Is Manny the most powerful (mortal) mage in Tamriel? If not, who is?

>>53853599
Depends on the weekend. If threads are started on Friday we will get two in on the weekend, the second one started some tine sunday. If it's started on saturday there will probably only be one.

This isn't a bad thing, a few weeks (months)? ago there was a lot more traffic but we seemed to be getting /tesg/ people for some reason, maybe because ESO. I have no clue.

>>53856591
No, I am considering it though, since there's a Vvardenfell to go back to. Still I have never played any mmos except for 2007 runescape so I have no clue if it is even worth it.

Their in-game books are shit from what I have read, and there seems to be a fair amount of anachronisms and lore-butchery due to ignorance or laziness. I would need some convincing before I hopped on the eso wagon

Probably the latter. It shows how old the dwemer were, their mastery over the land and creatures, even their potential understanding of the thu-um or the relation of the thu-um and tonal architecture. But uesp doesn't really list any sources so I guess it's there to be cool.

Ive never played it, but Ive kept up with the lore. Its meh. The only real appeal is being able to see previously unexplored parts of Tamriel, but the game really doesn't take advantage of these locations much.

The real shame of ESO is that thanks to it we will probably never have a main series game or expansion to one that focuses on Molag Bal or Coldharbour.

Some of the rituals of the Forsworn and Hagravens in Skyrim seems somewhat blood magicy. These are never really elaborated on however, other then them being some sort of old magic.

Underking > Mannimarco

Wish I understood why they opposed each other though. Maybe because one is trying to die, the other is trying to conquer death?
>>
>>53859059
That's kind of what mankar camoran did but I think he had help from Dagon
>>
>>53860613
Because Underking wants to protect the Empire, and because Mannimarco is an evil elf who wants to become a God. Naturally they would be opposed.
>>
>>53860603
It was my understanding that they were mimicking Lorkhan in some manner and the magic they were using was influenced by that.

I could be wrong, as I'm pretty sure I read that here, but at least with the briarheart have some strong symbolism leaning in that direction.

It's hard to say, since we don't know what religious practices they follow. However, we do know some ritual phrase related to creating Briarhearts:

"Heart of thorn... bones of the wild... in life, Forsworn...
...rise from death, Blood of our Blood."

Personally to me it suggests a relationship to Hircine or nature in general. Some unofficial stuff presents them as like Native Americans - I hate it since it's done so shallowly, but could mske for inspiration on actual lore.

>>53863041
Wouldn't you if your dad fucked a mound of earth?
>>
>>53863258
We also know that Faolin the Red Eagle was the first Brairheat, and it allowed him to take the role of the Rebel in the ceremony, and that the ceremony involving ripping their hearts out has enough connection to Lorkhan than even Neloth thought it could be connected somehow
>>
>>53863258
>Some unofficial stuff presents them as like Native Americans
They're supposed to be Picts, not Amerindians. Its supposed to contrast the British/French thematics of the Bretons and the Druids of Galen
>>
>>53863398
The forsworn do have some Aztec undertones along with classical pict barbarian ones. Namely the shape of their weapons and how they rip out the heart of some people because of stuff related to their gods. Other then that they are pretty much just Picts though.
>>
>>53863258
>I hate it since it's done so shallowly

Yeah the Forsworn are critically underdeveloped as a faction. Makes you wonder why they even bothered to include them, they are just Reach Bandits.

Compare them to something like the Ashlander tribes, it really shows how Bethesda has changed.
>>
>>53863550

>>53863550
Yeah, you only really get minor depth on them from reading a few scattered lorebooks, but otherwise there's not much on them. Which is a shame, because the Reachmen are an interesting people both culturally and geographically. They are Bretons who migrated back closer to their Nedic homeland, and mingled with both the Nords and the Orsimer. They're culture should be some sort of mixture of Traditional Nordic belief, Orsimer Malacath worship, and the Dirennei Elven Pantheon. They were the first Manmer to be encountered by the Nords, Live in what is essentially the lost fringe territory of the Rourken Dwemer, were once able to expel the Allessian Empire from the Reach, and were the major military force that Chulacain fought against before their loss against Hjalti at Hrol'Dan.

For a people that supposedly had such a presence in the lore, and would no doubt have an interesting culture, religion, and development over time, there's essentially nothing on them and in Skyrim they just amount to a disorganized force of pelt-wearing, axe-dragging daedra worshipers! And for some reason they keep attacking the local Orc Strongholds despite the fact it was supposedly the Orcs who taught them hedge-magic in the first place!

They could've been cool, instead they're just as bland and watered down as the rest of the bloody province
>>
>>53863861
>and mingled with both the Nords
Not this shit again.
>>
>>53864060
I find it extremely doubtful a culture of people can exist in a location without "mingling" with the more native inhabitants of said location.
>>
>>53864161
Even when they hate each others' guts?
>>
>>53864184
Especially if they hate each others' guts.
Take their women, rape them as much as you can, rape their men while you're at it. Hell, children I guess if you're into that. A goat is fine too.
Doubt they would use contraception.
>>
>>53863778
By Arctus I mean his previous incarnation, Arnand the Fox. As in, he was a god before Zurin was even born.
Note, Zurin is also said to bare heavy connections to Magnus as well. When it comes to things like this you have to throw personal logic out the window and realize, that these aren't normal people we are dealing with. While Zurin is a part of Talos that doesn't mean he is literally the substance of Talos. Consider how Orkey, Arkay, and Xarxes are all the same thing.

Mind you this is all just a theory of mine, anyways.
>>
>>53864184
>>53864161

>>53864902
>Some say they are ghosts, waiting to be laid to rest. Others, that they are all that remains of the Snow Elves who once ruled Skyrim
>Master Sadren Sarethi posits that Wispmothers are a necrologic state, a type of lich-dom developed by a now-forgotten First Era culture. Under his theory, these are no mere ghosts - they are a cult of powerful sorceresses who achieved eternal life through undeath
http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_Wispmother
>For generations, the people of Morthal have told whispered tales of the Pale Lady, a ghostly woman who wanders the northern marshes, forever seeking her lost daughter. Some say she steals children who wander astray, others that her sobbing wail strikes dead all those who hear it. But behind these tales may lie a kernel of truth, for ancient records speak of 'Aumriel', a mysterious figure Ysgramor's heirs battled for decades, and finally sealed away

The only thing you could use to date it is that going by the Cyrodiilic-sounding name of the Governor, it probably was at some time while Skyrim was part of the Empire.

It's a bit of a different issue. I can't find anything that even resembles a Dunmer temple. Or any kind of architecture that isn't somewhat generic. That may be alright in the Imperial areas of my campaign, but the Dunmer areas are all kinda flavorless.

Only thing I have on hand is a quick map i made based off Riften, though it's kind of bad. Still, if you're interested I might have it lying around.
Fair warning, it's more or less MS Paint levels of quality.

The closest thing I can think of outside of that is Scrollhammer stuff, but that's pretty barebones. I've been meaning to cook up a pack of icons for that, but I'm a lazy bastard.
Plus that's tokens, not maps, so it might not be what you're looking for.

If all else fails, try just flying up over some Morrowind buildings and take screenshots while looking straight down. That might work with a bit of editing.

What are you going to be using it for? Running or planning a campaign?

Everything is done.
Only some of the potential maps are missing or at least unsatisfying.
I've designed countless of maps (aka stolen and changed or just did something myself), but some of them just seem bland in comparison to others and I can't find anything online that could help me out here.

I would've been fine for it if they'd used them as an excuse for variety, but you only ever see them around Markarth, with an outpost towards Solitude. And Skyrim is a game that as a whole I feel needs more variety than it has.
>>
>>53878007
Just fan conjecture, I think. There's no concrete evidence connecting the two aside from the Emperor referring to the Agent as 'his champion' and us having no idea what happened to the Eternal Champion.

Fun fact, your Daggerfall character gets a randomly generated backstory. Some of it can actually be a little interesting, if not good for actual lore.

The Daggerfall Chronicles gives different birth dates for the Agent and Eternal Champion, the latter being five years older.
And many of the generative backgrounds >>53882570 this anon mentioned heavily imply Bethesda did not intend for the Agent to be the considered the EC (though when it comes to roleplaying, these backgrounds are really just suggestions).

While obviously Bethesda doesn't have the final say in how you decide to play your character, it is clear that, canonically, the Agent and EC aren't intended to be the same person.
This said, I think I remember hearing somewhere that Bethesda did originally plan to allow you to import your character from Arena into Daggerfall, but the function was scrapped.

Hoarding knowledge is not the same as having knowledge, and having knowledge is not the same as understanding it.
Consider the difference between owning a copy of The Phenomenology of Spirit, having read The Phenomenology of Spirit, and then actually understanding what's in The Phenomenology of Spirit. And then again, even if you reach understanding that doesn't necessarily mean you believe it.

Herma-Mora is a great example of the Princes as beings of concept.
Mora doesn't gather secrets for the sake of learning or understanding, he does it for the secrets themselves. The nature of a secret or piece of information doesn't really matter, just the possession of it.
That isn't to say Princes can't act in indirect ways, or with goals, but they don't really function like mortals when it comes to what they value and why they seek it.

Sanguine doesn't indulge in revelry for physical pleasure, he does it because revelry itself is what he desires. Hircine usually won't care who is being hunted or how it's done, just that a proper hunt is taking place.

Princes are weird, and this probably doesn't explain all they do this also has to with with how they're written, but it's important to remember that they're fundamentally amoral and immortal. Their motivations are strange.

Prison break in Black Marsh.
Either play as prisoners on the run, or play as mercenaries paid to bring the escapees to justice.

During the chaos of the Arnesian War, Symmacus was killed in combat near Mournhold. But though a memorial service has held after the defeat of Jagar Tharn, his actual body was never found.
On his deathbed, a veteran has confessed to stealing the corpse and hiding it in an old crypt, with intent to blackmail the Ra'athim family for its return. But with the chaos of the war and the death of several of his accomplices, the plan never bore fruit.
Either play as adventurers hired by King Helseth to find and return his father's remains, or as opportunists taking the chance to secure the body and follow the veteran's plan to hold it for ransom.

Alinor is awash with internal strife between extremist groups like the Beautiful and the Trebbite Monks. Recently rumours of revolt have been abundant near Firsthold, troubling non-Altmer with business interests there. A Redguard merchant league hires the players to protect their interests in the city.

Conflicts between two rival Witch Covens has escalated into outright combat. Turns out a coven from the Wrothgarians has been displaced by Orcs, and in turn they're trying to oust the Skeffington Witches from their ritual grounds deep in Skeffington Woods. Employment opportunities present themselves.

Some dude wants some thing that's in some kind of dungeon. Go find it.

Hello /tgesg/, and welcome to my first official announcement since mantling Seht.

We know that you have been waiting patiently for the Inhabitants of Tamriel to be reworked, and in order to do so I introduced the "Scroll of X" concept (A temporary, smaller booklet-sized release format containing a chapter of the IoT and some extra goodies) in order to get content out to you, /tgesg/ legion, faster, for I love you.

And now it is with great pleasure that I can announce that the team has completed the Scroll of Beasts, containing the rules for the common, and some uncommon beasts and pests of Tamriel, along with some rules of how to reap the rewards of surviving your encounters with them! The PDF can be found in the UESRPG Link compendium in the OP.

The next scroll slotted for release is the Scroll of Undead, which will contain the rules for the undead monstrosities of Tamriel, and perhaps something not entirely unrelated to that...

Putting aside how fucking horrifying that sounds, I'm pretty sure spiders don't have hides.

Also, it's kind of a shame that there's stats for giants, but not mammoths.

Either way, the looting and survival crafting stuff is very cool. It would be especially useful for something like that prison break idea mentioned above.
I guarantee that every time players are allowed to skin or harvest organs from bodies, there's only a matter of time until someone asks what the rules are for flaying a sentient being. I just finished a GURPS campaign were a few characters had a bit of a thing for collecting pieces of dead people.

To be stupidly serious, there was no hints of it. We don't even have any examples of humans liking Khajiit in that way, so where would they get the idea for catgirls? I don't recall any Khajiit-skin usage in Morrowind, where you think their status as slaves would make that more common. Even in Skyrim enemies say 'you'll make a fine rug, cat!' so most people would assume they'd focus on the skin as a whole.

I'd rather think of it as a joke on the part of the lore-writers, but if you want to imagine your cute Breton witch waifu getting embarrassed about getting requested to wear cat ears, you do have a basis for it.

The campaign is set up in the Third era and focuses mainly on Sotha Sil and the Clockwork City, because until the DLC for ESO hits, it's an open playing field of Headcanon.
Not that any of my players know anything about the Clockwork City. Right now, they think they're on a normal adventure campaign and that will stay that way until the plot is revealed.

I miss better representation of Daedra worshipping cultures. Morrowind delivered on that, but it's something I generally miss in the series.

It's clear that Daedra worship is rather widespread in Tamriel. Cults and covens dot the land, and several cultures have Daedra incorporated into their pantheons. It's clear that even though the Daedra are amoral, otherworldly entities, a lot of people still find good reason to worship them.

Which makes it such a shame that the games very often, and especially in the case of the newer titles, go a long way in pushing a good/evil dichotomy between Aedra and Daedra. The games simplify everything when it comes to execution and implementation, but it sets a president that is worrying.

It's such a shame that for certain Princes, it's almost hard to pinpoint why someone would even worship them. Luckily a lot of the textual sources, and some quests, provide us with sufficient insight into some Princes, but it's a topic that would be nice to see given more depth.

Sure, there's a cult that worships Vaermina and does sleep-related stuff, but it would be nice if we were given more insight into what they really believe, and why they worship her.
>>
>>53902709

I sampled a bunch of skeleton noises together and then set it as ringtone for my boss.
>>
>>53910564
Anon, it may be that I don't know the lore as well as you, but as far as I can tell accepted daedra worship is the exception rather than the rule. The Dunmer have it, the Khajiit have it (alongside Aedra), and the Aylieds had it to some degree, but otherwise most cultures do not incorporate daedra into their pantheons - it's either Aedra, ancestor deities, or the Hist.

That aside, do I wish daedra worship even in lands where it's not widespread or is taboo was better handled? Yeah, I don't like the good/evil dichotomy much either - it's a good rule of thumb, but shades of grey are always nice. Skyrim didn't even have that many cults or cultists involved, so it became even more just a personal choice of the player, and usually one that was neutral or outright evil.

The short answer is that the story became less important, as Bethesda became more concerned with creating a fun sandbox than a fun RPG experience. Could argue it's not as much a change in quality as direction.

>>53910850
I get your point, especially since the Oblivion cults could get a bit generic, but hear me out: Skyrim had some admirable creativity to their daedric quests, but it also annoyed me how you could just stumble onto them by accident. You could start Dagon's quest by finding a dagger piece, Meridia's quest by finding her stone-thing, or Vile's and Bal's just by taking on a seemingly harmless quest to fetch a dog or check a house. Dawnstar you get involved just by visiting Dawnstar and talking to people.

And the most annoying part of that is that I actually really liked Namira's cult in Skyrim, since it was actually made up of people from Markarth and took advantage of the mechanics that would replace dead characters, like the merchant lady. It was a cult that actually felt like a cult, not a gaggle of people gathered around a statue. And they only did that once - only other Daedric prince I know of with a cult off the top of my head in Skyrim is Peryite, and we know how that goes. They could have done much better cults than Oblivion, but they barely took advantage of it.

>>
>>53911382

>>53911395
I'd have to argue otherwise that the daedric cults in Skyrim worked pretty well. I think you're confusing cults for daedric presence, and for cults there simply weren't that many of them (justified though). One of the towns is presumably a secret daedric cult (Rorikstead I think?), but there's only three real daedric cults otherwise: Namira's cult, which was handled well, the Mythic Dawn remnant, who is a single guy that is crazy, and then Boethiah's cult, who I think were handled well enough.
We do have other worshippers here and there (Aranea at the Azura shrine, Sheogorath's quest starts because one of the Isle residents comes looking for him). What little cult presence was in I think was handled okay. I think that also shows there's not a lot of cult presence in Skyrim. Boethiah is justified as being close to the Morrowind border and that's about it.

The Dunmer worship Deadra, the Khajiit have them in their pantheon, the Orsimer worship Malacath alone, the Ayleids worshipped Meridia, and the Reachmen revere them. Breton and Redguard covens, found all around the Illiac Bay, also deal with them. I'd imagine the same to be true with the many cults found across Tamriel.
Some of the first words in the 1st Ed Pocket Guide are "The 8 Invocations and 16 acceptable Blasphemes", the latter of course referring to the deviant but tolerated Daedra worshippers.
I'm not trying to say Daedra worship is the norm, but it's far from rare or unheard of.

>The short answer is that the story became less important, as Bethesda became more concerned with creating a fun sandbox than a fun RPG experience.

This sounds like bullshit. If they wanted a fun sandbox then why do the guilds all have narrative driven questlines? Bethesda just realizes most of the narratives in Skyrim were shit, so they are just playing it off like they were pretending to be retarded.
>>
>>53913587
Also the way the game practically shoves you towards the main quest in skyrim. Morrowind felt more open in that regard.
In skyrim everything seems urgend, the world depends on it.
In MW the start is much more slow going, allowing to sandbox "better".
Imo.

You are forced into guild questlines too. You cant even walk around Riften without starting the thieves guild questline, as opposed to actually having to seek them out in Oblivion. And you have to start the College of Winterhold to progress in the main quest.

If beth was trying to make a sandbox with Skyrim, they did a fucking terrible job.

Yes because I've seen everything Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim has to offer, and my machine crashes Daggerfall by driving it too damn fast.

As a free to player, it's just fine. Lore inconsistencies were more or less marked out in DLC, as it feels like they got actual writers for those portions.

Likewise, I like a lot of the new characters a hell of a lot more than the ones I run into in Skyrim.

Main quest is kind of railroaded but the game has expanded so much by this point that it's not really mandatory to play endgame

I can only guess, but the best answer I can think of is that Bethesda is reluctant to completely move away from RPG elements, Maybe they aren't quite sure what to do instead, maybe they feel there'd be a fan backlash. But it's pretty obvious they put less effort into the narrative elements, especially compared to Morrowind, or in the case of Fallout, to Fallout 1, 2, or even NV - but they are putting some effort into making exploration and dungeon crawling feel rewarding, and to make it feel like you always have something you could do.

>>53913787
But in Skyrim you can take on just about anything from the beginning - in Morrowind you almost have to take the time to gain experience and get involved in the world before you can do the main quest. Skyrim has a false urgency to their main quest, but they make it abundantly clear that you never have to follow it if you don't want to and can go any which way you want, and can start anything at any time, and don't even really need the proper skills or knowledge to do most things.
>>
>>53914170
This might be an odd thing to ask out of the blue, but in my latest skyrim game the fabricant Millisecond guy appeared in the sleeping giant Inn for the beginning of wheels of lull but he's acting as if I had already gone through the mines and he's not starting the quest. How would I go about fixing this
>>

Bethesda really should consider hiring outside authors to write a few books for the franchise that expand the lore and fill the holes they can't be arsed to fill.

Ok few questions I want to ask, all basically about establishing the possibility of argonian pirates.

First, argonians have no problem switching between fresh and salt water, right? So at sea and up rivers or lakes, if you want to do anything underwater it's handy to have an argonian around, right? Saves you money on underwater breathing magic. For pirates especially, if you have a few argonians you can loot a boat even after you've sunk it.

Second, I imagine bosmer and khajiit are the top two of tree climbing, but argonians would be pretty good at it as well, right? They have claws too, if not as good as khajiit do, and they could even have gripping pad hands as part of their bag of lizardlike qualities? If they have scales instead of skin they probably need something just to bump their hands up to the same gripping ability as the other races, anyway. Given that the Hist made them to be their servants, and the Hist are trees, they'd want argonians to be able to climb around on them, right? So, what I'm getting at is, on sailing ships, argonians would probably be pretty good at climbing up out of the water onto the deck and scrambling up the masts and so on. Their tails are probably long and muscular enough to even wrap around things up there and hold on better.

And finally, it'd make sense, like, economically? Culturally? I mean, there's a long history of argonian slavery. Escaped or rebellious slaves would produce a lot of potential pirates, either forming their own bands of ocean raiders or joining existing crews, as they did IRL.

Does that all check out? I was thinking of trying to run a game set down around the southeastern shores of tamriel, and a bunch of lizard pirates would be cool. Though if all that applies I'd guess the imperial navy'd recruit a lot of argonians as well? There's possibilities, anyway.
>>
>>53919391
>A very successful enterprise of bandits and thieves had long been exploiting the swamplands of southeastern Tamriel, a convenient location to the riches of the Empire, where one could disappear without recourse. The coastline along the east of Topal Bay had become notorious for acts of piracy, and in 1E 1033, the Empress Hestra demanded the head of the most infamous of the brigadiers, "Red" Bramman.

>After many an unsuccessful battle in the Bay, the Imperial Navy discovered the pirate-king's means of escaping capture: a narrow, winding river which emptied into the Bay near Soulrest, its mouth screen by dense thickets of mangroves. The Imperial Fleet followed the course deeper into the heart of Black Marsh than any non-Argonian had ever been before. They eventually caught Bramman in his bandit kingdom not far from what is now called Blackrose, and took his head for the Empress. More importantly, they provided the first reliable accounts of the true culture of Black Marsh.

>The Argonians in the interior swamps of Black Marsh were skittish, and little wonder, as the contact they had with men from the outside was from the like of Bramman and other brigands. Imperial civilization was, to them, rape, pillage, and slavery. As the Cyrodiils pushed deeper into their land, trying to settle it along the pirate routes, they encountered stronger and more violent resistance with each incursion. Once the pirate menace was dealt with, the First Empire was generally content to leave Black Marsh to its native inhabitants.

>>
>>53919553

>>
>>53919475
I kinda like how the Imperial and Argonian relations weren't just 'ooga booga taking our native land' or 'let's just massacre the savages wot wot.' It's Argonians thinking non-Argonians are shithead pirates and defending themselves, and the Imperials ended up leaving because fuck Black Marsh.

>>53919553
As far as I understand, he represents the Empire, and perhaps a general human spirit - I think he's supposed to have mantled Shezzar or something anyway.
>>
>>53919475

That doesn't really answer the question of whether argonian pirates are a thing, except in that specific place and time period. The native argonians who are still mostly doing their own thing would have no reasons to leave their homes (attacking intruders on the water doesn't really count as piracy), and pirates generally didn't operate too close to their original homes anyway. Actual argonian pirates would probably be mostly "foreign" argonians who've adopted sailing/war methods and technology from men and mer. Black Marsh argonians wouldn't be familiar with deep water vessels. Their areas of activity would be around the border coasts and the imperial coastal settlements, such as there were.

Isn't there a Soul Cairn of some sort? I know that Mannimarco was involved in the creation of black soul gems (and there's that ritual in Oblivion), so they obviously existed before him, and I believe Arkay was (at least in myth) said to separate souls enough for white soul gems as a response - so they must have existed before even that, and were common enough for mages to be making widespread use of them. I wouldn't be surprised if they were actually magically created - perhaps an aspect of Mysticism?

Then again, I can't remember where I read any of that, so take it with a grain of salt.

I want there to be a town out in the Soul Cairn, or even a bigass city of souls that have just decided that with all the time and resources in the world to just go ahead and do things. Like Jiub.
>>
>>53921828
To get you a half-serious answer at least, if not the best one - white souls are the souls of animals and other 'simpler' creatures, whereas black souls are 'larger' and usually belong to creatures and people with a complex consciousness.
>>
>>53922333
Apparently Falmer have white souls or something, right? Even though they have societies and build tools, homes, armor, and all that. And goblins and others like that, as well. I don't really get what makes them different enough from the black soul races that merits them having white souls instead.

Talos is the 'Hero-God of Mankind,' sort of the pinnacle of Man if you will. Not only is he a figure to represent the greatest potential of a man, but also man's own connection and pathway to divinity. Historically there have been many hero cults dedicated to great men (especially amongst the Nords) but Talos is THE hero, as fullfilled as a hero can possibly be, in fact he is the patron god of questing heroes themselves, literally the hero of heroes. He has achieved anything anyone else has done, and more, hence why the Nords love him so much.
As is already implicit he is the champion of all mankind. A representation of every undertaking humanity has ever taken. In this he is a revival, of man's original protector gods (Shor, Shezarr) who died in mythic times.
Not only this but he is also often seen as the spiritual likeness of the Empire itself, it's soul. As said before Talos is the connection between man and divinity. Whereas Akatosh is the Patron god of the Empire, Talos, the Dragonborn, is the stand in between the earthly Empire and the divine Akatosh, or in other words, the covenant. Many Nords even claim that it was Talos, not Akatosh, who banished Dagon during the Oblivion Crisis.

With all this said, it really shouldn't come as a surprise that his worship is far more personal and charismatic than that of the other Eight Divines. He is most forthright recognized as a benevolent 'God of War and Governance,' ensuring the the continued stability of civil and just society within Tamriel.

They definitely are, just read The Infernal City.

>“So what did he figure it was?”
>“A big chunk of rock, shaped like a top. They could see buildings on the rim. The ship’s wind-caller didn’t like it. Quit the minute they got into port and left town, fast, on a horse.”

>“Said he felt something out in the deep water, a movement of some kind. So, yes, he’s crazy and the An-Xileel are irritated by him, especially Archwarden Qajalil, so he was dismissed. But then there were the reports from the sea, and the Organism sent out some exploratory ships.”

I think sentience? The Falmer are capable of building tools yes, but they only ever 'just survive'. I think sentience, in the sense of Black Souls, means they don't just survive. They create. The falmer never build cities, just squat in encampments in Dwemer ruins while Black Soulgem races continue to build forts, buildings, and entire cities. They constantly add more, leaving a physical mark on Tamriel.
>>
>>53929430
>>53923467

Well, men and mer are descended from Ehlnofey, who are in turn descended from Aedra, right? Perhaps black souls are souls that have aedric heritage, and still have some sort of dormant connection to aetherius, whereas white souls come from somewhere else, just arising naturally from the world or something? That would explain why black souls provide more power.

I think it's unclear with the Falmer whether the original snow elves' souls degenerated while they were alive, or if it was a generational thing where their children stopped being born with black souls.
>>
>>53929807
I think that it was degeneration. The point of Nirn was to challenge and overcome the trials of mortal life and ascend to something greater. I theorize that the spark mortals possess is what drives them to go futher and in turn the actions of mortals who seek to overcome reinvigorate the spark that drives them.

When the Falmer stopped, they lost the spark as well. Echos of their sentience may still exist(taking slaves, building tools, and cultivating chitin), but it's only ever just enough to get by.
>>

Those were some portraits I made for my players.

I made a storytime thread >>53932523

I didn't write down most of the details though, just wanted to get the point across.

The plot involved the Knahaten flu, in my game it was created by an Argonian necromancer, who was inspired by the Thrassian plague created by the Sloads.
The Argonian necromancer (Lukiul) grew old, his magic couldn't keep him alive for much longer. He manipulated the Hist trees to create fake egg brothers, clones of himself, with pieces of his own soul. He wanted a younger body to host his soul.
I don't know how lore friendly this is, I just thought it was cool.

Whenever a clone died, that piece of Lukiul's soul would be taken by a hist tree, and the Argonian player could lick it to gain that soul, and some of it's memories.

Eventually the party was separated, I had a session where the Argonian player voiced one of the clones to trick the party into thinking there was going to be a reunion. When the reunion actually happened, they killed each other.

My favourite theory is that they produce a limited quantity of hist sap, or a close enough substitute, to tide the infant over until they can be brought to a real hist tree.

Given the argonians' facial anatomy, their infants probably don't suckle. But the babies could press or squeeze on there to get it out and lick it up. There are similar enough arrangements in some RL animals. For convenience there would probably be some particular point where it's easy for the baby to get it without having to move their head around. May or may not resemble what we're familiar with as mammals exactly.

Then once you have basic functionality you add on the size and shape for the same reasons men and mer have them that way.
>>
>>53934492
It's actually explained.

They have to nurture their children outside of Argonia, so they have boobs. In Black Marsh, they do not get boobs when growing up there.

It's a genetical modification by the Hist according to the lifestyle of that specific Argonian.

Probably makes them look more like other races they're supposed to be associating with. Could be the Hist were still working off of a humanoid template from the last kalpa.
>>
>>53934857

The idea that it's some Hist PR thing makes a decent enough amount of sense. Men and mer are likely to treat things that look like themselves better than something that they'll confuse for an animal, and similar sexual dimorphism would be part of that. If you assume the Hist can't make argonians just look fully like men/mer, the way argonians are depicted in most of the games fits, since pushing their faces further towards humanlike would probably put them in an uncanny valley sort of territory. It also sort of explains why all the really weird argonian variants that get hinted at in lore tidbits are only found deep inside black marsh.

That's why I support the idea myself - if the Hist are basically working to get bits of information, why wouldn't they want a race that could fit in well with the outside world? The point you make about uncanny valley stuff is an interesting one - I just figured it was because they were twisting Black Marsh lizards to look more human or something.

The only problem is really that it doesn't explain why the Argonians were so isolationist for much of their history if that was the case. And it still doesn't explain why we don't see Khajiit variations, since the main Khajiit we see wasn't 'created to fit in.'

I have a lore question thats been bugging me. If most souls go to the dreamsleeve to be recycled, but some of them are taken by the Deadra, Shor, ect, are there new souls being created somehow to replace those that aren't recycled? Is there the potential for a future apocalyptic scenario where most of the souls in existence are in various realms and only a few are left on Mundus?
>>
>>53935380

Well, in the khajiit case, it's possibly their own choice. I mean, if you're an intelligent housecat or huge fuckoff tiger or something, where are you going to choose to travel and live? Elsweyr, where everyone knows what you are and there's probably furniture and so on in your size, or are you going to travel elsewhere and get treated like an animal and have people make you sleep in a stable or scream at you or something? The humanoid khajiit are the ones who travel elsewhere because everywhere else is set up for humanoids and they'll be able to get clothes and interact better with everyone else. And khajiit parents outside Elsweyr probably plan when they'll conceive for the right phases of the moon, there are probably easy enough herbal/alchemical/magical birth control methods around.

Like, in Skyrim, all the khajiit aside from the player were members of merchant caravans. Why would a non-humanoid khajiit join one of those? Sounds like a hassle to me.

Don't know where those khajiit who are basically bosmer have been, though.

New souls have to come from somewhere anyway, or else you could never have any population growth from the original supply, and I'm pretty sure tamriel has become more populated in the various peaceful/civilized eras than it was during the crazy primordial fuckwhatever period when it was first formed.

Maybe your soul gets pulled out of aetherius when you're born, and that's why the constellations decide what intrinsic powers you get.

Speaking of, does anyone wish there was more in-universe acknowledgement of the birthsign thing? Like, people being treated differently or favored for certain jobs based on what their sign is?

I don't think there's any real reason to view the cycle of souls as beholden to any mathematical rules.

While it's true that souls generally go to the Dreamsleeve to be "bleached", there's not any reason that I'm aware of that the souls that come out again are the same ones, or that the output has to be in any mathematical relationship with the input.

Basically, you're viewing this as follows:
>1000 people die. 999 souls go to the Dreamsleeve, 1 goes to some other place. 999 souls are recycled and sent back out.

But it might just as well be:
>Any given number of people die. The majority go to the Dreamsleeve, a few do not. The souls are bleached and become featureless "soulstuff". Any given amount of souls come back out.

Or that's about the gist of it, anyway. The real point is that we can't really assume any kind of persistent nature that makes the souls that go in in any way the same souls that come back out. We know that souls go in full of imprinted features, that those eventually dissolve, and that featureless souls come out. Thinking that they're the same souls is possible, but not a necessity.

Consider also that the Princes, and entities like them, are generally only concerned with a small subset of souls (cultists or people of note), within another subset (mortals from certain races). But the amount of souls that are present in "trivial" morals and animals absolutely dwarfs the rather small amount of souls the Princes give a shit about.

Ah, but that could be equally true of why we see only one kind of Argonian, assuming that other kinds exist. Then our explanations are basically headcanon for explaining developer limitations, and at that point we might as well just give up because it's no longer a question of how the setting works, but how the game works, you know?

>>53935665
Not a bad explanation, but what about Khajiit that have grown settled in other communities, such as in Resadyn or Cyrodiil?

And I think there are other mostly-humanoid types of Khajiit.

>Dagoth's control becomes complete as the seeds of his vision sprout from the concavity that once was your head. You are no longer an individual but rather one of Dagoth's many reach appendages.

Gonna be running a quest about a vampire who got turned very similarly to the first vampire

That being death and rape

What would be interesting things to have in it? Might be based in 2E

Was thinking about the overall plot being to either stop a sect of vampires from eery bloodline who think bringing Molag back is a good idea. Mainly the lesser vampires of the clans, i.e vampires far from the first couple of generations and who obtained power by scrounging through the ages and were looked down on by the older and stronger vamps or something. Set sometime in the early third era or during the interregnum as to potential dates

Or should I just kill myself

301st for 'I want off this ride before it gets through Thursday.'

Sometimes the weekend general restriction seems too much when we spill over so regularly, but at the same time I can't really see this thread getting enough attention for a full week every week. I don't know why they've been going on so long lately. Is Sheogorath frustrating our attempts at order? Is Peryite too busy to maintain such order?

in the game I suppose you could say they have lots of Aldmeri-style names but also lots of Nedic or even Reachman inspired ones as well, because of the complete mix of cultures that is High Rock

What do you mean? We can look at all the Breton names thanks to UESP, and as far as I can tell, they are either French or Celtic, with some names that are English - Marian, Albert, etc - and were probably used for being related to medieval romance or myth, like Maid Marian, King Arthur, or Allan-a-Dale. One of the few exceptions is the oddly-named Frikzav Brutya of Morrowind, who even has an odd accent that sets him apart.

Where are you seeing 'such variation?' There's two main groups, three at best if you really look for English names (which are mostly found Online). I find about as much variation in Imperial names, and if I was more versed in etymology could probably see such variation in Redguard and Nord names as well. And all of it fits in perfectly well with the French/Celtic theme that's been developed over the years - I mean, did you think the term 'Bretons' wasn't a nod and a wink to Brittany, which somewhat parallels High Rock's history?
>>
>>53941728
>'Bretons' wasn't a nod and a wink to Brittany
It was a bit more than a nod and a wink. An irl Breton is someone who hails from Brittany.

But yes I agree most names are generic French/English/Norman

While we're on the subject, am I the only one who gets bothered at Redguards having "American" names. It's like you walk into a cornerclub and stands before you is the mysterious Breton sorcerer Alphonse Maddach, the dashing Imperial rogue Vatalli Auroran, and the mighty Redguard warrior Frank.

I say nod and a wink because, aside from a loosely paralleled history and naming conventions, they really aren't all that much like Bretons. You could actually argue that their history is more similar to Wales with equal validity, especially with the idea that High Rock is happiest when a Breton is on the Imperial throne.

>>53941859
Wait a second, what are you-

>Wilbur
>Garry
>Dudley
>Jeanne
>Branwen

Okay, I cannot explain this, especially since this often crosses between Oblivion and Morrowind, and then Skyrim and Online have unabashedly Arabic-sounding names more often than not. Most I can possibly guess is that Redguards and Bretons have had plenty of contact over the years, and some Redguards may have adopted Breton names that sound very modern - sort of like how Louis or Albert sounds modern.
