If Princess/Ladyknight pairings are so cliche, why are there few, if any, examples of them in popular fantasy media?
>>
>>52848986
who said it was cliche?
>>
Literally no one said they were so cliche except you just now
>>
>>52848986
Literally not a thing outside of your doodle-faced animes
>>
>>52848986
There's not many cause it's not a cliche, stop trying to invent weird debates
>>
>>52848986
>why are there few, if any, examples of them in popular fantasy media
They are so cliche because they are common in rabid fantasies of roleplayers, waifufags and made up green text stories.
>>
>>52848986
>If
Who are you asking?

Let's have another useless thread about nothing.
>>
>>52848986
Because when I hear the phrase 'princess/ladyknight pairing' I immediately assume it'll be the most magical of realms, and I'd assume a lot of writers, producers and directors would do the same.
I mean what does it bring to the table apart from looks?
>>
>>52848986
>If Princess/Ladyknight pairings are so cliche
They aren't?
>>
>>52849017
>>52848986
Also its in GoT with Sansa and Brienne, so its not exactly unheard of in pop culture.
>>
>>52848986
Is this just a roundabout way of fishing for recommendations?
>>
>>52848986
It's not a cliche. You and the person who told you that (if they exist) don't know what you're talking about.

I've just finished the manuscript for my first novel. It features Princess/Ladyknight

Twist: The Princess is FUCKING JACKED and uses a greatsword regularly, saves her ladyknight's life in the end.

Also it's got mecha and airships with tesla death rays.
>>
It's only cliche on /tg/, because neckbeards.
The only single solitary example of a noble having a homosexual relationship with their knight is Renly and Loras in aSoIaF/GoT and in aSoIaF, it was so subtle it had to be confirmed by the author later.
>>
>>52848986
>why are there cliches in the popular media?
>>
>>52848986
It's not common, it's just considered magical realm because most of the people that talk about it do so to get hard.
>>
>>52849203
only example that I can think of, that is.
>>
>>52849138
DM did one where the princess was a dragon and the knight was mostly an interpreter.
>>
>>52849134
Not necessarily, but there's a high chance of it. And as a concept, the fact that we both jumped to lesbians when sex isn't mentioned at all in the OP shows how something like this has a certain 'image' to it.
>>
>>52848986
Because they're stupid too.
>>
>>52849203
It's a simple subversion of a popular cliche, so it isn't an unfamiliar idea to anyone even if it never really comes up.

It's a lot hotter when eventually, one of them has to marry a guy, revealing how male power triumphs over the friendship between women with stark regularity, re-establishing traditional relationships.

It's like how in Japan, psuedo-lesbian feelings are a phase a girl grows out of, once she starts being attracted to guys.

Twin Princes.jpg

I've actually thought the opposite would be a neat story element. That is, a very strong bond between a male knight and a prince, in a completely platonic way, probably with the male knight sworn to protect the prince. Put big emphasis on the brotherly love that's common in a lot of ancient stories.

The best ancient example I can think of is Achilles and Patroklos, but it's a weird one because the "knight" in question is the weaker of the two, whereas the prince is a killing machine. The best contemporary example I can think of is with the Twin Princes in Dark Souls 3, and that one takes the brotherly love element very literally because they are, in fact, brothers. All the same, I really liked all of the details of Lorian being protective of his crippled brother, even going so far as to cripple himself to take some of the burden of the curse.
>>
>>52849521
A society that has normalized romantic love between men can never enjoy platonic broship again.
All will be subject to yaoi fan interpretation by most of the audience.
>>

>>52849649
Yeah. There's actually a bunch of examples I can think of from Japan, at least. I guess they've embraced that the fujoshis are gonna make all of the characters gay, anyways, so there's no reason to shy away from bro stuff.
>>
>>52849521
A better example, since Achilles & Patroklos were actually queer in the text, might be Lancelot & Arthur. Sure, Lance was banging the king's wife, but he also was deeply devoted to his king. Hell, a lot of Arthurian myth is full of this. Cai & Bedivere are the others that come to mind off the top of my head, though that's more in the Welsh tradition than the later stories, since the French romances sort of forget those two exist.
>>
I feel like it's a /tg/ cliche, and only a /tg/ cliche.
>>
>>52849916
A lot of romance stories had that as a dramatic element. After all, it was expected of a knight that their first "love" was to their liege. Tristan had the same deal where he was devoted to his lord but he was still shacking up with Isolde.

And I know that Achilles and Patroklos and all. But that's just how the Greeks say 'Hello'.
>>
>>52849138
I really don't like the sound of this.
>>
>>52849987
Same. I'm OK with a princess being combat capable, but being stupid buff compared to her own knight is ridiculous. Maybe if there were some context of a long line of inexplicably musclebound royalty, but that's an element of a comedy.

To be honest, this trope was fairly popular for a few years in the 80's among the more obscure fantasy authors. There has been a recent resurgence into the genre in the lesbian teen novelist categories.

Yeah really. I have actually played that sort of thing out several times.

Not exactly the same thing, but one of the ONLY fucking elements with Joffrey that had any nuance at all was the way The Hound was both minion and father surrogate to Joff. That sort of dynamic is as weird as the relationship his parents had.

They're not cliché. They can be interesting. Even with lesbian aspects.

The thing is, most het dudes I wouldn't trust with writing this kind of relationship well. I'd fear the "They're both GIRLS and it's HAWT" aspect would seep through too easily. Maybe disguised as "They're both GIRLS and it's CUTE" for the animefags.
The same way I wouldn't trust most het women with writing a convincing bromance between two guys.

It just seems to take a lot of effort to move away from what's hot from your point of view and get to what's a deep and interesting relationship. All the more regarding lesbian relationships, because lesbians are usually seen as a male fantasy, and are not expected to end as something serious.

But then again, writing good relationships is always difficult, whatever the components are. It's always tempting to jump up to whatever conclusion you've got in mind, instead of carefully building up things so the reader really feels implicated.

Lesbians are no more special a class of human beings than any other, and it is possible for a man to write a homosexual woman in a relationship without "making it sexy." And it can be sexy as well I suppose, nothing wrong with that.

And while lesbians in real life may be as boring as anyone else, in fiction they can be as attractive and lascivious as any other person.

>>52851290
I never said lesbians were magical or in any way special. You'll notice I mentioned bromances too; same thing.
But that's the thing. They're not special. Their relationships are going to have problems, and if it's their first homosexual relationship it's probably going to be extremely awkward. They're persons, and my point what that getting to the "juicy" parts before taking that into account is more tempting if lady on lady gets you going.
Nothing wrong with making them sexy either. But we're talking about writing relationships, and you've got to have the relationship before you get the sexy. If you even have to have the sexy. I'm having a hard time finding more than a few examples of deep, well-written female/female friendships.

In case you really don't know about halfhalding and think you're being memed on by all the guys posting old illustrations of it or something, swords are weighted so that the balance is very close to the handle so that they're very agile when held normally- you have a lot of leverage to put the blade exactly where you want. This has the side effect of meaning that when you hold them the other way, they are weighted almost exactly like a hammer. Meaning, if they have a crossguard, they ARE a hammer. You can really fuck someone up holding a sword like that, especially if you can actually hit an exposed area like that.

What's more, depending on how you hold it, you can hold even a razor sharp sword by the blade with no gauntlets fairly safely, and with gauntlets you'd have to pretty much fall hard on your own hand at just the wrong angle to actually cut yourself holding the sword by the blade and at that point you're more likely to accidentally sudoku.

You can also hold the handle and the middle of the blade for more control over where the tip of the sword goes, for instance into chinks in the opponent's armour around their armpits or neck (if they lack chainmail there).

Braid may be impractical but impractical long shit hanging off your head is far from ahistorical at least and is sometimes even part of the helmet itself. The bevor probably comes down to artstyle, like that picture of an anime girl putting in a normal sized contact lens even though her irises are 10x normal diameter- it's hard to reconcile the absurd proportions of an anime head with realistic and attractive looking armour. Same with the visor. The tassets are bad though, I can't come up with an excuse for those. The boobplate is not practical but it's not that egregious in this case and not of the sort (with cleavage) that actually represents a distinct disadvantage (guiding weapons to the heart and/or throat), its main problem in that case would be more metal used (and thus more weight).

The point is that it's something that could be made and wouldn't be (much of) a problem as long as it didn't have cleavage. I'm sure you could commission a blacksmith to hammer something like that out, and if lady knights had been more common irl boobplate probably would have been as well, because people are naturally vane. Which is the same reason codpieces tended to be oversized and erect, for a masculine equivalent.

That though the case may be, the answer is yes. I'm also not sure when japanophilia became such a huge thing, it wasn't like I was paying attention to the metanarrative of the internet at the time but I'm pretty sure in the 90s and early 00s it was more common both irl and online to be an anglophile. Regardless, there's people pretty much everywhere that idolise the culture of any other given place, and the most common places for the Japanese to idolise are France and Germany, especially their medieval culture. There's a shitload of it in manga, anime and game development- Even the most iconically Japanese JRPGs like Final Fantasy have strong western influences (western-style weaponry, western mythology), and then you have shit like Berserk, Monster Hunter and Dark Souls that are pretty much just 90% the creators jacking off to pictures of French and German knights fighting Greek monsters.

Isn't that ironic? The American, leftist, progressive media barely features homosexuals yet downright socially reactionary Japan shits out yuri and yaoi like there's no tomorrow. If you asked me why, I'd say that I'm no expert on Japanese culture but I think that its strict separation between private and public (tatemae-honne) is responsible for this. They're not exactly fond of homos, but if you want to watch two guys fiddle eachothers diddles they're not going to stop you. Meanwhile elevated American culture (media and academia) is so drenched in identity politics that everyone will always find something offensive one way or another. If an American movie features gay characters they have two options: either they rewrite Brokeback Mountain (because it's the one gay movie that really nobody is offended by) or they play these characters for laughs (but not too much because being called a homophobe can ruin your career). Ironically it's the progressive LGBTQ.Q community that prevents their own "fair representation" in media: directors and writers in the West rightfully don't want to touch that subject with a ten foot pole.

But that's just me speculating.
>>
>>52872165
>Japan shits out yuri and yaoi like there's no tomorrow

The yuri and yaoi being shat out is mostly by straight authors for straight readers.
It's OK because it's just wank material, to be enjoyed in private.

The more serious homo content by homos for homos by comparison is barely a fart, and doesn't get much exposure even among the straights consuming the wank material above.

It's mainly because back in the days (as in the 70s) you couldn't make female characters talk about sex in children's and YA media, so they used gay boys as stand-ins.

Yuri is just romantic fiction about "intimate friendship" beween girls. Some dude though being gay was a phase pretty much all kids go through and it stuck around as a genre.

Neither genre is actual homosexual fiction, heck, the shit actually originates FROM homoerotic 19th century boy's adventure stories and fetish pedo gay porn for males, both of which quoted wakashūdō-fiction stereotypes.

>>

>Wut? How does that even make sense?
It's like how you generally only see dicks through spandex in cape comics by artists who're fresh off the boat.
Publishers have common standards for what's permissionable in their publications and those standards used to be pretty strict in shoujo.

>Is this in America or Japan
Japan. Way back during the 70s, though the wall came down on the taboo during the last decade, from what I hear.
>And how does that justify gays being okay somehow, were the gays depicted as evil too?
Because it started out in scifi and other genre stories. You can get away with a lot of stuff as long as you properly alienate it from RL by having it be featured in genre stories. It's how BL in general works and why a lot of it is still really really really wierd.

Also, if you have time, make sure to thank Donald Trump and Pepe the Frog for finally helping 'alt-right' get the mainstream recognition that years of editorial pieces and academic papers failed to achieve, granting you the ultimate crutch to pre-empt people calling you a massive fucking faggot regardless of what you believe.

So how does that work? If only the one being penetrated is "gay", then how do they dictate who is the gay one and who the straight one when neither of them penetrates? Is it simply not gay to scissor? And can we assume that only the Roman, who appears to be a bottom, performs cunnilingus on the Greek and not the other way around? Are they still open to being approached to men? Or perhaps at this point they've gotten so alfa that they exclusively want men to be penetrated by them or orally please them?

Please explain their relationship within the context of Hellenistic Mediterranean sexual mores. I need this information for my thesis.

Judicial duels struggled mightily to ensure fairness and often required standardized kit, because apparently divine favor isn't enough to outweigh "actual combat fitness and experience" bias.

Two men of equal build but one's a man-at-arms? Give them both wonky shield-hook-spears so neither of them will know what the fuck they're doing.
A man and a woman? Bury the man chest-high to counter his size and strength.

So on and so forth until finally everyone had to admit trial by combat was not a quality system of justice.
