I kinda want to get this mentality out that having a single Riptide is "OP". It's not. They're the Tau's TEQ. It's fair if they can have one if you bring some Termies or a Land Raider. If they bring multiple and in the Wing, then yes that is pretty cheesy.

Also Kroot are shit. They're just expendable meatshields. Having a whole army oriented around them would be incredibly boring. If Tau auxiliaries had the same love that Genestealers then that would be fine.

A "fun" army to play against is something that tries to bring all the neat units into the battle in a combined arms fashion. Not just spamming any one single unit. A good Tau player would know that some well supported fire warrior unit is a cheaper and arguably better source of anti infantry fire power than the other units.

There is a box called "Talons of the Emperor" that comes with that box of 5 dudes, a box of sisters of silence, a big tank for your custodes and a custodes dreadnought. If you got that plus another box of five dudes or some of the FW Custodes you would have a nice small little army. I don't think you'd be hated, the fuckers are strong but they do cost lots of points.

You could consider picking up some support pieces like assassins too, but the main problem with Custodes at the moment is they don't have any HQ units so they need a HQ character from another imperial faction. Probably the most sensible HQ choice is an inquisitor, but you could also take a primaris psyker (its got nothing to do with primaris marines its just a regular human psyker) or a space marine or an imperial guard commander of some sort.

Against a 50 man conscript squad it gets 22d3 shots (11d3 from each gun), which is 44 shots since the average of d3 is 2.
44 shots means 36.666... Hits which means 30.555... Unsaved wounds. If you snipe out the commisar then the rest of the unit dies to battle shock. In constrast 2 storm cannons does 13.333... Wounds. Good, but not as good as the flux.

Rule question : To get the Command benefit your army needs to be of the same faction.

Riptides are fine, they are in an army that has neither psychic powers nor real CC units. For optimum strength, it's ruleset requires a gamble for Nova reactor, which has a 1/3 chance to wound the unit every single turn. Also requires the use of markerlights to maximize it's average shooting. I've seen a couple of posts of people saying the 'scour' ML option (ignores cover) is 1 marker light. It's actually 2. Twice as hard to pull off as naysayers claim.

In my experiences of playing with Riptides, the Riptide Wing was undoubtedly the poorest showing of the unit. The double attack option doesn't kill as much as you think it should and not moving a turn, to pull it off, can cost you the game. Also, you generally need to balance out every monstrous/gargantuan creature with some decent amounts of MSU units or you will eventually get worn down/shut down in the later parts of the game. Even in an army of giant robots, MSU/copious wounds still matter.

But please, don't just take my word for it. Any time another whiner about Riptides shows up, clear, empirical evidence is usually the best form of persuasion.

Painting yellow can be a pain, but there are several ways to deal with it.
Check out our lord and savior Duncan's tutorials. Thin your paint, ESPECIALLY when painting yellow, it's fine if you need 5 thin layers to get a strong color. Never do yellow over a dark basecoat. Ever. Also, if you really are having trouble, you can modify your scheme. I know an IF player who 's scheme is mostly black and dark grey at the chest, while having yellow pauldrons/heads/details.

R8 my attempt at a Primaris list.

Lots of walking obviously, Guilliman anchors the hellblasters, and dreadnoughts walking up the board. Giving them re-rolls to mitigate their -1 for moving/Hellblaster overheats. Ancient and Apothecary keep everyone alive and healthy.

Intercessors cower on home objectives or join the march as screening units depending on the mission.

Assault Termies deepstrike to assault with the chaplain helping out their -1 to hit.

Dreadnoughts rain hell on anything in range and pull shots away from the squisher shit like hellblasters.

I did my best to add some numbers for Ammo Runts. They're difficult to represent accurately, due to the possibility of rolling perfect hits rendering the Runts useless in a tiny percentage of cases, but I went with a close-enough approximation. They are generally a good, efficient upgrade to the output of a unit of Nobz/Flash Gitz, with the most notable efficiency increase understandably coming from adding Ammo Runts to units wielding weapons with lower fire-rates. Twoe ammo-runts in a unit of 5 Nobz with Kombi-Rokkits using just the rokkits will in most circumstances (As long as 2+ Nobz miss), provide the same fire-power increase that bringing two more Kombi-Rokkit Nobz would, at a fraction the cost. However, low-RoF weapons also run the risk of wasted Runts if you bring close to or more Runts than average misses, so I listed average misses for those options as well.
