Well, I had my first session with my new group. It was okay.

A bit frustrated by the sheer number of people. Apparently, most of the time, about half the group shows up at any given session, but we had 7 people. Four of which basically didn't talk.

I got to RP as just a chatty salesperson. I was a bit pissed off that the Rogue seemed to be able to use Deception to a much greater effect than my Persuasion. Every party member seems to have secret shit and mechanics going on, but that could just me not knowing what all bonuses they get.

I hate combat without a grid. I hate that no one knows how cover works. I hate that the DM uses critical failures on skill checks, even if he is being reasonable about it. I hate how many attacks people seem to be able to make even though no one seems to know what dice apply where.

But all in all, I had a good time. I want to be more bardy, but I'm having a hard time getting the tone right. I want to be gruff, funny but genuinely inspirational. It is a tall order.

Also, the Rogue is totally CN, not TN.

New DM here, are there any online resources that essentially are full of quick references regarding all minutia? Stuff like how chases work, what stats affect actions (jump distance, holding breath, etc.), and every other minute rule I don't immediately remember, in a DM screen format if it exists? I could make this stuff, but I'd prefer not starting from scratch if it already exists.

What are the cultural counterparts of Forgotten Realms nations?

In my experience, I've mostly played with home-brewed settings and come up with them. Now I want to do some adventures in the FR setting soon. I've done some research on my end, and so far, the consensus is pretty much "generic medieval fantasy". The 5e SCAG was a good resource, but has scant information that I'm looking for.

I've come up with a few cultural counterparts myself, and if there are any suggestions feel free to add:

Sword Coast & Moonshae Islands = Medieval Britain
Heartlands(Cormyr, Dalelands, Sembia) =
Cold Lands(Damara, Sossal, Vaasa, Moonsea) = Germany & Scandinavia
The Lands of Intrigue(Amn, Calimsham, Tethyr) = Moorish Spain, North Africa
The Old Empires(Unther, Mulhorand, Chessenta) = Babylon, Egypt, and Ancient Greece/Byzantine Empire respectively

It's casterfags fearing that there's a class that finally outdoes them and that it WON'T be nerfed.

I'm shoving a small secret dungeony thing under the church my players have decided to occupy as their own, since they're renovating it and I like the idea of them discovering something interesting as a result.

So far I've dropped a couple of extra plot hooks in there using the main room as a meeting chamber, but I was wondering what else I might fill it up with. It's sort of a crypt, but I'm willing to do whatever with it.

Anyone got any floating ideas they've wanted to put in a place irrelevant to everything else?
>>

I've already been prepping for the past week, it's no skin off my teeth, I just didn't want to do more if resources were already available.

>>
>>53799613
Deception should generally result in better results than persuasion, but be more risky.
Secret shit and mechanics and all that I could easily explain if I was there since I actually know all the rules.
Attacks, depends what level you are but level 1-4 usually you make either one attack or two attacks with a feat, level 5+ you're making two attacks or three attacks with a feat.

Not having a grid sucks. People not understanding the very simple concept that is cover / prone sucks.

Critical failures on skill checks are like >>53800030
says.
Critical failures should only happen if there's something to critically fail at. I find it ridiculous that people get mad because critical failures exist when they should do, 'How DARE my actions have consequences if things just happen to not go my way!' they say, firing an arrow into a dense crowd of people at an enemy and hitting someone who isn't the enemy. If it's 'there's only one other person standing 15ft away from your target but you hit them accidentally' then yes, that's fucking stupid.

As for being more bardy, I don't know. Carry a book of poems with you?
>>
>>53800188
You said you were new to it, so I was just letting you know that its gonna be a lot of prep and you sounded like you weren't enjoying prep.

Primeval Guardian. You can be the king of trees.
>>
>>53800114
>>53800142

Yes yes, awhile, like 4-5 years.

So, any unorthodox pirate ideas?
>>
>>53800197
It really seemed to be more useful because he could use deception against the party, but I feel weird using persuasion against the party.

We're level 5. The bird person seemed to do like 3 attacks, adding sneak to one of them and not others. Which makes sense, but seemed to confuse him.

The halfling rides a panther and seems to have like 5 attacks. One of which deals additional cold and one which knocked someone prone.

Funny you picked the one scenario where crit fails do exists, attack rolls. I just don't care for it. I don't like crit successes for skill checks either, but it has all been within reason.

It needs to be pithy and not pretentious poetry though. I'll look into it.

Metagame wise it's just a variant fighter that works best with archery and at level 11 differs from fighter by having an at-will AoE instead of making more attacks and also at level 3 getting a bit of AoE there too.
So eh.

You can go melee on a ranger, but there's no benefit over being ranged instead. Also, shield master and spear master kinda conflict because bonus action economy. And PAM would probably be better.

Problem is you are going to be shit with a spear unless you can use it with Dex.

The feat is clearly designed with the monk class in mind.
>>
>>53800445
Lycantrophy is more of a curse than a disease, so most likely not.
>>
>>53800460
Can you move into an enemy's space? how does that work exactly?
>>
>>53800511
Technically, no, not without rules like overrun.

However, no reason you have to follow that exactly when it makes sense and the DM would be stupid to tell you 'no'. You wouldn't even really be in their space, just getting closer for an attack.

Ultimately the difference is that you're probably in the centre of the mount and thus cover 5ft radius which only ends up covering parts of some squares so chances are enemies that are diagonal to you might not be in your threat range.
>>
Is the Eldritch Invocation: Improved Pact Weapon as useless as it seems? I mean you can just get a normal focus and a magic weapon that you find as your pact weapon.

I'm having the overall antagonist of my world be the Gith Queen Lich Vlaakith. However I don't know too much about her and although she may be different in my world than in the fluff, I preferably would like her to resemble her canon self. I know she's in her own adventure model but I can't find a pdf of it. I know she's basically a wizard on crack, but what other special features does she have/know?
>>
>>53800376
That doesn't make any sense. In the phb size refers to an area the creature controls not the actual size. It's only logical to assume you could steer the horse slightly left or right within that space.
If it was a huge creature, that explanation would make more sense.
I would rule >>53799518 to be correct if you're on a horse or similar.
>>
>>53799645
Anyone?
>>
>>53800671
you need to hold your focus
>>
>>53800684
By that logic, if you're on a 50ft horse you can make an attack against an enemy 25ft away from you with a club and then 25ft to the other side with a club then 25ft to another side with a club and so forth.

Of course, for normal play it's easier to rule it how you've said, but I think having a seemingly reduced attack area makes sense and it encourages people to use polearms while on a horse.
>>
>>53800593
No. What, why? What are you trying to accomplish?
>>
>>53800724
No that's why I claimed if you're on a huge creature 15x15ft or larger, it would make more sense, as you're probably sitting on the neck of a dragon for example. But with the 10x10ft creatures you're stuck in this awkward halfsquare centre.
>>
>>53800789
The answer is probably to fit the large creature onto a 5x5 space instead of trying to fit you into a 10x10 space.

>>

>>

>>
>>53800861
>I can't wield a two handed pact weapon and also cast a spell that is somatic
You can, removing just one hand from your weapon to cast a spell is a free action

>and requires materials / a focus?
Yes, you need the focus, OR you can get a component pouch, this way you don't need a focus.

so
Component pouch > arcane focus
>>
>>53800726
My party is in serious need of a really diverse support role, I figured it would give me access to a lot of utility
>>
>>53800917

>level 1 party
>blacksmith's daughter kidnapped by goblins
>group has to track them down
>has to roll checks to follow the tracks or talk to the townsfolk enough to know where to go
>have to travel northeast through the forest
>the goblins have taken over the ruins of an old outpost of knights from a fallen kingdom
>there is a group of 2 goblins outside the door lazily keeping watch
>there is also a group of 2 goblins patrolling the area, but the party won't know that
>depending on what they do or how they act they'll either encounter the patrol or won't
>if they encounter the patrol as soon as one goblin dies the other will begin running to warn the others, including the guards at the entrance
>if they don't encounter the patrol they will ambush them in the next encounter inside of the dungeon
>the dungeon itself is short, with about 5 simple rooms
>1st room is a normal entrance with paintings on the walls
>2nd room is an offering room with a hint to a puzzle at the end in front of the bowl, as well as paintings detailing what the order of knights was like
>continuing onwards triggers a pressure plate trap, shooting arrows against the leader of the party
>as they continue to the third room 3 goblins will be there
>>
>>53800951
Here's how you support like a pro:

Take your first level in Life Cleric. This gives you heavy armor and shields and Disciple of Life, as well as access to cleric cantrips (Guidance, Sacred Flame) and Bless (the best early level buff) and Healing Word.

The rest of your levels go in Lore Bard. At Bard 6 you pick up Aura of Vitality as one of your Magical Secrets.

Congratulations, you now have all the support people could want, and are the best goddamned healer in the system, since at level 7 your Aura of Vitality is healing someone for 2d6+5 HP every round for 10 rounds.
>>
>>53801088
>if alerted they will be in cover with weapons drawn, otherwise the party gets the drop on them as they screw around
>if the patrol was never encountered the 2 goblins will come up from behind and pinch the party from both sides
>4th room will be the room the blacksmith's daughter is in
>has a goblin shaman (basic mage with a cantrip or two) and a bugbear who is the leader of the goblins
>party will learn before this that the goblins are sacrificing her to their dark god and the ceremony begins from noon and ends at midnight
>players will be given a chance to rest before this encounter, and may find alchemist fire or healing potions on a goblin or two
>once they save the girl the players will be presented with a puzzle
>solving it leads them to a treasure room with one or two uncommon magic items including a +1 weapon
>when the party gets back I'll have thought of a hook for adventure #2

Most of the really bad posts have been by people supporting mystics.

Most of the anti-mystic posts are lists of what is wrong with them. Obnoxious, but only because it happens to derail the thread.

Mysticfags are insufferable cunts, who just copy pastes replies which are all essentially "NO U" posts, with 0 substance, either attacking the anti-mystic posters and ignoring the points, using the "they are fine if you heavily modify them from RAW" logic, or just repeating themselves after already having their argument debunked.

Both should stop posting, but at least I understand why people feel the need to debunk the bullshit that Mystics are somehow in need of BUFFS, that one of thr mysticfags started saying lay thread. Because come on, I dont care what side of the fence you are, but if you legitimately want to insist that they need buffs, you are either trolling, or actually retarded.

So hey, I haven't really played D&D since 3.5, but I still got most of the rules

Thing is, I was asked to run a game for some super green people. I am trying to minimize the things I have to learn, because I'll have to know everything, and most likely explain things to them when they arise.

Do you guys think I could learn the upgraded things from 5E, and give it a go, or go and look for a more rules-light system?

They aren't really certain of what kind of game they want. And I figured that if someone is uncertain in what ttrpg to play, you can never go wrong with ye old classic D&D

5e is alright for new players. Everything boils down to "add advantage/disadvantage, stat and/or proficiency to d20 roll trying to hit x number". Chargen is pretty quick and shouldn't take more than 20 minutes. Balance is better than 3.5

If your players would still be confused by archetypes etc. you could try B/X instead but then you'd dooming them to a future of only knowing the Basic ruleset and only playing with the approximately 5 OSR grogs in the planet

No. You still require a free hand to reload the crossbow. CBE removes the loading property meaning it no longer takes a bonus action to reload, however it does not change the Ammunition property which is what states that the user requires a free hand.

I've ran a few oneshots (which went really well) but I want to have a larger scale thing, even if there's only one or two consistently recurring characters.
How do you guys handle situations like above? Explain away the disappearances and sudden appearances of characters? I was thinking that I'd have my PCs apart of a small guild, and they get paired up and reinforced as I need.

>>

do some kind of everyone-is-john control switching, where they can contest their will in a CHA or WIS contest 1/round.

Give them the ettin's Two Headed feature:
Two Heads. The ettin has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks and on saving throws against being blinded, charmed, deafened, frightened, stunned, and knocked unconscious.

Wakeful. When one of the ettin's heads is asleep, its other head is awake.

You have to count on your players not being complete shits for it to work, but it could be fun with the right group.
>>
>>53802478
to elaborate, they act on the same initiative. If they agree on what to do, then there's no contest, but if they want to fight they make a contest.

If they have multiattack you might let one player roll one attack, and the other roll another so they both get to roll dice (when they both agree to attack, for example).

How do you best use the darkness ability as a Shadow Monk?
>>
>>53802199
Sure. You're explicitly allowed to throw daggers in two-weapon fighting. Get two-weapon fighting style and dual wielder feat and you can just be ranged dagger guy. If you want to be cheap, you can just buy a shitload of war darts and improvise them as daggers (they deal the same amount and type of damage and are roughly the same size) and use them as improvised daggers as per the improvised weapon rule.

Alternately, you can just buy a shitload of war darts, take the archery fighting style + the sharpshooter feat and just throw one a turn really hard. If somebody closes in improvise them as daggers.
>>
>>53799518
>>53801549
No.
One, your natural reach is determined by YOUR size, and you do not BECOME a large creature while riding a large creature. You are not considered to be occupying all four squares, and no part of that makes sense. RAI, horses also don't have 10ft natural reach- such a thing has been referenced in past editions and other games, and it's a pretty safe/logical bet.

Personally, I don't even have horses/centaurs and the like take up four grid squares, they take up two. You ride on the back square of a horse, and use your own reach/etc.

What's everyone's thoughts on the Seeker Warlock archetype from UA? It sounds like fun, but I don't really know how helpful it would be for anyone that isn't a Pact of the Blade or Tome Warlock.

Also, does the wording for Astral Refuge imply you can cast a ritual spell while in there? I feel like that'd be overpowered but it makes sense to be able to seeing as you can use Astral Sequestration to take a short rest without time passing.
>>
>>53803000
No. It's just a dart. I only added war dart to differentiate it from the modern dartboard dart, since those are scarcely larger than a hand and definitely can't be improvised as daggers.

It works if you're a rogue or even a barbarogue, but as a rogue it's inferior to hand crossbow with CBE in every way except requiring a feat and as a barbarogue you shouldn't have an issue getting close anyway / if you're strength barbarogue you don't add rage damage to ranged attacks.

So I guess, oddly, it works best on a barbarogue maybe?

>>
>>53803094
The alert feat wouldn't negate the fact that you also have the blinded condition while in darkness.

Basically, while in darkness firing out:
>You have advantage to hit, they can't see you
>You have disadvantage to hit from being blinded
>You have disadvantage to hit from not being able to see the target
and in reverse
>Enemy has advantage to hit you since you can't see it [Negated by alert]
>Enemy has advantage to hit you because you're blinded
>Enemy has disadvantage to hit you because it can't see you

And if you're out of darkness and it's firing out
>Enemy has advantage to hit you because you can't see it [negated by alert]
>enemy has disadvantage to hit, blinded
>Enemy has disadvantage to hit, can't see out
and in reverse
>You have advantage to hit, it's blinded
>Advantage to hit, it can't see you
>You have disadvantage, you can't see it

So it only helps in the specific instance that you're outside darkness and it's inside darkness.

I cast darkness on the campfire.

Given darkvision only gives you dim light, it's only natural that they're not really going to care much about a slightly darker spot in the background.

Also, there are many effects that require line of sight. Many spells can be stopped by breaking line of sight. You can also do things without your enemies knowing, such as setting up traps.
>>
>>53803966
Yeah. Basically, growing a size should give you +2.5ft reach, effectively.

Of course, I could be wrong because I remember some large creatures having larger reach values, but I think I'm right and the original question about reach wouldn't have happened in the first place if it weren't the case.

How should I incorporate science fiction into my setting? My players have expressed interest in taking their elves and dwarves on a spaceship and go looking for aliens.

My thoughts right now: Have Abeir, since the Weave doesn't exist there so magic is presumably much more difficult to cast, be a much more technologically advanced world than Toril, and set up a quest to Returned Abeir or something where the players can discover a space program or something. Ah my favorite setting type, I plan on doing something very similar for my players, of course its a slightly different setting that base forgotten realms, but it will still work out for you.

Since its already a portal type game, the players discovered one to enter !not Egypt, and from there they were stuck wandering the desert for a whole week, sucking the dew off the plant person's leaves for sustenance. Eventually they managed find a camp of desert nomads. They spoke about how they were retreating from a pyramid which had recently been uncovered by the sand. That is three days away, the nearest town being a week. With renewed supplies from the nomads they went to the pyramid.

Long story short, there was an ancient pharaoh who arrived in the desert in the ancient past. He told everyone he was the chosen of Ra and he was a strange being. Elongated skull, pale blue skin. This pharaoh arrived with a hail of an eclipse, and a falling sun. When he stepped from there, the natives hailed him as their priest king, sent by Ra.

So they built him a pyramid to his specifications, and a strange device with magic and his knowledge. The device was a stargate for him to bring others of his kind to rule over these natives.

When a second hail of stars fell. This solid metal star landed deep in the desert, and all who approached it perished. The pharaoh had it buried in the sand, and he charged himself with protecting it.

So the players go look for the fallen star, expecting to find a ton of adamantine, so when found it, the druid used his magic to uncover it, and it was almost like a metallic boat. They entered it and found the remains of what looked like a monk who perished around the remains of strange otherworldly creatures. in his hand a contraption, and in his robes a strange map. There was still a bit of power in the ship, so with the wizard's finagaling they managed to activate a homing beacon type deal that told them where the nearest stargate could be found

Run The Immortal's Fury.
http://folk.uio.no/andremoa/Wrath%20of%20the%20Immortals/NEW%20Wrath%20Of%20The%20Immortals%20-%20The%20Immortals%27%20Fury.pdf

It's all about the consequences of an ancient spaceship crash-landing and slowly destroying all magic. The gods get involved, you play around with radiation and non-necromantic zombies, you go to the hollow earth and the moon, walk around some super high-tech spaceship shit, destroy an entire continent of wizards (from space) with a doomsday device, and other cool things.

It's set in Mystara, but you can swap out place names for Forgotten Realms shit. You can put it anywhere, but Glantri is pretty close to Halruaa lore-wise. The local politics aren't THAT important, since everything is being secretly guided by the Gods of the setting anyway; you could just as easily say X God has his fingers in all the pies of Cormyr or Amn or Chessenta and is directing them to war with whoever else.
The big difference is all the God stuff (since Immortals work quite differently in Mystara), but you could replace "the Sphere of Energy is being eaten by the Shield's radiation" with "the Shield is eating Mystra and the Weave". Since it's not destroying magic entirely, but instead replacing it with something ELSE, some Gods may be interested in seeing how this new thing plays out (since it's just as powerful) and if it has fewer downsides. Forgotten Realms lore is full of civilizations getting too magically powerful and blowing themselves up, so Gods might be a little tired of this and see this "Radiance" as a way of breaking the cycle of civil annihilation.

Nukes and nanobots destroyed the planet, so the only survivors were stuck on the moon. They couldn't leave (nanobots) so they had to wait around for hundreds of thousands of years until the nanobots broke down, during which they got weak and spindly and ran low on resources. No colonizing other worlds; all attempts picked up nanobots and failed.

They tried to recolonize the planet but it was still too harsh for them. So they engineered a successor race that could survive it all to try and clean the place up, but they couldn't stop praising the moonpeople as Gods and the experiment was terminated (but not completely, oops).
The Second Children came in several thousand years later when the planet recovered some and more gene-juice could be dedicated to "be smart" rather than "don't die". But they were stubborn as all get-out, hyper-literal, and had to be terminated as well. Again, not completely, and the PCs played members of this race.
The Third Children came later still when the planet was mostly back on its feet again, and they're all tall and beautiful and smart and perfect and they do what the Moon People say without calling them gods. Everything's great, we can finally get civilization back on tra--

Oh no. An alien has arrived from outer space. He's looking for ancient technology buried within the planet (which was the basis for the nukes and nanobots humanity eventually almost destroyed themselves with), and now he's got the more powerful and arrogant Third Children working for him while he raises a giant robot army. The Moon People can't stop him because they're stuck on the fucking moon, and he's down there being cool.

Had an Alchemist Artificer in LMoP. More useful than my Awakened Mystic, but neither of us were in it to cheese. He could have been a real bitch abusing Mass Shield of Faith and Alchemist's Acid vs. objects if he wanted to. Healing was nice.

The once change the DM made for him was the mechanical pet worked more like a typical familiar. Small animal (he chose an owl) which could be remote-controlled, and he had a pair of goggles that he could put on to see through the owl's eyes. We mostly used it to guard our cart while we went in dungeons.

It's hard to say how it would fare in later levels considering that familiar change and LMoP ending pretty low. His combat damage was usually low, as you'd expect, but the AoE Fire cantrip was pretty good and he could have abused others if he'd wanted.

I will say that the scaling of Alchemist's Acid and Fire is weird. For some of the low levels, Fire and Acid do the same damage despite one being single-target, and they kind of pingpong back and forth. I'd probaby bump Acid to 1d8.

How do you handle politics in your games, /5eg/?

Do you allow players to start as direct royalty (prince, princess)? What if your player wants to become the King?

What if your evil character wants to become a powerful politician and do some corrupt shit?

What if your player wants to own a castle? Do you give them nobility, and if so, what is their job and relation to the kingdom at large?

You're doing it wrong.
Most of the Realms cultures only VAGUELY at best resemble real world ones, with the notable exception of Mulhorond and Unther which are literally inhabitants of Mesopotamia and Egypted that got stargated to Toril by dickass wizard.
Example; the Turami are a dark-skinned people who live in a varied Mediterranean climate, but they have multiple forms of government (a city-state alliance, a religious government, a militarized meritocracy, a trading group, etc) and technological development equal to every other culture in Faerun, as well as a developed maritime naval culture on the Inner Sea. They also have Italian/Latin names despite being close to North Africans in appearance.

Greenwood developed Faerun well before the "make your fantasy setting a bad patische of Europe" fad ever took off, so instead Faerun has hints of multiple cultures in the way that all human cultures everywhere have strong similarities in certain areas.

The actual similarities are like this.

Moonshaes: Norse Gaels, an extremely specific subculture of old Gaelic cultures.

Illuskan: Vaguely Danish, only mostly not. They do not have Danish names or gods, or practices, or social rules.

Calimshan: Vaguely like the Ottoman Empire in cultural position and importance, but actual culture is wildly different from actual Ottoman culture or any Middle-Eastern culture in general actually.

Amn: They are Spain for the purposes of naval exploration, but they do not have Spanish names or a Spanish culture. They also don't really resemble any other culture on the planet, more like hyperexaggerated modern capitalism in an early modern fantasy setting.

>>
>>53799706
>Sword Coast & Moonshae Islands = Medieval Britain
Not really. They have next to no similarities with Britain, and actually the Moonshaes have an almost completely different culture and call people from the mainland "Continentals".
>Heartlands(Cormyr, Dalelands, Sembia)=
Cormyr resembles a generic fantasy kingdom but traditionally it's much more mercantile with a stronger emphasis on centralized power more akin to Rome. They having a standing army for example, which is the opposite of a feudal culture.
>Cold Lands(Damara, Sossal, Vaasa, Moonsea) = Germany & Scandinavia
Way off. Damaran names sound vaguely Eastern European but their cultures are all different. And I do mean ALL; all three cultures you listed are completely different. Sossal's people don't even look human; they have pale white skin, white hair, and pale eyes.
>The Lands of Intrigue(Amn, Calimsham, Tethyr) = Moorish Spain, North Africa
Not really, no.
Amn and Calimshan especially are weird. What's funny is that you can see how Calimshan's culture influenced Amnish culture, except that even cursory examination shows that these cultures have no real-world equivalents.
>The Old Empires(Unther, Mulhorand, Chessenta) = Babylon, Egypt, and Ancient Greece/Byzantine Empire respectively
Actually, yes.
Their backstory is that the Imaskari did the Stargate thing and warped them to Faerun. Even their gods are ones from Earth with names altered from centuries of Imaskari slavery thousands of years ago misremembering their original pronounciation.

It should be noted that all type over time have changed a lot, with the exception of Mulhorond.
>>
>>53806228
Well when you think about it, the only reason the "Dragon Age countries" thing is common now is because it's literally just a fad that's been popular in the last decade or so.

I'm talking about the long rest adjustments, with a short rest being 8 hours and a long one being a week. It sounds like most full casters would need to manage their slots extremely carefully or be relegated to ritual casting duty, unless the DM gave them a week to rest after every encounter, while warlocks only need to manage their hit dice and stay out of harm's way during encounters to be constantly at near full capacity
>>
>>53806030, >>53806390
To elaborate on this; Faerun doesn't really organize culture by nations that often because most of Faerun's nations aren't really very centralized at all, in fact trending towards the opposite.
Instead culture is mostly influenced by ethnicities and events impacting their culture with nearby other cultures.

It's HARD to generalize about people in Faerun, there's just too much variety in how all of them operate and work.

>>
>>53806551
Amn and Calimshan both have extremely capitalistic cultures, and Amn was conquered by the Shoon Imperium (Calimshan's older government) ages ago.
In the details they're still very different.
Amn for example has no slaves and it worships Waukeen almost exclusively and treats gaining money as literally the main focus of life; the more financially successful you are the more important you are in Amnish culture. Nobility is only important in the sense that noble families often have more money, the bloodline itself is totally irrelevant.
Calimshan conversely has LOTS of slaves, but wealth isn't it's own objective there. Rather then like Amn where your job is to make more money so you can keep making more money, Calimshan is all about making enough money until you're comfortable enough to not work anymore, and in fact "working for a living" and "working too hard" is looked down upon. Religiously they also are less supportive of Waukeen and instead don't really care about what God you worship at all.

Anon is confusing accent with culture. In Dragon Age, countries speak with various accents of English (not all of them European) to make foreigners actually appear foreign. Their cultures, however, are only vaguely reminiscent of the countries whose accents they stole.
The only exception is Oralais, which sort of resembles pre-revolution France superficially and occasionally uses French words. Everyone else just has accents.

Pure barbarian is fine if you want to go greataxe/maul and use their appropriate feats. If you don't want to use the feats, don't bother.

Oh, also, have a chart. I believe this doesn't assume reckless attack so generally barbarians have a high hit chance and it tends towards the right.

New player here. Can someone explain to me the differences between warlock, sorcerer, and wizard? I'm trying to understand why you wouldn't just go wizard.

Warlocks make a pact with a powerful being for magic, sorcerers are born with innate magic, and wizards study to learn it.

>why you wouldn't just go wizard

You would, if you were minmaxing.
>>
>>53807813
Wizard
>Lots of ritual utility, good archetype features, wide spell selection
Warlock
>Powerful cantrip, push enemies around a LOT. Possibly also devil's sight for darkness shenangians or invisible familiar shenangians or ritual casting like wizard from book of ancient secrets
Sorcerer
>I guess you're basially wizard but less spells and, uhh.. You can twin haste to have haste cast on two people at once instead of just one? That's pretty neat.
Sorlock
>HOLY SHIT LAZERS EVERYWHERE THE ENEMY IS BEING BLASTED TO THE MOON, LITERALLY
>>
>>53807535
>Can you explain why? I was under the impression that more attacks outweighed higher damage die.

1) Barbarians don't get TWF fighting style, so they're denied their STR bonus to off-hand damage. At level 5 you're looking at:

3d6+14 ~~ 24.5 two short swords
vs
4d6+12 ~~ 26 a greatsword

2) You can get the Dual Wielder fighting style to improve your damage slightly (shifting the d6 to d8 for a +3 net), but 2h can take Polearm Master and/or Great Weapon Master. Note that boosting your Strength should always come first before GWM.

3) You only need one good magical weapon.

4) Barbarian specific, they get access to crit die bonuses, further favoring picking high damage die weapons.

Dual Wielding has a niche use in the early levels and for Rogues, but otherwise it's suboptimal.
>>
>>53807813
Largely flavor.
Classic difference is that wizards know shit, sorcerers explode shit and warlocks are sneaky shits.
>>
>>53807885
>Note that boosting your Strength should always come first before GWM.
Yeah, no.
Especially on a barbarian, GWM is more important, referring to >>53807593 and considering that this is before reckless attack applies.

Basically, unless all the enemies your DM throws at you have an AC about ~3-4 higher than what's expected for the level you're at, GWM is better.

Hey so I have an issue I need help with, guys. My DM worked us into a corner and we're not sure how to reconcile what we've played so far with forgotten realms lore.

So we recently started a new campaign set in Mulhorand. Five minutes of research on my part painted a sort of arid middle-eastern type society, which clearly my DM did not know before our first session. He put us in a medieval european fantasy town that was some sort of bastion of progressivism and anti-slavery sentiment somewhere near the center of the whole area. He also made the slavery more about race—us being Americans—than I really thought appropriate for the setting.

But I digress. This land being constantly referred to as Mulhorand, I also realized that we were set in some time before the Spellplague, as Skuld still stands. That's fine, I guess. We can just adjust our clocks for that, but how do we fix all this inconsistency without starting completely over? We've already had two sessions in which we've explored this anti-slavery town, and we've also met a ham-fisted Abraham Lincoln doppelganger named Abrehoon Licoon. Do we just cut and paste this town somewhere else?

>>
>>53808221
Mulhorand is an ancient Eypgt analogue you fucking tard
>>
>>53808221
It's not just Middle-Eastern, it's literally Ancient Egypt with it's ruling class being both nobility and priests, with the ruling leaders actually being mortal Incarnates of the deities themselves. Also, slavery wasn't about race, but social class, which was actually true for almost all of history prior to Spanish chattel slavery.
And in "modern" (5e) Mulhorondi apparently slavery WAS abolished after Mulhorond was re-established (and Skuld magically created again, though large geographic changes from 4e were literally completely ignored and undone in 5e Realms, which is basically the "We're Sorry We Did All That Dumb Shit" edition) due to Mulhorond being re-enslaved by the Imaskari wizards (again) and then relying on their gods to free them (again).

But a simple explanation is make this town a colony of some other realm, or even just some adventurer leading a personal crusade against a culture that they don't personally agree with and are devoted to fighting against.
Basically a midget-nation that established itself in a larger one by a skilled but otherwise minor person who is being ignored by Mulhorond itself.

The Fighter is a noble so I'm giving him a chance to send the Tresendar descendants a lost heirloom and get deeds to the ruined manor in exchange. (Is this a good idea?)

But...the Cleric is an ex-sergeant from Mintarn. What opportunities does he get in the town? Who could be an ex-soldier from there who recognizes his authority? Do I let him requisition ~100GP worth of stuff from Barthen's/Lionshield Coster?
>>
>>53808489
What's the ex-Sergeant Cleric's exact Backround?
>>
>>53808489
He's a Soldier?
Soldiers actually aren't too great in Faerun, mostly because VERY few nations in the Sword Coast, North, and even most of the other nations have any kind of large standing army, instead relying on a militia with a small professional force bolstered by mercenaries.
A good example? Mintarn itself has no actual army or militia, but it has a shitload of mercenaries it hires to do the same thing.

That's why the Mercenary Veteran backround was added in SCAG.
>>
>>53799524
>Str Ranger
You hate yourself, are bad at math, or didn't pay attention to what edition you are playing and should have played a Fighter with an Outdoorsy background.
>>
>>53799470
>Movie Wonder Woman is a monk

How do you dump wisdom then?
>>
>>53800278
What have you played?
3, 4 game sessions?
Done anything with your path or mission, or do you just masturbate internally to them?
Are you that guy who makes a character and needs to shelf them after a month?
>>
>>53808381
This, everyone's worse then a Bard because in this edition Bards literally CAN do everything.

Even a Wizard can't heal, weapon attack, wear armour, skill monkey and etc. whereas a Bard can.
>>
>>53808489
I'm pretty sure the Dwarf's meant to be related to someone there. If he isn't then just make one of the NPC's who give a quest there be a Dwarf who's his cousin or something.
>>
>>53799387
Would the Harpers use trolls to achieve their goals?
>>
>>53808665
That's originally what a Bard was supposed to do; he's not the best at any one thing but he's the ideal support character because he can support ANYONE.
He can make it so the Cleric doesn't have to burn all of his healing, do some of the utility spells when a Wizard or Sorcerer doesn't have many left, he can get in there and hit things with the fighter, and he can shore up the skill list the Rogue didn't take with his own, and he can boost everyone with his magic.

The ideal party Bard is for the player who doesn't fuck around during the game and is willing to be the hardest working party member, because your job is to make every task easier for every other party member you have.
>>
>>53808716
They might TRICK trolls, sure.
Not even sure it would be that hard to do, trolls are definitely not very bright.
What exactly is their "goal" in this situation? Trolls aren't really good for anything except killing and eating shit.
>>
>>53808735
Problem with Bard is that it's too easy to be "more than passable" at all things.

Like, if each class has four qualities, and they're generally rated 0-10 along them, you have Fighters being something like 10 10 0 2, Wizards being 1 3 10 8, and so on, where everyone adds up to 22.
Then Bards come along and they're 7 7 7 7, which is 28.
>>
>>53808803
Fair point, but what can you do?
Every edition has had problems like that so far. Every game period, actually.
>>
>>53806961
Delirium?
>>
>>53806961
HOLY SHIT! Is that a mother fucking jojo reference?
>>
>>53808828
Bard's main issue is the balance has to be juuussssst right, and it never has been. Their jack-of-all thing is either worthless because they're barely better then someone untrained, or too strong because they're only a tiny bit weaker then someone devoted to it.

Honestly I feel like they should shift it out of some roles, maybe make Melee Bards more focused on using supporting attacks and remove most damage spells. They're a bit worse then others at damage, but making them the single worst class at it could help balance it's ability everywhere else.
>>
>>53808683
We've established he's a cousin of the Rockseekers. I'm not sure about introducing a fifth relative...

>>53808527
>>53808579
Yeah, he's a Soldier from a mercenary company. I gave my players the default pregens to pick from because this is my first campaign ever, and he ran with the Cleric's existing backstory, which is
>Train as a soldier in Mintarn
>Join Neverwinter as part of a hired mercenary company
>Disappointed because his fellow soldiers are supposed to protect people but end up abusing their power
>Disobeys orders to follow his conscience
>Suspended from duty, keeps rank and connections
>Dedicates himself to Marthammor Duin
>Wants to fuck up the Redbrands for being horrible to the townspeople too

Should I give him a good standing with Sister Garaele? Or maybe Edermath, who's looking for someone who can deal with undead?
>>
>>53808753
There's a power vacuum so different nefarious groups are struggling for supremacy. One of them is smuggling poisons and drugs into the cities and they use the trolls to raid the caravans.
>>
>>53808828
Not much, just sayin'. It's an unavoidable consequence of the compressed power scale of various actions and the "pillars" of 5E, and TTRPGs in general.

Same shit when it comes to making a gish. Okay, so we've ditched different BAB progressions for classes, and a Wizard has the same to-hit bonus as a Fighter if they have equal Strength or Dex.
If you want to make a "caster who fights" gish, you give it Extra Attack and you're just fucking done. It's now as capable at dealing melee damage as the Fighter. Martials are distinguished by having two attacks.
If you want to make a "fighter who casts" gish, you have to give it spells. But it's a lot easier to give it much fewer or weaker spells than it is to hand out something less than a second attack, because spellcasting is a much more discrete and parcel-able feature than hitting twice.

If we were making an FPS, we could make 200 guns that all handle noticeably different much more easily if our average time-to-kill was 2 seconds instead of 0.3 seconds. More room to run around in there.
>>
>>53808894
>Or maybe Edermath
Yes, Edermath should just be his best friend and invite him to join his faction.

People can say what they want but the factions can be a good tool for characters who have too few alliances in the current area to have something going on.
>>
>>53808894
Mercenary Veteran is actually a Backround in the SCAG, and it's Backround is actually more universally useful then Soldier because you know all about mercenaries and Mercenary hangouts.
>>53808899
You explained the situation, not what the Harpers are trying to accomplish.
>>
>>53809010
It started with them realizing that people were disappearing. Upon further investigation they realized it had to do the potions being smuggled so they used various monstrous creatures, including trolls, to intercept the goods in question but the local chapter lacks the means to identify it. They assume it to be evil. Which is where our intrepid adventurerers enter.
>>
>>53807885
Barbs dont get any fighting style which is too bad
>>
x 5 / Rogue 15

What should x be? Which is the better class to start and get extra attack before going rouge? Rangers seems bad, Barbarians use STR and not DEX... I think Paladin or Fighter would be the best choice
>>
>>53809181
Then no, that is wildly out of character for the Harpers. They honestly aren't even organized enough to pull that shit off most of the time.
The Moonstars on the other hand might indeed do that, they're significantly more morally flexible then the Harpers and a lot more willing to do the wrong thing for the right reason.
>>
>>53809282
Warlock. You get 3 Invocations and 2 level three spells per short rest.

Go Bladelock for Extra Attack and stuff or go another kind and use GFB/BB. I think Ravenlock would fit a Warlock/Rogue really well, get Silence and a good scout/perception boost.

Given the time-frame it would be a proto group. The very beginnings of the group. Maybe the PCs could be founding members, though so far they have been tricked as well.
>>
>>53809282
Barbarogue works. Hit die and Bear Totem for tankiness, Reckless Attack for always-on-demand SA, and Danger Sense works well with Evasion.

Using DEX on Finesse wepons is entirely optional: you can hit and do damage with STR on a Rapier and still get your Sneak Attack die. And Barbarians already need 14 DEX to function so transitioning to Rogue incurs no MADness.

Finally, Rage with Athletics makes for excellent shield bashers and grapplers.
>>
>>53809396
Rogue Harpers, perfect
>>
>>53809402
>you can hit and do damage with STR on a Rapier and still get your Sneak Attack die

Uh, no, while you'd obviously need a Finesse weapon to start, I thought Sneak Attack damage was only incurred when you used the Finesse property (so used DEX)?
>>
>>53809466
Pretty sure you can get sneak dice any time you can normally.

The Moonstars were generally more organized and personally loyal to Blackstaff himself.
Khelben's dead in 5e and supposedly the Moonstars with him, but they started showing up again after his wife showed up as Open Lord of Waterdeep.

>Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack muse use a finesse or a ranged weapon.

The weapon needs to have the finesse property, but you need not use it.

And since you don't understand Sneak Attacks, as a freebie I'll bring notice to the 'once per turn' part: through reactions, you can potentially use Sneak Attack twice per round. This is so often and painfully misunderstood by people.

Frontline Strength Barbarogue with a Rapier is perfectly viable. Add Shield Master or Sentinel or what have you to make it even better.

Gonna be playing my 2nd level Cleric here in a bit with the guys. Also gonna level up today since our games are almost always combat and I'm only 100 XP away. Can't wait for those 2nd level spells!

Nerd girls are worse then nerd guys sometimes because in many parts of the US women aren't allowed to even sexually express themselves or admit to being horny about shit.

Hence the above problem.
I was with this girl who LOVED Game of Thrones (the show, though later she read the novels) and she admitted to watching the rapey stuff over and over.

Finesse property lets you pick between useing either STR or DEX for your attacks with that weapon.
