a fair amount of East Asians- i.e. Mongolians, Koreans, Japanese and Chinese- in art tend to be drawn with light or even pale skin tones compared to South, Southeast and Western Asians, but combined with their hair/eye color, facial construction and outfits, they can hardly be mistaken for Caucasians.

there's a common phrase in tagalog which translates into "you look like the help" and I've only heard it used against darker skinned Asians. what I don't know is if that's an indigenous discrimination or something the Spanish or Americans brought with them when they took over the islands.

Its definitely a result of colonialism. Western standards of beauty permeated cultures all over the East because the tall, strong, and wealthy Europeans and Americans that came into the country were not only exotic, but rich beyond the imaginations of most of the local communities.

I think that's all I got for kids that might pass as students. I have more young male character art, but most of them are either armed or wearing an outfit that couldn't quite pass for school clothes.

colonialism compounded the issue, but its based more on class than race. If you're dark skinned, it means you work in the fields, so its associated with poverty. the reverse is true for fair skinned people. At least, this is the case in Sri Lanka and India, i can't speak for other asian countries.
