why did gw never update beastmen/bretonnia/skaven army books?
>>
>>53203018
>I never realized shitposters could be so legalistic.

Welcome to the internet. And yes, the distinctions are important. By calling it Warhammer Fantasy Battles and/or not excluding the End Times/Age of Sigmar setting, you cannot claim that the shitposters are breaking any rules, because, well, they're not.
>>
Is there a list of official end times rules that override previous rules but not the optional shit like khaine magic and undead legions etc
>>
>>53203263
Why do they think that adding the word "Battle" to the thread entitles them to discuss games that are not WFB? I can understand trying to weasle the end times shit into the thread since technically, that is part of Fantasy Battle, but AoS is a completely separate game and has its own general anyway.

If you see any attention-seeking retards trying to shitpost AoS in this thread, just report and then ignore them.

This might sound like a total noob question regarding war gaming in general, but do people normally make up some kind of cheat-sheet to keep track of all of their units' stats? It seems like it would be a bit of a pain to have to reference a book or PDF and do the math every time you need to make a roll.
>>
>>53203352
If the game is not mentioned in the opening post, then this is not the thread to discuss it in. Take your cancer somewhere else (as long as it's not the 40k general).
>>
>>53204011

>>

>>
>>53204088
Nice. I didn't know Battlescribe let you print.
>>
>>53204011
the armybooks had a page in the back where each of the unit's stats were detailed

you also could just make your own especific for your army
>>
>>53202929

500 point of lord, actually.

This usually means 1 lord, but most armies can fiddle around to bring a level 4 spellcaster and a good-ish combat lord (expecially horde armies like Skaven or Bestmen).
>>
>>53204268
It's mostly all the potential / conditional modifiers I'm worried about. That stuff is easy to keep track of in an RPG where you have a character sheet, but in a war game you have a bunch of different units and there's not a standard equivalent of a character sheet to keep track of them with.
>>
>>53203208

Beastmen and bretonnia because they were honestly a mess, and needed a big overhaul (even if all that the beastmen needed was access to marks and a bit of discount on troops).

Skaven was probably scheduled late, since their 7th edition army book was published right before 8th edition hit the shelves.

The problem that happens when people don't make a new thread before the old one falls off page 10 is that it means no-one can post a link to the new thread in the old one, which means that people who had the old thread in their favorites / bookmark won't have a link to the new thread in the archived old thread. If they go to look for the new thread manually, it might be an hour or two before anyone bothers making a new one because everyone expects someone to make the new thread without having to do it themselves.

I don't know the first thing about making post bots to get OPs queued up, other than that it would require a 4chan pass to work. I think what we need is some community responsibility-- if you enjoy these generals and you're the first to notice that the current one is past the bump limit, has fallen past page 5, and no-one has made a new thread yet, rather than simply asking if someone is going to make a new thread just go ahead and post one. As long as you don't do something stupid like unilaterally fuck with the OP rules and/or mention ET or AoS nothing bad is going to happen.
>>
>>53204973
*I should append that the one instance in which it's okay to mention End Times in the OP is to say "no End Times."

>>
>>53204973
I get what you're saying, but it's fine if things are languishing for a little while before a new thread is made. I remember there was a point where threads were so slow and even dying there was serious consideration of just making /wfb/ a weekend general. Compared to that, a few hours without isn't that bad.

But yes, people just making threads if they see there's no thread is a good idea. At worst you get another thread that causes confusion for a bit until one's decided to be the one people want to post in. But I don't feel like that actually needs to be said most of the time.

>>53205058
Might've been like the scenario that supposedly happened to squats - they didn't know what to do with them since they'd backed themselves into a creative corner. Only they didn't technically repeat the Squats mistake because they probably were planning on killing off the setting by that point, and it was more okay to drag those factions along til the end.

Please remember is that the best option is ignoring shit, not fanning it further.

If I can be a stupid faggot, I legitimately cannot understand how the Dark Elves are supposed to have even a somewhat cohesive kingdom, and armies that don't devolve into backstabbery in the middle of the campaign/battle. It's like everything they're known for is suddenly off the table when they're fighting, which really only makes sense in a 'work together to survive against overwhelming odds' scenario.

I think wfb threads hit their all-time low sometime following GW's abandoning of the game, but they have been climbing back upwards since then. I remember back then I was trying to keep them going and kind of gave up on it, and then I came back a month or so ago and to my surprise these threads have been a pretty regular staple on /tg/ again, which filled me will all kinds of joy and motivation to do Warhammer stuff again. I think Total Warhammer was a huge shot of medicine in the arm for the community because it's got people talking an excited about Warhammer Fantasy again, which has spilled over into the table top games even though GW doesn't support them anymore.

Alternatively, yes some people would photocopy the references. I would sometimes do this for games I played irregularly.

I would just basecoat the banner, lightly drybrush it until the desired texture, draw the banner itself with a "fine-tip pen" (or with the finest brush I could find) with the highlight colors prevalent in the army, and last unify it with a shade of choice

Those elves are looking great, especially so for Rank&File troops, keep it up anon!

The heavy layering you've done on the banner is actually very impressive, much better than the classic coat/wash I see so often. Looks like a Blanche illustration, almost. If you don't want to freehand, you can always look into transfer decals. That said, keep experimenting with the background of the flag as it is now, I think you're on to something.

Yup. I enjoyed reading how the end of the world would play out. Knowing how it ends (as it inevitably would at some point, all worlds do) doesn't invalidate the whole timeline before it.

I'm still totally happy to set stories and campaigns in the world before the End Times, it's a pretty long timeline with plenty of room to do whatever. End Times eventually happening doesn't invalidate my dudes any more than (for example) the Siege of Terra eventually happening invalidates playing and telling stories of the Horus Heresy.

The problem is, we did have an alternative setting in a post storm of chaos scenario that up until ET was the canon setting (ie. 7th and 8th edition were just set before the SoC). So for anyone playing Role-play 2nd edition their character and setting have been invalidated.

So I think it's perfectly fine if people want to forget ET ever existed.

I don't really know what to tell you. A town or village getting razed adds weight to the battles being fought, and even big cities like Altdorf or Nuln can risk getting invaded. Normal dudes are important because they're the guys making up your armies, and they're the civilians that you're fighting for at home, or are being threatened by an attack. If you can't care about that, you aren't forced to, but then you're just bashing armies together without even any fictional stakes to the fight to make it more fun or interesting.

That actually would have been a better explanation. Steam tanks would make more sense if there were at least 50-100 of them spread throughout the empire in various states of repair
>>

>>53217688
It's not so much the bridge of bones (although that would need to be a hell of a bridge), it's the fact that the Tomb King managed an invasion on the scale of Grom the Paunch or Gorbad Ironclaw by entering the Empire in the south and moving all the way up to Reikland at the heart of the Empire to sack two specific cities. Except this invasion, unlike, say, the Vampire Wars or the Great War Against Chaos is only mentioned in a tiny sidebar designed to give Tomb Kings an excuse to fight the Empire.

Asavar Kul, with all the might of the chaos hordes only managed to sack Praag before being destroyed. But some Literally Whotep got right to Altdorf because he was pissed about someone breaking his stuff.

Some of the best moments of Warhammer Fantasy are when there's times of peace.

40k is a perpetual state of war, and while Chaos always wants to kill everyone who isn't on their side and the Orcs are hostile-neutral at best and the Skaven always want to overthrow everyone up top, the other nations of the world aren't always at war.

It's a popular misconception that in WHF everyone is at war all the time.

Even in 40k the Imperium's made truces and even temporary alliances with the Eldar and Tau in the past, and some Ork groups offer services as mercenaries and traders to these three factions as well.

WHF especially isn't perpetual, unending war, it's just that when war happens it's brutal and lasts a long time, the most recent exception being the Storm of Chaos where Archaon the Neverchosen fucked up worse than Abbadon and had the biggest invasion force of Chaos in a long time get wiped out because of the sheer willpower of the hummens and their alliance.

BTFO'd in just over a year.

It's not that a lack of war automatically means peace - there's still greenskin attacks, beastmen raids, small cases of civil strife or cult activity. It's just not that there's always a war going on between every faction all the time - there's a distinct difference between a Chaos invasion and Norse coastal raiding, or Bretonnia and the Empire having a few border skirmishes and an outright war.

the best Felix and Gotrek Stories happened previous to the SoC.

The most interesting stories are always of Adventurers exploring an arduous world, instead of shitty mary sues and their self pitying road to world ending.

>There's over 2000 years of imperial history and even more for all the other factions. All but the major events are just sidebars
Sure, but an army of animated statues marching all the way from Nehekhara, crossing the Black Mountains on a magic bridge of bones, moving up through the Empire's most populous provinces and then sacking two cities near the capital surely counts as a 'major event'.

It's obvious what happened. Someone wanted an excuse for the Tomb Kings to invade the Empire. They thought of a cool little story, picked some names off the map, placed it far enough in the past that it didn't fuck anything up too much and called it a job well done.
The problem is, it doesn't make any sense geographically and it's not building off any pre-existing background. It's just there. Random and unelaborated on.

>Yeah, all those novels and campaign supplements about peasants farming or noble intrigue in court are so riveting

So I was discussing in /wip/ >>53221110 the possibility of making a customized Mortis Engine with a pipe organ and a Warhammer version of the Phantom of the Opera driving it in place of a Necromancer. I have some ideas for how to do the model and am getting some suggestions in /wip/, but I want to know what you guys' thoughts are regarding lore for this character, because lore and fluff are fun.

Here's the basic idea I have so far. Make whatever suggestions you want, this is just some loose ideas.

>The Phantom was born with a facial disfigurement. After years of being mocked for his appearance, he devoted himself to music, to the point that he started performing dark magic involving the blood of young women in order to become a master.
>He ended up impressing the Von Carnsteins with his skill. Vlad employed him as maestro of his court orchestra, and eventually the Von Carnsteins made him into a vampire so that they could listen to his music forever.
>Unfortunately, because the phantom was disfigured from birth, his deformity carried with him into immortality, so he still wears a mask.
>He spent the years following his transformation perfecting the dark magic of music, and uses its power to aid his masters from atop a mortis engine.
>He still uses his music to seduce young women so that he may use them for his dark rituals, further developing the power of his music.

The idea of the disfigurement carrying over into vampirism is a bit extreme considering vampires can either reshape themselves or change the impression they give to people with a passive charm
I don't know how soon a vampire begins mastering these powers but I don't know how much time the phantom spent as a vampire either

otherwise it's solid, go for it

7th edition magic was much more balanced because wizards only got to use their own power dice + the two free dice, so you couldn't take extra wizards just to generate more dice for your level 4. don't mind the shitposter anon, my thought is if you don't want your empire guys to be a single loadout magnetise them.

In regards to enemies though, you will find crossbowers crunchwise better than handgunners against skaven and O&G , but handgunners in theory better against ogres.

However, do whatever's fun anon. if you really want 2 handgunner units no ones going to stop you just keep in mind they aren't as meta as you think as the move or shoot rule really hurts.. perhaps as a suggestion, unless one of the crossbowmen units is a mage bunker just run heaps of detachments of 5 unupgraded handgunners and or/xbowers as needed.

what else are you running btw? post pics?

In that case it's also known as 'The Empire of the Dragon' or 'the Grand Empire of Cathay.' Not treading on the toes of the idea of a human empire, technically.

Could also be 'Empire of Man, made by/for mankind' whereas Cathay was made by the Dragon Emperor, who is arguably an actual dragon.

Could also be that the setting is so Old World focused and the name of the Empire has become so iconic they just can't change it.

That's an awesome idea. If I do this project I will definitely try that.

If the disfigurement carrying over to his vampire form is too extreme I suppose it could go. Having the disfigurement prior would have definitely influenced his personality though, and perhaps he still wears the mask as a reminder. Basically he'd have been like the phantom from the novel before the transformation, and retains the persona afterwards.
>>53230826
I like that too. I think it's cool that in September the Vampire Counts are seen as something very eerie and mysterious to everyone else, even though it's accepted as fact that they exist. There could be a pied piper aspect to his character, also.
>>
>>53230756
hah well anon I can see it's not a competitive shit list army(which is fine anon) , are you fighting opponents who are also playing for fun/building their armies with you?

I'd still say run at least one lot of those shooting units as crossbowmen and then one as handgunners.

I really would reccomend a warrior priest though the reason being "3 things make the empire great, faith steel and gunpowder"
(your units will be torn to shit without a warrior priest buffing them by the massed ranks), stick him in the spearmen unit I guess as it's your biggest.

also anon in the meantime while you paint your army you could run the regiments of renown event pack gametype for 8th, which is 100points small scale battles.Every unit is individual, really really fun and good for getting people used to the basic rules of the game

could you post some pics of your empire guys anon? I'll post some of mine I did yesterday if you like.
>>
>>53230966
competent art direction
>>
>>53229566

I've played Empire as my main army for a while, and sadly despite handgunners being one of our iconic units they aren't very good. The short range really hampers them and makes them not worth the cost against most enemies.

So I would definitely make at least one of these units crossbowmen. I would keep them as two blocks of 10 also. Again, the Hochland long rifle is a really cool bit of kit but not that great when you think of how many cannons an Empire army would normally have. So I generally give them a musician and that's it.

As for using them, detachments is okay, another alternative is to sit them back with the artillery and use them to deflect chaff that might try to hunt your cannons.

It's just assertion. The Byzantine Empire had an Emperor, not a king, which assumed a universality, ie. the Byzantines saw themselves as the only true Christian empire and hoped that one day they would unite all Christendom by the Pope and the Orthodox church mending the schism.

This is all it comes down to, the Empire of Sigmar sees itself as the successor of the previous great empires and that all other empires are pretenders.
>>
>>53231175

>>
>>53230960
that's why 6th ed has the best lore, and anything that sounds iffy or skubby can be handwaved as biased narration or unreliable source.
>>

If you mean the Empire united by Magnus the Pious, then your point has some serious merit.

But otherwise, there were no empires before Sigmar, at least not in the Old World. The dwarves and elves both land and colonies there, but I'm not sure they were ever considered an Empire that Sigmar could act as successor of.

Which also brings up an interesting point - how would the Elves in particular handle colonies? Are they considered extensions of the home kingdoms? Are they their own political units?

Actually 'The Empire of Man' does make a lot of sense when you consider how deeply influenced the cult of sigmar and the early empire were by their alliance with the dwarfs. Sigmar could very well have sold his overlordship to chieftains he subjugated by going hey, the high king thing works for the little guys.

Even so it;s obvious the term is just another of hte 40k influences that crept into fantasy, but there's nothing to be done about that. I remember a time when warrior priests of sigmar weren't transparently space marines, but what does it matter? It's all dead and gone now.

I just mean aesthetically. In their initial Warhammer Quest and Mordheim appearances (priests of sigmar existed before in wfrp, but this is where they start getting minis and a unified look) they were much less imposing middle aged cleric guys.

With every new gen of the WFB models warrior priests got balder and buffer and their armour got bulkier especially around the shoulders, and I'm quite sure it was down to the popular spess mahreens brand spilling over from 40k. Possibly unconscious, but it was definitely a trend.

not to defend Sotrmacsts, but men come in two types: showers and growers. Formers' dicks are almost as huge when flaccid as when erect, the latters' dicks are small when flaccid but expand greatly when erect. Average erect size is still the same.

When you genetically modify your warriors it makes sense to make them "growers", so the dicks don't take as much space in armor and are a smaller vulnerable target when not in direct use.

>>
We should have destroyed Norsca, every man woman and child, many years ago!

*shouting*

Enough! Dietershafen is lost, and our northern allies have failed us. Where was the last report of his whereabouts?

My spies tell me that his forces have moved to the east, we must expect an attack on Erengrad!

This is nonsense, no attack is coming - Kislev controls Troll Country. He's not attacking, he's making allies! At this very moment he courts the One-Eye, the Beastmen! The warherds will rise up against us and the Drakwald will be lost once more!

Ridiculous! Middenland won't stand for it! Our forces have sole military access to their forests. I believe the attack will come from the Chaos Wastes themselves - he intends to travel across the World's Edge Mountains, and into Ostermark - Sylvania will revolt, and sweep across from the east

Thats wild speculation!

He will come not from the north, nor the east - our traders in the south report that he has forged an alliance with the tribes of the Bjornling. He intends to circumnavigate the Empire and sail his army-

To the Badlands perhaps!

He would lose half his army to attrition alone! The other half would desert!

We must defend Blackfire Pass!

And do you expect the orcs to welcome him when he arrives?

I suppose he will bring with hem, an army of Chariots!

Elector Counts, I dare say that would be quite a feat, even for the great Surtha Ek.

How will they represent the magic of High Elves and Slann - two of the most powerful magic-using forces in the whole of WFB - in Total Warhammer 2?

So far it's been relatively tame, but is this their chance to really make things crazy and have it still be within the lore?
>>
>>53258200
No no, red pill me on their rules.
>>
Did CA singlehandedly save WFB from irrelevance?

I played Mordheim, Vermintide and Corsairs as well but they feel like nothing compared to the Total War game in the terms of relevance.
>>
>>53251819
well if you look closely at the lizard reveal we got skinks,
bastilladons(not mounted)
the lazer mounted on the bastilladons
saurus
saurus 2h
saurus riders
temple guard
flying skinks.

so at least that much.
>>
>>53264540
Total War is a pretty major series - of course it'll attract a lot of attention. And it has a luxury that a lot of other WFB games don't have, of getting to depict each race roughly equally, instead of a few nods one way or a few characters another, or having a whole faction just be NPCs.

However, I can't really say that it saved WFB from irrelevance on its own - there were times where the WFB flame ebbed low, and Total Warhammer was long since out. I think at best it saved this general from irrelevance, since you had a ton of people from /vg/ going 'well now I gotta learn about the lore' or getting shoved off by people who didn't wanna talk fantasy or something. And it's still not quite the best depiction of the Warhammer setting.
