Mini cyoa. Choose wisely!

Pick one and what they are. You can become one of them, be the big sis/brother of one of them, and/or have a pure relationship with one of them.

Third from the left, and a tomboy little girl. I become said little girl, and have amazing adventures with my three friends. It's only when we reach high school do my three friends realise that Yes, I am indeed a girl.
Cue romantic/comedy drama. there will be close calls, fallouts and many mistakes, but in the end we will work it out and stay best friends.

The only thing better would be to be the girl with a harem of monsterboys. Bonus points if they turn all human men into slaves.

It's been a longtime fetish of mine. I'd summon monsters/werewolves/etc. to Earth, have them dominate all human men, and become their Queen. They'd all be beautiful and perfect and humans couldn't compare. Maybe I should make it into a cyoa?

>Power of the Contract
Starts weak and while it might not be as powerful as the other three in their specifics tasks, you can probably imitate them pretty well.

>Filters
At the beginning, I'm going to be spending lots of time approaching people and offering them a great deal, less people thinking that I'm some new kind of street preacher, better.

>Health
Not getting sick is pretty huge. And being able to heal others gives me something to trade that people really want.

>Paths
Will eventually make negotiating a lot easier since I can just foresee how they will react to offers.

I thought about taking Tongues to help me make deals in other languages but then I figured that I can probably trade for someone's language skills after a while.

At this point I'm little worried about my safety. Other than foreseeing that I'm going to get mugged, my only defense against someone trying to bash my head in is trying to convince them to sign a contract.

Stone would seem like good deal then but I think any of the companions would trivially handle any moron on street. Door on other hand is great if someone I made a deal with isn't happy about it anymore.

>Door
Plus I can use it to travel around the world without having to bother with planes.

>Dragon
Friendo and maybe I can eventually meet her parents if I manage to get something worth trading to a dragon.

It's unsurprising how often those having such a hardboner against muh /r9k/ are exactly like them except they are or at least imagine that they are the "alphas".
You don't get it, robots are despisable because of how annoying they are, you are not better by being some reverse-robot obsessed by betas and feeling the right to be an annoying piece of shit because of how alpha you are.
There are a lot of people like you here than acual robots, do you even realize that?

I've got the first page of my Not!Ace Combat cyoa done. Before I go any deeper I want to know what people would prefer, a plane building aspect or simply picking prefab? If I do building I might include a prefab for people not interested in doing all the work to build something, but if I do ship-building everyone will get 1 plane, while if I did full pre-fab you'd have a money system instead that would allow you to buy multiple.

I for one like your concept, it has a lot of potential for meaningful variety and interesting stories to be told if well developed.

I'm well aware, but honestly, I don't have the patience for image searching, and neither the skill nor the desire to learn image editing. I doubt I'll finish it anyway, but I want to at least stop giving up the second I have trouble describing anything. I've seriously lost the ability to put up with having even the smallest difficulty in writing fiction, and I need to get over it if I'm ever gonna be able to live with myself.

Thanks for responding though! Needed to get out of my own head a little bit, so venting here helped, but that's really not what this thread is for, so I'll post a cyoa and shut up.

>>53132381
Huh, well that would be pretty dang awesome if it happened, but I won't get my hopes up. Honestly it's gonna be a cliche storm, what with my obsession with Dragon Quest. Gonna be more about what role you want to play in the party they'll eventually form, and maybe some say in where they go and what they do, what happens after the Demon Lord is slain, etc etc.

The idea is still kind of building itself as I go for now.

If you really want to know anon, I didn't google that question and just click the first result.

I looked an appendix of modern high explosives from a chemistry textbook and picked the one that was the easiest to manufacture with the most abundant components that would be available in a fantasy setting in the shortest amount of time as well as the explosive primer.

If you actually tried to google that question and looked up the instructions of making bombs out of urine, all you'll get is the standard method of making rudimentary gunpowder (either some variation of the French or Swiss method) which will take you more then a year to produce from scratch.

I wouldn't call using cast quantities of explosives against anime characters, collected from their excrement "dumb proof". I would say you'd have to be equal parts smart to come up with it and dedicated to produce it, but dumb to think it's actually a good idea in the context of this world.

When you copy images it looks nicer when you use the feather tool or whatever it's called in Photoshop so they look more dynamic. Using some kind of frame would look cool too.

The text is kinda flat, but drop shadow or using the text path to outline in a different color would make it more vivid I think.

Once upon a time, an archaeologist found an old oil lamp, still somehow pristine after all of these years. He opened it, and was possessed by the spirit bound inside. Once I've made it to a well-defended metropolis, I'll summon my entire army - in the form of a walking castle carved from the Behemoth.

Dynamos can carve up faraway buildings and enemies, Living Beacons summon hordes while being well-protected, the Lost Titan devastates anything too durable for the others, and the Outsider Medics add even more staying power.

I wouldn't mind asking Ozoi to take away my ability to hate her as long as I can still rationally think about things regarding our relationship. If all she does is remove the emotional response that elicits hate but I'm still able to understand negative stimuli and positive stimuli I'll just ask her to stop doing whatever it is that I consider negative stimuli.

It's not on the same tier as mind death or identity loss, you're just losing one of many billions of potential emotional facets, in this case a faculty you shouldn't want in the first place.

While I'm at it I'd probably ask her to change my idea of an ideal woman to perfectly encapsulate her default looks as far as the physical response goes. Maybe ask her to remove my anxiety but probably not.

And then just don't be a dick to her and you'll be perfectly happy forever.

The problem with Devourer is that she'll probably end up eating people that you kind of care about. Sure, it's easy enough to say "don't eat my friends and family" and then point out who that is. But then friends of friends start being eaten, and next thing you know your friends and family lose all their friends that you didn't know about and become all depressed.

It really depends on information we haven't recieved that would make or break a relationship with devourer.

1. How often does she need to feed?
2. How understanding is she of your desire to live without having to attend funerals

In my opinion if she eats more than once a month that's a deal breaker. I can't deal with having that many bodies on my hand. Ideally I'd like it if she only needed to eat once a year or so. If it were a once a day deal that's really difficult to get around if you don't live in a large city.

As for the second point you can ask her to drive over to another town when she needs to eat and give her a guideline of the kind of person she can feed on without causing problems for you. Tell her to look for rapists/murderers/homeless people/the scum of society to avoid raising suspicion.

Adaptations (4)
Possession - Long Con (Plant seeds in random survivors, create unwilling sleeper agents. Repeat if this creates openings in their defense.)
Technomancy - Hack (Access secure enemy data in cleared bases, bypass other high-tech defenses.)
Training - Proxy (Going to need smarter troops. Lieutenants with their psychic links should make excellent trainers.)
Vitality - Undying (Shouldn't expect everything to go entirely according to plan.)

Units (5)
Valkyrie (Light assault forces, transport, and kidnappers/corpse thieves.)
Devourer (Having the floor eat people is an excellent defense, for my own base and bases I don't want the enemy to retake.)
Stalker
Infiltrator (Taking memories from corpses will be useful.)
Lieutenant (Psionic command and reporting infiltrator-gathered intel in real time.)

The plan -
Operate from hidden outposts. Find the guilty ad feed them to a devourer or give them as a present to another Caller.
Also disrupt any command infrastructure I encounter while I'm at it.

However, if you tried sincerely and did your best with the information you had on hand then it's not your cross to bear. Let it go. Nobody in this life has control over everything that happens to them. Everyone needs to come to terms with the violability of their well being and decide for themselves if they can handle it.

Science Team has only an approximate idea of the situation here. They're doing their best, but they can only do so much.

I always thought this was a pretty evocative one. You've got a good scene going here: you wake up in a bizarre landscape of deserted buildings, and discover that forty-foot-tall roam the streets. Your only hope of escape is a radio, inexplicably receiving signals from a scientific group on Earth. With their guidance, you must traverse the crumbling ground, evade the towering horrors, brave the unpredictable and inexplicable "anomalies" scattered across the land, and persist despite maddening echoes from the past. Yet, as you near your destination, you learn that your circumstances are far more dire than you had imagined...

A blame cyoa where you don't have a ridiculously overpowered weapon like killy is basically an island cyoa. The cyborgs are straight better than you in every possible way and probably want to kill you, the world itself is somewhat antithetical to life, since it sees you as pests rather than people. The question becomes how long until you succumb, and that's not really a compelling cyoa for me.
>>
>>53135636
It's old, I remember the anon making it in thread, and that was a long time ago.
>>
>>53135649
It's not like killy is any hot shit, he lives because his plot armor is stronger than anyone else's. His GBE gets hard countered very early on and fails to fire whenever the plot demands it, there are plenty of creatures more powerful or fearsome than him who die because they're just shit out luck when they appear in the manga.

In any case if I made the CYOA the entire point would be to create yourself as a character who is powerful in a specific way but not necessarily almighty.

I suspect that /tg/ just takes the premises of those CYOAs more seriously, whereas /b/ thinks "Sure, I may be an out-of-shape guy with asthma and no combat experience, but I can totally beat that dragon!"

>>53135769
It's a little more plausible in this one, because you're only required to kill something if you take "The duel", you only have to stick around if you take "hold tight" (and that's only for a few days), and the enemies are not trying to kill you specifically (unlike an island survival nemesis). It's just about right for "fantastic yet possibly survivable adventure." However, it's not that varied and there are a number of combinations which aren't that interesting.

>>53135868
Why do you need a resolution mechanic to gauge how perilous a situation is? A scenario in which you lounge on a tropical island is less perilous than one in which you swim through waters filled with hungry sea monsters. You don't need dice to determine that. Yes, it's possible to say "I BEAT UP ALL THE SEA MONSTERS!!!", but that is stupid.
>>
>>53136151
>pick your favorite
>get a waifu
>getting a waifu puts you on a magical journey that ends with half the world fighting and the gods directly intervening into your fate
>if you chose a different favorite you'd have a completely different adventure with different boons

Sounds like a CYOA to me.

>Yes, it's possible to say "I BEAT UP ALL THE SEA MONSTERS!!!", but that is stupid.
Is not
To which you reply
>is to!

etc.

Is the reason you need a resolution mechanic. Note this does not mean dice, it means some way to gauge how effective a particular build would be for comparison.
>>
>>53136281
I mean at a certain level I get what you mean, but that's only if you're comparing to other builds.
Some of the most fun I've had with CYOAs is just using my imagination to think up cool scenarios in Space Opera Refuge, making up cool ideas like I was both the GM and players. Imagining "And I had all the money ever and 1000 waifus" was possible, but that wouldn't be fun. What's more fun is to pretend how I'd do a bank heist in a space station with my cool companions.
>>
>>53136331

Sure, but it's a bit less fun, at least in my opinion, when the odds are so low. I like to imagine doing somewhat possible tasks relative to the power I've been given, because that's a lot more dynamic in my mind, not to mention those island CYOAs didn't really give to much to work with besides a few very minor and basic choices.

I agree, and that's part of why I think there's a lot of life left in the island-survival-style CYOAs. They could use a lot of elaboration and fine-tuning. The ones that have been made so far are mostly pretty rough. You could improve on them.

If you really enjoy "I beat up all the super monsters the end" that completely fine, I'm just saying I, and I get the feeling quite a few other anons like CYOAs to have a relative internal difficulty, which the original disagreement was if CYOA's had "difficulties", and that's all I'm trying to say. I'm not saying you're having badwrongfun if you like certain things, I'm just saying there are "difficulty levels" even if they aren't discrete real measurements.

>>
>>53136532
How "difficult" the setting is matters, even in imagination, at least to a lot of people. That's a metric a lot of people use. Even in imagination we use our common sense to gauge how hard something would be. If you tend not to take that into account that's fair, but that doesn't mean it's not a real thing.

No, even states where malpractice suits have been heavily limited by state law, healthcare is still extremely expensive. Malpractice suits are a red herring, it's not a significant issue in most of the country. Tort reform happened decades ago, and prices still continued to rise.

Prices are high because there is nothing to keep them down, so they rise as high as the market will bear, which is pretty damn high. In healthcare, demand is virtually guaranteed and bargaining power is extremely unbalanced. That puts a massive upward pressure on price. Most of the rest of the world has something to try to keep price down, ranging from price controls in some places to a public healthcare system in others. The US doesn't, so prices end up stupidly high.
>>
>>53136579

Not really. Let's use a more real world example. It would be more fun for me to imagine robbing a high security bank than it would be stealing a apple from the store, and it would probably be more than imaging life as an African child soldier with practically no agency to do anything. In games of imagination its nice to try to think around challenges, but if those challenges are too high or they give you too little wiggle room it often becomes less fun. This isn't even some crazy novel concept, it's just how our brains tend to keep sharp.

Without a resolution mechanic in the cyoa, there is no way to tell how well you're actually doing. You're arbitrarily assigning both the rules and the scoring mechanic to something that doesn't have any by default. That's not difficulty, that's masturbation.
>>
>>53136748
It's kinda a matter of common sense relative to the setting. I don't need discrete mechanics to make judgement calls on how difficult certain tasks would be. It's just structured imagination, that's all it is.
>>
>>53136748
You don't need a resolution mechanic to know that a puppy will lose a fight against a dragon, the only bearing resolution mechanics has on difficulty is the meta difficulty of figuring out how the resolution mechanics work.

About the win condition. Which people will not share, and thus is totally arbitrary based on what you want to get out of it. You can't meaningfully compare difficulty when the rules, the goal, and the scoring are made by each person. So saying something a cyoa is difficult is meaningless, since difficult is a relative term.

Aren't all CYOAs self insert?
>>
>>53136886
It's difficult relative to a person's perception, which is still a measurement. And there is also the average perception of difficulty. For instance the average person would say robbing a fast food restaurant as a super solder would be easier than fighting off a immortal stalker as a normal human. So the internal judgement for most people would be robbing the store is easier, and the external average judgement would be the same. These are just not discrete or hard laws.

But nevertheless you could say the same thing about the real world. For some its easier to do calculus than it is to more an arm, but because not everyone is a paraplegic we say calculus is harder because that's the average perception, even if we accept that other people have a different internal perception.

Uh, I believe you've misconstrued my position.

Anons were complaining about the prevalence of waifu CYOAs. I brought up island CYOAs as an example of a non-waifu CYOA subgenre with rich potential. What I asserted, or meant to assert, was that island CYOAs lend themselves well to the construction of interesting stories, but that the ones that have been constructed thus far are generally implausibly difficult; ergo, there's a lot of room for improvement in island CYOAs, and anons who are bored with waifus might try making some. (I never really laid all of this out because I wasn't trying to make an explicit argument, exactly.) My contention regarding difficulty thus complements my contention regarding narrative; the two are not opposed.

>>53137321
This is really, really stupid. Your argument boils down to "We can't know whether a puppy can defeat a dragon, because no method for answering this question has been supplied by the CYOA." In a general sense, you don't need a mechanic like that; if you run into somebody so obtuse that they insist that puppies can easily defeat dragons, or someone who claims they can BEAT ALL THE SEA MONSTERS!!!, you ignore that person, because they have no goddamn sense.

We can explore this further by shifting the question slightly. The argument that a dispute resolution mechanic is unnecessary rests on the presumption of a shared "common sense" understanding of the likely outcomes of particular situations; we can all agree that puppies will not defeat dragons. The argument in favor of a dispute resolution mechanic suggests that the outcome of a puppy-vs-dragon contest is unknowable unless it is determined by some specific prearranged process. But we can always shift the ambiguity in the situation one step back: what if the players in question have no consensus regarding the basic nature of puppies, i.e., no "common sense" understanding of what a puppy is? Is it necessary to supply a puppy definition mechanic?

>Difficulty of setting implies a win condition
No it doesn't. It just means how difficult things in the setting are. You don't need a "win" condition. You don't need mechanics. You just need basic judgement to make common sense calls on difficulty.
But there are win conditions. In a CYOA about being a bounty hunter the win condition is to make a character that would make a workable bounty hunter that common sense dictates would do well. In a island survival one it's about surviving as dictated by common sense. Common sense would say making a bounty hunter that could survive in say Star Dust is easier than say living in those old survival island CYOAs. So one is "harder"

There's a shared presumption that it's more likely for the dragon to kill the puppy than the other way around. In an analogous fashion, a CYOA in which you are assigned the role of a puppy fighting a dragon can be said to be harder than a CYOA in which you are assigned the role of a dragon fighting a puppy.

Again, I was talking about how difficult the setting is internally, as in to be in that place. Which was my original point. Which I made very clear.

Again, 'internal' difficulty is a meaningless value which is arbitrary per person unless you have an actual resolution mechanic.

If you think its meaningless fine, most others don't. No one is telling you not to enjoy what you enjoy. It's just most people use it as a metric. If you don't, then don'r.

So what are the resolution mechanics for writing a story? Because it can't be easier to write a story for one CYOA then another if there aren't any resolution mechanics, and I've never seen any.

>That sounds stupid, and broken as hell.
It absolutely is. You get maybe five CYOAs where the premise is remotely interesting, then maybe fifteen more where you're still a walking God but maybe can find a challenge, and then it's just masturbating to how you solve every problem in every fictional setting by twitching your nose, or condemn your least favorite characters to unending suffering because that's how you roll.
