Pathfinder General /pfg/

Let's talk about Perform! What good things have you done with Perform that WEREN'T just using it as part of a class feature? Like, legit, default uses of Perform. Have you ever put on huge shows and gotten famous?

The synethesia gas trap from the emerald spire floor 3 gave me some ideas for using it as a date rape drug on one of the players. It crosses sensory information so that you feel what you see, you see smells, and you smell what you hear, etc. Im gonna have the cleric of the level date-rape one of the captive pcs just for fun.

Am I doing this right? We're in agreement to do the scene, but I put in the drug use as a suprise.

I've used Perform (Oratory) checks to inspire a crowd to overthrow their corrupt monarchy so we could loot the town for the mcguffin while everyone was occupied.
>>
>>53192117
I've scored a 108 on a Perform (Dance) check in combat thanks to exploding dice houserules.

Proceeded to use it as my AC (Thanks, Mithral Current), traverse the entire battlefield in a single turn (Thanks, Mithral Current), draw an AOO from every enemy and be missed every time (Thanks, Mithral Current), and deal around two thousand points of net damage in the process (Thanks, Mithral Current).

>still two weeks on apps

what did he mean by this
>>
>>53192646
It's really good but the antipaladin's oath makes it bad for group play.

The fear aura is basically a "the enemies start dropping spaghetti" button.
>>
>>53192646
It's Paladin but Evil.
>>
>>53192646
Its really good as far as evil classes go. Its even better if you are undead so you can use a swift action to heal yourself every turn
>>
>>53192646
You mean Insinuator/Tyrant, right?

Because those are the only archetypes that make Antipaladin playable. Not mechanically playable, but actually playable in a party with other non-evil party members
>>

I'm not particularly worried about others, as I'm pretty sure the only other player will follow my lead if I go full Hitler.

A player comes to you with this story for their character. How do you react?

Svara grew up the daughter of a senator in The Spire. She was always in the shadows of her two older twin brothers, Brafor and Chast. Her father was never around, always working, or drinking, or sleeping with some woman of the night. The children were contained to the house with their mother. Svara’s mother was always an obsessive parent. Stern and overly careful, she devoted every moment of her attention to her children-- mostly her sons. She loved her sons and would do anything for them. She would spoil them by buying them anything they desired, hiring the best cooks to keep them fed, managing every detail of their lives to befit one of ease, safety, and comfort. They had private teachers who groomed them for a life in politics. Svara was granted none of this love. She was much younger than her brothers, and looked much more like her father than her mother. She was denied school and was sent to do housekeeping tasks with the maids each day. The maids were strict and cruel and gave her no privileged treatment.

cont.
>>
Has anyone used a kaiju in their game?
>>
>>53192761
One day when Svara was 12 years old, her brothers were mugged and beaten to death in the street on one of the few nights they were permitted to leave the house premises. Her mother went into a deep despair. Sometimes pretending, or forgetting, that the sons had died. Other times she would just sit and weep. Sometimes she would do nothing at all except stare into the fireplace for an entire day. At one point she began speaking to different mystics and sorcerers in the city. She was researching something; Obsessed with finding more information. Then one day, about 3 months after the death of her sons, she packed Svara into a horse cart and rode with her into the Black Flats. Svara’s memories of what happened there are foggy and confused. She recalls leaving with her mother. She remembers screaming and kicking that she didn’t want to go until her mother made one of the guards bind her limbs. Then her memories become dark and clouded. When she tries to remember what happened, she gets stricken with a deep visceral fear. She tries not to think about it too often anymore. The next thing she remembers is waking up in the crpyts beneath the Elven city of Trovine.

When she awoke there was a small, glowing girl with wings tending to her wounds. She thought she was dreaming at first as she faded in and out of consciousness. After a few days she had recovered. This is how Svara first met Echo. Echo was a pixie who lived in crypts. She saw Svara ride in on horseback and collapse into the dirt. She was covered with cuts on the right side of her body. Two bleeding stumps of horns were pushing through the peak of her head. A short, stubby tail pressed out from the base of her spine. Echo used her magic to help heal Svara.

cont.
>>
>>53192772
Svara had slept in the dirt for a week. Eating small pieces of meat that Echo brought her and drinking the water which dripped down the rough cut stone walls. Svara named the pixie echo because as they spoke in the crypts their voices would carry for what seemed like miles. They could hear their words reflecting back to them for twenty second after speaking.

Svara and Echo spent nearly a month together in the crypts. The would sing and play games. Svara began to discover that she had new powers developing. She could control the plants growing around them. Sometimes she could hear the conversations of rats while she slept. Echo helped Svara train her druidic magic. Svara's horns and tail grew larger as she aged. At first she was ashamed of them, but as she became more accustomed to them she saw how useful these new adaptations could be. She always wondered why they had began to grow. After a time Svara felt the need to go back into the world. She couldn’t return home, so she became an outsider to the exterior cities. Doing whatever odd job she could to get by and honing her skills at fighting and controlling her magic. She was hot tempered and, at times, would be compelled with a hate filled rage. She didn’t know where this came from, but it had never happened before being taken from her home all those years ago. Now Svara is becoming to determined to uncover just what happened when her mother took her to the black flats. She left there with her body changed with demonic features, new magical abilities, and a dark rage deep inside her-- something terrible must have occurred and it was time she knew.
>>

How's the exploding dice houserule work? The only system I've ever played with exploding dice is Savage Worlds, but I've wanted to integrate them into other games.
>>
How do you handle it when PCs need to lie to other PCs?
Do you call for Bluff vs. Sense Motive? Do you let them roleplay it out? Or do you allow one of them to call for the roll first?
>>
>>53192761
>>53192772
>>53192783
are you asking us to rate their character or something?
>>
>>53192836
Yes.
>>
>>53192761
I'd ask them who the character is, beyond just a collection of events.
>>
>>53192761
>>53192772
>>53192783
Eh. A few warning signs but nothing too huge.
I'd demand some "whatif"s be answered to make sure this wasn't shitbait, but as long as they weren't trying to wrangle the pixie as a second PC it'd work well enough.

>>53192828
I tell them to roleplay it out. If they don't, whoever breaks roleplay first is assumed to have lost the opposed skill check.
>>
>>53192839
What's the premise of the campaign? The character is a 6/10 but it could be better or worse depending on how well it meshes into the setting and campaign pitch. Tell the player to elaborate on her personality since Svara's personality is almost completely unknown.
>>
>>53192851
Oh, no. The pixie is a familiar that she demanded for free at 1st level because it's "crucial to her story".

It's worth noting that she also mentioned her character is "at least half demon" and despite all the fluff about druid magic in the story, the sheet she filled out is for a rogue.
>>
>>53192908
Mention that shit, retard. It's just a tad bit important.

She might (haha, fat chance) be planning to multiclass into druid. More likely, it's a "BUT MY BACKSTORY SAYS I DRUID POWERS" gambit.

Either way, the pixie is an instant no unless somebody else at the table is going to play it.

Usually. My personally favorite is cleric because I just adore having the full list known right out of the gate. It helps me get all sorts of fun wands and scrolls to help my friends with all of our problems and obstacles we face!
Very satisfying role to play, imo. You can bash people with your deity's favored weapon, cast all kinds of fun spells, cast even more spells with items, and even do channel stuff, which can be super interesting with Variant Channeling and some feats.

I strongly recommend it for a straightforward yet useful class. The fact that you inherently tie into an important setting element is just awesome gravy!

So my character is part of the Wayward Path so he keeps a travel log, as is part of the whole martial tradition, is this too hammy for his application start?

"My great grandfather left Korvosa with a dream in his heart and a pocket full of coin. My grandfather helped build Magnimar, the greatest city in all of Varisia. My father saw our family's dreams burn and line humiliated. I now wish to see it restored. Adrian Love fights for a free Magnimar, unshackled from despots and oppressors even if the city must burn for it. I swear that all accounts held within this journal contain no falsehoods nor exaggerations. I am closer to my dream than ever before and I am a very long way from home."

The idea is my character fled Mangimar immediately after a successful murder of a chief member of the Council of Ushers, using his position as a relatively respected doctor to make his way in to the sick man's home and ensure he died from an otherwise survivable disease. He jumped shipped as far away as possible, which happened to be heading to the Mwangi. He signed on as the expedition's doctor and one of his primary motivations is survival at any cost.

The kind that is all about learning and solving problems and all that, but not averse to using nature's magic.

I mean, you look at Merlin and also Gandalf and stuff, you can argue they sure have that druidic look to them when we usually know them as wizards

So I always hyper optimize characters then hold back until it's time to kick things up a notch. Am I a bad player for doing this? I normally don't go full power unless things are going south fast (another PC has already died).
>>
I don't see Serpent Skull in the looking for game listing in Roll20.

>>53193898

>>
>>53194495
This is normal and sometimes can be considered good RPing or player behavior really

If you are playing a Wizard/Cleric or something, it may be necessary if only to stop stealing the spotlight

And if your character is one of those who are more secretive or modest types, then it counts a good RPing

....Really, I wish I could be like you, my friend who likes to GM remarks how I am the type who makes super optimized characters but always ends up holding back not because I want to, but because I am bad at running the builds

I don't even see how "super optimized" is even that different from just being a barbarian and having power attack. Even the dumbest normie looks up guides these days.

Most of the time when I hear about people doing "crazy" optimization they're just cheating.
>>
>>53194544
Exactly

>>53194547
See, often times I make build/race/template combinations that make them REALLY potentially super powerful than standard

My past builds include like a Half-Dragon Paladin/Cleric of Bahamut who not only hits EXTREMELY hard but had full cleric spellcasting on top of that

But my party would always make fun of how I make tons of bad decisions in general so I end up holding myself back

Its not a flattering matter when you are genuinely compared to KonoSuba's Aqua because you tend to make really powerful builds but not the actual competence to unlock its full potential

P.S This is gestalt if anything
>>
So what's the verdict on the TSS apps?
>>
>>53194612
We can't give one until you finish yours
>>
>>53194526
>If you are playing a Wizard/Cleric or something, it may be necessary if only to stop stealing the spotlight
Primal Disciple Barbarian || Symbiotic Slayer Vigilante

So the "kick it up a notch" moment was:
>symbiotic release to give power over to the symbiote personal
>symbiotic empowerment
>begin rage w/ Moment of Greatness
>activate four magic tattoos with Deadly Juggernaut, Greater Heroism, Battle Trance, and Divine Vessel (Anarchic Avatar)
>downed three doses of Blood Sap

This was when my GM had put in the 'you lose' scenario at high levels (level 13) after we had apparently fucked up (I'll admit we made some mistakes).
>>
>>53194592

If you have gestalt and templates on the table then I think it's safe to say no one cares about any semblance of balance.
>>
>>53194632
At any rate, theres no shame in holding back if you and everyone else are having fun still

It can tie in to why exactly your character acts that way. It can also make for some fun combat scenes!

>>53194635
These days, I do try to hold back by not going too crazy with choices

..Yet, as of recently, I ended up with an L5 character who was confirmed as one of the strongest duelists among the other PCs when I made the build mainly for fun. So, I guess its just a bad habit of mine

>>
>>53195599
You're supposed to be foreigners, keep that in mind.

Though the thing is most don't seem to know what they do for the expedition itself. You need a job and a purpose being there.

Guide, navigator, doctor, missionary, guards, botanist, archaeologist, etc. You need a reason they agreed to take you along.
>>
>>53195494
Oh sorry i misunderstood you. I thought you where implying that i should care more about the character itself and not about the stats.

He's LN and has the War domain (obv since Arsenal Chaplain). He doesn't follow a particular god as much as he worships war itself. That is not meaning he is a warmonger or actively promotes war. He just accepts war as a fact and let's others debate over things being good or evil.
We are playing a Heaven/Hell setting campaign (I know, kinda edgy but I really like the group) and my character is going to be a Nefalem who lived on the earth. Not fitting in anywhere he found his joy to be the fight.

> What are they like
Straight foward and not to talkactive,

> What do they value in friends?
Honesty and knowing that they have his back since he tends to throw himself into combat with everything he has and tends to need people watching his back. Also cooking.

Short term goals:
Find an enemy who can defeat him (I'd imagine being a Nefalem on earth with puny humans doesn't isn't really challenging)

Long term goals:
Find purpose and a place in life and ultimately die in glorious combat

Bonus Round: Has an irrational fear of not dying in combat

>No haterino please
>>
>>53195631
The city is the colony right on the edge of the jungle. The player's guide says that people should have a reason to want to go into the jungle in the first place. Be it for treasure, exploration, because you want to run from the military or whatever.

>>53195632
Exactly what I mean. For example, the first app, Lord Cornelius had a good idea going. Then Gray the fencer had both a good reason to be there, and a reasonable purpose. Others like the witchdoctor kobold or catboy have a good reason as being guides.

The DM doesn't want us to know that much about each others characters before we meet in game. (Campaign hasn't startet yet)
It seems that the idea was to have one PC from every side:
Heaven: Female Buff/Battlefield Control Sorcerer who doesn't want to harm anyone but still has to fight
Earth: Me
Hell: ? Neutral Tiefling Alchemist. Sarcastic and insecure.

>>53195733
I see what you mean.
Any ideas what would fit for a character like that? Maybe his true passion is painting but he has no talent as his fear of failure keeps him from getting in to it.
>>
>>53195913
I should mention that although we are from different realms we fill (obviously) work together for a common goal and the sorcerer is good and the alchemist and me are neutral. I don't know yet what our common goal will be but it will be good aligned.
>>
>>53195890
The Murder Guy is USUALLY a legit role, especially in classic serials. The Muscle trope exists for a reason

The thing you're running against is that in DND, everyone is The Murder Guy to an extend except for maybe a dedicated buffer..who is there to help the murder squad kill things.

You're gonna wanna stress those survival skills, instead. Everyone can murder in pathfinder, you're not really special even if you do murder faster or harder.
>>
>>53195733
>hard motherfucker that kills people and bosses folks around
Given that PoW is allowed and its gestalt, you'll soon find yourself surrounded by other murder guys who may not be as good at murder at you but will quickly chafe from being around you.

Soon enough the other (admittedly less murdery) guys will ask each other "why are we putting up with this faggot?" and it may not happen anytime soon, but at some point you'll take one too many crits or fail one too many saves and the guys that you've been pushing around will watch you die before cleaning up after you.

At 5'6 F will weigh about 310 pounds. E probably weighs in at 180 at 6' (thighs, you see). C is probably 5'9 and nearing 200, much to her annoyance. B is close to F, because her hight evens out her fatty tissue ratio. A weighs close to 210, being only a little shorter than C and having more muscle. J is probably close to 280, possibly more because she is very tall and K only a little less. G weighs slightly less than J because muscle>fat. H is a delicate little thing at 5' 4 and weights close to 140.

>>
>>53196288
This. And the disparity can quickly build bitterness as well.

If one person kills shit better than the others, the worst case scenario is that there's someone else in the party who's shit at optimization and was trying to do the same thing. That person ended up with an even less versatile character than yours, who can't kill shit as well either. Someone's gonna not have fun.

If you kill shit slightly better than the others but use this to boss them around when they ARE more versatile than you, their goodwill will rapidly evaporate as well; who does this asshole think he is, and are we even getting anything out of keeping him with us? We can fight plenty well, isn't he just a fucking liability?

Then you add an extra layer of complexity with the downtime career types; heavily focused crafters, the less wily of those that make diviners, and so on: These guys are giving you massive boons, but at the same time why aren't they staying home? Why do they insist (IC not OOC) on tagging along? Or worse yet what happens if one of them manages to be competent at crafting, *and* at combat, *and* at something like part of the 'skillmonkey' job as well? Worst case scenario he did this with as less time and mental effort than the guy who can't kill shit as good as your beatstick and isn't as versatile either. That's not gonna end well.

Finding a proper balance in a group without group creation can be very difficult.
>>
>>53197276
I'd argue they're not all minority aggressors.

Chicago cops, for example, spent much of the decade particularly focused on arresting tourist vehicles and nonsentient physical objects after gaining the right to simply declare objects guilty and do quite literally anything they want with it afterwards.

That's how we got precincts with Marguerita machines and half the force owning RVs (you like one you see just accuse it of suspicion of being related to drug trafficking and take it home with you).

Meanwhile ones in LA and SF probably don't notice skin color or tempting luxuries nearly as much as they care about their drug sales.

Is likely also a valid reaction.

I want to tell a story where the repeated destruction in the Reformation of the adventurers build them into eventually the idealized hero. Are there any good mechanical methods of destroying or removing away equipment from the party without making it feel cheap?
>>
>>53197668
A villain more interested in humiliating them rather than killing them repeatedly winning?
>>
I know Broken Blade's the top beatstick in PoW, so what is Primal Fury's purpose?
>>
>>53197830
Broken Blade is supposed to be the unarmed discipline. Primal Fury is the general purpose "smash shit" discipline.
>>
>>53197830
That's only because of a bug in Broken Blade's wording which makes it possible to use the unarmed discipline with weapons.

Yeah, it's a stupid bug.
>>
>>53197926
>bug
It is explicitly written to allow you to do that. That's no bug at all.
>>

Monk weapons and natural weapons.

And it's not broken with these

It's only broken when you swap in the ability to use ANY weapon with it, and suddenly you're using the unarmed discipline with a fucking greataxe
>>
>>53198077
Which disciplines would you say are broken, and in what order?
>>

Even in the Monk weapons list you've got the Sansetsukon, the Tri-Point Double-Edged Sword, and others.

Honestly they should have just done what paizo did to pummeling style. Add a clause that keeps people from using say, crusaders flurry with it.

Good morning, Pathfinder General.

I hope you aren't running any games tonight or this weekend; not only is it Mother's Day, but there's all sorts of exciting movies to watch in theaters tonight!

Thanks for the reminder, asshole. At least Friday is safe.

The Sansetsukon is 1d10 19-20/x2. Is it as strong as the Greataxe or Greatsword? No, but it still goes up into ridiculousness with Broken Blade.

Group wasn't from /pfg/, and when I needed replacements I just picked the first two from the Discord that expressed interest after I linked them the campaign setting.
>>
Help me build a punch person /pfg/. I'm playing a tiefling and I want to go punch shit up. I'm thinking of either

>steelfist commando
>dervish defender
>silver fist monk

Which one should i go and what are some essential feats for a punch build.
>>

IUS, the pummeling style chain, Horn of the Criosphinx, Greater Unarmed Strike.

Sounds like an interesting premise.

I'd play.

Here is the order I took the feats in. A lot of this can be changed if you drop the shield stuff.

I used the cutlass because 1handed, so you can grapple while attacking with it and so you can 2-hand it, and for the crit.

>>53195410
this comment chain might also interest you.

>>53198500
Unchained monk. Dragon and/or pummeling style, elbow smash, flying kick, style mastery. Aim for dimensional dervish dragon full attack bullshit.

It is crazy effective. Broken blade should have never been published.
>>
>>53198077
>And it's not broken with these
It's broken even if you only use unaugment unarmed attacks.
>>
>>53198690
BP, which combat styles are worth taking and which ones should be universally ignored?
>>
>>53198077
>And it's not broken with these
fucking wut?

Steel Flurry Strike is an abomination, and whoever read
>Make three attacks on a target enemy, inflicting up to +3d6 points of damage on each strike.
and though that
>yea this is fine
has chromosome problems.

>>53198785
I really have no fucking idea. I get a hard-on for pounce so pummeling style is my kind of thing. Dragon style is nice for the extra damage. I'm sure there are others that could work well, I just don't know much about them.
>>
>>53198690
>Style Mastery
>With Dragon and Pummeling

Imma need a spoon here, because the feat I'm finding wouldn't work with these two.
>>
>>53198829

>Benefit: You can switch your style as a free action. At the start of combat, pick one of your styles. You start the combat in that style, even in the surprise round.

>Normal: It takes a swift action to begin or switch your styles.

This way you can start the fight with a pouncing full attack, an not spend your swift action on turning your style on when you can use it for KI stuff.

>>53198892
Not too impressed to be honest. It's setting up the full attack without eating one in return that can be the hard part. If set up well that damage can go to crazytown, but it still seems like it would be better spent on making things work even when you don't set up things well.
>>
>>53198968
Oh, so Combat Style Master, NOT actually "Style Mastery", which is a completely different thing.
>>
>>53198985

>>53199030
I'm not normally one for the "le autism maymay", but you might want to get yourself checked.

The joke was literally "the problem with this game is that I'm bad at it". If you didn't realize it was a joke, bad or not, it's really telling.

If I talk to them and they talk to me than I might realize that they are an actual person with problems and issues, and not the sacred solution to all of my problems that I've made them to be in my mind.
>>
>>53198654
Its not really a premise, just an archtypical story which is unusual to tell in pathfinder because adventurers dont transform, they only grow.
>>
>>53197668
Rust monsters
Those elephant nosed cocobo things that eat magic
Steel Breaker Brawlers
Psions spamming sonic attacks

Not fit in what way?

I feel like they can be broken into 4 categories.

>1. technical and practical fit
Ex; Cornelius

>2. technical fit, but not practical fit
Ex; Karam. He's an adventurer you could shoehorn into literally any adventure. But he really doesnt add anything of his own to this particular story.

>3. not technical fit, but practical fit
Ex: Priscilla. She does not belong on this adventure from a logical standpoint. However, this is part of the point, she offers a fish-out-of-water dynamic to the story and has her own internally justified reasons for being here. And is still mechanically useful to the party despite not having any tomb-raiding skills.

>4. Neither technical nor practical fit.
Ex; The tengu, who has mostly the expertise of a nautical adventure which this is not, and has a personal story that would push him away from rather than into the campaign

1 and 3 are good. 2 is acceptable. 4 needs work.
>>
>>53199320
So the question is, where do all the apps fit into these categories?
>>
>>53195613
This... This actually fits fairly well with what Serpent's Skull is, especially when you realize Serpentfolk and Serpents in general were often fertility figures.
>>
>>53199425

I can't be bothered to actually go through each and every one and snugly categorize them, but going off what I know about the Serpent's Skull AP I'd say Cornelius, the Good Doctor, Aurelian, Malu and Sapera have backstories and motivations that will remain relevant well into Book 3.

I hate to say this, in a pfg thread of all places, but some of the more "anime" apps are so out of place that it hurts.

Maids, girls in frilly dresses, some chick in a kimono. Just thinking about them walking around in jungles and swamps already kills my immersion amd I'm not even applying for that game.
>>
I am trying to decide what my character's general purpose is on the expedition for trouser snake. Originally I was going to be a doctor, but there is already a doctor. Now instead I am looking at possibly going for s linguist or botanist.
