Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. I didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

>>
>>52919219
Explosive arrows are an easy one.

A Rope of Climbing with an arrow on it instead of a grappling hook could be cool.

Bow that has blades on the end that can be used in melee.

Arrow of silence is cool.

Arrow that casts heat metal on itself when fired. They have to rip it out to avoid being burnt.

Honestly you stick any spell on a single use arrow and give it to the Archer.
>>
>>52919020
That looks like a red slaad, which is in 5e
>>
>>52919462
Yes. The only thing you add it on top of for the normal stat block is AC and damage (for revised ranger). Then all of the things it applies to get a +1 when the ranger's proficiency bonus goes up.
>>
>>52919469
>Honestly you stick any spell on a single use arrow and give it to the Archer.

I want to make a hit-and-run melee rogue using the Scout archetype. Are there any other feats that increase move speed besides Mobile? Is Mobile worth taking even though it overlaps with one of Scout's class features, if only for the extra movement and the difficult terrain stuff?

is there something that is PF to 3.5 but for 5e?

Doesn't overlap at all, scout gives you reaction movement without opportunity attacks and Mobile lets you ignore them on your turn.

Also be either a Wood Elf or a Tabaxi.

>>
>>52919658
There are third-party systems based on 5e's core including Ultramodern5, Amethyst: Quintessence, and Adventures in Middle Earth. However, WotC is making sure not to rely too heavily on any single third-party writer for their own products, to avoid the mess with Paizo making PF.

If/when 5e is phased out, I'm sure there will be a third party that will rerelease it with the serial numbers filed off just like PF did. There was no such things for 4e because of its lack of SRD, but even the old AD&D and Basic stuff lived on through OSR.

So for the first time ever we had real PvP happen in a game for in character reasons. The two players agreed out of combat that they wouldn't be pissy if they died but luckily the Fighter/Barbarian is good aligned.

It was the Half-Orc Paladin arguing with the Human Fighter/Barb about how his tribe was past the point of redemption and they had to do something about it. They were on a bridge when the argument started and it was the single greatest cobat I've seen in a while.

Paladin won initiative and super smite the Fighter/Barb for nearly half of his health but missed his PAM attack. Fighter/Barb's turn came around and he raged and used one attack to disarm and the other to grapple.

Basically ended with the Paladin tapping out because the Fighter/Barb jumped off the bridge and could hold his breath much longer then the Paladin could. The paladin player also got a warning for breaking his oath and has been humbled greatly about combat skills.

I love when people win without weapons.

>>
>>52920596
If it's an attack, they cause a distraction, if it's healing someone they hold the medkit. Depends on the context.
>>
>>52920596
You do something context appropriate. If you can't come up with even a single thing helpful in context, you can't do it.
>>
>>52920596
Depends. If it's on Climbing it could be lifting them up or pulling them, Intimidation could be standing menacingly behind them, Persuasion could be nodding as they speak as it's a common trick used by politicians.

As for Attacks it's a fient, a whistle to draw attention or throwing a rock at them. Whatever you want.

>>
>>52919758
>Martial characters should get a magical weapon by higher levels
Even then, the PHB allows for characters to silver their weapons, allowing them to fight creatures that resist nonmagical damage. You should also put in that movement isn't an action anymore, a lot of 3.PF DMs seem to forget that.
>>
>>52920785
>silvering weapons

>>52920785

>>

>Even then, the PHB allows for characters to silver their weapons, allowing them to fight creatures that resist nonmagical damage.
Silver is good against devils and lycanthropes. Against golems and liches and tough creatures like the tarrasque, silvered is no more effective than mundane weapons.
>>
>>52919611
swift quiver and hellish rebuke give you among the highest turn by turn damage in the game

haste and counterspell are very powerful classics that are always good to have

what else makes sense depends on what your party is lacking
>>
>>52920623
>>52920640
My issue is that advantage seems a bit contrary to how helping someone works. When you help someone you both preform similar tasks that help to a same goal and having it simply cop out to it being advantage in all cases seems cheap.
>>52920645
I actually like this explanation for your provided examples, but my other problem still stands as this doesn't seem to fit into cooperative tasks, like say, kicking down a door. In that case you are both preforming a similar action (kicking down the door) and by the fact it should be easier for BOTH of you to do this. Advantage for the "main" person doing this seems contrary to how it would work.

>>
>>52920850
You get advantage when you have a favorable scenario. Helping someone is giving them a favorable scenario, right?
if you still don't like that justification, it's not hard to think of alternatives. Two or more players can roll and you take the average, maybe lowering the DC. In TYP, one of the adventures has a stone block that has room to be pushed by up to 4 people, and they can push it if their combined strength score is above 48 (I think, can't remember the exact number). Go ahead and use your imagination. Neither of those examples would work for helping with attacks, in my opinion.
>>
>>52920850
See the rules agree that unless you can realistically help then it won't work. For kicking down a door where you have the huge guy slamming it, probably won't be helped by the rogue kicking it..... but he can with a Portable Ram. Read the rules for that thing because it's one of the best pieces of Fighter-gyver gear and costs 4gp.

>>
>>52920919

Of course. Why wouldn't they? If a material is good as armor it's probably useful in some way as a weapon. For instance ironwood is a useful alternative against a rust monster, and adamantine works great for sundering. Mithril can let you dual wield easier (it's still a silly idea though).
>>
>>52920919
I don't remember if they're in the DMG as magic options or if they're in the PHB as a side-upgrade like silvered weapons. I am fairly certain however the Stat blocks of the creatures you mentioned say they are immune to bps from non-mithril weapons. It occurs to me that may be in reference to a since-removed rule since I don't have any MM errata.
>>
>>52920977

Planning a minicampaign where the players are illithids on board a nautiloid in deep space. The cloaking device malfunctioned and every faction capable of planar or space travel is attacking at once. The elder brain sends each mind flayer to a different section of the ship in order to eventually teleport the whole thing somewhere else.

In each vignette, one player controls the mind flayer and the rest control a group of its thralls. At the end of the scene it rotates, so everyone gets to control an illithid.

Subsystems of the ship so far (need more depending on how much time and how many players I have)
>Engines: Power up the reactor for a jump
>Hazard: The reactor core spins, spraying gamma rays in two rotating cones. Break line of sight when it comes around or take massive radiation damage (CON save for half)

>Hull: Go for a spacewalk and open up the exhaust ports manually so the ship isn't cooked by the jump
>Hazard: A massive space battle rages overhead. Periodic dragon strafing runs, debris impacts and other collateral damage randomly strike the hull, players have one turn to vacate the affected area before they hit

>Cloaking Device: Fix the stealth systems, so the attackers can't follow the ship
>Hazard: The malfunctioning cloaking device is distorting the area around it, randomly pulling in terrain and objects from other planes

Once everything is fixed, the ship jumps to a random region of unoccupied space, and the challenge is cleaning out the uninvited guests who came with it, culminating in a final battle on the bridge

Right now the part that's giving me trouble is designing the thralls. I want them all to be less powerful than the illthid they serve, while still being useful and fun to play. I still have to design all the encounters too, deadly enough to kill a couple expendable thralls while still being beatable. Tentatively I'm including a
>Gith Raiding Party (both kinds)
>Drow Commando Team
>Morkoth
>Beholder

In the MM helmed horror has damage resistance from nonmagical weapons that aren't adamantine. So there are adamantine weapons and my guess is they are substituted for magic if your running a low magic campaign.

As for Mithril I'd let someone get one and it'd work similar to finesse weapons and remove the heavy property. Although it's be expensive and not cheap by any means.

It did immediately. ToD's two books are considered the worst by a large margin.

Worst of the lot. tons of people say CoS and STK are the best but I wasn't a huge fan of them.

Going to have a game with the friends tomorrow but I have been busy all week and didn't have the time to actually make a lot of custom shit so I was going to just make a dungeon, throw some goblins and traps in it and give them some gold at the end.

The impression that I've gotten of role playing outside of /tg/ is that tons of people do it but they
>don't care about the rules
>don't care about the settings
>don't care about the game
It's just another way to hang out. I've seen people playing without dice. I've seen parties that don't have a single core race. I see people that the only reason they seem to play is so they can write fanfiction-type stuff about their characters. That may be the way the majority of games work, I dunno. I only know my games and the kind of stuff I see secondhand, or snippets of. People at wotc probably know better than I do what people are doing with their product, and they are probably going to do the thing that appeals to the majority (which probably isn't splatbooks)

HotDQ/RoT have balance issues and are frankly kind of weaksauce

OotA is solid but forces you to be underdark for most of the game. I'd say it has the most epic final scenes though.

CoS is a pastiche of a classic module and setting. It seems to do a good job of capturing the feel but most people feel that the final battle is anticlimatic because Strahd tends to go down like a bitch

PoA is probably the closest in feel to a classic dungeon crawl and it's obviously a play on ToEE but in general I feel like the villains are kind of meh.

SKT is fun but it leaves a fuckton for the DM to develop which can be good and it can be bad. Because it's a variable path AP a huge percentage of the page count will not be used in most playthroughs.

Normally, giving the players allies to offset a large number of enemies takes longer and produces the same result as just sending fewer enemies. Make the distract a number of enemies and fight "offscreen". Roll a few dice and get narrate the result when they reagroup.

>>52922091
Make sure the Scouts are using simple tactics and get through their turns fast.

Also one trick I've seen is to just have 1-3 scouts directly helping the party but say there are other ones protecting other sides of the outpost offscreen. Means you can run a smaller combat but there can still be a large amount of people fighting.

Also you could do Mass Combat Rules.
>>
>>52922070
the bag arguably has a larger surface area and/or volume, making it an easier target. you can get a scratch to you face and survive, you can get a clean bludgeoning hit to the head and survive with a concussion, but getting the bag damaged is instant annihilation with no chance of resurrection.

Thinking of playing a knowledge cleric, anyone have experience playing one? How was it?

Side question. If I play a character whose ideal is truth, and consequently will not tell a lie and seeks to expose lies, how could I reconcile that if I were to play in a party with say, a dickass lying thief?

My thought is to not out him unless it's a detriment to the party. But then scold him or give comical sighs whenever they try to pull a fast one on somebody after it's already happened. Maybe lecture him every now and then, especially if their lies get us into trouble.

This is just hypothetical. But I don't want playing a highly truthful character to ruin the fun for others. If I did I'd just play a paladin.

Thief is great as you have pretty great mobility, and can do a lot with your bonus action thanks to fast hands. Take a look at mundane items (non magical ones) as you can use all of them as a bonus action as a thief with fast hand.

Arcane trickster is also right up there in terms of fun.

Mastermind is fun if you're in it for the roleplay, in my opinion. One of my favorite characters I played was a mastermind that worshiped Beshaba because he was so confident in his plans succeeding that he new he didn't need good luck, but rather he needed to avoid bad luck. Because bad luck can ruin any plan.

>3 ASI, easy if you know what you are doing, but can get into tons of traps with feats

dunno, i wouldn't ever let a newbie start as a high level spellcaster, the whole point of the level progression is to introduce the player to increasingly complex mechanics and have their numbers progress with the challenge. it also invalidates a huge part of the game's balance and settings.
>>
>>52922523
So he should have had another character help him pick things and the DM should maybe be lenient and let them re-pick a few things after the first few sessions in case he turns out to hate them.

>>
>>52922512
But anon I don't want to play a trickery cleric.

Anyway. I might go with my idea. I don't need to be infallible as a cleric but I do need to follow my creed. If I held honesty to the highest esteem but circumstances landed me beside a liar whom I needed to get along with, I would try to convert him to my way of thinking. But wouldn't likely do so in a way that would ensure my death or his.

DMs also tend to enjoy having party lies exposed. So in the event they are I could have "I told you so" moments. Similarly, if a lie goes well he could have an "I told you so" moment right back. Might be fun dynamic.

If it does, it will be specify on the ability.

ie. Dragon's Breath Weapon

> The dragon exhales fire in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 21 Dexterity saving throw, taking 63 (18d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

or Fireball
> Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a dexterity saving throw. A target takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

versus something like Sacred flame
> The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d8 radiant damage.

Which does no damage on successful save.
>>
>>52922665

Conjuration wizards don't have to worry about this, but everyone else does. If you prep this spell, make sure you have dispel magic too so you can poof him away if he goes rogue.

Page 159 of the PHB says 10-50gp for a 1st - 2nd level spell. Not all that helpful, but you could extrapolate.

Resurrect always costs base 1000gp because of the diamond, and it's a 7th level spell.

Roughly 1250 - 1500gp? Or 1000gp and a favor to the church preforming the resurrection.

Adventurers League has a list of prices that follow these guidelines for costs:

Spell level * spell level * 10

Add on the cost of any expensive material components consumed by the spell, or 1/10th of expensive material components needed but not consumed.

So Resurrection would be (7 * 7 * 10) + 1000 or 1,490 gp.

Although... since it's such a high level spell, good luck finding anyone willing to cast it.

>>52923779
Since they could only cast a 7th once per day and only a big city would have a chance at having one cleric high level enough AND considering demand for that one spell a day the price should be at least 5k if you go on the list and over 10 or 15 if you want priority

>>
>>52919095
I did the same thing yesterday. Literally just wrote a shitty intro to a side quest and called it a day.
>>
>>52923919
I would also factor in that these clerics are not the same as player clerics. In exchange for giving up being adventurers and all around murder hobos, they've been able to just focus on mastering a select few spells to their fullest power. So maybe this cleric can cast Resurrection a few times and Raise Dead even more... But he can't do much else. He probably has no weapon or armor proficiency, his hp is like 8 and all stats other than wisdom are in the negatives.
>>
>>52923728
"One of your commoner retainers is replaced by a noble who serves as your squire"

The fact it specifically says commoner instead of just retainers heavily implies that retainers use the commoner statblock. Which would mean that swapping a commoner for a noble would change the statblock to a noble's stats. Which has Breastplate and a Rapier.

Now as for actually demanding your squire gives you his armour is appropriate... it would depend on what type of Knight you are.
>>
>>52924022
You are wrong. For example some milipedes can exude hydrogen cyanide gas which is not weather.

Mustard gas, not weather. Sarin gas, not weather.

Its really rather simple
>>
>>52924140
All of those things are atmospheric effects. For sure weather. Maybe unnatural, but still weather. That's like saying a druid casting "Control Weather" isn't weather because it has an outside influence.

You could utilize the 'Buying magic items' rules from the previous UA. Personally, a work week to find a person capable of casting the spell, 1000g for material cost and whatever the person casting asks for the effort, which could be 1d6 * 500 gp or so?

you can like, i don't know, use the solutions to your problem if they are easily available.

there's probably no good way to sort all spells that work for every class, without doing it like they do in the book. imagine you don't know what level a spell is, but have the name, (given by a feat, feature, scroll, etc.) and it is sorted like you say, you'd have to check every level and then every letter until you find the one you need, instead of just going directly to the name you have.

the book is actually pretty ok to get any spell's info, but horrible at telling you who gets access to any particular spell.

i'd rather have the spell block tell you what classes get it so you don't have to cross search between the class spell list and the spells themselves.

in the end computers are so much more efficient at displaying information, defending the book is dumb. i still buy them because i like the feel, smell, pictures and shit, but whenever i need to find something in specific, i just look it on the pdf.

Or, if the index wasn't dogshit, you could use it to find your spell when all you have is a name :3

Like, I understand what you're saying, that it's acting entitled that a $50 dollar book should be written to be read and processed easily by people who both want to reference it mid game, and pore over to get a better understanding of the game, but I think it's doable. It's frustrating to say "What are the level 5 spells like, what's that power level about?" and going between the list to the long descriptions back and forth. It's painful, because the 3e and PF books are like this, too.

As another point, it'd be super nice if in the spell description it said (wizard/sorcerer) and whatnot. I'm just saying, all of this could be formatted better. And the book has a bad habit of HATING to mention anything more than exactly once. They just don't like people that prefer paper, I think. It's easier to not care and bank on players just puting up with it.

Boats, my friend.

I gave my players a magic boat that the druid with the Sailor background could use by himself. The players love it, and just buys facilities they need for whatever training they want. I once handed my players a short sword of Faith, which pinged as cursed. It was a potent weapon, building all the way up to a +4, but made several changes in each step.

The first was to blind yourself. Merely blindfolding was enough. Have it a +1. The sword kept telling the wearer to do this.

Afterwards, it told them to remove their eyes. Blinding through other means was fine, but it had to be "permanent".

Now, the sword fot the ability to deafen the wearer until the end of combat. If you did this, you got a +3 weapon, and the penalties for blind fighting disappeared completely.

The final step was muting yourself. This granted a perfect awareness of all combatants (but not non-combatants), making it impossible to gain advantage on you from flanking, hiding, or similar scenarios, perfectly discern friend from foe, and ignore all or allies regarding your senses. You couldn't communicate, can't be communicated with, and gained automatic immunity to a lot of effects (charm, amongst others, including things like bardic inspiration and similar effects, positive and negative alike.) It was now a +4 short sword.

It has a had few other abilities, but it worked pretty well. It only really blinded the wearer, the rest of the senses were combat only. They figured out all of this through identify spell, and it wasn't until the Shadow Monk began questioning his ability to use Darkness to its full effect, that he decided to say fuck it, gouge out his own eyes, and then went all out on the short swords path.

Maybe dragonborn for the extra breath weapon.

But I think human is still the best. Skilled for skills, or healer for extra healing, magic initiate for a spell or even ritual caster for some rituals

Or tough to get the nobles HP to 15. Give him a shield and thats 15 hp and 19 AC at level 1 for a great early game meatshield

If he lies in front of you, just flat out say something, but in a nice way. Like, it's not nice to lie. Or Ohgma's frowning. Misunderstandings are your limit. And of course talk to the other players first.
