okay, so I may need some help.

See, I've got a friend who is willing to split the cost for the Dark Imperium box, as I really only want the Nurgle and my buddy wants the Primaris. We would each pay half, and I would get the rule-books, more or less.

But as we both are Poorfags, we wondered if it is better to wait and buy the "Know no fear" box instead, and supplement it with the "easy to build" figures, as it would be cheaper? We've calculated the miniatures we'd both lose out on, but in terms of gameplay experience, buying/owning experience and painting/converting experience, which do you think would be best? Buying DI or wait for KNF?
>>

>>
>>54013153

Not Mephiston? Khorne red seems a bit dark.

What about the details? That may be a bit fiddly since I haven't gotten myself a proper fine detail brush yet.

>>54013159
Trying to stop laughing after reading Assdeptus Shitsenioritas!
>>
>>54013107
I want to die. It will be years before they update all of the other subfactions of marines and we'll lose all of the cool variation stuff that took literally decades to finally release.

Ravenwing Black Knights, Death Company, Deathwatch, Thunderwolf Calvary, Dread Librarians and axeman Dread.

It's like they don't even care, and then they'll discontinue the whole line once the first model for "Dark Angels Primaris" comes out so all we're left with is these super watered down versions of our factions.

>>
>>54013138
You can simplify things by cutting down on the number of colours you use, e.g. if you do the armour and the cables in the same metallic colour the entire chest area becomes much less fiddly.
>>
>>54013171
Regular marines can be upgraded to Primaris. So probably that.

I'm not sure, in Espandor he's freaking out around the cathedral but there is like one comment from a random guy that sounds as if he's clueless of the "evil in the air" sort of thing, might just be bad writing though.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the extra organs was some sort of backdoor in case they go astray or just some kill-switch of sorts, that would mean civil war for sure.

>>
>>54013172
Agrax won't look as good on mephiston and if you're going for tabletop standard you can hide a less than perfect paintjob better with a darker, grungier scheme.

You don't really need a fine detail brush for tabletop standard, just put a good point on your standard and you'll be ok.

Details can be Evil Sunz Scarlet on the lenses and Balthasar Gold for metallic stuff. You can literally base it leadbelcher, paint cloth and large panels khorne red, paint lenses evil sunz, paint metallic details balthasar, wash it all over with agrax and you have yourself a painted dude.

Hi. This is a pic of Lt. Varrus from the Macragge box set. He's supposed to be a pilot for a crashed aquila.

In one hand he has a rather interesting looking bolt pistol (that's what the accompanying booklet says anyway).

However I've never seen a bolt pistol that looks similar to it (in model or depicted form). Any idea if it has a name, pattern, mark, etc? Any other models use a similar bolt pistol (as opposed to sub pistol)?
>>
>>54013282
High quality acrylics are expensive. Citadel paints are a bit more expensive than most due to brand. Really good quality for the price, regardless.

I buy Vallejo paints, you get more and in a handy dropper bottle.

Still expensive though, but less than GW paints.
>>
>>54013282
If you find the paints expensive then maybe this hobby isn't for you. Try something like X-wing instead.

You also don't need to buy a million different shades of paint. Get darker colors that you can wash with either Nuln or Agrax and then just highlight using the same color. No need to buy another color just for highlights. You could probably get by with just 14 pots and a can of black Krylon and you'll be good to go.

I was pulling your leg, I honestly have no idea where GW are going with Sisters, though I wouldn't mind some new models... But seriously, you may as well get some now, the next few months are probably going to be DG/ Space Marines anyway, and people have been saying September for codecies, so I'd assume that they'd probably make some starter kits then. If nothing else, you can work on a colour scheme.

With 2 5m teams only 5 will get the 2nd phase before retaliation.

Also, depending on how successful your first team is, the opponent might be able to remove enough models to deny attacks from our second team

If you are new players and are constantly together and can play often and don't mind leaving the stuff that isn't minis at one of you's place, go ahead and buy the Know no Fear. But know this: you will eventually need to spend quite a lot in paint, more dices and new minis, which will force you to buy the indexes.

It's rough for poorfags, I should know.

Why are people so confused about the Keyword system. It is incredibly simple and easy to use. At a glance you can see what units can be used together with the Faction Keywords and what units are affected by any buffs.
Take Rowboat Girlyman for example. His Faction keywords are "Imperium, Adeptus Astartes, Ultramarines" so as the rule book states he can be included in any army that shares one of those keywords as long as the entire army shares that keyword. So obviously he works in a "Ultramarines" army as such an army would all have all three "Imperium, Adeptus Astartes, Ultramarines" he can also be in a deathwatch army as the entire army would share two key words "Imperium, Adeptus Astartes" A sisters of battle army would work with the entire army having the same keyword "Imperium" and the same goes for imperial guard.

Also buffs work the same. In that Ultramarines army they would receive buffs from the "Master of Battle" rule as it uses the Keyword "Imperium" and from the "XIII Primarch" rule as it uses the "Ultramarines" Keyword. But the Deathwatch, sisters, and guard would only be affected by the "Master of Battle" rule.

I can't understand why people need someone too hold their hand and walk them through this.

Also earlier someone said codexs trumps rule book. This is true of course, but once a rule exists like "All units must be from the same Faction" then it does not matter what faction it is be it "Imperium" or "Deathwatch" as long as they all share one Faction Keyword they are the same Faction. You don't need a Codex or index to give you permission you already have it. That said there is nothing stopping GW from releasing the Deathwatch codex and inside they state "units with the Faction Keyword "Deathwatch" can only be used in battle forged Armys were all units share the Faction Keyword "Deathwatch" (except better written as I don't write rules). But this would remove all Deathwatch units from all armys.

>>54014417
Also if people fear WAAC and deathstars from this the same Keyword system that lets them all be in the same army also makes sticking them in the same army pointless. Sure you can stick a Primaris Lieutenant in your imperial guard army but the rule you would want from him "Tactical Precision" only effects <chapter> and Imperial Guard units lack a <chapter> keyword. So you can stick him in there but you are probably better off with a HQ that actually effects a Guard army. So people wanting to get synergies are probably going to build Army's that are more focused with multiple matching keywords to increase the number of effects that can effect all units. While Army's made up of just one matching Keyword will overall see less buffs as army wide Keywords will be more rare.

Absolutely. But as codexs are released and we get more units that buff other units of the same sub Faction. So a more focused list could be better becuse more Keyword based buffs would effect more of the army.

Also that list would be better if the knight was replaced with rowboat girlyman becuse one of his buffs would effect that whole army.

He is talking out of his ass. Only the final dice roll result is considered, after modifiers.

That's the point. To get the buffs and a army with more synergy the keyword system leads you to more focused lists. Sure rowboat girlyman will buff all imperial Factions he does more for Ultramarines. Just because you can run everything together does not mean you should.

Am I to understand that if you want flyers behaving as they did in 7th, with being able to fly off the board without dieing, you have to use the Skies of Death section, including the addition of the Dogfight phase?

And am I also reading THAT correctly to understand that though the flyers' facing matters for the dogfighting, they still don't matter for shooting at ground targets?

I mean of course the Primaris are going to replace oldmarines; there is literally no reason to make oldmarines anymore, in universe. Primaris have all the benefits and less flaws plus some.

If they can, as it was I think stated, upgrade oldmarines into Primaris too, I expect that'll be the next few hundreds years in the making too. Lost marines will be replaced with Primaris, and eventually all marines will be Primaris.

As someone who plays Guard and just looked at them for keks, even I was left a bit confused.

The Covenants are pretty unbalanced for one thing...
Khorne is all right
Slaanesh is probably the best for melee swarm Renegades
Nurgle is almost pointless (how many weapons really have S3-4 but at least AP-1? On the spot I can only think of Galvanic Rifles with 6, Cawl Bolters and Gauss Flayers...)
Tzeentch is super situational.

And costs are all over the place.

Bolt of Change is good.
Boon of Change is good... 1/3 of the time
Treason looks great on paper... until you determine it's a 72% to manifest followed by a 10+ (for Ld9) on 2d6 or 16%. Or a 12% chance of going off per cast.

And that's assuming it's a Ld9. For Ld 10 it's only 6%

Thats dumb as shit, you keep the stealth niggers away from your tanks by making them deploy further away, not get cover saves, thats dumb shit that im glad is gone
>>
>>54015539
>How do I even prevent this
deploy infantry or some other unit close enough to your tanks so he can't deploy that close to you
>>
>>54015576
Get a bunch of domions with meltas and throw them in immolators, all that's really changed is that you might want heavy flamers instead of multi-meltas on the tanks.
>>
>>54015565
>>54015575
How does this stop him from shooting my tanks? He can still target the tanks normally, and it's hard to cover all angles when he has 18" range meltas.

>>54015582
Commanders were only 160 points each

He had a lot more power on the other side of the map, like some broadsides and a riptide.
>>
>>54015576
The first thing you'll want are proxies, because fuck buying sisters from GW. Unless you're made of money, of course.

Brothers and Sisters of the Imperium, I come today to propose and discuss the formation of a new Chapter. One of which has set it's prime directive to bring forth a new Golden Age of Man.

Chapter: Chrono Liberandum

Formation: Adeptus Mechanicus priests escorted by Space Marines

Background: After the events of the Horus heresy and the continual, accelerateddecline of the Imperium, this task force would be formed to attempt to seek out and recover relics of the golden age, to study them, and resurrect Mankind's might in the sector.

First Directive: Reconnaissance, Review and Recovery

The main objective. This fleet is not to liberate Craft Worlds already tainted by xeno, but to extract what’s left of the Imperium’s technology. The squadrons are not given orders to fight and eradicate the invaders, but simply buy enough time for the Adeptus Mechanicus in the platoon to locate, appraise and extract the valuable works of the Imperium. These would be brought back to Forge Worlds to replicate for the arsenal, and at the same time studied to improve upon and reverse engineer to manufacture new technology.

Second Directive: Scavenge and Assimilate

Squads are sent from the main fleet to support other chapters in their crusade. Once having driven out the Xeno infestation on the battlefield, they are sent to scour and collect any Alien technology found useful, to bring back to better understand the strategies and arms that the enemies of the imperium carry, and to attempt to learn from their technology to better our own arsenal.

What do you guys think? I'm still rather inexperienced in 40k (having read a LOT of fluff, but I think it's still not enough due to not having played any tabletop games cause I've no friends) honestly and this is almost unfiltered rambling so a lot of fine tuning, expanding and consistency checking still needed to do. But is this interesting? I kinda want to write a novel in the 40k universe with this Chapter. Has this been done before?

That won't stop him from shooting your tanks. That will stop him from dropping 6" away and blowing them up with short-range melta rules.
>>
>>54015582
>especially as they rolled well above average there.
Taufag here

Hitting on 2+ rerolling, usually all 4 shots land

Wounding on 3s on predator, usually about 3 land, but sometimes you get lucky and get 4.

With AP4 you wont get a save most of the time

Even outside of bonus melta range you're still looking at reliably doing 9-12 damage when you deep strike a commander with 4x FB.

Commanders are characters with T5 and 6W so if you position correctly you can avoid getting shot by placing units in the way and escape to keep shooting for another turn.

Aggressive Commanders are a reliable tactic and one of the best tools that Tau have in 8th.

He will fire max range meltas and finish them off with long range support across the map. 72" rail guns :/
>>
>>54015539
Deploy tanks with <18" gap between them and <9" from Table edges

Infantry <18" in front.

Nowhere to sneak in.

Homing Beacon can only be used by one unit once
>>
>>54015641
It does stop them from dropping right next to you, and at max range he'll be lukcy to ping more than ten wounds off you even with quad fusion. DESU he's picking the one outstanding unit from the tau dex and running it, its the same shit that made people run max flyrants for nids last edition-they're one of very few non-shit units they have, and they're shit at anything other than nuking heavy armour. Did he know in advance you were bringing heavy mech?

Run a battle company and watch his ~550 point suicide squad die turn 2 without any good targets, vehicles are even more rock-paper-scissors than ever before and he had a big rock to your chode scissors
>>
>>54015666
nice triples.
>>
>>54015690
With 4 hits you average 2 wounds vs a land raider, and even assuming he fails his now 6+ save, it should be pretty clear that 22 is not the average of 2*2d6 pick highest.
>>
>>54015649
I was thinking about buying not terrible quality sisters from outside of GW, but not proxies. I really want to start sister because they're a metal army.
>>
>>54015529
Here is an interesting thought: RAW there is nothing forbidding you from taking multiple Renegade Commanders in a Detachement or picking multiple Covenants with them. What if you pick a different Covenant for each?
>>
>>54015264
...and they also need new armor.

That is generally how things go when you do a complete upgrade of an armed force.
>>
>>54015750
Anything with T8 skews the average down, but most targets for that kind of tactic are T7 or less.
>>
>>54015620
They deploy 12 inches away, then move 8 inches, drop the homing beacon 1 inch away, and then the crisis suits drop 6 inches away from the beacon. Half range on meltas is 9 inches. How much bubble wrapping are you planning on doing? Because I count 36 inches there.
>>
>>54015040
>Primaris unic
Hah, I knew they were compensating for something!
>>
>>54015576
A Sisters player in my Meta had some good success with HB Retributors spamming the AoF that gives extra shooting. Lots of Retributors with Imagifiers.

Also a Celestine to tie up any enemy that would do something sneaky to his Retributors.

Otherwise, the Dominion Alpha Strike is fairly popular still. Penitent Engines are decent for their cost, especially if you have Celestine to charge in first.
>>
>>54015791
He needs to be the warlord to unlock a covenant.
>>
>>54015817
This

Dont forget that commanders have a huge base that adds another 2-3"

I dont think its feasible to get a good enough bubble wrap as space marines to avoid this tactic
>>
>>54015859
Ahh, right. There we go.
>>
>>54015817
Not sure why I included the 12 there, still groggy

What I mean is: The crisis suits threaten 24 inches from wherever the scout suits deploy at, and they deploy 12 inches from your models.
>>
>>54015881
>I dont think its feasible to get a good enough bubble wrap as space marines to avoid this tactic

Don't think in 7e mentality

10 Tacticals is 130pts. Which is 40 Conscripts and change. Plenty of meat to bubble wrap for you.

>homing beacons are deactivated if an enemy unit is within 9" of it
This has been interpreted, at least by this anonymous stranger on a lithuanian karaoke discussion conclave, that you cant drop a homing beacon within 9" of an enemy model. Thats what me and my usual opponent read as RAI, since otherwise the wording for when they're destroyed is confusing as hell-it can be deployed right next to me, and only after the opponent moves it's destroyed?

As per normal with these ass-backwards indices and their shit wording, its up to interpretation by you and your opponent on whether you can drop a beacon within 9" of an enemy model. I doubt it's intended to drop a unit with fusion out the ass an inch away, but more like drop a unit with flamers 5" next to some blobs
>>
>>54015881
>>54015961
Also, with 2" cohesion you can potentially create a pretty impressive scattered formation to cover maximum ground.
>>
>>54015994
Nope.

Homing beacon is deactivated if an enemy ends its movement within 9 inches. Read the rule.

The enemy can't end its movement within 9 inches because it's not the enemy's turn.
>>
>>54015961
>le conscript meme

No thanks, I'm not going to go buy and paint a bunch of models I dont give a shit about and dont fit into my army thematically just in case I play against another Tau player using this same tactic
>>
Between personal experiences and math and I better off bringing a Hydra or a Wyvern if my usual foes like running a single Flyrant/Hellturkey with their Gaunt/Poxwalker swarms?

Not allowed to drop within 9" of an enemy.
Deploy tanks ans men for maximum paranoid autism.
>>
>>54015994
You put them 10" away from tank, he can drop a commander 6" away from that, he's now 4" away from tank. Still as mentioned by someone above, the homing deactivates the moment the commander used it, so you spend at least 270 points total get 4 melta hits on a tank. It's reasonable, but I don't think it's game breaking.
>>
>>54016086
Read the rule dipshit.

Homing beacon doesn't give a shit if there's enemies within 9 inches. The only restriction is they drop within 6 inches of the beacon.

>>54016096

They don't have to do this. A beacon is only deactived if an enemy ends a move within 9 inches. You can put a beacon down an inch away from the enemy and it'll be there until the enemy takes a turn.

Deploy sneekums 9" from frontline, move 8, deploy beacon, then deploy crisis from beacon.

So skorcha nobz in a trukk are pretty ard in this edition right?

Ten of them get to do drive bys which cause 10d6 (35 average ) str 5 -1 ap autohits which is enough to destroy any meq or teq squad in one , as well as most vehicles barring LRs and super heavies.

While burna boyz sadly got needed into oblivion especially compared to their imperial counterparts nobz seem to have made up for it.

Scouts are troops and are more survivable, since they're T4 and can get 2+ cover saves with camo, ratlings are t2 and get 4+ cover saves. But if all you want are sniper shots, ratlings are way better.
