The minis themselves are going to be incredibly difficult to find. We're talking small, easily damageable/losable metal figurines that are thirty years old.

If there are any old timers in your meta you might be able to snag a bunch of old monopose 2nd/3rd edition Space Marine minis dirt cheap or even free though. Pick up some old Goblin Green paint and you'll have 99% of the experience of Rogue Trader models.

Alternately just use modern minis with RT rules. Other than the sizes there's no differences.

A noob question here. I've been playing fantasy for a while and some skirmish games but a lot of dudes in my local area are starting to buy 40k and organizing 40k related events. I've been looking trough the model range and I think I might be able to paint Krieg since their sculpts look very nice.

Well the main 4 active players are Orks (a new guy), Me with SoB, IG and Orks, one guy with Space Wolves and one guy with Traitor Legions. Genestealers (a freaking melee only unit) can potentially outrage Tau guns
Tau for comparison are the shootiest faction in the game.
Warriors are going to be good because no more Instant Death, the problem they had for the last couple of editions was that they just got instantly popped by krak missiles.
Also while not confirmed I'm pretty sure the venom cannon is going to be baller in 8th (both the small version and the MC version) because of the removal of templates, making it a D3 hit instead and probably D6 wound considering it's essentially a las cannon with less AP.

I'd say paint your gargoyles first, they're definitely a good unit to hone your skills on, then the warriors then finally the tyrant.

About 19 years ago I was 14 and on a vacation that involved a stop at the Eaton's Centre mall in Toronto. At the time a friend had been getting into Magic the Gathering, so thinking I'd get into it too, I walked into a store that I thought was any random gaming store.

Except that store was a GW store, and after talking with one of the guys there for a bit, looking around, and getting one of the old promotional booklets to flip through (the old 8 by 12 inch ones that were like 6-10 pages), it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that I was going to get into 40K instead of MtG.

After that it took a little while for the snowball to pick up speed on its way downhill, but aside from slowing down to a crawl at times, it hasn't stopped since.

Bought some Custodes to put together and paint before the hype gets too much, just for some hobby time

At the moment I was thinking about somehting like white-ish skin with blue lights and light blue chitin or brownish-bone, maybe with the joints as darker shade and black eyes. The fluff would be about a splinter that got stuck in a fucking ice planet for shitloads of years and had to completely redesign because temperature slowed down their metabolism so much that they could not just outnom everything in the planet so they initially got double teamed by the local ecosystem until they managed to devour it and get enough biomass to barely get the fuck out there, poor guys are starving though.

Going to take about 9 BS 3 lasgun shots to take one down. So a guard squad will be able to handle four genestealers. Honestly seems pretty do-able.

Also, you can probably use special weapon squads with flamers as your screening units, killing three and a half stealers per squad.
