I like the kitchen sink because seeing how everything meshes or tries to mesh together is fun. Its also fun for having a legitimate reason for humans to not be dominant and default. Combining planescape with eberron and FR makes for some wacky shit.

Tonight I'll be playing a Light cleric, and I want to do it in a very Inquisition "Purge the Unclean" way. I just didn't know until right now that we'd be playing in the Forgotten Realms, and I'm not terribly familiar with the setting.

What deities would be more in line with that kind of behavior?
>>
Battlemaster and cavalier are like if wizard got no features besides casting spells, limited spell selection, and didn't get arcane recovery until level 15.

I had basically never had a situation where I couldn't sneak attack over 10 levels as a rogue (no, I was swash, but admittedly, I got a familiar).

>Deals 1d6+STR
>Bounding Shield: Upon striking a target (hit or miss), if you have the Extra Attack Feature, you may use it with this weapon to make another ranged weapon attack roll, that counts your first target as the starting point for the throwing range. Whether or not you chose to do so, the shield returns to you after an attack roll up to 80 feet in whatever direction you ended your turn in. If it reaches you, you may catch it
>You may not benefit from Shield AC bonus while the Mighty Shield is not on your imediate Person
>>
>>53671297
i imagine since fire genasi are more arrogant and confident that subtly isn't their strong point. as part of their ambush, have them use pyrotechnics or some other fire/light related spell to blind or otherwise hinder the party while they go in for the kill. they can block pathways with fire and guide the party into another ambush if they try and flee.

also i imagine that during the whole first round, as they are burning and stabbing the party, they're having some elaborate introduction to themselves sort of ginyu force or team rocket style.

they're trying to eliminate this Water Genasi PC. she comes from the elemental plane of water, trying to find the cause of greater chaos sending the tides of her plane crazy. she's trying to bring law and rest the chaos of her plane.

the Fire Genasi assassins (or mercenaries as their job) hail from the elemental plane of fire. they wish to fan the flames of war and chaos on the material plane to enrage the flames back on their home plane. they caught wind of the Water Genasi and what she's done so far and they wanna take her out by any means necessary.

so i suppose evil. i doubt they'd care too much for collateral but i dont think they'd ALSO want a bunch of noble houses on their asses for lighting the house ablaze and announcing themselves.

>>53672120
Because the way the feature is worded right now, it is a conditional:

If you have extra attack
You may use it to make another (singular) attack with this feature.

Here's how I would word it. Make it an actual weapon with the ranged tag, so being able to hit multiple enemies is just part of the normal rules, and then give it a custom rule that defines the bounding property.

Something like this:

Bounding Shield
Range 20/60
Damage, etc, etc
Properties: Thrown, Bounding

Bounding: This weapon's range is calculated as if from the attacker, or the last target attacked this turn, and it can return to its user after being thrown. If, after the final attack with this weapon in a turn, the weapon is more than 60 feet away from its user the weapon does not return immediately. Instead, it travels to it's user at a rate of 60 feet per turn.

Do you think it would be fair to make the satire bard's tumble be a choose dash or disengage, maybe throwing in the extra jump part? As is there is no reason not to tumble every turn for 50-60ft of movement, disengage, and mad hops for hit and run tactics.

ignore these fags, the combo might not be super effective but it's actually pretty okay. you don't need that many fighter levels though since warlocks get a multiattack invocation, but if you really want that level 6 ASI, consider going eldritch knight and going 7 levels. you get more spell slots, access to shield/absorb elements, and can GFB+extra attack. if your DM is letting you multiclass with UA (dear god no) the combo gets a substantially stronger with improved pact weapon and the smite abilities warlock gets.

>>
>>53673171
Warlock/paladin has more synergy if that's what you're going for

Related, how would you stat King Arthur? All paladin, all fighter or Archfey/Hexblade Bladelock?
>>
>>53673209
If you go fighter to 7 there is no real point in going warlock beyond that, you don't get their main gish features until level 3, 5 and 12. Extra attack invocation is wasted at that point and you are better spent just going EK up until the end for casting as a bonus.
>>
>>53673156
So would you say only 2 fighter then? Does it cost anything to use the invocation?
>>
>>53673256
Pally that got a +3 sword
>>
>>53673265
No, it's just a permanent extra attack as long as you use the pact blade. It's Thirsting Blade. Another invocation a bladelock should probably take is Lifedrinker for +cha damage

Why not Pala/Lock? They share most of your requirements with added Charisma synergy ontop

In this edition paladins don't get their power from gods. To me it's using magic but in a different way, instead of studying or making a pact with something you are literally imposing your will on the magic in and around you. It fits the theme of their Cha being a main stat and helps to explain their ability to cast, at least in my mind.

>>
>>53673669
Comparing the code of chivalry to the usual discipline you could expect from a soldier is missing the point. King Arthur and several of his knights can easily be said to be living ideals of chivalry, not to mention the whole "rightwise king born of all England/king once and king to be" thing,
>>
>>53673256
How do you divide the levels for warlock/pally? Does oath and pact matter?
>>
>>53673751
Ideals of chivalry have fuckall to do with being a paladin. Paladins are those who believe in a code so thoroughly that their faith magically empowers them. Arthur may have held on to a code, but there's little evidence it gave him any powers. He was no different from a samurai following the code of Bushido.
TL;DR: Knights aren't automatically paladins.
>>
>>53673716
>>53673663
Dead is not fun, it's pretty bad for the whole table too. All the time, energy and effort for both DM and players is wasted when a character die.

5e emphasis on fun.
>>
>>53673733
Well if he goes vengeance an easy "opposite" to that is devotion. Although I'm pretty partial to Ancients for the fluff and the aura against magic and could be used to show a more care free person who still is a paladin but has a different approach on how to make the world better. This is of course if you're only using stuff in the books, I don't have a huge amount of experience with UA oaths.

Everyone wants to play a vengeance pally then think it gives them free reign. It doesn't
>>
>>53673780
Arthur was only surpassed in martial skill by other knights of the round table, like Lancelot, Galahad (who are father and son, and whose whole shtick is being perfect knights, with Lancelot's small flaw of sleeping with the Queen), Percival and Gawain. To everyone else he may as well have been invincible. He definitely wasn't just a normal person, but whether his skill was "normal" by D&D standards is more up to debate. He was probably mid-level regardless of anything else
>>
>>53673756
Warlock multiclasses are almost always 2/3 levels because of how front loaded they are. You wouldn't need Blade so your preference of Chain or Tome
>>
>>53673832
I can see that logic, however when done correctly a PC death can be a huge either turning point or growth point for the other PCs. Yes it sucks but it makes it a little more annoying to balance challenging fights for the party when the system is set to keep them alive as much as possible.

Could someone please give a clarification on an issue my group and I faced last night?
In short:
>Sneaking in to thieves hideout
>My rogue turns invisible before any sort of encounter
>Sneak up behind two lookouts guarding a door
>Other group members are just waiting around the corner, out of sight
>Tell DM I slash at the one guard with my short-sword
>DM tells us to roll for initiative
>Bard in our group gets highest roll with my Rouge going 2nd

So does my surprise attack take place first and then we go into the normal initiative order or does my attack somehow not take place until after the Bard's turn?

Bard goes before the rogue does, but with all reason, the group is 'waiting' so there's no stimulus for him to go without waiting for your attack. Knowing initiative in this context would be metagaming.
The rogue goes, and then the enemies go, but with all reason, the DM would rule the enemies to be surprised, and lose their turn.

Initiative for the purpose of sneaky ambushes is metaknowledge.

Actually follow the oath is the biggest thing, read it and make sure you understand what it allows and doesn't.

My major sticking point is if people use vengeance paladin and attempt to explain any action they take as within their oath.

>-Fight the Greater Evil. Faced with a choice of fighting my sworn foes or combating a lesser evil.

>-I choose the greater evil.
Pretty straight forward always hunt the greater evil, if it would endanger hunting the greater ignore the lesser.

-No Mercy for the Wicked. Ordinary foes might win my mercy, but my sworn enemies do not.
You are still bound to show Mercy if asked from lesser evils, but a sworn enemy will receive none.

-By Any Means Necessary. My qualms can’t get in the way of exterminating my foes.
Smite all the evil, pic related

-Restitution. If my foes wreak ruin on the world, it is because I failed to stop them. I must help those harmed by their misdeeds.

You're obligated to help those who have been affected by the evil you hunt.

getting one extra spell from cleric or paladin is pretty good, You probably only want to take one or two from those classes anyways as a heal or something similar. Most bard spells handle utility and damage well enough.
>Mastery of gospel
not that great, descent at early levels but will mostly fall very short in later levels for the health parts. Usually the bardic die won't matter for giving advantage though. As the bardic die is basically like giving advantage to something. Its mostly just more of a guaranteed thing.

I'm having trouble with a quest.
What possible motivation would an old veteran have to awaken a forgotten evil entity beneath a small town to kill everybody?
I wanted it to be something that makes him look sympathetic, even just a little, but I can't think of anything that works.
Trying to use the power of the evil entity to resurrect his loved one would be a classic one but killing a whole town to accomplish that goes a bit too far. The party's paladin would behead him faster than you can say "guilty".
If the townspeople were somehow responsible for the death of his loved one then it would make him seem a bit more sane, but I'm drawing a blank here too.
Even if I went with the "town is guilty, he's getting revenge" path then it would be far too obviously the culprit when the party begins to investigate, it'd need to be something that nobody in the town thinks that he would go that far to get revenge for.

CR in 5e is a holdover from 3.pf. The relatively light and ad-hoc monster design constraints mean it's at best a wild guess.
We're back to the days of 2e where the DM needed to:
1. Know the game well enough to have a good feel for monster difficulty,
2. Guess what works for his party, and
3. Often adjust partway through combat when it inevitably turned out he was wrong.

CR is definitely the worst part of 5E, it's completely broken and is the one of the few things I think needs a complete and total overhaul.

Rakasha should be fine, they don't really do anything and you should be playing one so that it's just laughing at the party as they fail to do nothing and just fucking with them without outright killing them. That is, until they become an actual threat later in the game.

CR is one of the biggest issues when it comes to summon spells. Not all CR 1/4 monsters were created equal. The UA summons are a reflection of this having exact numbers, and summon choices instead of leaving it to you.

Pls help
I'm putting together a sci-fi-esque system with high racial variety and want to provide customization option inside each racial group (humanoids, goblinoids, fey, etc.)
>>
>>53675665

In that case it depends on the situation of the attacker. If the invisible foe didn't use its action to hide, the PC should know it's general direction where it last saw it. They can follow it roughly based on sounds like movement and if they choose to attack it, they are doing so at a disadvantage since they still don't know EXACTLY where the creature is.

If the creature tries to hide, if it rolls higher than your passive perception, you don't know where it is and you'd have to succeed on a perception check at a disadvantage. In other words, it'll be a lot easier for an AoE spell to hit an invisible enemy than one of your brawlers.

Playing one right now. He's selfish and kind of hates people and gives his loyalty to one person at a time, for whom he's willing to murder babies. Fortunately nobody in the party is asking him to do that. So he's basically just a scout who has no qualms about killing baddies.
He's not even particularly bloodthirsty, just places no value on the lives of people other than his friends, and hates to be tied down geographically.
>>
>>53676032
You can still have friends as a chaotic evil guy, so it's possible to not be that guy. A chaotic evil guy is selfish and ruthless, but that doesn't mean he can't include immediate family and friends in his "selfish" desires, and be willing to do anything to protect his precious pawns/people.

Campaign is ending in about 3 sessions, and the party just recently acquired this artifact. They don't know the crunch yet, but is it too much? They're meant to be using it against the BBEG.

Gauntlets of the Storm

*Wondrous Item, Artifact*

Requires attunement.

While wearing these gauntlets, the wielder feels the strength of a Storm Giant. The wielder's strength changes to 29.
Once per day, the wielder may throw a Lightning Strike at a target location within 100 feet. Any creature within 10 feet of the location must make a DC 17 Dexterity Saving Throw or take 12d8 Lightning damage. A successful save reduces the damage by half.

It's such an easy alignment to play. How can people still mess this up?
>>
>>53676032
it's doable but difficult, and your average DnD player lacks the grace to pull it off.

It typically falls into the chaotic stupid trap:
>Party goes to buy some armor, CE guy stabs the shopkeep. lulz i'm so evil and random lolololol

This happens because the player (and DM) forgets that his character is still a person inside the setting, and the setting will/should respond appropriately. Murdered the shopkeep? Well, now your team either has to bring you in to the authorities or risk being accomplices to the crime. Once in the hand of the authorities, you will likely be put to death swiftly. In most towns, the concept of a "fair trial" is that they hang you, and let the townsfolk spit on your corpse.

A true Chaotic Evil person will act selfishly and take pleasure in the suffering of others, sure. But they will know that, even though they want to, they can't act on every impulse without great risk to themselves, and they love themselves, they aren't going to risk their life and freedom for fleeting pleasure unless they are absolutely sure they can get away with it. Out in the wilderness? yeah expect them to do anything they think the party will let them get away with (or not find out about). But in civilization? You bet your ass they'll reel that shit in.
>>
>>53676236

Any player that does stuff because "chaos is random" gets a serious talking-to.
But don't despair. I had a player new to the game on a CN character. First session was awful and I got complaints from everybody else. Sat down for a long talk with her and she's gotten better almost instantly and every session since.
Half a year later, she's greedy and impulsive (and a little cruel, actually; might be time to downgrade her to CE) but a fundamental member of the party involved in some of the best roleplaying.
>>
>>53676285
They're a party of level 7s that are meant to be dealing with an entire cabal of Vampires across 3 sessions, which means at minimum 6 more CR13 fights.

You need to be truly altruistic and want to help people, but you also need to respect freedom and autonomy.
There are many ways to play this:
1. "I fight against evil, especially oppression."
2. "Dismantling overbearing institutions is good for people whether they realize it or not."
3. "I'll help anyone, unless they don't want me to; that's their choice."
4. "I'll help anyone, but they gotta carry their own weight; individual empowerment is more important than comfort."
Etc. etc.
>>
>>53676606
Robin Hood during his outlaw days is CG. The Rebellion, especially Han after the destruction of the Death Star, are prime examples of CG. Typically CG is a transitory stage as a good force is more dedicated to opposing a dug in evil than establishing their own way. To play someone who would never change off that path is more practice. You don't care for law, tradition, or order. You won't go out of your way to oppose them unless they're evil but they do not factor into your thought process at all. CG is unique in that instead of the goal being chaos with the methods being good, the goal is good and the method is whatever you feel will bring the most good. You feel freedom is the path to happiness and that trying to stifle it and creativity are the path to oppression.

>>
>>53676837
Someone who isn't going to switch off CG once the rebellion is over is someone that would never make the attempt to run the government in the first place, he'd leave it to one of his or her NG/LG friends. If they got forced in they would go as hands-off as possible. You either change alignments due to changing situation or you find a new task for you and your talents.
>>
>>53676890
>Sure, but I don't know how you're going to get one to fit with your oath.
>Your patron is a powerful being of the Upper Planes. You have bound yourself to an ancient empyrean, solar, ki-rin, or unicorn or to another entity that resides in the planes of everlasting bliss. Your pact with that being allows you to experience the barest touch of the holy light that illuminates the multiverse. Being connected to such power can cause
changes in your behavior and beliefs. You might find yourself driven to annihilate the undead, to defeat fiends, and to protect the innocent. At times, your heart might also be filled with a longing for the celestial realm of your patron, a desire to wander that paradise for the rest of your days. But you know that your mission is among mortals for now and that your pact binds you to bring light to the dark places of the world.

Archfey aren't human enough to be "good." They have an entirely different spectrum of ideals and moral concepts that generally doesn't agree with what humans perceive as "good."
So a good warlock can deal with fey, but a paladin is more questionable, because they're supposed to follow their codes pretty damn closely, and dealing with these alien creatures can throw wrenches in that.

>>53676922
You can't really just "change alignments" like that. They're usually an inherent part of your worldview.
But I agree with your conclusion. A freedom fighter shouldn't try to transition to rulership. They should go freedom fight somewhere else, Che-Guevara-style (the ideal of Che Guevara, not the actual historical shithead).
>>

>Archfey aren't human enough to be "good."
Bullshit.
>>
>>53677008
>You can't really just "change alignments" like that. They're usually an inherent part of your worldview.
Robin Hood changed from CG to LG simply because Richard came home and knighted him. His good intentions went, over the course of a day, from opposing the law when it was cruel and unjust to supporting it when it was righteous and pure. While normally it is a major event to make the CN Han turn CG that requires them changing the way that they think and whole heaps of effort you do occasionally get the guy who was already straddling the line so well before that a small change in circumstance just makes what everybody thought previously official.
Also, whether something is 'human' enough to be the alignment we suppose them to be doesn't really matter. Cthulhu has his own way of thinking and may not even recognize us but that doesn't make him not CE from our perspective for preaching his madness.
>>
What do you guys think of weight rules/encumbrance?

Personally, I've never liked weight as a standard of how much you can carry, I prefer either simple slots or even turning inventory management into a minigame like in RE4.
>>
>>53677058
Not an argument.
Fiends are evil personified. Celestials are good personified. But fey come from the positive energy plane (->feywild), and have a fairly tenuous connection to the alignment system as a general rule.
>>
>>53677114
That's not how it works. If Robin Hood was always for proper and righteous institutions, then he was never Chaotic Good to begin with. You can be Lawful Good and fight against a corrupt government (it's in the alignment description).
If he was really Chaotic Good, he's assume a very hands-off attitude once in power.

Definitely not. Easily the most malleable ones, in fact. I love GOO from a GM perspective, as either the player can make a really creative cosmic horror, or I can do it if he doesn't want to.

And the shit you can do with such a patron is amazing.

Of course, you could say your patron is one of the actual evil old gods, but that's like saying a cleric is by default evil because evil gods exists.
