So who decided that the prime variant for a 100 ton omnimech should have a damage capacity of 25? Seriously, even if you don't play battletech you should know that's way too anemic for its weight class.

Fed Suns?! Yeah that was our territory initially.

>>53025483
Is it because of the company engine that it doesn't have a lot of pod space? Even the targeting computer doesn't really offset the fact it has the long range weapons of something I would put as 60 tons.
>>
>>53025641
Nope, because the A variant mounts 2 HPPCs, a snub nose, and 2 ERMLs, with 8 DHS.
>>
>>53025641
The pod space is low anyway, and the Prime proceeds to mount a bunch of heavy pointless gear.
>>

All the stuff that premiered in Hotspots 3072 has new toy syndrome. Don't take it seriously and look to the Infernus and later variants.

I never really looked at it like this...

Please consider that comstar has had a clandestine anti-tech religious war against all other factions because "Hurr we should be the only ones with high tech, the others can't be trusted". And their whole monopoly on HPG comms because they sabotage, murder and destroy anyone who tries to research things on their own.

So its not just Zimbabwe. Its space Zimbabwe, the only people who know how to breed the special space pigeons (tm) that can transport messages all over the galaxy.

Also they had a fuckhuge cache of mint condition star league mechs + coolant suits.

So it is literally space pigeon breeding Zimbabwe in SPESS, with the best TEC-9 submachineguns while everyone else only has .38 revolvers. Literally an african milita in space. Add to it the religious fundamentalism and you get !Not-Jihadists in space doing everyones mail delivery. And of course everyone entrusts them not to just open the letters, read them, and reseal them.

I'm still amazed it took the inner sphere so long to get some real alternative means of data transfer. First mention i know is around 3048. Davion blackboxes, and then either Liao or Drac stole them and reverse engineered them.

>tl:dr: Comstar is literally space zimbabwe with space pigeons, religious anti tech raids and Admech-tier mysticism tech worship
>Pic related
>>
>>53026837
>First mention i know is around 3048. Davion blackboxes, and then either Liao or Drac stole them and reverse engineered them.

Dude, you need to go back and read the grogtech era stuff. Because Black Boxes are how Hanse got around the Comstar interdiction in the 4th Succession War.

Even that wasn't invented. It was old pre-HPG tech they found, and severely limited.

>And of course everyone entrusts them not to just open the letters, read them, and reseal them.
Not really. But their public neutrality was one of their defining characteristics before the schism. They were also the last vestige of the true Star League, and nobody wanted to wreck that up. In a setting where local comms are trashed with any invasion, it's nice to know the interstellar ones will still work.

Then there's the money issue. HPG comms are supremely profitable, but building a single new Class B station is more than 1/4 the cost of a new McKenna Warship. Class A is way more. There's just not the money to make a competing network on hundreds of worlds, even if you had the tech. Only the Star League had that kind of money and will to throw around.

Ironically, this is the main reason Comstar went bankrupt in the Dark Age. You blow the HPG cores on 900 worlds and even if you found a solution to Clarion Call, you're still fucked with replacing them all.

Does the Lao Hu have an upper arm and shoulder actuator, or does the I.S. LB-20-X take up the whole 12 crit slot for the arm?

Using nothing but Hellstars. But more generally, anything that can Alpha Strike forever gets boring. Having a heat dissipation capacity to handle a long-range system OR a short range one lets you pack more weapons into both roles, and forces you to make choices. Do you try to get closer to bring your short-range battery into play, or try to keep away to keep using your long-range firepower? Is your enemy fast enough in comparison to you to force you to use one or the other? Did you go too heavy on the long-range stuff, leaving you with a weakened short-range capacity, or is your long-range capacity only a token effort in return for a murderous up-close mauling?

Mecha Musume for the Hunchback. The paddle is her autocannon, which the kanji for the numbers bears out, though it's using an outdated version of the character for two (preceding the number ten that is the cross shape, it multiplies it to result in 20).

Would "PencilBro" (without the space) work better in the booru's search engine, or do you think it matters?

I recently uncovered a stash of fairly old artwork, including some from before the Dark Age of Technology, but none of it is really /btg/-related... except maybe for some sketches of the Patlabor cast.

If you have any artwork from Macross, Crusher Joe, MOSPEADA, Southern Cross and Dougram, it can be put it up on the booru. I left that option because of BT's original artwork coming from those franchises.

I'll agree to this. Going down wrecking Sue's Dragoons and finally killing Jaime was pretty awesome.

Can't have good guys in Grimderpess that is Jihad/Dark Ages, everyone needs to do warcrimes or be generally biggest aholes possible. The only reason that one knighly order, whose name escapes at the moment, has survived is because their planet is in the bumfuck nowhere in Periphery. But I am sure as soon as BT writers remember them they are getting warcrimed to death or do some horrible shit.

No. You're thinking of the broken one in Oriente. There are 3 working Theras.

The Wobbies have one (it's the thing that launched a ton of spectral fighters and blew the shit out of the Minnesota Tribe dig at the beginning of ISP3).

The Ravens have one (this was the Wobbies other stolen one that got captured)

The Regulans have one (This was what they used for orbital bombardment and fleet support all the way to Circinus. It was the cover for Final Reckoning)

Blazers are the HPPC replacement, and I can't remember what was the SNPPC one. Probably an ERLL.

>>53046812
That's part of why I liked it. Reminded me of a sorta combination of the ideas behind the -9M and -9Q Awesomes. The fluff fit the faction well, very brass tacks where it had to be and not even written as a sure thing. Plus while it seems to use the Marauder chasis for its basis visually it also reminds me of the Talos.

>Did anyone here contribute to it?
Yeah. I wrote a few of the entries and edited the rest, plus I did a bunch of playtesting with some of the crazier shit (notably the Diesel Thunderbolts and the Aurora).

The guy who did the record sheet automation program for us used to post here, but he developed a case of severe jimmie-rustling when CGL wouldn't acknowledge his genius. Then he moved on to Robotech Tactics and got banned from their forums too, and is now theoretically writing his own game but mostly being an ass-blasted little bitch on Facebook. It's a shame, because he's damned industrious, but the dude is a serious attention whore.

As far as the art side of the house, we got Alex/FD and Chris D./TGXarbala on board at various points. Both of them have also moved on from posting here, but they were recruited while they were still active 'channers.

>>53046787
Yeah, there were several designs where we swapped HPPCs out for Blazers. Not everything with a Snubbie got an ERLL - regular LLs worked better for some of the brawlers, and others got different swaps. The Culverin got completely re-written in the final hours of work because the original designer (the one who got fired for ripping off art) didn't pay attention to the correct layouts for the equipment per art.
>>
>>53047358
I really like the Diesel Thud. I find it funny how fans have a better feel for a faction than the official writers do.

Probably the stupid shit about how the Regulans lost the war because of the Seafox Blockade by a bunch of thinly distributed downgraded arcships and cargo vessels when the Regulans could have loaded up the Delos to full compliment, given her a PWS escort on top of that, and kicked ass from Tiber to Tapachula.

I hate so much how that all happened offscreen in TRO:3150. We seriously need a DA update. Why they don't do a Hotspots 3150 or fucking something is beyond me. It would be the perfect book to churn out while they're dicking around with ilClan. Hell, change ilClan to 3155 or 3160 and let's watch the Republic die properly before Homeworld Invasion 2.

How is it not a republic?
>>
>>53051322
No elected representation. The Exarc has total control, even more than the rulers of the Successor States because he doesn't have to answer to other smaller houses or warlords. He appoints the regional governors, names new paladins and knights, and so on. The Senate was purely an advisory forum with no power whatsoever, and Levin even disbanded that.

Why do you think the old planetary nobles got so fed up they started the massive civil war that caused Fortress to be raised in the first place?

In fact, the only functioning republic in the entire Inner Sphere is the Free Worlds League.

Yes, both. There was even a prototype mini of the Griff at PAX last year. Also, note the Beemer and Locust.

Right now we know of at least nine Shimseen minis being finished (Locust, Wasp, Valk, Shad, Ostscout, Beemer, Whammy, Griffin, MAD), but IWM is holding out on releasing the big ones until Catalyst can get the new boxed set out the door, to drive sales for it. Apparently the "Alpha Strike" box idea has been ditched ($5 says it was the Clan minis fucking things up again), and they're just pooping out another Intro Box since we're in the window for a new one anyway. My money is on them having at least a prototype for Gen Con this year to go with the Mech Manual and then getting the box on the streets ASAP. If Ben fucking Rome quit because they weren't paying him, I imagine that they're pretty damned hard-up for cash right now.

>It's pulling money and focus away from the Battletech board game, like Alpha strike does. Plus it'll bring Battletech to a lower common denominator, and I don't want those people playing my game.
How the shit is HBS pulling money away? The money came from Kickstarter and a rather copious personal investment from Jordan. Jordan "I'm never spending another red cent on the tabletop" Weissman, AKA the man responsible for Clickytech. CGL isn't putting money into it, and neither is anyone who'd be spending that money on IWM or CGL products.

As far as focus? Spellfire 2.5 and Randall's ADHD-addled attempts to make an RPG for every comic book and TV show he likes are far more destructive than a bit of Periphery-wank fanfic. And frankly if the fucktards are off writing their little blurbs for the characters in the video game, it's better than dealing with them writing shit of the same caliber for BT, would you not agree?

As a FWL fan, I'm gonna have to correct you there. The FWL has pretty much been in a constant state of "official emergency" for approximately forever, which means the emergency powers of the C-G makes it a heriditary military dictatorship which hasn't been able to liquidate that annoying bit of civilian governance.

Eh, the Parliament has still had major impact on events the whole time, to the point of forcing out Captain-Generals. The only reason the CG position is so tied to the Mariks is because Parliament insisted on it way back when, and Parliament did disband the FWL post-Jihad. And wooing and reshaping Parliament was a major factor in resurrecting the FWL, with Jessica aiming to make votes actually matter beyond the large state voting blocs.
>>
>>53051623
The laws passed, budgets and all the normal congressional business is still done by the FWL parliament. Captain-General is basically just president-for-life taken one step further. It's still very much a functioning republic.
>>
>>53051705
>>53051711
Hell, just look at how little control the CG has over troops. The FWL can't be a military dictatorship when the CG can't even use the military to conquer enemies, let alone keep people in line back home.

The League also isn't noted for its oppression or secret police or anything. ERveryone else has official state-sponsored terrorism agencies that are set up against their own people. SAFE only fights megacorps, who aren't really people, and Lyrans, ditto.

Then he spent a big chunk of another post bitching about CGL shitcanning and combining products that should have been full individuals because of lack of time/funding/correct management, and about feeling abandoned as ALD while Randall fucked off on something else but wouldn't let him make actual decisions or move things forward on his own.

>>

>>53059701
The speeders were originally civilian designs meant to tow cargo. The blasters and armor were added on by the rebels.

And I can fully believe ewoks are dangerous cong cannibals.
>>
>>53060116
>I always thought that was a Flea myself...not that there's a difference.

It is (notice the file name), but yeah, not much of a difference, huh?

I was never really fond of the other weird light mechs like the flea that seem to have strange combinations of weapons like small lasers and flamers that required them to get *closer* to the enemy where they were certain to meet their doom. I guess I just can't appreciate the "war crimes" aspect of them.
>>
>>53060300
It's more one of those collisions of fluff and the historical wargaming aspect of BT wit the crunch.

Logically speaking, small lightly armed and armored mechs make sense for anti infantry work since the intended target lacks heavy vehicular weapons, but the way the rules work means lightly armored shit will just get chewed up because armor doesn't prevent damage but just determines how much you can soak up.
>>
>>53060300
What you can't appreciate was that those flamers used to be able to instantly destroy a infantry platoon, elemental point, or schrek if the target didn't make a saving roll of 8 or better.

You change the rules and suddenly design ideas that banked on those rules seem dumb. Like the ones with stacks of Streak 2's from the early 90's.
>>
>>53061842
Flamers can still do 2/3 of those things, you just actually have to be using the rules for fires, which were always optional, but not off in a separate rulebook.
>>
>>53062318
Roll 4D6 for damage vs. Roll an 8 or better or you all die is a big difference.
>>
>>53062456
Yes, and the 8+ or die effect has always been the result of being in/traveling through a hex on fire, not simply being attacked by a flamer.
>>
>>53061842

Random question but if you can fit it and the age permits it, are RAC/5s just better than UAC/5s most of the time? They basically let you go full Dakka when shit hits the fan and can just be slightly shorter-ranged UACs most of the other time.
>>
>>53063723

>>
>>53063723
>Random question but if you can fit it and the age permits it, are RAC/5s just better than UAC/5s most of the time?
I'd say the two are too different to really compare on an even playing field. I'd prefer an RAC over a UAC in 99% of cases, but I'd prefer a fucking grilled cheese sandwich over a UAC/5 in 99% of cases.

Going from 7/14/21 to 5/10/15 means that the RAC is firmly midrange, so a lot better for brawling and worse for sniping.

I can make a guess/claim /help with the second part. Built for different things the Illustrious was modified very heavily to do what the Essex did out of the box. (Serve open water ie Pacific)
I think non US carriers weren't as good/cool but the rest were far from trash and built for different uses. They seem to get a bad wrap though.

>>53065568
That is a helpful summation. Thank you.

>>53065792
Gotcha.
>>
>>53066013
The Avalon was basically built to survive an engagement as a lone flagship and use screen launchers to stay fairly nuke proof. It's an excellent design against standard fleets when it has the proper support.

The Mjolnir is built to kill enemy warships. It's got speed, big guns, and a shit ton of advanced armor. She'll kill just about anything short of a Leviathan in just ship-to-ship.

Basically, the Avalon makes a beautiful core for a proper aero fleet and the Mjolnir is a giant hammer that beats down anything big enough for it to strike into submission.

Now load the AR-bays of the Avalon with Alamos and you might have a more interesting fight.

Disabled vet, mang. Dude can't do impact cardio (running and similar), and he's probably shortening the hell out of his life with the amount of painkillers he does take. Our venue in Cincy makes players stand, and he's usually taking two doses of perscription meds each time we have a game just to stay on his feet the whole time. I'd guess he's about 170-180 on a 5'8" frame, which is hardly chubster compared to the vast blimps of most battletech players.

All the regimental combat teams and the light combat teams.

The old material says they're the ones who were slated first for BA to replace the downright huge numbers of regular infantry that were a massive pain in the ass to transport. This continued up through the Fedcom Civil War and later. By the Dark Age, everyone has gone full combined arms so even mech units like the 1st BoG have BA and tanks attached at the company level.

If you search Battle Armor in FM:3145, you'll get more than one hit in every major formation.

What you won't find is pure Battle Armor units. These aren't clanners or 3050's dracs.

Regulans get the Ogre
Oriente gets the Leonidas
Marik-Stewart had the Xiphos but that production is now in Wolf hands.
Andurien just has to suck it up that they saved the space dragons instead of getting battle armor.

They got fucked with stuff like the Achileus and Phalanx because those production centers were places like Gibson that got glassed and Irian who had a ton of it's factories tractorteched by Stoners like Kalidasa.

The Achileus and Phalanx have been OOP for over fifty years by the time you're asking about it. They're still around in a few places like Oriente but very rare.

I still remember the lil shits that started playing bt after playing mw4 poor job FASA Interactive did introducing new MW/BT fans to the universe. "'Kay, so the scenario is in the War of 3039..." "COO DO I GET A MAD CAT?"

It is not understandable, you both are huge elitist cunts that are worse to play than the people you're complaining
>>
>>53075814

You say being elitist like it's a bad thing.

Face it, for every one good player the video games or an "easier" ruleset like Alpha Strike brings in, it brings in 10 players we're better off without. Becoming popular is the worst thing that can happen to a wargame, because that's how you get fanbases like W40Ks, Warmahordes, or X-wings. The best rulesets are always the ones with a small but dedicated groups of fans who are willing to put hurdles in the way of entry so that the shit players don't want to expend the effort coming over the hurdles. There's a middle ground between obscurity and popularity that the best wargames all occupy, and it's a damn public service to make sure Battletech stays in that middle ground where it can still at least pretend it's good.

>>
>>53080007

Well, there was the furry who tried to have his fursona inserted into the canon fluff, and when that didn't work he sued CGL for ownership of the IP with the intent to make the entire BT universe 100% furry. That may have something to do with it.
>>
>>53080007

A furry tried to gain control of battletech with a legal battle.

I am not even kidding.
>>
>>53080007

Roy Calbeck tried to sue Topps for ownership of the entire franchise. His reasoning was that a bunch of munchkiny fanwank he wrote for the ELH and submitted for sale to FASA was never published, but it was put on a fansite that in turn eventually became the official BT website, where it remained for a while after the transition to official status. As such, this makes the material itself official, and of course from there, using non-Euclidian moon logic, that meant he had a legal right to ownership of the entire BT franchise.

It would be largely laughable except that the general assumption is that his antics got the ELH largely destroyed in the Jihad as part of BT's general (albeit, well-justified) scorched-earth aversion to anything remotely regarding IP/ownership controversy.

So Field Manual: Update mentions two Nova Cat clusters from their Zeta Galaxy that took off with dropships and jumpships during the first Ghost Bear war and haven't been heard from since. Deserted, as it were. And from what I recall Zeta was made up of all the homeworld survivors from the abjurement and general malcontents unhappy with the Clan siding with the inner sphere.

I've asked on the OF, and as far as I can see the final fate of these clusters was never written.

What might be some fun campaign ideas for their fate? Adventures they might have, where they might go.
>>
>>53080468

While recharging their K-F drive in a planetless system, a Nova Cat Warrior disregarded protocols and flushed a vacuum toilet improperly, venting the JumpShip into space and killing all aboard. The personnel about the DropShips (the civilians and children) were shielded by bulkheads from the explosive decompression, but with no planets in the system and no FTL-capable ships left, they slowly and painfully died alone and unlamented in the emptiness between the stars. The children died last, extreme dehydration meaning they couldn't even cry as they curled one last time into the lifeless arms of their parents.

Enjoy your fluff.

The Republic cut off their own hands and feet with regard to most of their forces though thanks to the Stoners. They are supremely underdefended by design. Also, look at the numbers in the manuals. Dark Age also has less mechs than even the darkest days of grogtech. And the Republic is the smallest of those.

They did it in the sweet spot between the 2nd Succession War and the Jihad when nobody else really was. Or at least, just exceptions like the Screaming Eagles instead of a unit where it's their actual mandate. And also that they did it to people who deserved it, like the MoC.

But mostly it's their Zardoz-tier marching orders and reminding the Periphery that they are the Periphery, and can be fucked with impunity by even a three world proper Inner Sphere substate. Peripherats don't like that. You'd figure they'd quit pretending after one Shadow Division ran roughshod over a whole Periphery State, and a Regiment of angry mercenaries did the same thing to another.

Change Step 1 from:
>Check off one armor circle on the Armor Diagram in the location (or facing, if a torso location) for every point of damage it takes, until all damage is applied...

to

>Check off one armor circle on the Armor Diagram in the location (or facing, if a torso location) for every point of damage taken from an individual Damage Cluster, until all damage is applied...

The verbiage along the following path (Step 1>2>3>4) allows for a reading that implies that an LB20X hit which puts multiple pellets into the same location causes only a single critical hit (6 pellets went to the same location, so mark off the armor, if there's still damage left, you mark off 1 IS point for each point of damage remaining from the 6 original points; since it was just one hit to the location, roll a single critical hit in Step 4) . Basically, make it crystal clear you need to follow the flowchart for *each damage cluster*, not just for the overall weapon hit.

Otherwise, looks fine. (I am assuming Damage Clusters are defined somewhere. If you're using different terminology than Damage Clusters, change it to whatever it needs to be; I'm sure you get my gist).
