A thread for arms and armor for sci-fi/science-fantasy settings.

Also, thread questions. Which of these would you prefer?

Your setting makes use of "smart matter" to generate bullets for you. It's not unlimited but vastly increases the amount of ammo you can carry.

Would this best accomplished through a magazine that had the technology integrated into it? (as in, the magazine will regenerate the bullets via smart matter when not connected to the weapon) The process is slower and you have to keep the magazines on hand with you. Or, you have a devices that can produce a disposable magzine with bullets in them but that reduces the amount of "Smart matter" used to create bullets because it has to create the magazine as well.

The idea of making new bullets on the spot seems sort of jarring. If you already have the matter anyway, why are you not just carrying it in bullet form to begin with?

Unless your gun has multiple firing modes, like a Judge Dredd gun, in which case being able to keep your options open with a universal ammo makes some kind of sense.

The clever solution is something you wear on your belt or back where you plug in a magazine and it fills it with new bullets. Instead of treating the magazine as disposable and creating a new one every time, you just fill that up and plug it in.

This way you can have two magazines and swap between them. The one your gun is using, and the one that is filling up from the ammodock.

>The idea of making new bullets on the spot seems sort of jarring. If you already have the matter anyway, why are you not just carrying it in bullet form to begin with?

I would think that depends on the situation. If you know you're going to be far away from a potential resupply of the smart matter then it makes sense to make the bullets already in case something happens to the machine that does it.

On the otherhand, I could see such a system for short duration missions. You carry more ammo without wasting space on your person to carry them thus allowing you to carry more of other stuff.

This all depends on what you can do with the "smart matter" bullets and how customizable they are. It makes sense to have a standard mold and something upscale that lets you create different bullet types as well (i.e having something that can make both buck shot and solid slugs for example)

I just had a super silly idea!

What if there was this revolver with 7 shots, and when you cocked the hammer the barrel would spin and on the side would be something like 777, -bar-, joker, ect.!

And each shot would do a different thing! And if somebody says, lol, thats stupid, you just say nano-nano! (nanotech! Its the wave of the future!)

Destiny, the setting where you go the image and I assume concept from, seems to utilize disposable magazines. However I would assume that the material that went into these magazines is recycled and not actually thrown away, so there wouldn't really be any net loss vs only replicating the bullets.

>>53209218
Destiny is all over the place especially when you look at guns like MIDAS multi tool where the actual placement of the magazine doesn't corrolate with the bullets going into the chamber. Then again I just assume the magazine powers the gun and allows it to make bullets in the chamber hence no casings popping out of it. Neverminding the Zhalo Super Cell

Every single hand cannon in destiny, even stuff like the Last Word, have magazines somehow. You pop an entire cylinder out of the gun and put a new one in.

I assume it's some kind of smart matter, given the entire City seems to run on the stuff.

It's recoil operated, the barrel and cylinder go back from the recoil to turn the cylinder and re-cock the hammer.

I remember reading a science fiction book by some italian dude where all guns had been condensed into a single rifle-like device.

These rifles were fed bars of metal that fitted into the rifle much like a modern magazine does, but the metal itself was the material being consumed by the gun as it fired.

What mattered was that these metal bars could be programmed via a computer located inside the brain of the soldiers linked up with their rifles in order to create any kind of ammo instantaneously, things like flechettes, incendiary, miniature rockets, explosives, subsonic or whatever.

That by itself was pretty cool, but there was one part I particularly liked where the protagonist programs his rifle to fire in two bursts, converting the first into an explosive while the second was fired as a hail of flechettes in order to overcome the problem of dealing with an enemy that makes use of some sort of energy shield that regenerates instants after being knocked down.

That's kind of what I imagine this kind of "universal ammo" would be used for, instant exchanging of ammunition without needing to reload or change weapons.

These threads have come up from time to time. The biggest problem is ultimately how to handle classes/subclasses and things like skills.
>>
>>53210035

Crota was daddy's littel failure.

He wasn't nearly as awesome as his two sisters who not only developed the Death Song but also developed a number of technologies such as the the giant sphere that makes it harder to kill you as well as the super weapon that Oryx uses in the intro where he fights the Reef Born awoken.

There is a story where Oryx lets a Wizard into his court because she literally ran circles around Crota after he said he could fuck her up no problem.

And finally, thinking he was being smart like his sisters, he cut open a hole in their father's throne world that let the vex in in the first place (this was actually Savathun's doing as she tricked Crota into doing it). He and his sisters tried to fight them off but it took Oryx coming back and curb stomping them to get the vex out finally and Oryx picked Crota up by the legs and threw his ass in the hole saying "Come back a champion or don't come back at all!"
>>
>>53210102
and those thousands of Guardians that Crota slew during the war for the Moon? apparently, back then, Guardians were a lot more numerous, but a lot less powerful. his one major victory in our system is killing a bunch of near-normals with an army at his back and trapping six under-prepared Guardians under the surface of the Moon--and he couldn't even kill more than four of them.

Toland is still jetting around his Oversoul pocket dimension and he hasn't even squashed him after all that time.
>>
>>53210136
>Guardians were a lot more numerous, but a lot less powerful.

>>
>>53210136
Toland was in Oryx's throne world too. I think they were keeping him as a pet or something.
>>
>>53210136
>Guardians were a lot more numerous, but a lot less powerful.
Could you cite that please? Not doubting that your right but I haven't come across anything saying that the older generation of guardians are less powerful.
>>
>>53210136

It's not that they were less powerful, They just had no idea what they were getting into. When Shaxx encountered them he immediately tried to stop them from doing the raid because they weren't prepared for the way the Hive fought and they paid for it dearly.

Toland though twisted was the guy who knew what the fuck was up but he certainly let his curiosity get ahead of him such that he wanted to get his booty call with Ir Yut and he got it which allows him to swim around in the Hive Netherrealm

>>53210154
He wasn't being kept as a pet, he's just hanging out there and can still talk to us and I firmly beilieve he still talks to Eris via the rock she carries around.
>>
>>53209911
Look at this stupid piece of crap. It's using the format of the bullpup p90, but the ammo and barrel have been forced past the trigger. Not to mention the barrel itself is actually shorter here. You've got a weapon with twice the length with the accuracy of a pistol at best, using absurdly sized ammo for that length that isn't going to hit a damn thing.beyond 20m or so. Utter garbage.

nothing i can point to offhand but i remember vaguely reading something that said it. plus everything you hear about past Guardians, especially Rezyl Azzir, suggests that they struggled with basic enemies--a few Acolytes, a Knight, and a Wizard; Rasputinian Frames; Vandals--and any major manipulation of Light, like supers, is treated as a major event. which i admit is likely mostly writing flair, but still.

and it makes sense, considering that Guardians tap directly from the Traveller. the more Guardians, the less Traveller tap.

For the game mechanics the different sub classes are segregated with individual abilities but lore wise there's nothing that says you can't know these abilities all at once. Hell, One of the Iron Lords who was a warlock did a Titan Shoulder charge and outright says he learned it from Jolder who was a Titan. That said, there's nothing stopping you from hyperfocusing on a specific set of powers to become a really powerful user of a subclass but I imagine it more like how you have a wizard who uses a number of spells from different schools as opposed to just being a necromancer or a summoner for example.

>>53210078
The way I've handled classes and subclasses is to make Titan/Hunter/Warlock main classes, while all of the subclasses are specializations that you pick during character creation.

Like I said I never really made a ton of progress, I kept putting it down for months at a time. I've got even less typed up, most of it is just notes and ideas jotted down. I did come up with a character sheet at least, and I can look around for some of the class stuff I've got typed up if people are actually interested at all.

Neat, seems like a good jumping off point for a lot of stuff.

I've been thinking of a homebrew system for Destiny esepcially in light of the new stuff that came out with Age of Triumph.

A big part of that would be a seperate skill set called Arcana which represents your very focused knowledge of a specific subject that not only allows you to access specific powers but also affects your social standing.

For example, Toland and Eris Morn would have the Highest Arcanda: Hive of anyone in the setting. This obviously makes them not very well liked to regarded by everyone else but also lets them use Hive Magic as Eris literally uses a spell to teleport us out of a death trap during Crota's Death Ceremony.

This also depends on where in the time line you run the game because only in the settings recent history are Hunters/Titans/Warlocks actually codified as a thing where as before they didn't refer to themselves as such. Felwinter was a warlock but used a Titan ability . Rezyl Azir was a Titan but the cards about him say he was a Titan before the idea of Titans became a thing and we see him running around with a Hunter's cloak (which he most likely took off of a hunter he killed).

so there is flexibility for a TTRPG I believe.

It probably would be better to categorize myth and lore into less general domains, however I felt like the skill list was already getting out of hand. Doing separate eras would be tricky, since we have so much less info about what was going on in the pre-city days. For things being flexible though, one could just use the EotE rules there. Which let you aquire talents/abilities from other classes at twice the normal cost.

Anyway, any questions about what you see on the sheet? I'd be happy to go more in depth on anything.

Possibly if all the stats are needed.

Personally I've been trying to figure out how to use Defense/Strength/Discipline/Intellect. I just like the idea of them being linked to various stats rather than emulating the stat arrays of games like DnD.
>>
>>53210684
The text is hilarious.
>>
>>53210940
I didn't really think too much of trying to replicate stats exactly as they are in the game, but one idea I did toy around with was having attributes come entirely from worn equipment like they do in the game. I'm not sure though, feels like something that would heavily limit what you can do build wise.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about trying to emulate the game to much. If anything only very very specific pieces of armor and weapons should have any particular special changes to anything rather than the way they have it in the game. That and it makes those bits and pieces special in that regards (not to mention you can make up exotic armors and weapons for your own purposes)
>>
>>53211059
I'd have it so GMs could run it whatever way they liked. They could either run it as a look grind game where you are regularly getting progressively better gear, advancing through common/uncommon/rare/legendary weaponry and armor just like the game. Or they could have gear be special with drops being few and far between, with guardians basically only getting common and then legendary/exotic stuff without the filler inbetween.

Because you aren't making bullets.
You are scraping metal from a metal storage, that is the ammo. So bullet type basically is variances on launch speed and grain size.

So you are basically using a railgun, with a mechanism to scrape of metal and put it into the launch zone.
Its one of those things Mass Effect got right. Just a fucking shame the franchise couldn't keep up the quality for another 2 more games.

I mean, I get it's the fact that the story is rather seperated from the game itself in the form of Grimoire cards which would be fine had it not been for the fact you had to look outside the game to access them. And even then the main game didn't convey it's plot very well for the most part although I felt they were learning from their mistakes at least all things considering how the story was changed from their original version with the Traveller being secretly evil and what not.

I hope with Destiny 2 they'll have more in game story tell that is augmented by the griomire cards as well as having the actual guardian be more of a character again rather then a mannequin that wears our armor and weapons.

Mass Effect guns worked using a block of matter that got tiny fragments shaved/fragmented off it for bullets, which were then accelerated via a small mass effect field to be shot. You only had to replace the block out pretty infrequently (never, in terms of gameplay) and only had to worry about overheating.

Well, a vibro sword would be one idea.

I had an idea for power armored soldiers that used vibro cutting tools used to cut the hauls of ships but repurposed into a weapon. It basically worked like a turkey carver only far more rugged.

You could probably get really fancy with the idea somehow like some kind of metal that will vibrate rapidly when exposed to a certain frequency or something like that.
>>
>>53217111
Theres a book series I read where they have knives (they call "bioware blades") with a channel along the blade about .5 cm in from the edge, and if that part hits flesh it releases an agent, either chemical or biological, that can be incapacitating or extra lethal. The one I remember had "Adoracion Hemorrhagic Fever", a disease that caused all your blood vessels to burst over the course of 5 min or so.

A liquid you keep is a special sheath, it gives a blade a mono molecular edge, effectively turning it into a light saber. needs to be redipped every few swings to keep the edge.

only works on blades created to work with the liquid.

I was thinking for an idea like this albeit with far more magic involved. Basically it would be an alchemical way to have the typical "magic sword"

You have a special blade and sheath that takes in replaceable resevoir of a blade oil that activates when you draw the blade. One oil causes the blade to super heat in contact with the air. Another is to have a special stone that stores kinetic energy in the hilt and then releases it into the blade and another was to have blades with tiny holes to pour essentially liquid nitrogen into the wound

Piezoelectric motors in the gauntlet automatically react every time a punch is landed, forcefully ejecting a compact shaped charge from a dispenser that runs the length of the forearm. The explosive sticks to the adversary through a nanotechnological adhesion pad, and can be fused to detonate after a set time (milliseconds to seconds) or when it reaches a certain distance from the dispenser, giving the wielder the opportunity to get some distance.

Will blast through powered armor, light armored fighting vehicles, and most doors and barriers. Will vaporize unarmed opponents. Learning less conventional hand-to-hand techniques like push kicks can be useful for opening up gaps between the enemy to allow the safe detonation of the shaped charge. Fighting style prioritizes opening holes in the opponent's guard, hitting vital areas (power plants, sensors, pilots), controlling the distance of the fight (especially keeping a distance from similarly armed adversaries), and drills for rapidly reloading the dispenser and clearing jams in combat.

Aren't revolvers notorious for being one of the heaviest handguns in the world with regards to firepower? Wouldn't a 9mm, the pistol used by the us armed services because of women being introduced, be more fitting?
>>
>>53255347

Uh, revolvers are chambered in a rainbow of such wildly varying cartridges that the power & recoil are the least consistent things about them.

There are even, *gasp*, revolvers in 9mm exactly like the handguns!

Actually .357 magnum is a 9mm cartridge too, although it's rimmed and has more powder capacity. You can load it identically if you wanted to.

Also 9mm was not introduced for female shooters. That's just hilariously wrong, for two reasons:
1. There were no female combatants when it was introduced in 1902 and used in WW1.
2. The US handgun in 9mm, the M9, has an Xbox Heug grip that is uncomfortable unless you have bigger, manlier hands than most male soldiers and Marines.

No, SJW is the word I use for the guy who, as president of the Science Fiction Writers of America, arranged to not give Hugos in key categories one year because otherwise books and short stories by conservatives or Libertarians would win. And I don't mean alt-right radicals, I'm talking moderate center right writers who'd happened to win. If a liberal can't win, then fuck the fans and fuck the writers, in Scalzi's world.

I love liberal writers like Clarke, Asimov, Silverberg, etc., but Scalzi's the first to actually wage war against his fellow writers on the basis of ideology. Even Harlan Ellison, who is a raging ideologue, would never have crossed that line.

What do you think about melee focused scifi worlds?
I got this idea, where the planet is super rough and rocky (or something like that), there's barely any flat surface, so close quarters fighting in tight spaces is what usually occurs. This places a greater emphasis on mobility and melee/close quarters combat, which is why you can see dudes in jetpacks swinging electric swords and stuff like that. Guns still exist, but the most common ones are small carbines or handguns.
>>
>>53262466
I just have the amor in my setting be too much for military-grade armor outside of support weapons (which are crazy shit like small casaba howitzers and c-fractional railguns), so you only see small arms in security/police situations, while when the big boys play, your seeing a medley of futuristic swords, axes, and war picks, complemented by suit-mounted micro missiles and fuck-off huge support guns.
>>
>>53210886
Did you not hear that a Cabal Battleship reactor could vape HALF the solar system? Cabal own a large chunk of the Milky Way.
>>
>>53262466
It's fun and welcome change

In a setting with guns, I feel you must establish a requisite for:
speed, safety, stealth, or scarcity (not exclusive 'or')
These are the situations that allow non-ballistics.
Speed is what happens when people can leap around and scare the everloving fuck out of each other by "jumping" into melee range. Surprise!
Safety is "M.A.D."--if a ballistic misses its target, it risks killing everyone, like in some smaller space vehicles. Or, in a Dune type of way, detonating a man-bomb.
Stealth is old as time. Even suppressed gunfire will make noise.
Scarcity is cost, and this is why many post-apoc settings abstain from plentiful gunplay.

I use alliteration a lot in my RPG design so please forgive me
