It's neat that filtering for "WIP" nets me both the current /WIP/ thread *and* /btg/ (>>53091147). What're you ladz workin' on?

I was getting a little worried when it wouldn't let me post.

I've spent an hour or two building a prototype for my ocean bases. It's ugly right now, but it's also my first time working with Lexan *and* working with a Dremel, so I expect they'll get better as I get closer to a workable master for resin casts. Same overall height once the sand/other terrain substitutes are in as a normal base would be, but 3mm of recess to do ocean textures and water effects in. Bottom right is what I'm aiming for, though with less foaminess. I'm working on these for flyer bases as well, which I'm going to try and keep to Lexan for stability's sake. Sand putty and water effects are in the mail, so no news for a few days. Basing scheme ideas, currently:

>Kabalites/Wyches: Sand bases, bloody sands in the latter's case, maybe a few with elements of water.
>Scourges: On their rocks in the middle of the sea, splashing foam, et cetera. Core of my army, so they'll get the most.
>Talos/Cronos/Razorwing: Over water with jet/gravitic wake behind
>Raiders/Reavers: Leave them on their clear bases at the moment? I'd like to do them like the Talos/Cronos/Razorwing, but I'm not sure how well I'd be able to actually build a recessed base without a rim to work with.
I'm still debating how I want to do my Archon, Succubus, and Haemonculus. Succubus will probably be on-rock like the Scourges since I'm using Scourge legs, Archon I don't have an idea yet, same with Haem or his Grotesques/Wracks.

Thoughts on either part?

>>53118378
good question. I want to build a table to play on so i've been looking for a rule set. I was thinking rogue stars or laserburn but they're both a bit grainy for me. I might use warpath firefight with a very low model could, or use double tap and just steal some of the scenarios character building stuff from rogue stars.

What are the essential citadel washes? I know nuln oil gets touted as one for general and Necron purposes as well greasing effects but anything else?
I think the blue wash as well for various weapon effects like force weapons and barrels
>>
>>53118960
depends what you paint. I don't use nuln oil at all but use alot of agrax and flesh shade, plus crimson and occasionally blue for tattoos and bruising.

to be honest if I was going to restock my whole paint rack, I'd just buy them all.
>>
>>53118960
Agrax is the one you'll need the most. It works for leather, dark skin, clothes, literally anything that isn't metal and even then it works for gold and bronze.

>How to Moldlines

Moldlines are one of those things that enrage me when I see them on a painted model...but I have no room to look down at anyone. Doesn't matter how I turn the model and look at it, I always miss at least one, and it sits there mocking me.
>>
>>53119014

I don't really want to buy like 30 different paints so I don't want to buy every single paint

Total accident that the hair matches the bark too, it was going to be dark brown but after a few fuckups it ended up like this.

Have you checked the mega archives in the 40k general already?

>Also how do you paint straight lines?
The first instinct would be to go slow and steady. Since few people actually have steady hands that tends to look squiggly. Best you can hope for when going slow is consistent line thickness. Probably won't be a straight line though.

Best way to do it is quickly. If you got the necessary brush control and practice you'll even be able to get a consistent thickness over curved surfaces.

Things you need are
>confidence to try it
>skill to pull it off
>brush with reservoir big enough to do it all in one go

What's the go with drilling for magnets etc?
I'd be worried about going too far with an electric drill, but can't imagine how you'd manage to hold the piece without breaking it while using a hand drill.

I'm guessing it's just "Be really fucking careful" with the electric?
>>
>>53123808
Be carefull and go really slow.
>>
>>53123808
>I'm guessing it's just "Be really fucking careful" with the electric?

That... but I highly do not recommend it. You can easily break the plastic with an electric drill and if it gets caught it will fly out of your hands and smash against the wall. Get a hand drill, the right sized bits to match the size of your mags.

Also very important, make sure you always have your mags on the right side. You want it to be consistent for your whole army. As for drilling, go as deep as the mag needs to go, and use super glue to have it stick, plastic and PVA is too weak to make sure the mag doesn't slide out with the one it's attracted to.
>>
>>53123808
Drill a bit, check the hole, keep drilling if it its too shallow.
>>
>>53123851
How do you hold it while drilling, with a hand drill?

Maybe it's cause I'm used to a super old drill for woodwork when I think hand drill, but it very much required 2 hands to operate.
>>
>>53123911
You can buy a hand drill from some hobby shops, it should use one hand. Use a sharpie to mark the magnets

I already posted in /40kg/ but they ain't helpful so I repost it here.
I might want to start a chaos themed GSC army... like, using GSC rules but using chaos models and/or GSC and chaos kitbashes.
How would you think I should go about it?
Using regular chaos cultists as neophytes is a no-brainer (or probably use GSC weapons and some bits with chaos cultists) and the vehicles is also clear but what would work best as acolytes or abarents and the other models?
Opinions?
>>
Epidemius is back in stock, but he's 30 fucking quid. Not paying that for finecast shit, how would you kitbash him?

I need him to be a Tallyma of Nurgle, but he doesn't have to look the same as I'm not fluffing him as THE Epidemius
>>
>>53124271
>and the vehicles is also clear but what would work best as acolytes or abarents and the other models?
>Opinions?
Does your army have a particular flavor of chaos?

Cause generally speaking you could just use mutants for those other guys.
Kitbashing parts from all the ranges can yield surprisingly good looking mutants.
There was someone here a while ago that did a Scavvy warband for Necromunda.
Mixing beastmen, skaven, ork, kroot and zombie bits should get you halfway there.

The other obvious options are of course 3rd party manufacturers.
What specifically you could use depends of course on your theme, which is the reason I'm asking.
If you are going with Khorne I could see some werewolf looking mutants work for aberrants, or if you are going with Nurgle you could kitbash Blighkings and the like.
The nice thing about this is that Chaos gives you the ultimate freedom thematically .
>>
>>53123795
Neat.
>>
>>53124275
Northstar miniatures has a rather stylish Insectoid demon man for Frostgrave. Could account for the palaquin and would thematically fit to nurgle too.
>>
>>53124275
>>53124440
>>
>>53124418
I would go with chaos undivided because using GSC rules, they only have a general cult flavour and not a particular chaos god flavour... rules wise at least.
But yeah, maybe I could kitbash some daemon parts from minor daemons like bloodletters or even possessed marines to make some mutants?
I just had the idea that I could just use a changeling as a magus but he is more tzeench flavor than chaos undivided so maybe not? I don't know.
>>
>>53124440
>>53124459
Good shout, but won't that mean I can't use it in tournaments or even in a GW?
>>
>>53124130
looks great! what's your recipe for the cloak and the red parts?
>>
>>53124505
You could use any of the chaos sorcerers.
If you check reaper for wizards there are loads of other options too.
Heresy has some nice cultits as well.

If I was in your shoes I'd also look into the undead range. The various flavours of ghouls could be useful for mutant conversions.
Maybe even the odd LotR sculpts. There are half trolls in that range. Which reminds me of Scotia Grendel. Their Urban War range has some odds and ends that might be useful too. Nothing particularly chaotic, but they have some cybered up sumo ringers that act as bodyguard in the game. Those would fit right into 40k as well.

The sky's the limit basically. There are some pretty good Inq28 blogs out there. They always have some original ideas for kitbashes. Maybe you could approach building your magos from the same angle that people approach building inquisitors.

I don't know the first thing about gundam, but markers are something people also use for blacklineing miniatures.

Unless the gundam markers are specifically made for this purpose, you usually have to varnish your model afterwards.
Don't want to smudge the markers over your paintjob.

Total new to the hobby here (years in the fluff but never painted mostly because I didn't think I would be able to).
This is the first minia I've ever done.

Damn but highlight is tough (the fact that I have shitty brushes probably does not help).

Anyway any tips?

And should I continue to struggle to "manual" highlight or veer to drybrush (but I do not really like the "toony" feeling I get with drybrushing)?
>>
>>53127449
Looks nice, especially for a first mini.
Just keep practicing and you'll get better with highlighting.
Drybrushing is a trap, it only ever looks good for doing very specific things
>>
>>53127449
if that's turely your first mini you will be able to achieve golden demon standard.
>>
>>53127546
You are way too kind.

I admit in having read every painting guide you guys posted around but this is my first paint action ever.
Actually, I just realized it's the first time EVER I picked up a brush.

As far as "blending" (don't know the actual term) from a darker colour to a lighter one, should I try to achieve this using white to cut a darker colour or by using complete different paints?
Also, how do I decide where to highlight?
Is protruding = highlight a rule?
I found myself confused in the middle of this minia trying to decide where I should have highlighted non obvious areas (like the shoulders).
Also kinda messed up the face, I think I will paint my next one before glueing it together.

Thanks guys

I have been trying the Duncan technique of dipping just the tip of the brush but I'm still really hit or miss with my thinning. It probably doesn't help that a lot of my paints are either several years old citadel paints stored in a garage for years, or new vellejo paints, or a few random acrylics that may or may not be appropriate for painting models.

>>53127449
If you don't like toony looking models, then don't drybrush. (except in very specific situations)

Personally I like em toony though, but thats just my personal style depending on what I'm painting.
(Usually chaos get toony, and space marines get less-toony)

How long did that model take you? because that looks fantastic anon!

I'm a king guy but honestly for anyones first mini thats a sensational effort, the white is totally smooth and the source lighting effect is good, i'd be happy with that mini and i've been painint for 20 years.

Whenever i've taught some people to paint I try to get them to just focus on being neat and thinning their paints but you have jumped to quite an advanced level all by yourself so yo ushould be feeling pretty chuffed.

A tip for highlighting is after you have your paints laid down and are ready to highlight is to just get a lamp and shine it down from whichever angle, see where it falls naturally

Also sharp metal edges also wear first in real life so you can always give a highlight to that. This mauser safety is a good example.

>I've been told it is better to make your base first before adding your model on it but I'm concerned about my model not sticking well to it or the grit/static grass etc peeling off.

It depends on how involved your base is.

If you need to paint whatever it is your model is based with, you should either attach the model and prime them in one go (as I did here), or else build up your base separately, treating it like it was another model you happened to be painting at the same time.

You'll find that what's goofy today will be stylish tomorrow after lots of practice.

I have models that have had Goblin Green sand PVA'd and painted over them for more than 25 years, and only occasionally has anything ever come off - usually due to the same kind of stupid catastrophes (i.e., being dropped) that would necessitate repairs no matter what kind of glue you used.

yes, but afaik a laser printer works better since you are going to soak the paper in water.
I think i've read about using varnish to prevent the water to reach the ink if you use a non-laser-printer.
>>
>>53129614
600dpi, set your printer for photo paper. You can either clear coat with matte (go gentle; won't work if it's too thick) or use the Testor's brand spray (lays down thin). Give the sheet you print a good day to dry before you spray it. Then just trim up the decal and apply as normal.

Also some background on the model

Its the vanguard vet sergeant version of carab culln, the forge world Red Scorpions character who eventually becomes chapter master.

He was a vet sergeant during the siege of vraks (which is what my army is modeled after)

So being on vraks, he has definitely seen some fucked up chaotic shit

I have no idea how to proceed with my Magos since I don't know how I could add his Mechadendrites in a way that keeps him portable and am scared as all hell to actually start sculpting his robes once the rest is done, since all I ever did with greenstuff was using it to fill holes and glue stuff together. Thanks! I airbrushed on Naggaroth Night, then Xereus Purple, then Genestealer Purple, then drew them all together with few coats of Druchii Violet over the whole thing. I seriously thought I was gonna have to redo it because the colors looked so start against each other, but the purple wash really brought them all together into a good transition. I'm slapping that wash on every transition I do now, including the carapaces.

Wanted to try a color scheme like the one of jehuty in ZOE 1. Will had white stripes and gold here and there.

Iron Knight Anon here from last thread. I've ordered some shields for them and will be hopefully be picking up a box of tacs sometime soon, painting them up slowly when I've got free time.

Iron Knights are far from codex compliant in their heraldry, but I'd still like to do the red helmets for sergeants and white helmets for veterans like most chapters. What's a good red to do this with? Ideally it'd be something dark to fit in with the rest of the model's shade.

I used the spray primers w/paint on the left on this furnace thingy. I thought it gave it a nice dirty lok and came out pretty good, picture is shit.
After that I very sloppily hit the pipes with some paint and shaded the most of the furnace twice to make it filthier.

Only a month into painting but I wanted to get my terrain painted with some really basic base coat type stuff. Is this acceptable? I haven't been to a store since I was a kid so I don't know the standard of terrain detailing.

I mean i can always keep working on them in the future but is spraypainting them total pleb?

That's an issue of perceiption vs reality.
The reality is that there is not a single other wargame or company that can even afford to have the sheer numbers of different factions and kits for each faction as GW has.
There are ~20 factions.

Your perception is colored by Space Marines being the most popular.

Factually there are very little games that have as much variety as 40k. In practice you just don't get to see most other flavors.

I think you're taking 40k's variety for granted. To me, that's like knocking Tolkien for having stereotypical fantasy elements. While a lot of the variety the settings in question do have are kinda diminished due to their age and the fact so many settings that came after them took inspiration from them, you'd be remiss to say that either didn't have variety. I mean I get what you're saying, but marine armies aren't the only armies in 40k by a long shot. While almost undoubtedly the popular, other armies and races aren't an uncommon sight in the slightest, especially on /wip/. Hell, I think in every /40kg/ poll Imperial Guard are the most played, not marines.

Besides, even in terms of just marines variety is the name of the game when it comes to 40k. It's easily the most popular TTG with modular kits (X-Wing and Armada are by-and-large pre-assembled and pre-painted), meaning that there's probably more third party bits for converting 40k minis than pretty much any other wargame on the market right now. Add that in with the array of bitz found in each kit (and the fact that kits have been in production probably since before you were born) and you got variety in spades. It's just on the individual level rather than the army level. An army of marines might seem bland, but chances are, if you look close, each marine in the army is unique in-and-of himself. He might have some pouches the rest of his squad doesn't, a unique pose compared to the rest, maybe an old bit from an older kit, etc. If they all look the exact same then blame the hobbyist, don't blame the game.

I guess it comes down to personal opinion. I'd much rather prefer the individual uniqueness found in 40k to something like Infinity where an entire army looks unique, yeah, but each model itself is the same old model that everyone else because the kits they come in are nigh monopose.

Just my $0.02 on the subject.

My ebay order from denmark finally showed up

First time painting a tank in years

It was basecoated white when i got it

Added a few leftover parts from my chimera kit then started painting without basecoating them

Wip would have cringed to death if they saw how lazily i painted this fucker

Im planning on adding some more washes and then actually trying when i do a final layer to neaten up some of the parts/tank commander

Model to the right was a half finished renegade that i decided looked good enough and never finished

I just threw him in for fun

Anyone got any tips for painting big boys like tanks and whatnot?

The Cataphractii squad comes with Betrayal at Calth, and is now available in plastic by itself from GW. Unfortunately, the way the arms are made, you only get enough shoulder pauldrons to do one set of arms. If you can find the bitz on eBay, you're up for some conversion work to fit the to standard Terminator bodies.

with the white you're better off painting everything a light grey and work up to pure white for the highlights, as of right now it looks very flat

They're actually just basing models off 40k fan art. They're Russian so I don't think they give a fuck about copyright either way though.

Kill Team Cassius, or search eBay for Deathwatch Jetek 40k.

The scooby guy is from Hasslefree.
No idea where the other pieces are from.

Hasslefree has the entire gang as civilians and armed as zombie apocalypse survivors.

Van looks like a paper/cardboard kit. You can see the places where it's designed to be folded on the edges touching the roof.

I'm about to start painting an Ork Kommandos kill team for Shadow War, and I wanted to paint the Yoofs a slightly lighter shade of green to help differentiate them from Boyz on the table (and for lore reasons). What color (GW preferred, but I can get pretty much anything locally) should I mix into my normal progression and in what ratio to achieve a slightly lighter (but not grot-tier) skin tone?
>>
>>53138825
what I do for blending is a put my two colors (or three) on a wetpallete, from darkest to lightest, and mix some of the paint in between.
Then I slowly build up, having the paint pretty watered down (thinner then milk but not as thin as a wash). It takes some time, but I like the way it looks better than GW edge highlighting.
The reason I have it thinned more than usual, other than that I am applying multiple coats, is that it lets me also wetblend a bit.
When I do just a quick highlight like that, I find the trick is not to go slowly, but go with a bit of confidence and some speed.

I'll try it on some scrap. Thanks anon

I've found blending is easier then it seems, especially if you do it the slow way, because it allows for error, the trick is just going to be picking where you want your highlights.

>should I mix into my normal progression and in what ratio to achieve a slightly lighter (but not grot-tier) skin tone?
kind of begs the question how light you go with your grots.

Maybe this is gonna give you an idea.
One thing to consider is that the stripey kind of highlights you often see on orkd or goblin faces can add to the perception of age.

Or you can just paint boys and yoofs the same, but add another layer of dark green wash over the final stage of the boys.
That way you can even 'promote' the yoofs.
If that is a thing in shadows wars (don't know anything about it but the name)
>>
>>53140803
What you should do is paint the boyz and nobz way darker as opposed to painting the yoofs lighter. I think darker is easier.
