To whoever thinks the best course of action is killing her own sisters to better negotiate with humanity: you're a moron and you're going to die.

I can barely fathom someone that stupid existing. Really, like an enemy general killing the military chain of command in his own army, then waltzing to his opponent's base expecting tea and biscuits.

Your idea is bad and you should feel bad.
Goodnight.

An insubordinate chain of command that refuses to do anything but kill humans to punish them for the actions of leaders they aren't even aware of. Going so far as to slaughter those sisters, made with the same methods, who fight for the sake of the humans. They are rabid dogs.
>>
>>53122982
>protecting and defending the very same people who body raped you and your sistsers, stole years of your life, and brutally killed everyone you love

Is this cuckoldry?
>>
>>53123011
Those people will die. The rest of the species is not guilty of it. Our Defender sisters are not guilty of it. Why should they die in numbers any greater than what they must in order that we may defend ourselves long enough to spread the truth and to see the puppet masters fall?
>>
>>53123011

>>53123041
Yeah but I mean, I may be a Nightmare Caller but I still wanna live! I don't need create murder and destruction, but because of what I've become and what I know, people are gonna be trying to kill me. I'm not gonna stand for that. I deserve a human life as much as anyone else, and so do the others, even the ones unable to reclaim such a life in any capacity. We were all once humans turned into abominations against our will. I don't want to wipe out humanity, and I know those of us (those who have lost themselves to endless pain and those too driven by revenge to try anything else) too far gone will need to be eliminated, but I want to work on sharing what I think and trying to publicly declare what happened to us while causing as few casualties as possible on both sides.

I don't want to just save humanity, I want to try and get back at least a fraction of ny old life, spend my days enjoying my old hobbies and such, and giving those like me a chance to do so as well.

Here's a fun twist to this one. You get the Symbiote for free! Either you already completed the mission for it already or you simply have one of your own, you get to pick its qualities from the Symbiote CYOA.

>>
>>53123203
You will never have that life of you allow those who rampage mindlessly to live. No one will ever risk trusting or believing anything you say while they can see your sisters who refuse to listen to their cries of mercy. There can be no peace at all with a rabid enemy, nor can you seek peace if you have a rabid ally.

What do you think will happen once all humans are dead? The madness and pain won't go away, and with no united purpose, they will turn on each other.

I agree with the second half that you said, and I feel like the other Nightmare Callers would acknowledge that as well. It certainly doesn't look like there's any real organization other than a united front against humanity, but the cyoa offers choices to create minions that don't feel constant pain, an option with no real strategic benefit listed (though one could argue it would make them easier to train and less likely to go completely wild once not under any guidance). I think this would imply that the Nightmare Caller waking you up would prefer their minions not being in pain enough to at least suggest it to you, whichl, combined with the rest of their demeanor, would hint that she isn't wanting to eleminate humanity out of malice, but because it is the only way they can think of to continue to survive and obtain vengence for what happened to all of them, not because it is the best way to do things, but because they don't believe any other, more merciful plan, would work.

I think, if the ones responsible for our fate could be made known, and brought to justice and villified bt humanity. If they could mourn for the monsters they've slain that were once humans like them, turned into abominations against their will, like we became Nightmare Callers, and if they would accept a cease fire with us, then peace could be made.

Of course, there are also options in the cyoa to do horrible things, like stealing souls or brainwashing people for forever (that two hour limit before they're back to normal might be really useful for passing along information however, imagine is suddenly people kept returning spouting off everything we knew about what happened to us, eventualy it would catch on and people might want to investigate). I think there would obviously be some number of Nightmare Callers that would believe there was nothing left to do but slay humanity in the name of vengence, and there's more I'd like to say, but I'm approaching character limit.

Since a lot off things not specified I go with few assumptions.
>Artifact
Preferably ring or amulet. If this summon method forbid more direct control over demon it is probably because artifact links soul and life of demon and summoner together. Should be pretty good and safe choice.
>50%
Just enough not to be pawn of demon and still letting powerful demon have their free will and not resent you.
>Dina
Judging by her description her fall probably related to bunch of heroes in time long past before she was binded to artifact which was sleeping without a master since those times. Likely said heroes turned out to be few times worse than evil they fought. This results in her drive to crush similar people.
But since we are living in modern age with internet and almost everybody consider themselves moral highground compassing hero when engage in a lot of specified topics especially things like politics. Be it /pol/, reddit, some other major den of political or ideological activists with her powers as fallen angel she shouldnt have any problems influencing and crushing minds and hopes across the globe being power house she is. This easily results in quick boost in power for both her and me.
Not going to order her around unless she deliberately ruin things up for me.

Bride: Crane Twins

Contract (+10)
- True Love, Your Minor Advantage (-5)
- Interests, Your Minor Advantage (-5)
- Attraction, Your Minor Advantage (-5)
- Libido, Her Minor Advantage (+10)
- Empathy, Her Minor Advantage (+10)
- Dominance, Your Major Advantage (-10)
- Others, Your Minor Advantage (-5)
Total: 0

True love, attraction, and dominance will help me keep the twins under control. Maybe. Hopefully. Probably not. Libido because I’m probably going to need that to keep both of them happy. Interests will hopefully give them a tiny bit of an inclination toward something other than causing trouble. Empathy should help me keep tabs on their mood. Others because I had 5 points leftover and variety is nice if you can get away with it.

Aspect (7)
- Pointy Ears (Free)
- Wings (-1)
- Fairy Eyes (-1)
- Antlers (-1)
- Antennae (-1)
- Tongue (-1)
- Luminous (-2)
Total: 0

Likability, durability, senses, agility, and flight. I'm trying to avoid fighting, so first line of defense is to simply not make enemies. Second line is to notice danger quickly and avoid it. Third line is to be able to tank whatever it is.

Possession, Long Con
Spectacle, Projection
Broodmother, Painless
Training, Proxy

Grand Tortoise
Dragon (They regularly serve as my Proxy instructors)
Dynamo
Outsider Medic (They also occasionally serve as proxy instructors, especially when we loose dragons)
Death Walkers

In theory, Death Walkers capture a few scouts, I brainwash 'em, and send them back.
Dragons stick their thumbs up the human's collective assholes, fall back to the front line of tortoises that are supported by medics and dynamos. Illusory dragons make strafing runs, with just enough real dragon runs thrown in to make the threat real. Dragons also handle anti-air as necessary. While all hell is breaking loose, Death Walkers track down problematic foes (Snipers, sight teams, ect) or else leadership, and are supplemented by illusions. While the humans have to contend with all of this, my deep agents start sabotaging shit.
In practice, I assume the line eventually forgets what it's doing and goes into RIP AND TEAR mode, which I guess works too.

Overall, I like it. I feel that there needs to be a bit more personal customization. Maybe nothing super-crunchy, but I'm not even certain what I look like.
Training/Proxy references monster intellect, but further information on this is scarce. I am just assuming Dragons are smartish here. A bit more clarity on this would be good.

I'll give this a go. Haven't read the mystery box as of starting this, so hopefully it doesn't throw me off too much.

>Ideology
Dido's Reunionism: The blood mages seem to be the biggest issue here and I think their power could help deal with our current world-harvesting overconsumption.

>Plane Consumption
Limbo: This will no doubt be a challenge, but it's nonetheless the most sensible approach I feel. High mana return, satisfies two factions and helps us deal with a major threat rather than making new enemies. Second best thing to 'no world' and IMO a good bridge to keep us going with good mana whilst we look for a genuine alternative.

>Policies
Blood Magic: Free
Refugees: Abandoned
Gateways: Strict Control
Diabolism: Experimental
First Contact: Expedition
Mana Regulation: Unregulated
Living Expenses: Maintenance
Government: Limit Research

Overall I've managed to juggle things quite well, I feel. The pragmatists love me, I've taken significant strides towards ending the blood mage conflict and nobody really hates me even if I've annoyed the reformists. I have a lot of mana, and abandoning the refugees is hardly a big shame since the plane I destroyed was Limbo.

>Class
Wizard: Seems like the best compromise between school versatility, spellcraft access and sorceries. I'd like to fluff it as my character's augmentations coming from an otuside source (although he did the research himself) so he's much younger than a standard wizard.

>Attributes
Attack: A
Defense: A
Speed: A
Wit: A

A top-tier mage, but not outside the limits of the ranking system.

>Sorceries
True Immortality
Temporal Spiral
Diabolism
Titanomachy
Eternity's End

Focus on gathering unique and rare sorceries, plus Blood Magic. I eschewed Sabbath since it seemed less practical than the other rare powers.

Build time!

>Oni: Brawn 8 Ala 5 Per 5 Sag 7
>Traveller
>Survival
>Cooking
>Music
So for the core of my build I'm strong and reasonably quick and perceptive, and well suited to traverse the wilds eating delicious things that I may have killed. For the killing part, I choose
>Gunner
>Anti-Material Gun
>Double Tap
>Ceramic Grenade
>Jacketed Bullets
Which should be able to bring down just about any wild game I'm going to encounter, to say nothing of people. Double shot anti-material fire should kill anything, and if I run into something really heavily armored I can add jacketed bullets to the equation.

So, good at making it in the wilderness, shooting game and making it delicious. Sounds comfy. Now to get my stuff.

>Basilisk Scale Armor (I'm strong enough to deal with the weight I think)
>Blackpowder Musket
>Endless Pouch
>Melee Weapon (probably a stout club iron club).
>Multipurpose knife
>Nice wok
>Floating bedroll
>Cloak of Warmth
>Instrument
Basically stuff to keep me comfy and well fed in the wilds, as well as something to entertain myself and friends.

>Kunoichi Assassin
Not a threat in combat and I'm a mostly just lazing about in the wilds, only coming to towns for more gun supplies or with companions, so not much she can do with espionage or disguise to me, and aside from the fact that I hunt for my own food even if she DID somehow manage to poison it, the wok would take care of it. Also she cute
>Ancestral Spirit
Rightfully disappointed by me wasting my life as a well fed hermit I guess, but they can back me up in case I run into trouble my rifle doesn't immediately put down.

>Roi-Ha Cho
>Seol-Yung Cho
They seem like fun, and would probably be good to keep me from getting too hermit-ish.
>Zhangshe Tian
Can probably help him out by using my wilderness skills to find more poisons for him, and if my kunochi waifu ever does manage to poison me somehow he seems like he'd be handy to have around. Quests next!

>Ninja vs Samurai
I think between my rifle punching holes in armor, Tians poisons and the foxes fire we should be well suited to dealing with samurai, especially if we can keep them at a distance and play hit and run games in the wilderness.

>Wokou Wipe Out
Similarly, I bet I could punch holes in the hull of a boat with my gun and Roi-Ha seems well suited for burning them down. Seol-Yung should be good for keeping morale high on the seas, though we may need to protect her from over amorous sailors.

>The Oni Daimyo's Wife
A final test of my survival skills, but I think I'm strong and smart enough to manage the test and find the plant. And I'd have enough money to make a good husband, unless I'd already won the heart of my shinobi stalker

There's no hope if the Nightmare Callers win. People driven by hatred and revenge don't just stop, they'll turn on each other if they ever manage to kill all humans.
>>
>>53122862
>Direct Control (Personalize) - Being pretty will at least let it use Allure, if you have that adaptation.
Just to confirm, is Allure the only adaptation that can be used via a controlled unit?
>Pain Network - You can connect humans to the psychic network of our hordes. Sure, you can use telepathy with it, but the real draw is that the human will suddenly feel the unbearable pain.
If you take Broodmother (Painless), can you limit the connection to just you and your pain-free children?

Checks and balances. It's the citizen's responsibility to keep an eye on their government and keep their power in check. You don't just get to wipe your hands clean because they were sneaky. Humanity shoulders a collective blame here.
>>
>>53125884
No no, you see every voter possesses both perfect knowledge about the candidates and futuresight about what they will do.

Also we can ignore that winning candidate needs only 51% of the votes, even if you didn't vote for him you are complicit in his crime because
A) you voted for the other candidate, thus participating and legitimizing the elections
B) you didn't vote and every nonvote is a vote for victor

You monster.
>>
Well, at least the /pol/ style argument is more or less on topic this time...
>>

The average Joe lacks the means to find that knowledge anon. The government may have been good at silencing would-be whistleblowers, there's too much we don't know about the old government.
>>

Right, because not only does this shadow government NOT fix the elections and let actual democracy take place, but they put their entire platform and goals relating to kidnapping and torturing the citizens to breed superweapons right out in the open for people to judge. Totally.

>>53125914
The kidnapped and tortured citizens were voters too. So if they didn't want to get turned into inhuman monsters living in constant horrendous pain, maybe they shouldn't have voted for "Kidnap people and turn them into inhuman monsters living in constant horrendous pain" party.

Spectacle(Suppress) Would allow you to interact with them without much problem you would have to then drop the disguise later on though

I think I can fill one with just enough doubt that she'll give me a chance. The trick is to find the girl with the most empathy and tell her the whole truth.

>>
>>53126092
I doubt that'd do anything. The truth must be completely buried by now. In fact the same genius saviors of mankind who created the defenders of humanity program are probably the ones who did that to you too.

I imagine humanity and especially the Defenders high on moral superiority. This is their chance to fight an "objective" evil.
>>
>>53126115
Do you just give up after one try?

It's a good idea to ask what she did, exactly. She might have have thrown herself into the middle of the city and started ranting about how fiends are people too for all we know.
>>
>>53123953
When I get home from work, sure.

>>53124959
Yes. They're all disgruntled nihilists.

>>53125032
I considered addong more, but I kinda wanted it to fit in one page. If you jeed an example for what you look like, go with a cleaned up version of the top image. Other than lieutenants, most units aren't that bright, but intelligence does vary. Dragons, medics, and champions sre among the more competent ones.

>>53125232
I guess it would make non-writhing horrors? Think of it like the medics are clerics and himans are undead. They're just casting heal... which hurts humans.

>>53125315
That's a very dangerous plan. Soul trap is essential because your ranks will be running thin after a while.

>>53125589
Well the original part wasn't so dark - you could be a magical girl!

>>53125683
I don't like arbitrary restrictions like that, but it was fine in the original CYOA where Nightmare Callers were just enemies. As far as lore reasons, think of this as the worst-case scenario for what greedy scientists would do in the A New Magical Girl CYOA, if they weren't so insistent on robotics.
>>
>>53126129
Again, this is why you pick your target for empathy. The one that is more concerned with helping her allies or saving civilians than hurting your fiends. That's the one that actually cares about people, and the one easiest to make see you as a person.
>>
>>53122885

>>
>>53126161
Give you an ally on the other side. This is indispensable, as she has easier access to other girls who will listen, and without having to dodge magic and bullets to tell the story.

They would even have the ability to put in some investigation work within human settlements, and perhaps find some evidence. Or else, they could disseminate evidence you have found in the ruins of areas fiends have overrun.
>>
>>53126161
Try to tell her friends and get herself killed for being a traitor.

>>
>>53126228
Lots of empathy and lots of naivety tend to go hand in hand.
>>
>>53126243
A lack of empathy will render whatever you do hopeless. If you can't feel for your sisters on the other side, not even a little, then there's no way you can build any sort of life in any outcome. People who think like that won't be able to build a society if only fiends remain.

Not the author, but I'd say you can just buy level 3, you'd be awfully starved for points otherwise
>>

Half of them are inorganic, suicidal, and/or few enough in number that a single casualty wouldn't leave a breeding pair.
Also, they "warp in".

You'd think they'd mention that in either CYOA.
>>
>>53126452
>I think the flesh warping effect is trying to "heal" them into a monster's form
That doesn't sound like the case here, going by Beri's full(er) statement:
>Think of it like the medics are clerics and himans are undead. They're just casting heal... which hurts humans.
>>
>>53126562
I guess it's also possible that there are simply so many wild fiends out there that you can easily call more up from around the world, rather than that the total number on the planet are increasing to replace your dead.
>>
>>53126549
I can see it coming miles ahead
>Thank god we managed to deal with that failed experiment
>Now that that threat is gone maybe we can get to improve our defender program so something like this will never happen again
>It happens again
>>
>>53126597
If anything, the version of their experiment that succeeded and created the Defender lines will only embolden them to further experiment. Clearly the fiends were just a fluke, in their minds.
>>
>>53122982
It's not really a great "Plan A," though, is it? There are excellent reasons to believe it'll get you killed in short order, to begin with, as both sides of the conflict decide you need to die.

>>53123627
>Of course, there are also options in the cyoa to do horrible things, like stealing souls or brainwashing people for forever (that two hour limit before they're back to normal might be really useful for passing along information however, imagine is suddenly people kept returning spouting off everything we knew about what happened to us, eventualy it would catch on and people might want to investigate).
This is a somewhat better idea. It allows you to transfer information without any risk: the controlled party doesn't know anything about where you are, their allies aren't that likely to kill them (especially if you lead by saying that your control is temporary), you have two hours to say whatever you want, and tipping your hand to the enemy regarding the fact that you have this capability doesn't lose you too much. It's a loss, certainly, but it's not as if knowing that possession is possible enables them to enact an obvious countermeasure.

If I were aimed at infiltration, I might go for:

Possession - Body Hop
Spectacle - Suppress
Technomancy - Hack
Dark Portal - Instant Portal

Infiltrator
Infiltrator
Stalker
Death Walker
Valkyrie
>>
>>53125697
This is a good plan. You can have ways to defend (hide) yourself, and you have organized troops. I do want to point out, however, that while Valkyries are generally superior tp juggernauts, this also means you get less of them. Also, lieutenants somewhat make training less useful as their innate ability is to give your forces direction. It's still good for a backup or for improving your lieutenants a bit.

>>53125743
Yes, Allure is all you can use, via direct control. However, that sub power also guarantees you a bipedal form, which gives manual dexterity and weapon wielding.
No, you can't limit the pain network's recipients. You'd have to send the unfortunate souls all on suicide missions first.

>>53125958
Yes, they do. Same for the other sub-option.

>>53126156
Scientists are just modern-day wizards. No sense of right & wrong 'n' all that.

>>53126200
Well, the defenders get the benefit of ignorance. They're fighting what they believe to be wholely evil.

>>53126240
Nightmare callers don't have eternal pain. If you mean the other units, they're not necessarily sisters.

>>53126278
Too dark? I can try to make something frilly next time.

>>53126372
Eternal pain isn't eternal if you get a happy afterlife. Reincarnation or bust. They just sorta drift in a lonely, painful, void-like dimension as their bodies are rebuilt and await a portal to free them. It should be possible for you to figure out a way to stop this & let them stay dead, but most of them - if capable of rational thought - would probably want revenge first.

>>53126414
Even with painless, most humans aren't accustomed to hundreds of hive-mind voices. It'll be tricky to get through to them.

>>53126503
Ah, thanks. I'll see about fixing that after work.

The Captured Phoenix
The oni Daimyo's Wife
Crown of the Yellow Emperor.
Monstergirl Island.

Not too long after starting his travels, he met Wufang. After a lengthy exchange consisting mostly of abrasive banter, they set out as a group. About three months later, Wufang mentioned a rumor about a captured phoenix, something that piqued Tatsu's curiosity, but it wasn't until they met Hotarubi that they decided to rescue the creature. The three of them managed to rescue the phoenix without much trouble, and were granted the Kiai as a reward. A year later, Kong joined the group, and a week after that, the news that the wife of a Daimyo had fallen ill started spreading throughout the country. Hifumi's knowledge about alchemy proved particularly helpful when looking for the flower that'd act as a remedy and, despite Kong's disdain, they were able to deliver the medicine and cure the Daimyo's wife, but he rejected the Daimyo's offer for the moment. Around 5 years later, they came across the tomb of the Yellow Emperor rather abruptly, but once the terracotta warriors started attacking them, they deemed too late to fall back. Turns out two bags of holding are ideal to hoard treasure. One of the messengers of the Daimyo let Hifumi know about an island recently discovered between the three countries, where they found peculiar creatures. Kong decided to stay, whichever his reasons were. Hifumi and the rest brought two monstergirls. A few years later, once Hifumi felt he'd adventured enough, he returned to the Daimyo, asking if his past offer still stood. Forunately for him, it did, and so he settled with one of the Daimyo's daughters. What happened to the rest of his group after that is unknown.

So each Nightmare Caller has their own network, and if their army consisted entirely of their own, painless children, then the adaptation would just allow for telepathy?
>They just sorta drift in a lonely, painful, void-like dimension as their bodies are rebuilt and await a portal to free them.
Does this turn painless children into regular fiends?
>You could smooth them out a bit
How human-like could Juggernaut/Valkyrie/Dynamo/Outsider Medic be made, roughly speaking?

Since Stalkers seem capable of teleporting via shadows or somesuch, can they move other objects/creatures as they do so?
>>
>>53122862
>every second anon taking broodmother

isn't it bad? It will probably take years to form a small unit and you're supposed to be a general commanding hundreds of giant bad-things. Picking it feels suboptimal, not as bad as allure or soul trap but still nowhere near as good as vitality or dark portal.

Yeah, Nightmare Callers are like servers for their armies. Your units will not revive if something happens to you. Painless children do not get reborn. Like you, they are not bound by the curse of pain (and reincarnation)
Making your units human enough to pass for them is put of the question, but you can at least make them less of an eyesore. You can't change their core properties. For instance, you can't give a dynamo legs. Stalkers cannot take other objects with them. I mean, if you had an object made put of shadows, it would work, but you're not some kinda wizard to do that.

You'd still be stuck with such inhuman features as alien skin tones, horns, anything else prominent. You could boost their complexion and slightly alter their body shape. You *could* turn the juggernauts into amazons, but slimming them down to be curvier without losing any strength would leave them looking excessively muscular. And I'm not talking like it'd appeal to an interest in fit girls. I mean it when I say excessive. You'd have an easier time with valkyries. Of course, you'll want to avoid anything with body horror like devourers. A medic altering another medic could probably give them a dryad-esque appearance given enough time. Focusing on construct-looking units will probably yield the best results. I also recommend picking training so you can teach your medics about beauty - unless you want to direct control them. Beast-types could be made somewhat cuter, but humanoid forms are out of the question.
>>
>>53127389
Is there any particular reason you didn't sort the powers into different columns (one for each Gene), or at least have them be sorted by prerequisite?
If you don't disallow mix-and-matching of power tiers, you could just say players have "4 (or 5) total power tiers".

Limiters, which are on the second page, reduce the "cost" of a superpower by 1. You could have a T4 superpower with an extra limiter and a T2 superpower without extra limiters.

>>53127481
Oh, hey. The lost titan. It is much better for training than a behemoth, even if it isn't quite as big.

>>53127550
Well, the original was meant to be a save-the-world type deal, so making a CYOA for the opposing side is necessarily grim. If you can't decide, recall that Defenders at least have the benefit of ignorance.

>>53127553
You can get some decent results for this. They're unlikely to win any beauty pagents, but you could make them less scary.

>>53127577
Those are some neat choices. Direct Control & Training don't really stack though. They're only upgraded while you're in control, but their training is going to waste while you're steering.
You chose a lot of big guys, I noticed. They'll all take quite a while to produce.

>>53127626

That's fine, I was going for "monsters into monstergirls" rather than "monsters into humans", anyway.
I meant "amazon" more in the sense of appearing to be a muscular woman, not so much in making them human-scale. Giantesses (mini or regular) are fine.
>Focusing on construct-looking units will probably yield the best results. [...] Beast-types could be made somewhat cuter, but humanoid forms are out of the question.

Right now, the powers are all jumbled together with nothing to sort them within the tier except "Requires: X".
That's absolute hell to sort through, since you have to pick your Genes first and there's no visual way to distinguish each power's type.
At the very least, I'd recommend sorting the powers by Gene within the tier, and maybe color-coding each Gene as well.

However, I'd really prefer six different columns, with the tiers divided up within the columns. Kinda like that one Worm CYOA.

>Technomancy - Hack
My current plan is to hijack the communication systems. Obviously they'll be suspicious of a trap if I'm overly nice, but I'm thinking if I play my cards right I can say something that might lead to a resolution.

"Hand over the fugitive scientists that turned us into these abominations!"
Perhaps then some people will start to question what I mean.

>Vitality - Undying
Hopefully this doesn't literally mean "can never be killed ever", but I want to be able to survive when the humans initially attack me out of suspicion.

>Spectacle - Suppress
What better way to send a message? Pain Network's telepathy might be better for connecting with humans, but "unbearable pain" isn't exactly a good way to offer an olive branch. Also Suppress will make it less likely for me to be shot on sight.

>Broodmother - Painless
If it's possible to stop suffering, even a little bit, we must do so!

Soldiers:

>Thorn Turtles
Hey, I still need bodyguards

>Outsider Medic
I hope they can heal humans normally too. Even if it doesn't make them stop, it'd at least give them pause as to what my intentions are.

>Gamera
See Thorn Turtles.

>Lieutenant
I don't want to end up replenishing more of those that are suffering horribly. These at least seem sapient enough to not simply be driven mad from the pain.

Vitality - instant heal - vitality is a no brainer and healing is superior to undying in combat
Broodmother - painless - always nice to have more units. Don't need frontline powers like Technomancy because I'm not going to be in the frontline.
Training - proxy - I want elite troops, not cannon fodder
>Fiends
Dynamos - main damage source
Thorn Turtles - to protect Dynamos
Valkyries - recon and air support, not going to make them attack unless absolutely necessary. Almost took dragons instead of them but I needed scouts.
Outsider Medics - should be useful in this unit composition.
Lieutnant - Armies with more than one brain tend to do better in combat

>>
>>53127820
The problem with juggernauts is more of how bulky they are. Giving them curves won't work so well. I recommended valkyries instead since they're more slender. Lost titans are actually very human-like, excluding their size, so they'd be good candidates. These are just descriptive categories. They don't mean much, but okay. Those with * are extra hideous:
>Construct-like
Dynamo, medic, goliath
>Human-like
Juggernaut, valkyrie, living beacon*, infiltrator, champion, lieutenant?, lost titan
>Beast-like
Turtle, walker, hunter, tortoise, dragon, warbeast*
>Horrors
Devouerer*, stalker, seer*

>>53127626
Wait, I lied to you. I thought you meant YOU summoning Dark Portals. The living beacon (unit) have infinite supplies from unknown origin.

>>53127942
Undying isn't death-immunity. You can die if you jump into a volcano, for example.
Also, you do NOT want to have your medics try to heal humans. Maybe if you Direct Control one, it could work.

>>53127953
Maybe? Did you play NieR: Automata. The machines are a good analogy here. There will be a LOT of imitation.

>>53127938
Because that restriction was in the lore before I decided to make the CYOA.

>>53128039
Makes sense. I agree that dark portal puts you in unnecessary danger that is incongruous with direct control. It's more of an instant-bodyguard option for emergencies.
>>
>>53128123
Okay... yeah, maybe I'll keep the medics at the back lines then.

But in a world like this, I'd have no other reason for living if I couldn't at least make things a little better for everyone.
>>
>>53128093
Focusing on high range damage from behind shields is kinda cheesy, but sometimes bastion-reinhardt is what it takes to win matches. You even have sonar arrows and a mercy to support it.

>>53128109
That's certainly noble of you. As to why you were chosen, just your run-of-the-mill "hospital checkups leak data to determine who is most compatible for human experimentation."

>>53128152

>>
>>53128123
So uh, the souls of the humans that were transformed into pain filled beasts reimcarnate into more monsters indefinitely as long as we're there to summon them, but do the ones we create through broodmother have their souls too?

Like, am I just creating MORE monsters that happen to not feel pain, or can I actually help the souls stuck in a cycle of hell actually find at least a minor reprieve?

>>
>>53126807
>Even with painless, most humans aren't accustomed to hundreds of hive-mind voices. It'll be tricky to get through to them.
It's definitely a long shot, but it's the best approach to a non-violent strategy I can think up. Although maybe it'd be better to swap Training for Possession? I initially avoided that one because it'd be really creepy to be contacted that way, but if you had Possession as an additional communications channel—and it's definitely the best if you want to talk to the Defenders without dying—it could complement the telepathy strategy. But if I do that, I'm edging closer to helplessness in actual combat...

>>53127226
I just realized there's probably some serious cognitive dissonance involved in taking both Broodmother and Allure. @_@
(Thank you for picking a cute illustration for Broodmother.)

If this were a story, which traits would make for the most compelling and interesting Fiend character? Assuming that the meat of the story comes from the conflict, and the ambiguity regarding the nature, motivations, and ultimate fate of the Fiends, and that we want a happy or at leas bittersweet ending.

I nominate the following:

>Possession - Body Hop
Allows for some creepy build-up, as we follow the Defenders prior to the reveal of the Nightmare Callers themselves; possessed characters can give us information about the Fiends without revealing the intelligent ones directly.
>Vitality - Undying
There's some point in the story where this Fiend character gets reduced to a not-quite-dead decapitated head, probably after being captured and dissected. It's a striking visual that emphasizes the inhuman nature of the Fiends.
>Pain Network - WiFi
This is clearly an important plot point of some kind.

The last is really a toss-up between Broodmother, Dark Portal, Spectacle, and Technomancy. Technomancy - Hack gives our Nightmare Caller a lot more credibility in terms of getting close to the Defenders on her own, and it's a fun power to watch.
>>
>>53122862
Can we get an actual number on how many you get if you pick them? Like, per pick?
>>
>>53125365
If you take Deus Vult, can the nuns follow you to your pocket dimension? If they can't, then you could just hide there where they can never reach you and use hive minded slaves to expand your influence.
>>
>>53128259
You're creating fresh, unpained life with Broodmother - painless. With enough time and resources for research, you van eventually save the cyclical, suffering souls. In the mean time, they technically don't suffer while dead & regenerating - thus the MO of explosive seers.

>>53128330
Basically, Muderbots try to develop culture but can only do so by copying humans. They eventually kinda make progress, even founding a religion, but it ends very poorly.

>>53128379
Helplessness in actual combat isn't that bad when you should be avoiding it anyhow. I'd say broodmother might be best in a second fiend character, so that the first is given more things to think about, questioning her friend's willingness to birth monsters.
>>
>>53128423
>encouraging minmaxing

why
>>
>>53128549
It needs to be clear so people don't assume stupid shit.
>>
>>53128538
>They eventually kinda make progress, even founding a religion, but it ends very poorly.
Do you suppose things might go a bit better in this case, what with the formerly-human broodmother providing guidance?
>>
>>53128379
Spectacle also gives the character some credibility in terms of getting close to the Defenders, but it's not that exciting to watch, and we already have a similar dramatic reveal ("It was the little girl all along!") from Possession. Additionally, illusion powers, while great for the CYOA, don't match the overall themes of the story too well.

Broodmother is delightfully creepy, especially when you put it on a cute character, rather than the stereotypical horrid bloated monstrosity (e.g., Dragon Age). It also partially satisfies a question the reader/viewer undoubtedly has (where are these creatures coming from?). But it's not that easy to work into the story... maybe the characters come across a bunch of Fiend eggs and are horrified to discover that they were laid by the creepy cute girl who's trying to communicate with them?

Finally, Dark Portal gives the character something scary and powerful that she can do on her own. Without something offensive, the Nightmare Caller isn't really a creditable threat. That might not be a bad thing! You can do an interesting story where the Caller is almost helpless, relying on her Fiend allies for survival. However, it removes a lot of the dramatic tension from the scene where the Defenders and the Caller finally meet, because the Defenders clearly have the upper hand from the beginning.

Units:
>Lieutenant
Fascinatingly spooky! And it also reveals the less-than-bright nature of most of the Fiends without a lot of exposition. A must-have.
>Lost Titan
Another plot point, for sure.
>Infiltrator
Fits with the notion that our Nightmare Caller character is trying to get through to the Defenders, albeit in the most unnerving ways imaginable.
>Valkyrie
Probably revealed in a Caller-on-Caller battle midway through, where the Juggernauts face off against the Valkyries with the confused Defenders caught in the middle. Plus our Caller character needs some credible minions.

I wanna try to pump out as many babies as possible, and I can personalize them to use my allure power so I'm safe from battle. And the very fast growing babes will also be very fast learners thanks to my training.

>Hunter
A good base fodder unit. I want something that the enemy will have to immediately direct their attention to.
>Dynamo
Causing chaos from the backlines and good against air units.
>Devourer
Gonna be very good for me if I want to play the long game.
>Lieutenant
Gotta put all that learnin' to good use.
>Lost titan
This is going to scare the shit out of them, and will be a good attack against enemy morale.

>You've been asleep for far to long
>this ability is to high profile
>>
>>53128611
>Dynamo
I really think Valkyrie + Dynamo would for make a thematically interesting combat group, aimed at speed/air superiority. But this one's another toss-up. Some Fiends, like the Explosive Seer, the Hunter, and especially the Devourer, are just too evil for a sympathetic character to take, and you don't want to put the Goliath and the Lost Titan too close together, but most of the others would work well.

>>53128538
>I'd say broodmother might be best in a second fiend character, so that the first is given more things to think about, questioning her friend's willingness to birth monsters.
I think you're right. Technomancy is a better choice. It gives the character something she can do on her own, it's at least a little scary, it helps her get close to the defenders, and it's not a power that would lose the sympathy of the reader/audience.

>>53128611

>>53128716
Ooh, you chose some of the less popular units. Not many people pick devourer despite how incredibly dangerous they are. Hunter is an interesting fodder choice, too. Not as tanky or numerous as juggernauts, but they pose a much more significant threat with their speed.
Thanks, I'll fix those typos!

Modus operandi is simple - during one night, scouts from a human base rescue a little girl who was being attacked by Crawling Chaos. She's injured, but she'll live. Her parents weren't so lucky, it seems - they're very much dead, looks like the scouts arrived just on time to save her.
She's taken in by them, visibly quite shocked, can't say much, but seems to appreciate any help she gets. By dawn, they'll send her to a nearby city, but maybe she'll stay for the night, especially given how the communications are malfunctioning today, and how the crawling chaos is active tonight.

But some hours after she is taken in, things will conspire against the humans. Computers, door locks, lights, cameras, drones, the very alarm system, everything will malfunction. People will behave oddly...
And when they realize their fellows are being taken out by shadows and replaced by dopples, the hideous growth that is spreading far too quickly via the air ducts, and the death walkers stalking around every corner?

It will be far too late already.

All units are trained to prioritize cutting off and preventing all means of outside communications/access, are specialized on how and when to attack to maximize stealth and efficient, quick kills. I will just sit back wherever the humans place me and orchestrate everything via hacking, as well as make naive humans sacrifice themselves to "save" me from my few units that are trained to "attack" me.
All the human staff will be replaced by Dopples, all damage will be repaired, evidence cleared, and a Lieutenant shall be hidden deep within, overseeing the base operations thereafter.
After our forces are replenished, we march on to the next target. The base will seem to function normally, for all purposes, but any outside visitors just add to the number of infiltrators.

Now for the Defenders side! It's easiest to start with the Generals. We should see all of them, because they complement each other very well.

Melody is clearly a major antagonist. She doesn't trust any Callers, ever, and she might even sabotage efforts at a peaceful reconciliation out of mistrust and a desire for vengeance.

Sarah's the convert. She's the first one to realize the true nature of the Fiends, and the first to press for some kind of end to the conflict. This isn't a trivial achievement, because she's lost a lot of good soldiers to the Fiends already, and it hurts, but her natural compassion and idealism makes it possible for her to risk trusting a Caller. Sarah is the one who gets exposed to the Pain Network.

Natalie's the hard-nosed skeptic. She's not as sympathetic as Sarah, and it takes quite some convincing to get her to believe that the Callers aren't wholly evil. Natalie is interested in capturing and studying our Caller character, and she's the first to suspect that something is rotten within the Human Collective Government. Perhaps it's a collaboration between Natalie and Melody that reduces our Caller character to a head?

Lyn's the one who gets Possessed. It's a terrifying experience, and it works against her sweet and friendly nature when it comes to empathizing with the Fiends. Despite this, she's the second of the generals to be swayed to the view that the Fiends aren't complete monsters, and she's the one who finally gets everyone to work together to investigate the Fiends rather than annihilate them. Until Melody loses it, anyway.

I'm going to be the reconnaissance and officer training person basically.
I will create the stronger fiends that are free from pain and have them trained as captains and generals that can teach other sister's monsters and lead them so they can be more effective.

My recon squad is what will occupy most of my time while I am pushing out these units and will try and take down high priority targets from the inside using possession and maybe even try and initiate contact using infiltrators as my proxies with direct control so that more peaceful options can be explored.

Lastly I can use the Lost Titan with direct control and upgrade to protect my position or take down any high priority location as a spearhead for the forces.

Totally stealing this for the first few episodes of my hypothetical anime.

As far as characters go:

A snarky dullahan with Death Sight would be great, and it establishes that psychic powers are a thing in this setting before we know that the fiends have them. Her jerkish demeanor is really her way of coping with her power.

A healer slime would be another good one. She's a kind of cheery and kind of sad; she really wishes she wasn't in a war, but is trying to make the best of things. She has Natural Weapons because it's funny and unexpected.

A magical girl is simply necessary. A magical girl with power armor. Cute power armor. Maybe a Shield Deployer? It's notable that magical girls and Fiends are the products of the same research, because one is good and pure and the other is... well, pretty darn scary, at the very least. She also uses Magic Ammo.

I want to put an alarune character in there because we never see them in anything. Also, Artillery and Harvest are visually interesting. I don't know what her role is, or what her equipment is. Heavy Gun, maybe?

A seer character with Eye Lasers would also be good, for the same reasons as the alarune. I have similar problems figuring out her combat role, though. Flight armor?

A hot-heated shonen-y drake character could be fun. Clearly the demolitions expert.

Tanks, walkers, hover bikes, support drones, heavy shielders, and combat armor all strongly support the uniqueness of the setting and should definitely appear often.

Going by this thread, if you want (you)s, make them a little girl. The faggots here seem to love it.
>>
>>53129716
Most people are hetero men.

>>53129752
>Hurr everyone is a bitter NEET except for me

don't you fags have anything better to do?
>>
>>53129716
Fujos and other shitposters. I will not put those options in because they annoy me even though I'm bi.
>>
>>53129743
Anon is going to either want one of a few things. Either to be turned into a girl, a trap, or shota, or anon will want all the women to flock to him for being the only manly man in a realm of girly boys.
>>
>>53129769
Shoggoths can't get gfs and most of them develop a hatred for cute guys who do have them.
>>
>>53129752
Do people really believe this kind of things?
>>
>>53129769
Right? A shoggoth should be able to look however it wants
>>
>>53129821
If they do, they're delusional. I don't think I've ever seen anyone complain about males existing unless those males were up under a waifu's ass.
>>
>>53129770
the player will get a new body either way, but not fully customizable, other factors will determine it

>>53129808
>>53129788
Even if I let the player pick his gender, I'll still have to make one of the sexes stronger.
>>
>>53129821
Yes. It reminds me of /r9k/. Same dislike of women and obsession with waifus. Also a strong aversion to normal guys, especially if they're good-looking. A lot of them are also very insecure. They won't tolerate other guys in cyoas at all.

That's why there are so many all-female cyoas where everything up to the narrator AI is a girl.
>>
>>53129858
That wasn't my point. I was presenting you the fetish scenarios with some historical popularity here.

Anons have liked becoming the woman in a woman-dominated world. Anon has liked being a cute trap bullied by girls. Anon has enjoyed being a cute shota picked up by a strong girl. Anon has also enjoyed, however, being the manly man all the testosterone-starved ladies flock to.

Ok, let me try to work this out. Angel is a radical femdom feminist, who hates being a radical femdom feminist and thus always creates cumslut breeder builds. Is that right? Because it really seems ass backwards.

>>
>>53129821
Consider this. How many bro cyoas are there? Just cyoas in which anon has fun with a bunch of close guy friends. Almost none. Despite it being a hugely popular trope.

This place hates guys almost as much as it hates women. The more focused on waifus a cyoa is, the less other guys will exist.
>>
>>53129969
That's like complaining that there's no scifi in a fantasy CYOA you samefagging retard.
>>
>>53129876
You are delusional and I'm tired of your kind projecting their own internalized /r9k/ diatribe especially when their leaps of logic are almost always incredibly superficial and just plain wrong.
Most CYOAs don't have guys because most peolle here are hetero males and when there is some male options or characters I've never seen such reactions.
And honestly you could see everything through that weird anti-/r9k/ framework, so indeed you should go back to /r9k/ because you havethe same kinsof warped, quasi-conspirationists perceptions.
>>
>>53129889
No, she doesn't consciously hate being radical. She is unconsciously radical due to inner turmoil. She's not at peace with her desires and sexual needs, this insecurity causes her to latch on to something opposite.

However, cyoas are about choice and we reveal our innermost self when making a non-joke build. What she really wants is to be beautiful, wanted, and forcibly filled with seed. For someone to have the strength to help her abandon her delusions, as she cannot do so on her own

Negotiation from a distance.

We're going to need to go somewhere after this, aren't we?

Humanoid, so Direct Control works well, and they can fly. What's not to like?

>Outsider Medic
Can these guys heal people, or reverse what they do to people? If so, it'd be great to be able to temporarily hit someone with one as a "don't do that," then undo it.
>Grand Tortoise
I do still need some protection, just in case they try to lead me into a trap.

Great for working with through Proxy.

See, this is what I mean.

Other guys existing in a waifu cyoa is as "unnatural" to these people as sci fi in a fantasy cyoa.

Glad to know you've liked it, storyanon! The other idea I had was to be Undying, and have my corpse parts taken in for research, all hell breaking loose because of being actually still alive and very capable of summoning and hacking.

But I think that the stealthy, deceptive approach has much more charm to it.

>>53130052
But sister, listen to the cries of our friends. They are in constant pain. They cannot think. Only the kind broodmothers release their young from this suffering. But the others? The only peace they will ever have is that found in vengeance..

We cannot take the one thing that is still theirs away from them. They deserve such closure.
>>
>>53129716
Honestly, I'm sympathetic. It's 99.9% waifus out there, and it's not unreasonable to ask for a few husbando CYOAs. And you're far, far less annoying than the Saber shitposter.

But I'm 1) straight and 2) so romantically inexperienced that I can't write a waifu/husbando CYOA without it coming across as utterly unrealistic. So I can't help you, really.

צדק, צדק תמשיך. Justice, justice you shall pursue. Without justice, the capacity to deal punishment to the guilty but mercy to the innocent, what are we but the monsters they call us?

Punishment for the guilty, those that made us what we are. Mercy for the innocent, those who do not know our story. If we lose mercy and justice, we lose the last of our humanity. We must not lose sight of it.

I'd put the Special Ops. group in as minor characters subordinate to the Defenders. In reality, they're there to keep tabs on the Defenders and take action if they begin to suspect the horrible truth. And, following the contact with and capture of the Caller character, they do indeed take action, subduing the Defenders. Things look grim for our heroes, but the Caller's minions mount a spectacularly gory rescue best described as "metal."

The Special Ops. team does not make it.

I think I'd do three Caller characters:

Caller #1 is the one who devises the plan to contact, and ultimately make peace with, the Defenders. We see this plan unfold through the eyes of the Defenders, as they find a Lieutenant, Lyn gets possessed, and Sarah is ultimately exposed to the Pain Network. Following the contact with the Pain Network, the story of Caller #1 is told from glass tank onwards in a flashback sequence, presumably being conveyed through telepathy.

Caller #2 is the broodmother. She doesn't like the war between the Fiends and humanity, but she accepts it as inevitable, and believes that it can only end with the extinction of one side or the other. She genuinely cares for her dim-witted, grotesque offspring.

Caller #3 hates humanity and is dedicated to its destruction. She particularly resents the fact that the Defenders are accepted and even lauded by humans while the Fiends are subject to constant pain and, ultimately, annihilation. Caller #3 figures out Caller #1's plan and moves to kill her before she can complete it; this is what underlies the Juggernaut-vs-Valkyrie fight.

You could wring a funny exchange out of the interaction between the dullahan and the reduced-to-a-head Caller.
>>
>>53130587
At some point, probably during the bit with the Special Ops. team, one of the Defenders characters is killed, and wakes up in a tank (a la the Revival ability). This is ominous, because we've already seen that Callers wake up in tanks. There is some parallel between the two.

>>53129360
It's the mark of a really good CYOA, for me. I mostly use them to think up neat characters or stories. Interestingly, that makes it difficult to enjoy some very popular CYOAs, like Stardust or Battlemage.

>>53130204
It makes a great introduction. You set up the war setting, mention the Fiends, and establish the Defender characters while they rescue and rehabilitate the little girl. It's the dullahan who catches on to the fact that something has gone horribly wrong— her death sight shows her something that shouldn't be possible in a secure human base. The Defenders live, but a lot of other people don't. It sets up the Fiends as a harrowing threat from the very beginning.
>>
>>53130587
I'd watch this.

Also, here's an idea: Protagonist was given a special, experimental "bonus" tattoo because protagonist. There's a Magical Girl character, specifically the one who creates the protagonist, who's a "traitor" working for the higher-ups. The "experimental" power-up tattoo was really designed to be a power sink, such that if the protagonist was killed by a Magical Girl that power could be "drained" and used. Protagonist and Co try to negotiate with a Nightmare Caller, achieve peace, and then Protagonist gets shot in the back by a blast of magic from Ms. Traitor. Traitor uses the power drain to exert control over all "altered" humans in the vicinity, commanding the Nightmare Caller to attempt to kill the protagonists and almost-entirely shutting down the protagonist's powers;
Nightmare Caller uses a little power before the takeover to save the Protagonist's life, so they all manage to escape, and suddenly we're in a guerrilla war as the Bad Guys are taking over.

Bit melodramatic, but it sounds cool as hell, you gotta admit. It also may, in part, have been stolen from Xenoblade Chronicles, but it's different enough that I don't care. Best plot twist I've ever seen in a video game, honestly.

>>53129807

Broodmother -> Painless
Vitality -> Instant Heal
Allure -> Love Slave
Direct Control -> Personalize

Dynamo
Outsider Medic
Living Beacon
Lieutenant
Dragon

I have no desire to destroy humanity because of the actions of a few humans. I will try to negotiate with humanity from a distance, and if that fails I'll just slowly produce dragons as a broodmother and use them to defend myself. To kill time, I'll take over the occasional minion, make it look like me, and then try to make sweet sweet love to a human.

I will become the legendary perverted ravager.
>>
>>53131343
Which units would you directly control? Lieutenants are in fleshy balls. Living beacons are way, way, WAY beyong thicc. Dynamo are pretty big. Outsider medics might work, but your tendrils are like a body-horror-inducing jellyfish sting. Dragon girl could work, but those are HUGE, way bigger than dynamos. None of them seem suitable for intimacy.
>>
>>53131527
I was under the impression that transforming units to look like you would also transform the tendrils of the outsider medics. Is it not a complete transformation? If the transformation is not complete, then I could replace the portals with Infiltrators/Dopplegangers.

If I took infiltrators I would not need to take Personalize, since they would transform into me flawlessly anyway. I could instead take upgrade and boost their stats greatly.
>>
>>53131167
Aw shit nigga.
Very cool.
>>
>>53131685
The tendrils are how the medics heal. If they were removed, personalize would actually weaken them. You're still mostly you with personalize. It's like a cute, monster girl hybrid transformation.

While she is weaker than Naifa and Naifa is weaker than Conquest, I think the difference is in their personalities and the roles they are best suited to.
Niech is the weakest but she is the most dependent on you and openly affectionate, making me think she's the "bodyguard" option, strong enough to protect you from most things you'd commonly come across and not really possessing a will of her own.
Naifa differs in that she has a well defined sense of justice and since you won't be able to 100% the summoning you can't totally control her. So you're not going to just sit around with her, she's going to want to go seek out evil and you're going to have to go with her, making her more of a "bounty hunter" or "adventurer".
Conquest is Naifa on steroids, basically the same but even more independent, powerful, and purposeful. She wants to take over the world and since the best you can do with her is 50% you're definitely going to get dragged along. She also as the least personal interest in you, she cares about you but in a professional rather than personal sense, making her more of an "emperor".
tl;dr:
Take Niech if you just want to hang out and not have to worry about monsters or muggers.
Take Naifa if you want to go fight monsters and protect people.
Take Conquest if you want to take over the world and be a supreme dictator.
