At the risk of sounding like I'm supporting Aurelian, and at the risk of posting spoilers for Book 2 (be warned), you get into Eleder only to find a five-way faction brawl over who gets to venture into the Expanse and uncover a fabulously ancient Azlanti city first, and one of the factions are the Aspis Consortium (who are deeply hated in Sargava and in fact quite illegal) whom the party can help or hinder.

They're also the rivals of the Pathfinder Society, if that helps.

Amalthea: Medium/Oracle (Haunted/Ancestors), Fated to be the Goddess of Rebirth and Fertility. Great versatility and can fit a lot of roles.

The success of a cavalier depends somewhat on the terrain you fight in.
Mounted combat is extremely powerful, giving you great mobility without sacrificing offense, especially when you use the classic Spirited Charge feat. If you coordinate with your team you can also pick out helpful teamwork feats and grant them to your teammates for great synergy.
The only real problem is sometimes you'll be in tight spaces, but just remember that your mount can squeeze through any space you yourself can normally go through. Some people address this by play small-sized cavaliers so they can ride dogs or ponies, but all you really need to the Narrow Frame feat on your horse and Hosteling armor for when you go up stairs/up ladders/in someone's house etc.
A lot of people say the cavalier is a tier 5, but I firmly believe it's a tier 4 class, having great offense and mobility, helpful support abilities, and a great set of options for more specialized abilities with their orders.

There's the Augur of Battle feat from the Divination handbook for Spheres. If you're last in initiative, you use Int to hit. And you can just delay until you're last in initiative.

Entertainingly, this means only one person can ever be benefiting from it at once, since only one person can be 'last'. If you have a 1v1 between two people using it, they'd just stand there, eying the other up, waiting for the opponent to make a move so they can go AFTER them and use int to hit.

Can't you just... do it? I don't think you need a way to do it. As long as you're proficient with the weapon you're picking up you should be fine. If you're not proficient you'll take a penalty to your attack rolls, but I'm pretty sure there are some traits/feats/class features or something out there that make it so you don't take the penalty with certain improvised weapons.

As for katanas, I don't know what to tell you. You could play a tengu and get the proficiency for free, or you could talk to your DM and see what he has to say about it. As a DM I'd be fine with considering you proficient as long as you made a convincing enough argument.

How about this: and that's something I take straight from actual weapon fighting and fencing. Both hearsay and personal experience.

If you're good with a sword, you'll also do okay with an axe. You know how it handles, you also fought people with axes, and you just need to get to it. However physical form and complementary skills such as skirmishing (which is a real skill) are things you need to learn specifically.

If you're a wandering adventurer who's had fights, I'd say even if you're more of a punching specialist, you should be able to do well with swords.

In fact wrestling and fistfighting is one of the first thing knights learned I have absolutely no clue why PF says you aren't even proficient with hand-to-hand if you're playing a Fighter.

Anyway, Titanic Armor would probably help, if you don't mind hefty ACP. The Stamina Trick for Agile Maneuvers lets you treat yourself as bigger for CMB checks. There's probably some other magic items to help out.

You want Charisma if you're one of the casting archetypes; otherwise, you can safely leave it at a 10 or 12. You never want to DUMP Charisma though, unless you're given access to Legendary Vigilantes and Legendary Villains: Vigilantes. Those 3rd-party books have feats (which can replace your 1st-level Social Talent) that let you swap off of CHA for class features and casting onto INT or WIS; in those cases, you can safely dump CHA into the ocean.
