Why does the ixitxachitl cleric in Out of the Abyss have the Create or Destroy Water spell? Isn't that like human clerics having a Create or Destroy Air spell?

You answered your own question, retard.
>>
>>53857216
You don't play a valor bard because you want to maximise numbers, you play a valor bard because you want to gish.
Stone sorcerer isn't going to do as much damage as any other sorcerer when maxing strength and hitting shit with cantrips and smites, but it doesn't stop people from playing them like that.
>>
>>53857235
Becuase if one gets into a situation without water senpai, would you want to suffocate if you had magic to prevent it

>Stone sorcerer isn't going to do as much damage as any other sorcerer when maxing strength and hitting shit with cantrips and smites, but it doesn't stop people from playing them like that.
If your DM does the adventuring day properly, I'd expect stone sorcerer to average more damgae, though.
Much like the valor bard averages more damgae.

This isn't maximizing numbers. This is maximizing versatility and utility in favour of having lower numbers.

That seems very situational, especially since it requires some sort of container to work. Really, how often do these things end up outside of the water? There are other first level spells that you'd think would be more useful to an intelligent, evil stingray.

Lets say I'm playing as a Kenku Tempest Cleric and I cast Thaumaturgy to make my voice three times as loud while using Mimicry to sound like a dragon, Would it make sense to:

-Change the mimicry check into intimidation

-Get advantage on my check

This situation came up today and my DM wouldn't allow me to get advantage, but would allow to change the check. I was pretty disappointed because my group is filled with murderhobos and I wanted to scare off the encounter, rather than fight it.

I'm having trouble deciding my Sorcerer's spells for level 3. I'm torn between Mage Armor, Shield, Misty Step, or Mirror Image. My other spells right now are Magic Missile, Burning Hands, and Scorching Ray. My AC is only 12 so I'm trying to figure out what would be better. I'm thinking Shield because Mage Armor would only boost me to 15 AC, while Shield puts me at 17 when active. Misty Step would allow me to teleport to a safe area, but it's expensive. Mirror Image sounds really good, but I'm not sure. I'm going to be using the Spell Points variant rule, and DM is letting me combine them with my Sorcery Points into one big pool. I also have an item that increases my Spell Points a bit more, so I have a decent chunk. Cost isn't a big deal.

Why would it make sense to do either?

It specifically cannot make the sounds have additional impact, just change the volume within reasonable levels.

I would not have allowed an intimidate check. You are using mimicry. If you roared and made an intimidate check with magic help, I would change the setup slightly (different target number maybe), but I would not change the mimicry test to an intimidate rest. That makes no sense.

Also wouldn't give advantage. That is not within what the spell does, and your description of what you did have no reason to just hand you an advantage on your check.

Sure some of those times it does nothing because he can't get up a ramp, but that doesn't make it a bad item unless every magic item needs to be boosting damage every combat.

The answer lies in your question
>>
I'm making a paladin/warlock. Specifically, I am hitting 5 or 6 paladin first, then classing into Warlock.

Paladin is oath of the ancients, so minimum level 7 overall. At level 1, I picked up shieldmaster and have been enjoying it a lot (Vuman)

I'm liking the fluff behind the new revised Warlock patron (The Celestial), so I'm leaning heavily toward that. But, I had some questions.

a) Should I pick up warcaster?
b) What level split should I consider?
c) If my DM is okay with the UA, is The Celestial a decent patron?
d) Which pact if I go to 3+ warlock? I'm leaning toward tome, right now.
>>
>>53859551
I'm hoping you roll 4d6-1 in order, otherwise you're a double pussy.
>>
>>53859603

One idea I had joshing around for a long time was a cleric detective. Using Knowledge for detecting lies and sharpening wits. Probably serves a god of justice or at least law.
>>
>>53859635
Optimised pallock is Tome for CHA shillelagh PAM bullshit, but you can't be that much of a faggot. You honestly only need 2 levels of lock, since you get a couple invocations and Eldritch Blast at that point, along with a couple short rest spell slots you can use to Divine Smite. If you're going to commit to getting a Pact Boon, then take bladelock because you should give yourself a little bit of a handicap.
>>
>>53859635
a) It's okay considering shield msater means you're not focusing damage, though consider that you could boost charisma and help people out with protection instead.
b) 3 levels of warlock, rest paladin. Grab shillelagh. 4 or 5 levels of warlock is fine too.
c) It's fucking ridiculous. A spammable healing word as a level 1 feature that doesn't disallow you from casting action spells. But if your DM uses a more sensible death save system, it's balanced.
d) Tome you dunce. Shillelagh. Get it.
>>
>>53859647
Are there people who DON'T drop 1 die?
>>
>>53859703
>>53859635
Well, to restate a) quickly:
War caster works well with booming blade. But really I think you should just focus on upping charisma for team support + the fact with shillelagh quarterstaff+shield your attacks run off of charisma.
>>
>>53859558
It adds an element of randomness to character creation.

Some people like this, because it gives them ideas about how to play their new character based on the stats.

Others prefer a more fine-tuned pitch and choose system. Allocating a set number of points to their character's stats however they wish to do so.

It's a matter of taste.

Personally I think random rolls for stats can greatly influence the kind of character you decide to play.
>>
>>53859703
>A spammable healing word as a level 1 feature that doesn't disallow you from casting action spells. But if your DM uses a more sensible death save system, it's balanced.

>>53859717
Way I've seen and done it, it's either 4d6-1 down the line, or 3d6 and place wherever. Letting people place 4d6-1 where they want basically invites min-maxing because of the innate differences between stats rolling will bring.
>>
>>53860007
I was gonna suggest to the DM I have that does 4d6 drop 1 that he make us go down the line instead of arranging them how we want.
>>
>>53860007
I like doing 4d6-1 down the line for one shots since it forces people to play different classes than they normally would to fit their weird stat lines. 3d6 just ends up way too imbalanced even in one shots. It really sucks if one guy rolls an 18 and another player doesn't have anything over 12.
>>
Playing a twillight druid with staff, scimitar and shield and daggers as back up weapons/throwing. I have a focus built into my shield and staff. In case the party gets captured I'm tempted to get a tattoo focus on one my character's hands. Good or bad idea?
>>
I had a question about how I should approach a situation with a fellow character.

About five times so far in the campaign, their character has initiated combat while the rest of the party was out of position by moving ahead while everyone else was doing something else - going through loot, searching bodies, etc. This has lead to unnecessary headaches and party damage. They were chastised each time, but last time rather than treating their javelin my character simply pulled it out, resulting in additional minor damage, as a punishment. The player in question was very upset by this and was angry I had inflicted damage to a party member on purpose. We argued over this a bit ooc and they essentially said they would continue to do this in the future.

He and the DM are new, and I don't want to be a dick and derail the campaign or ruin anybody else's fun. But I'm also not afraid of party drama and don't want to be trampled on. Am I in the wrong? Any recommendations on an approach I should take?

For real though, has anyone actually had a DM whose creatures actively try to steal your spellcasting focus, aside from being kidnapped and all your items stripped? Maybe if you become some legendary wizard with a super flashy focus then thieves may try and snatch it, but otherwise nobody is going to go after some random's necklace or voodoo doll.
>>
>>53860411

I don't think my DM really keeps track of foci. We basically do the "if the material cost has a gold amount indicated, you need the materials" rule, and that seems to be it. I still keep track of a focus, have it listed in my inventory, and try to choose something fitting for each character though.

Question on a one(two)shot idea I have:

Once ever couple months I occasionally fill in when the DM has a shit ton of work, or schedules falls apart. Its a simple one off either with there characters, or if thematically it doesn't make sense then I hand out some gimmicky prefabs. Normally its a pretty standard heist, assassinations, etc. I tend to run evil oneshots with prefabs just for a change of pace from out our normal game.

So I had an idea though at doing a horror themed one shot with the Slaadi based on Alien/The Thing. Its seems like an *obvious* setup so I assume some have tried and and I am curious how it would work. I would want it to be extremely powerful and not something you can just kill in a fight, but D&D doesn't immediately seem like it lends itself to hit/run style 'combat'.

Gut idea is: We have 5 players, so have them be low level like 4, and some other NPCs. Some how trapped in like a magic school or prison or some shit with a Red Slaad. Have them kill that Red, but an NPC is infected turns into a stronger Blue Slaad in the next Day. Then have the Blue Slaad run in and out of hiding, I would tone down its Regen and have it slowly be killed as the party/NPCs get picked off.

Just thought of it like an hour ago. Y/N?

Friends charms the target for a minute, improving their disposition to friendly and granting advantage on Charisma checks, but then drops their disposition to hostile when the spell ends. Oh, there's also the whole lucky rabbit's foot thing so you can give them something the Halfling's Lucky trait.

Also in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean folklore rabbits live on the moon so you could do something with that. Something like being able to cast Moonbeam and other spells 1/day like the Tiefling's Infernal Legacy trait. The moon also tends to be associated with shapeshifting, so you could give them an ability to shapeshift into an actual rabbit or something.

Just a few ideas for something more interesting than just taking an existing race and refluffing it.

the 10d6 is already taking rage halved into account. Remember the boots do 3x damage to the guy you land on. So if he's taking 60d6 and you're taking 10d6, your damage is already halved. Although you do bring up a point, you're supposed to just do 20d6 and then half the damage instead of halving the dice.

For kicks and giggles I went through all class abilities that refresh on short rests and converted them to refresh on long rests, increasing their resources on the assumed basis of two short rests per long rest.

The full thing can be found at https://pastebin.com/wRYbiBPd.

The big winners are, as we would probably all expect, fighters and warlocks. Monks also benefit a fair amount from the extra Ki.

The half casters change very little, while among the full casters wizards and clerics benefit the most by a considerable margin. Sorcerers and bards gain virtually nothing.

I think a game with these changes would be roughly playable (warlocks would feel a lot closer to full casters, but have absurd power spikes at the levels they gain spell slots), but a bit more editorializing would be warranted if one wanted to balance 5e entirely around abilities refreshing on long rests.

>>
>>53863864
oh they weren't isolated from other parts of the world, they just shut themselves off from the area where the pc's would be from,

the nation has an abundance of valuable resources and such that other nations don't see as valuable

it essentially boils down to that the nation was founded by a group of isekai'd individuals who invented/brought into practice a bunch of shit, like banking and paper money etc etc.

and such they were able to stabilize and generate an economy using these practices, and remember world economy won't affect nations in a D&D setting like they do in the modern world simply due to lack of effective communication or bookkeeping etc. etc.

as well as adding that they had a shitload of gold as well due to plot of the setting and were able to institute a gold standard, and considering that inflation and other such issues that would make gold standard non palatable don't / haven't happened yet so they were able to stimulate their economy even isolated.

So I want to make a ranged Battle Master fighter who is an exiled general of a far off land.

Is there any reason at all to use anything other than a hand crosssbow? Because it seems like Crossbow Mastery is far and above the best feat on earth for a ranged character.
>>
>>53864863
Three reasons.

First of all range, because a Longbow being able to attack from up to 600ft. away will basically be able to beat anyone in the best circumstances. Secondly it's pretty OP and the reason people say the CR is out of whack, don't realise that feats just make the game much harder for the DM to balance around. Third they're gay as fuck.
>>

lmao nigga with CBE you're just as effective in melee range as a GWM fighter too, and have a +2 to hit with Sharpshooter that GWM lacks.

I am concerned it is OP but based on the meat grinders the DM has thrown us in before, fuck the police.

Session report:

Since the death of the last goblin boss, Goblin Valley has been in turmoil. A half dozen or so goblins have all claimed to be the rightful heir to the boss's throne. Normally, the goblins would seek advice from their shaman to find out who Big Goblin (the local goblin diety) favored as the next boss. However, the shaman has been silent on the matter. The leader of one of the goblin factions asks the party to visit the shaman and find out why Big Goblin won't name a successor for the late boss.

After a short journey, including a minor skirmish with some goblins of less-friendly faction, the players reach the shaman. He explains that Big Goblin has been sulking in the temple basement ever since the old boss died, and refuses to talk to anyone. The players agree to go into the basement and talk some sense into him.

In the basement, the party manages to do the following:

>Give a suit of animated armor an existential crisis
>Solve a "find the safe path through the room" puzzle
>Kill Big Goblin's roomba (a gelatinous cube that roams the halls, keeping the area clean by absorbing any filth)

They meet Big Goblin, who explains that he's tired of directly influencing the tribe. He wants them to be able to govern themselves. Through a long, rambling negotiation, the party and Big Goblin agree to create a series of trials to test those who would seek the boss's throne.

The party rogue decides to go to each of the aspirants in turn, and promises each to rig the trials in that one's favor. In exchange for these promises, the rogue receives a ton of bribes (which, in total, are the result of a roll on the treasure hoard table).

Next session, we'll see how the trials turn out.

Well, it's not as bad as some people think but it's not great. You should do a STR build and Barb 2/Monk X.

The basic idea is to use the Barbarian's resistances to not really bother with AC at all, just act like a glass canon of Flurry Rage punches with Reckless Attack for advantage. Drunken Master would probably work best. For race I'd recommend Mountain Dwarf because you'll be pretty MAD.

14(16), 14, 14 (16), 9, 13, 8 is what I'd recommend after Dwarf Racials. You'll have 15 AC which is pretty bad, but you'll live with being able to hit and run plus resistance.

Less an issue with Blacklock and more a multiclassing issue. However, it sucks that they didn't buff it with the synergy since a Bladelock (going Hexblade patron) is still the weakest version of an already low caster.
>Remove/keep prone
Keep. Other than a damage spike, burning 1 of 2/3/4 spell slots is huge for the Warlock, especially when those spells can deal a hefty amount of damage by themselves (and often at a safer range or with more utility).
>>
>>53865813
I'd make it 2d8 +1d8 per level above 1 like Paladin. Keep the rest of it.
>>
>>53865974
It already follows the paladin math exactly, just stated differently. It's 1d8 + an extra d8 per slot level, so level 1 = 2d8, level 2 = 3d8, and so on.

Increase the damage back to 2d8 per level, keep the warlock spell slot requirement, expand the prone option to maybe three options you can choose from (knock prone, speed to 0, disable reactions?).

Doesn't that become a problem with multiclassing?

The level 5 requirement is a bigger hurdle than the 1-3 level dip it was before but people might still go Warlock 5/Paladin X or something for more spell slots.

What really needs to happen is that Warlocks get more spell slots. The damage is fine, it's just that they can use it only twice per short rest through using up literally all their resources.

Can you even use the help action for passive perception? It's passive for a reason, it's your ability to notice things when you aren't actively searching for anything specific.

Allthough passive perception has its flaws, in this case it's the DM's lack of understanding of the rules rather than the game's fault.

Suppose you have a portal to another world, world 2.

While you're in world 2, time in world 1 is standing still. So you can pass through the portal, spend years in world 2, then come back at the exact second you left.

What happens when you have two people - one passes through the portal to world 2, effectively freezing world 1?

Presumably, the person now in world 2 never seems the other arrive, because the second they were on the other side of the portal, they were frozen indefinitely.

But if the person in world 1 now goes back through the portal, when do they come out in relation to the timeframe of the person who stayed in world 2? Does it create a different timeframe like a parallel universe?

And what if they attach themselves to each other by rope and one stands on one side of the portal and one on the other? What happens to the rope?

I know not this feel for I am surely a shit DM.

I'm trying to run the starter set as it's my first time DM'ing and shit's taking forever, there's no cool shit to discuss, no plots to unravel at these low levels. I'm trying to figure out ways to spice it up, before I lose my players' interest.

They're actually really good players, despite being first timers. (They negotiated a sort of deal with the Nothic in the Redbrand hideout, and managed to not only skip straight to Glasstaff, but catch him as he was attempting to escape, prompting a hurried combat sequence where he was backed into a corner and forced to blow all his level 2 spells without a chance to retaliate.)

But I feel they're getting frustrated with all this kiting. Glasstaff just wants to escape, and I play him as such, but the frustration from my players is real. They don't want to kill him, in case he has useful information, but they just might because he keeps running. It got to the point where we just kind of called the session off right before they were able to finish him one way or the other because one of my players got too frustrated/ it was so late.

I want to bring them back in. I don't know how. They were so excited at first but the lengthy encounters with little payoff is starting to get to them, I think. I've told them it gets better at higher levels, but that doesn't solve the issues they're having right now.

How can I spice it up, /5e/?

You could just say that time in World 1 (W1) merely appears to stand still. It's just moving absurdly slowly from a W2 perspective. And you're not coming back to W1 at the exact second, but a microscopic amount of time later.

Assuming First Traveler (FT) is an immortal who spends 1 million years in W2, and it amounts to a second in W1. Second Traveler (ST) can jump through the portal half a second after FT. They'll end up in W2 500,000 years after FT went through.

You can't have a literal infinity of time passing in W2 while someone stays in W1. It can't be forever. Because the portal either lead to an amount of time relative to both worlds, updated every second, in which case the scenario I described happens, or to an absolute time frame, in which case ST pops into W2 at the exact moment FT does, despite ST jumping in later.
>>
>>53867562
Not him, but the guy that first posted, but I'm having a hard time prepping, I feel. I set up the maps, meticulously place tokens and notes so I don't flub it when players do the unexpected, but I still find myself spilling my spaghetti when players ask for minute details that aren't listed anywhere. I stammer and go "uh" and "um" a lot. I feel it detracts from their experience a tad. Of course, there was that one player who, not two minutes in, went and interrogated the barkeep that I hadn't fleshed out, just to see me flounder. Had a good laugh at that, we did.

But still, I just want them to get into the world. They play with an air of outsiders looking in, and I want them to really get into the minds of their characters. I dunno, maybe I'm overthinking it, maybe it will get better soon. Hopefully, by the time they do some side quests and level before Thundertree, they'll be a bit more into it. As it is, I have a hard time pinning them down to start a session, even. We schedule one day a week, and even on that day, we always seem to start an hour late, and before we know it, it's 2AM and everyone needs to go to bed.
>>
>>53867733
Overly prepping also isn't the best, bro. You just gotta learn how to wing it and invent details on the fly. This does take practice though. It's just a matter of being comfortable and confident in just making stuff on the fly.
Say it with enough confidence and the players will just believe you. Also remember it's your world, you can do whatever you want with it, you should be empowered to change/modify/keep whatever suits you.

Yeah, the more you do it the more you ease into it and will find it easier going.

Why does Glasstaff keep running if he has no spells left and will get pelted with ranged attacks as soon as he turns his back? He's a coward, so he'd probably surrender, no?

And it's not like there's no payoff. Glasstaff has some magic items with him, and the Nothic is hiding some cool loot in his hole in the ground. hold up, If I play a tiefling moon druid with the ua spikes feature, that carries over to any of my forms, and with autograpple from stuff like octopi and giant constricter snakes

I'd do something like "Time bleeds through the portals, the area within 50 ft of each portal speeding up or slowing down to match the speed of it's world."

Or just ignore it and hope the players don't notice.

It would be a lot easier to simply say that rather than completely stopping time it makes it some arbitrarily higher number faster, like 1351^9999 faster.

If the feature requires a physical trait such as a minotaur's horns you lose it on shapeshifting.

Guess I'll make one.

Oh, just read the original post
If the DM's fucking about that then it's up to them
But RAI if you had the feat and then shapeshifted it wouldn't carry over.

STR if you want to go with Greatswords.

CHA for anything with onehanded or versatile weapons.

If your DM allows you to multiclass then go Stone Sorcerrer.

I liked them as giant Irish people.

Now they are just giant hippy-Jews.

are we doing it wrong or are rogues OP?

They can go in stealth mode after each attack, even when they are in a room with other people? People who have seen them before? Yesterday I had to stab one of my players' character with a spear and just leave it in to bloody see the guy...
