that turns on one end - the tool in the middle here. The one with collettes on both ends *seems* cool, but that wears off very quickly when the back end starts digging into your hand.

I think the metals and clothes both look really great for the look youre trying to get. I think the handlebar wrappings is a bit too bright for something that shouldn't be a center of focus on a darker looking mini. Also the flames should be more of a distinct colour from the flames. Those are just my opinions though and really nothing to do with the technical aspect.

i, like many people have a windsor and newton series 7 size 1, you can use it for everything and it will last many years if you don't beat it. It's definitely worth 10 euros, but if you want something cheaper i believe Da vinci, rosemary(not sure on this name) and raphael make other brushes which are pretty good indeed and cost slightly less.

For anyone, like me, who wants to do Primaris Iron Hands but lack bionics, I asked Anvil Industry if their actual large bionics (for terminators) would work on Primaris.
I also asked if they were planning on making Primaris-scaled kits, something that would be much better than using terminator sized kits.

Good news on the horizon, they are one of the best 3rd party providers imo. I can vouch for their Chainaxes.

weeabork update:

finished a knife ashygyaru, almost finished the one with the shoota but I want him to have the gloved hand but I only have one left that's reserved for something else.
Mostly finished another katana boy's body, was gonna give him a helmetless head with a samurai topknot but I think a helmet would be more fitting considering what the armor looks like. Gave the *unsheathes kataner* boy a unfinished helmet.

primed a couple more boyz and put some layers on em, though only the skin has more than 1 or two latyers (I swear the photo makes the shoulder pad look chunkier than it is)

got a cork bulletin board for the bases but the strip of cork was really thin, though it still makes for a decent concrete look and I can always layer it (not like I;m going to do it too much since these models are for SWAG)

Is there any way to redeem GW's lighter grey colours? I ended up switching from Ulthuan Grey to Army Painter's Gorgon Hide because I was so sick of it congealing (even Duncan can't make Ulthuan Grey go on smooth), but I was hoping that Celestra Grey would be dark enough to not go on chalky after getting a pot recently. Went to use it tonight, and even trying my hardest to avoid it, there was still some lumpiness.

Could adding medium instead of water help, maybe? Or should I just avoid any GW greys lighter than Dawnstone?

Weapons work best when they're not painted too similarly to the armour, IMO, so not so sure about black. So maybe just full metallic?

Right now, you get 20 Poxwalkers in the new 8th Edition starter set, "Dark Imperium". Eventually, I'm sure GW will release them in a box by themselves, but when they do, they'll have to be different models; the sprues in Dark Imperium are designed to cram as many models into the box as possible, so some sprues contain bitz for multiple units.

It's a good deal if you can get someone to buy the models you're not going to use. The rulebook that comes in the box is the full-sized hardcover edition instead of the little paperback pocket jobs we had last edition.

That's the annoying part is figuring out how to do proper Iron warriors. Spikes look fine on them, but anything organic like demon flesh growths or tentacles looks off. Also trophy racks even don't seem to fit imo. They seem like quite the anti chaos chaos, like they use it as a weapon rather than worship it. Different Thousand Sons reporting in.
My solution was to make anything that's supposed to be a demon engine into a kind of reanimated undead monster with guns. And for hellbrute/ dread I'm planning to chaos up one of the Osirian Contemptors a bit - not that it needs much.
>>
>>54037081
>first attempt at edge highlighting.

where?
>>
>>54036244
So I've managed to bash together a Ven Dread, Contemptor Dread, Termie and normal Captain, +15 Tac Marines, and 5 Assaults. Was thinking about getting some MkIIIs off Ebay, a Dev box, and a Tac box to make a full Assault and Dev squad. Yes/no?
>>
>>54049430
I play the trophy racks and spikes by ear. Individual soldiers may worship Chaos more or less than their brothers, and skull trophies may be displayed simply for the psychological impact.

It's a neat and easy way to tell squads apart too. I have a footslogger squad meant for camping my backfield and taking potshots with their autocannon which are more 'classic' Chaos Marines with horned helmets and spiky trophies, and another squad buttoned up in a Rhino which are generally carrying more gear like grenades, pistols, and extra ammo, as well as lacking more ostentatious decorations like horns on their helmets to better fit in their dedicated transport.

I bought some 3rd party Thousand Sons parts (combination of Scibor parts and Wargames Exclusive) and heavily modified a Dark Vengeance hellbrute. In universe he was put into stasis mid mutation, and post Heresy he was placed into a hellbrute and continued to mutate.
I also got lucky and found 2 old metal chaos dreads for cheap at my local store that are going to be done in a similar manner.
It's hard being a TS sometimes, even with all the cool new stuff.
>>
>>54050427
I like that fluff background. Personally I can get behind flesh mutations with both legions, IW mostly because oblits were the thing that I first saw (and made me fall in love with decimation), and TS because flesh-morphing mutation is right up their alley.

Though on a second thought, TS-proper probably wouldn't have flesh, right? Aren't they all dust? I guess I'm thinking Tzeentch-aligned CSM, or did they retcon some TS to be (((regular))) people now?

>>
>>54050496
Any TS with even latent psychic talent survived the Rubric with their bodies intact and their powers greatly increased, and range from fairly mundane Aspiring Sorcerers babysitting their dusty Rubric brethren, up to Exalted Sorcerers that have grown extra arms and tear around on their own Discs of Tzeentch. That has pretty much always been the canon.

>>

You can get a three headed cerberus like one from Avatars of Wars.
If you are going for a cybermastiff rater I'd recommend the maxmini necrohounds.
If you are just looking for dogs there are quite a few places to look. Crooked Dice, and Warlord are good places to start for that.
Reaper has a lot. Regular dogs, undead dogs for that cyberzombie look or more monstrous creatures like the cerberus type deal.

You can also get armored fighting dogs for frostgrave, malifaux, and warmahordes.
Carnevale had some too I think, but the minis may hard to find.
You can still get the Rackham dog handler from Cadwallon.com though, it's a beautiful set.

If you rake a regular dog and plopp a few cables down here and there and maybe the odd lense to suggest a bionic eye you can also make your own cybermastiffs.

Three headed cybermastiffs with vials on their back are probably gonna need a bit of work.

Current plan is Black Ark Corsairs for the body, arms and legs
Sicarian infiltrator machine pistols
and Eccentric miniatures great helms

Does anyone know how they'd compare in height with MKIII and MKIV space marines?
And if anyone's used any eccentric miniatures helms do you know if they'd look ridiculously over/under sized?

It would seem they are no longer selling it.
sorry for the confusion, here's what I meant.
It's more of a monster type creature anyway. It comes with a 40mm base iirc.
I bought one a few years back with the intention of using it as chaos spawn I think.

If you would be interested in something like that you can get a cerberus from the archeron faction from cadwallon too though.
Not dog sized either, so probably not.

It's not a primer but you can use it as one if you want. It'll just scratch easier. The website straight up tells you it's only for basecoating. If it doesn't say it's a primer anywhere on the description of website why would you think it's a primer? The website never specifies if it's a unicorn either.

With a fair bit of difficulty, I'm afraid. Cutting perfect circles without specialised machinery is very difficult and you need to get them just right for most designs. Probably better to just buy them.

That said, you could try using GW flying bases. They have a convenient hole to fit a peg through right in the centre and are transparent so you could maybe make a window to show the numbers.

You want to paint it black, then paint the individual teeth, so the recesses between remain dark.
>>
>>54054248
>>54054269

First pic's too dark to tell much, try getting some light on the front of the model,

Second looks decent. Color choice looks fine, consider looking at some of the painting guides in the OP or Duncan's videos on youtube, the blue would really benefit from a brighter highlight.
>>
>>54054248
Stop trying to paint all the teeth and only touch the front of each tooth individually, leaving recess dark.
>>
>>54054226
>I dunno how much of this do you think is swappable before it loses cohesiveness for IG if I keep the uniform colors and some of the heraldry?
I think the important thing are the colors and the theme.
As long as you keep those consistent you should be fine.
Kettle helm vs Sallet is still in the same ballpark imo. If you paint them both in the same style,, i.e. black with the red stripe there should be no question about coherency.

There are a few big things like completely changing the silhouette of the minis. Fully clothed and rebreather wearing guys like yours are gonna look odd next to half naked catachans for example.

If the other guys represent veterans or scions or something like that the helmets may even make sense and serve as identifiers.

Big fan of your army btw. They look great.

There's not a hard and fast rule for what color highlight to go with what base. Yes Brighter colors on raised areas/edges is the most commonly used highlighting technique and a good place to start.

Consider this chart and what you want your blue to look like. Keep in mind the relative ratio of how much is highlighted vs base tone can also impact the final look.

Regarding the teeth as is right now, maybe a brown wash than dab a highlight on their very most raised edge to give them some depth.
