Have you considered using some thin strips of hobby tape for those stripes? Tamiya makes some great stuff and it really makes it ez to get nice straight lines with little effort.

Masking Tape, great when you want your Hazard Stripes to be nice and parallel.

There are also airbrush templates for such things, but if you're painting by hand, Masking Tape is great stuff (also great for airbrushing).

good lord do I know that feel. I have been stripping and repainting my miniatures and trying everything from world eaters to emperor's children to like 4 or 5 of my own custom warbands over the years. I finally settled on a happy medium by going with an obscure warband. so it's a change of pace from the usual marines everyone paints, but it's at least established so I don't have to design everything myself.

for nurgle you could go with The Cleaved, a funky looking nurgle warband that is mainstream enough lorewise to be one of the main factions listed in the 6e chaos dex, yet I've never actually seen anybody field The Cleaved IRL

The issue I'm running into is that within seconds of laying paint down om the palette, all the water in the paint plus any I add gets wicked away into the sponge. The pigment that's left over beads up, and trying to use it is basically drybrushing even from a full brush. Adding more water thina it out but that gets absorbed too.

I'm considering making a "counts as" faction for Necrons, but they are campy 70s-80s scifi fantasy. Any suggestions would be great.

Considering a Vampire from Space or a Space Wizard being the faction leader.
Zombie retro astronauts was an idea I had for basic troop choice.
>>
>>53097413
You'll probably want to check out the Crooked Dice and Hydra Miniatures ranges.
Crooked Dice has a game called 7TV themed around 70s tv shows. They have generic (moonraker style) henchmen for which they also offer helmet with skulls. So the undead astronaut thing would be quite easy to do.
Die Hard Miniatures had a sculpt like that as well, but I don't know if they sell their mini regularly or just do KS.

Anyway Hydra Miniatures has a range called Retro Ray Gun. You can probably guess what it is like.

Reaper has more cheesy b-movie style sci.fi minis than you'd think. Martians and robots, people with rocketpacks etc.

Another thing you could look into is Bombshell Miniatures. They also do retro sci-fi, they do more of a 60s Barbarella style though.

What would take this guy to the next level is if the gems were painted for real instead of just the lazy new GW stuff. Shortcuts like that are for painting multiple squads in one sitting, not for some HQ centerpiece guy.

Guardians of the Covenant anon from some posts above. All my marines have metallic armor but they have a lighter tone than those of the Iron Knights.

Iron Knights have an easy and similar scheme, you don't need great skills to make it look good.
Begin with black priming, preferably with spray, Leadbelcher base and Ironbreaker layers on top, and wash with generous Nuln Oil.

Highlight edges with Runefang Steel if you want a more detailed but obviously more demanding paintjob.
Otherwise applying a very light drybrush of Runefang Steel on metallic surfaces should do the trick to give them some nice contrast to the very dark armor you'lll end up with.

Use transfers on shoulders, drawing them is a real chore and requires a good deal of skill, time and tries.

As for the shields, I really can't recommend any bitz to use, except maybe those from Grey Knights or old Bretonnian knights, which you could find in bitz shops online.

Hope this works for you, Iron Knights is a badass chapter and I would love to see some anon working on it!

Most space marines boxes will have a transfer sheet corresponding to their type (infantry, vehicle..) which will have the shoulder transfers you need for the squad.
The problem si that Iron Knights are unorthodox in the fact that both their shoulderpads have squad icon designation, so effectively you'll need double transfers than usual. It's not a big problem tho, if you buy two boxes you'll have enough transfers for a 10 man tactical squad (20 transfers in total), a 5 man assault squad (10), a 5 man devastator squad (10), a 5 man veteran squad (10) and 10 command squad transfers. Each type of transfer is labelled in the transfer sheet, so don't worry.

It's a bummer tho, because older transfer sheets were bigger and cooler, and had more diverse designs and for different chapters too.
Nowadays you only get ultramarines chapter emblems on the standard transfer sheets. On the other hand, for infantry you only need the squad designation transfer, which luckily are universal.

For the crosses on the little shields, I don't think FW has any transfer sheet with them, and I very much doubt GW has them in their overpriced transfer sheets.
I suggest learning how to do them, and you can simply them greatly by just doing straight lines with T ends with white or silver paint. If they don't end up looking good I would suggest you don't strain too much on them, just leave the shields black and return to them once you feel confident enough to paint the crosses correctly.
>>
>>53100731
Maybe I'm just weird but I always buy razorbacks instead of rhinos. The price difference Is practically nonexistent and you can swap the tops to have either rhino or without even magnetizing them. The Razorback kit Is the same as the Rhinos, but you get a couple sprues of weapons for a couple more bucks.
>>
>>53101589
Thanks for the response. I might just do what >>53101309
suggested and do the chapter symbol on the shoulder pad. I know it doesn't match their scheme completely, but I'm willing to play around with it a little. I was going to designate company by kneepad instead. Disappointed to hear about how lacking the transfer sheets are. When I first started playing (4th ed I think) they had plenty of chapters on there.
>>
>>53101018
The "shield" there Is usually called a tilting (as in jousting) plate In the lore, fits the knight theme really well, and you wont have to worry about any javelins In your underarm armor seals. I know that terminator squads come with a few. You can probably buy them separately for cheap.
>>
>>53097248
If they're walking on a field of grass, then some appropriately colored flock should work fine. If you want them to be walking through knee or shin high grass then you will want to go for grass tufts, tho you will need a lot of them to cover whole bases.
>>
>>53101635
Yeah, they changed it with the new marine boxes, a real shame.
On another hand, forge world has the Imperial fist transfer sheet which contains a good deal of crosses and similar (Templar design), but which you could use on your dudes if you're not too picky.

https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-JP/Imperial-Fists-Transfer-Sheet

Making the crosses on the kneepad is an excellent idea. Given that one of the kneepads usually depicts the company the marine belongs to, having the other one representing the chapter could make for a unique design.

Have you thought some army structure/company you want to represent? They have different composition and functions depending on their number into the chapter. I usually recommend starting with this and making your paint designs, icons and characters with that in mind (if you are doing 8th company the captain should be kitted towards assault while 7th should be more dakkaish, for example). That's just my autistic ways of doing anyway.

Be sure to keep us informed!

I'd quite like to do a battleforce rather than a company, so probably a battle company with elements of the first and reserve companies for elites/fast attacks. I'm leaning towards 3rd company as I think the red kneepad/eyes look would be quite nice. I'm tempted to paint the bolters in the old school red way but I'm worried the model will be a bit too busy.

Red bolters are better painted with darker crimson tones, like Khorne red, as to not be too much bright.
You can try to do em but seeing as the Iron Knights favor the duality of black and steel/white, I maybe would keep them black-cased.

3rd company is always a solid choice, but 5th company really shares the color composition of your base design. Any way I see both of them fitting.

Kind of. I'm gonna go with swamp for the Tau in my closet that have been collecting dust for the better part of 10 years now. Same thing though. I want to fill them with water effects.

I did something similar like you though. Cut out the top from a GW base and then glued it onto .5mm plastic card. Cut the edges flush and sanded it so it looked nice and then I made a mold of it with something else (bases with room for the integral warlord bases).

I was a bit worried about getting good casts with such a thin floor. So I tried a few things and I managed to be able to cast the bases now without the need for even sanding them flat at the bottom after demolding.
I was kind of worried about that.

I cover the open mold with a piece of glass with a some baking paper sandwitched between.
That way the resin doesn't stick to the bases and the bottoms are perfectly flat.

Pretty chuffed. I've been meaning to do some sci-fi/Space Hulk bases, now I already know how to cast them when I finally get around to that.

Neat. I'm doing a batch of 10 by hand (plus two flyer bases, because I don't trust resin at that size), but then I'm gonna get around to casting it. Hopefully, the thickness will make sure casting works out. Did you have any trouble starting out with them?

I'm doing something like pic related (spoilered for mermaid breasts) for my restarted Dark Eldar; playing up the pirate theme, as well as the sky theme with a whole pile of Scourges, Reavers, and (now that a separate flyer slot exists) Razorwings, for a visual reference. I've been doing rocky bases for so many models, I wanted something different at this point.

I don't mind them. They're awesome models and you are doing a good job with your painting.
You were just fishing for compliments anyway, weren't you?

Have you considered doing some minor conversions on them?
I'd understand if you don't want to break such old models, but a few headswaps here and there could do wonders.
Just switch some helmet guys heads with ushanka guys' heads where thats possible. Or sculpt some fur flaps onto the helmets to make them look like an ushanka at least.

I was going to paint Krell today but instead I decided to greenstuff back on a tiny little piece of his ax that was missing. Now I have to wait until tomorrow to start painting him, because it needs to cure.

I've got a bunch of other Vampire Counts models that still need to be worked on, though. I've got third party fell bats, black knights, Vlad Von Carnstein, zombies, and crypt ghouls, plus some unassembled Isabella and Spirit Hosts models. What should I work on tonight? I feel like taking a little break from painting daemons and work on some of my own stuff.
>>
>>53103514
>Did you have any trouble starting out with them?
Yeah it took a few tries to get it right in terms of casting.

First thing I did was cast just with an open mold.
But I poured a little too much or a little less than necessary into each base a few times.
To little is easier to clean up on the full base, but left me with holes in the hollow one. Too much just won't sit right and you end up having to sand the resin down (something I'm not keen on since I'm essentially doing this in my bedroom).

Then I tried covering the mold with glass and that worked fine for about two pulls in terms of getting the bases off the glass afterwards. But I managed to trap bubbles in the bases while doing that.
Then I also ended up having to pull the bases from the glass with some tweezers, cause the resin started sticking to the glass even when I used mold release.

Anyway after a short bit of googling I found somebody mentioning baking paper.
Gave that a shot and to my surprise it works really well.

So here's how I do it now:
I make sure I have enough resin, a tiny bit of overflow is necessary for this. Then I fill the mold and carefully roll the baking paper onto the mold making sure I don't trap air. Way easier to do with paper than with glass.
Once that is done I carefully put the glass on top of that and press down in circular motions to remove the excess resin.

After about 15 minutes I can pull two perfect new bases from the mold that require virtually no cleanup.

The backing paper kind of saved my ass on this. I couldn't stand the bases with uneven bottoms.

here's brass scorpion over a white primer, with soft tone wash ( same as gw's flesh shade)

I would add red, purple, or green wash to it to nurgle it up, it's really up to your personal taste. see the faint red blotches on your original pic.

Water it down first and try it on the back of the mini first.

I lived for 5 months in a room like that, loved when it rained and the drops hit the glass, so fucking comfy
>>
>>53112074

Had problems like that. It's not just the wind, it's many factors. Duration of you spraying, quality of paint, humidity, time of day, etc...
Try to do short bursts of spraying, about 2-3, then adjusting the mini. Also wait for paint to dry, and also take a good look between bursts.
Sometimes you are already done and every next burst may be wasted paint and layers too thick.
Also sometimes this coverage is the best you want or can get, and it is enough.

Looking pretty good so far, especially the gold on the axe, I really like the sort of worn look its got going on.
I think that the transition on the abs and pecs could do with being a bit subtler, it jumps to orange a little too quickly.
The belt is a bit to similar to the skin at the moment, I'd consider making it stand out slightly more
Also the fire on the whip is the wrong way round, you should start with a bright colour and work backwards.
>>
>>53112285
It's the result of one to two burst of skull white from the top. Sometimes it's even and sometimes like this.

2 bursts isn't enough. Get more down, and wait between each 2-3 bursts from a different angle for the paint to dry a little bit.

Wanted to get those sweet sweet Emperor's Champion vibes.
Pretty happy with the result, had to cut of the sword arm as it wasn't making it completely vertical and replace with a more recent one.
I like that the crest goes on pretty well, however it's just poking a wee bit too much in the back so I fear the powerpack won't be perfectly glued to the back.

Thoughts?
>>
>>53114616
Just like the coats and boots they were always part of the initial design. You know the scary guy in some cheap horror motive who has antlers for some reason.
>>53114629
Slightly different areas in a combat zone.
Dangerous terrain of mecha tentacles
Street broken open by vegetations due to neglect
Sligthly damaged area inside some factory with cables spilling out (doesn't quite come across)
Normal river next to the streat
Area inside some factory
Newly destroyed street.

In order to portray the area in which they fight better I used bigger bases, got the okay from the organizer. All the other projects for the competition, that I've seen so far, used the gw styled bases.
Also after adding the coat the tau would have needed to go on 32mm instead anyway. 40mm now.

New painter here

Could you tell me what are the easiest ways to improve (besides obviously painting more of course)?

I just finished my first termagants and whole I like the general colors my highlighting sucks..

I would like to improve before going to the bug bugs, any advice?
>>
>>53115295
watch youtube videos on painting tips, it vastly improved my guys, watching them show you step by step shading and highlighting and such
>>
>>53115295
I've found that painting well usually comes down to not mainly practice, but the tools, techniques, and guides you use. Creativity only gets so far in this hobby and most of the time if you want to spice your model up to look better, you need to learn from a guide or video on how to do it. Then apply those rules from those guides to colors you think would work well together. Keeping your brushes and other tools in good condition helps too. Good lightning helps as well. Don't just watch the technique used in guides and videos, watch how the painter holds his hands stead and the flow of the stroke he uses.
>>
>>53115331

yeah, i watched many videos of blessed Duncan and generally get the idea of highlighting, BUT those thin lines along edges just look very weird when I do them (for example on the chitin on the termagant)
>>

Technically only the head is Mk4, since torso and pads are Curadh pattern, arms are mk7 and legs are mk3.
Good thing the Carcharodons do armor mismatch, it actually forced me to cure my armor autism, and it allows greater flexibility for conversions.
>>
>>53115371
watch apatheticfish doing the emperor's champion and how he does a gradient with a brush. It's pretty basic stuff but it's a good place to start learning how to blend.
>>
>>53115721
Curahd pattern? Thanks anon, i didnt know this was a thing. I always loved those type of shoulders
>>
>>53115983
>The standard pattern of Champion armour -- known informally as Curadh Pattern variant armour, after a title for heroes in ancient Terran -- is laid down in the Codex Astartes. Based loosely upon Mark VII Aquila Pattern battleplate, the Curadh Pattern variant comes with additional reinforcement upon the shoulder guards, designed both to display the many badges of honour a Company Champion is entitled to wear and to provide greater protection.

It's very quickly talked about in the Company Champion's dataslate.

Why thank you anon. You too can make such a model, with a fairly small bitzbox.

not him but it looks really thickly painted on. Like you've lost more details then the mageknight paintjobs actually covered.
I suppose with some washe and highlights they'll be a bit better.
I know you're probably not going for really high quality if you're just using them as DnD mooks, but those look like Chinese knockoff toys right now.
>>
>>53117585
they're the original mageknight paintjobs. I guess I will add them to my repaint pile

>they're the original mageknight paintjobs.
um, what. It's like they got a child in china to paint them.
>>
>>53117724
the quality variation of these is wild some of these are really decently done and others, not so much

Those shields are a lot closer to what I was looking for! I was going to use the ones from the normal marine Termies, but they're not as knightly without the cutaway corner. Thanks Anon, I'll try scouting for the bitz online.

I was able to fix the wing issue (a bit) and and I'm waiting for everything to fully dry before getting the nubs.

But the main reason I'm doing this is because I was able to get a good price half of a AOS starter pack and I thought it would be pretty easy to convert this thing using some bits I had around my house.
