Mageknight and heroclix conversion anon here. Should I paint before rebasing them or after? does it not matter?
>>
>>52828437
Photos? Also, are you rebasing them to no longer be used as Heroclix?
>>
A few touch ups, some ink in the crevices and here's what it looks like. Can do a step by step if anyone is interested.
>>
>>52828437
also, best supply of cheap bases? I keep seeing hdf bases for very good prices, but are they any good to work with?

I'm going to be rebasing a lot of unpainted minis soon and I was looking to get something with a bit of weight to it. I see that some people use washers but I'm a bit spoiled with the 40k bases and that little lip at the top.

Would it be feasible to combine them? As in sticking a metal washer underneathe a 40k base? Or should I use something different to give it some weight?

what color is the skin going to be? That kind of ghoulish light grey/green?

If so there really isn't enough contrast. I can see the skin working out really cool if it more dramatic highlights and the armor was a bit more extremely highlighted as well.

Unless yer talkin' about an actual slottabase with a tab and everything, the sky is pretty much the limit. I used nickels (perfect fit for the old 25mm Citadel bases), but then later switched to washers and magnets on other models.
>>
>>52829704

Looking for advice on my WIP chaos lord. His schtick is going to be that his name is"Heretestical", a devotee of slaanesh.

Hey fellas, I posted last night about fluffing a Knight Titan army dedicated to Tzeentch. Not usually the kind of thing we discuss here, but there was one anon who posted some ideas I like:
>hereteks fucking aroun
>they cross Tzeentch
>Tzeentch takes the Knights as payment

So I'm thinking of going more tongue in cheek, and have each of them possessed by a different daemon of Tzeentch. Maybe a Lord of Change in the Warlord (a Lancer who's going to be all feathery and bird like), and have constant bickering while they do their master's missions.

I could also use modeling ideas. I was thinking one to look like he was possessed by a Horror, so lots of twisting flesh and color changing, one like a Screamer with eyeballs and little fins all over the place, one with a bunch of gaping mouths all over the place, and I need an idea for one more.

I've been working on a Chaos Militia force. I'm using parts of Fantasy Marauders, Catachans, and a host of pieces from my Cadian bitz box. I want them to look like they're men from a tribal Chaos planet that have been equipped by the Black Legion using scavenged, captured, or purchased arms in order to serve as their mortal army. This particular guy is all Catachan parts except for the helmet.

Thoughts?

Help me /tg/-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!

I'll soon start working on creating a unit of Chaos Ogres of Nurgle and could use some input on what apperance they should take.
I'm currently toying with the idea of converted my ogres to look like diseased cataphracts as I think that the tactical usage of Ogres on the battlefield would have a lot in common with the historical usage of cataphracts in the field. I also just absolutely adore the look of that kind of ludicrously armoured cavalry and think that it would look neat on a unit of giant gluttons armed with oversized greatweapona.
What do you guys think about this theme?
If you have any other theme-suggestions or tips please let me know as I have nothing set in stone yet.
The fluff behind my Ogre unit will be that they were an invading Ogre tribe that got beaten and absorbed by my Chaos army so I'm not worried about having them fit perfectly to my established theme of a Mercenary Company that've fallen to Chaos.

Not specifically Tzeentch aligned Eldar. And don't worry, you're not being harsh. But writing my own fluff is one of those secret guilty pleasures I have with this game. So many other oddities seem to occur in canon, why not add a few more?

The force is heavily psyker based (attached WIP shot of them). When that raid on the crone world went south, the Tzeentch demons that captured them realized their value and gave them a choice - work for their god, or get fed to Slaanesh.

You mentioned bases with lips on them. You a Warmachine guy?

Even before the Dark Age of Technology, Citadel made bases with a hollow underneath. As far back as the late 1980's, they came together in sprues of four for use with the RTB-01 beekees. Metal models with tabs between their feet were meant to fit on modified bases that had a slot built into the middle of them (hence "slottabase"). Early ones were square or hexagonal, but once Citadel really took off as the Purveyor of Fine Sci-fi Miniatures, they switched almost exclusively to round 25mm ones.

>Are these it?

No, those are 32mm bases. I painted the Honour Guard in >>52829704 over 15 years ago, when most infantry models still used 25mm bases across the board, and 32mm bases in 40K were unheard of.

More importantly, the plague drones kit is expensive as shit by itself, around 70% of the SC set, and drones are both one of the best Nurgle daemon units and the better choice for Daemon summoning as well. So even if you're not gonna use them yourself you'll easily be able to sell them off and get your plaguebearers for almost free. Though nurglings are sadly shit, so some of the value is wasted. Still, I'd say that the SC Nurgle Daemons is one of (if not The) best value of all SC boxes.
>>
>>52838406
The only thing I might do is buy 2 Start Collectings and then an additional box of Plaguebearers, but that's just because in Age of Sigmar there's a formation with 30 plaguebearers that makes them WAYYY more useful.

I wouldn't say that the nurglings are useless. They make for great scene-dressing and are too adorable to not use. Your nurgle champions need atleast one pet nurgling each.

>>

I'm during my baby steps in the hobby, painted my first 20~ zombies from BP using 5 base colors of some no name-acrylics.

I made my first investment and bought 20 vallejos from it's game color line + nuln oil sp I figured out it's a good point to ask for guidance..

Nr 1 is the first shading approach with just watered black + dish soap.

Nr 2 is the first use of nuln oil ever, still didn't get everywhere I wanted. Is it normal to put more than 1 layer? Should I just apply it into the hollows and avoid surfaces? I tried to clean highlighted areas with brush and it looked way better while wet.

Nr 3 is before washing to show just the paint job.

Any advices highly appreciated. I started with BP as I believe my low skills will be good enough for a board game (at least better than raw plastic), however afterwards I would like to try some malifaux minis so I would like to improve.
>>
>>52839423
Yeah I guess I get that. They fit better if you are going for a carnival theme.
But the old ones are cheeky bastards too. There was one with a wooden club with a nail through it. They were pretty hilarious if you actually looked at them close up.
>>
>>52839550
I dunno, I feel like old Nurgle sculpts left a lot to be desired.

The fluff clearly states that Nurglings are like overexcited children that really want to play with people and Beasts of Nurgle are like super loving puppies.

How loving and playful they are combined with how horrifying they look and how deadly they make the environment around them is what makes them appeal to me.

That's Papa Nurgle in general, though, the only higher power in 40k that gives a damn about his subjects.
>>
>>52839471
>Nr 1 is the first shading approach with just watered black + dish soap.
making your own washes is a good skill to have. Something went wrong here though. The detergent should have broken the surface tension, but it looks like there was air trapped in the crevice where his arm connects with his body.
Doing a black wash over everything is also kind of harsh, so the result on the white looks a bit grainy.
Try a medium brown or a grey on white next time and see how that works.
>Nr 2 is the first use of nuln oil ever, still didn't get everywhere I wanted. Is it normal to put more than 1 layer?
Yeah. Depends on what you are going for. Some people paint with washes exclusively. Just white primer and a bunch of washes until it looks passable. Quick method for mass painting.
>Should I just apply it into the hollows and avoid surfaces? I tried to clean highlighted areas with brush and it looked way better while wet.
Both ways to apply a wash work. Generally speaking there is no right or wrong when it comes to painting, really. If you apply the wash all over you still have to be careful to avoid pooling. You can usually more the wash around or take excess off with and empty brush if necessary.
>Nr 3 is before washing to show just the paint job.
Looks pretty clean.
Try a green or brown wash on the skin maybe, and a brown one on the shirt instead of black. That should give you somewhat softer color transitions.
It's tempting to use pure black but it rarely looks natural.
>>
>>52839550
>They were pretty hilarious if you actually looked at them close up
I don't see it. They just look like plague ridden daemons to me. Allthough I do love the fly-eyed one.
>>
/gunpla/ here asking...

Are there times when you recast with green stuff, that your dupes aren't very sturdy, and so the next time you recast, you insert wires as kind of an armature?

Or you use a combination of wires and styrene as a sort of underlying structure to sandwich into the epoxy as it goes into the mold?
>>
>>52839658
I dunno man. I think you take this too literally.
Nurgle is a sadist that delights in torturing his subjects with the worst plagues imaginable.
Same goes for his subjects.
Their 'affections' are perversions, because they are deadly by nature.

If you think any of the chaos gods is being a generally swell guy with no ulterior motives you missed a shitton of not very subtle subtext.

Anyway that is a fluff discussion so I guess it's best I leave it at that and not derail the thread.
>>
>>52838321
to be fair though, Nurglings and Plaguebearers are cheap.
>>
>>52839816
That may be true but the nurglings are still depicted as playful if not outright mischevious children.
In regard to your point it's true that Nurgle is basically the equivalent of an abusive partner who manages to brainwash his significant other, i.e followers, that he loves them and are kind to them.
>>
>>52839816
>ITT idiots who know absolutely fucking NOTHING

Nurgle does not take delight in torturing anything or any one, quite the opposite is true. Nurgle is known as Papa Nurgle because he's like an old grand father who loves his grandkids and sneaks them a toffee when their mother told them not until after dinner. His followers are in a constant state of celebration and it's like a circus. They dance through the streets, cheering, juggling and tumbling any where they can. They are incredibly happy to be blessed and are sharing that blessing with others so that they can also join the party and find the love of their favourite grandpa.

Nurgle is one of the few places you can find happiness in the Warhammer universe. Only new fags who don't read any of the fluff beyond SPASS MAREENS and Muh Horus Waz a Gud boy don't get this.
>>
>>52839929
With fear of going way offtopic do anyone have the official fluff-text that describes nurglings as capable of acting like the scandinavian tomte (farm gnome)? As in moving into a farm and causing general mischief to its human inhabitants if he doesn't get provided with food etc.
>>
>>52839943
He doesn't reservere his gifts to his devoted, and normal mortals don't delight in his diseases, so it's becomes a " of join us or drown in your won liquefying flesh" deal.

He's quite the Mengele type character, if you cooperate you'll get sweets, but you're going to have your spine fused to your dead twin either way.

So you're saying i need a wash for most of the main colors?
I really thought nuln oil is a miracle in the pot, but i need way more than just that.

Should i buy ready washes or make them from my paints every time? looks like a lot of cash or a lot of repetitions..

Done a bit more to Alarielle, I'm really enjoying working on her so far.
Trying to decide what colour to do the hair though, there's going to be loads of reds and oranges and white on the model so I'm thinking either really dark brown or black.
>>
>>52843515
I don't think there is enough brunette sounds cool. Why not go with that and maybe some white streaks like Rogue from X-men?

Also your work puts everyone else here to shame. Excellent job.
>>
>>52843499
Making your own is fine. I'm just saying shading with black is anything but subtle and if you do that all over the model it can blend the colors together or make it look a bit untidy. Especially if you got bright and dark shades next to each other that become apparent i think.

However as I said there isn't really a wrong way to paint. Just personal preference.
I just think you'd get better results if you'd use more than one wash and change it up a little.
>>
>>52843515
Blonde would work best. you already have the yellows going on and you can tie it all together as a low contrast piece

>>
>>52844706
Besides glue and a clipper to get em off the sprue and start assembling?

Best thing I can think of - wash your sprue with a bit of slightly soapy water before you clip and assemble. Most minis have some release agent on them to help get them off the mold cleanly and it'll make your paint chip off if it's not washed off.
>>
>>52844797
Well, I think they are included in the painting starter, so I should be fine on that. I'll remember to wash the sprues before assembling them though, thanks!
>>
>>52844830
No problem.
>>
>>52844797
Only resin and metal commonly have release agent on them. Plastics very rarely have them, like as in 1 or 2 people on the entire Internet reported it out of hundreds of thousands of customers.

You only need to wash plastic if it's from a very small company or you have filthy, greasy hands.

Oh, c'mon, Anon. Are you really trying?

On the positive side, you're thinning your paints and you've got, somewhat of, a grasp on highlighting Ork skin.

However, your skin highlight is super sloppy, your coat of pink is also spilling all over the place and lastly, if you have your heart set on a camouflage pattern then get some reference material or maybe watch some tutorials and practice a little.

Just take your time and apply yourself, Anon.

Did it occur to you guys that this was my first airbrush army and I was still learning the ropes of airbrushing? You don't pick up an airbrush and immediately become a 1000/10 top tier OSL beast. I didn't even know how to get paint into the damn thing properly when I started that army.

For the record every time I take that army out it garners a large amount of interest and compliments anyway. It's nice and table ready, even if the OSL is a bit overdone. Beats grey taushit.
>>
>>52849242
I bought a few of the other ones too, get good milage out of them. I'd avoid the wings though, they're impossible to get the small inner parts of the stencil out, makes them virtually unusable without many hours of very delicately removing them.

Numbers, Ork template, Hex, etc are all fine though.
>>
So you can order Fairy power spray off Amazon. Anyone know if this will still work for miniatures?
>>
>>52849435
All I'm saying is that it could be greatly, greatly improved by going back and painting the lightsources in a brighter green to fix the OSL. Other than that it looks good, it's based and it's a finished army which is still something that eludes me.
>>
>>52849435
I didn't mean to be an asshole. The scheme is really nice. Maybe put some brighter highlights on the light sources themselves. At the moment it looks kind of like a funky decorative pattern instead of osl.

Sad.

Everything glows green because I wanted it too, and to limit the pallete. The tip of the aerial glows because I decided it has a light on it, like an aircraft wing tip.

There are some brush details, but the point of the army was airbrush practice. I've done endless brush work.

Hey guys
I need advice.
I'm painting the carapace for my guys, and I wanted to smooth the colors a little and create some shadows or natural texture.
What do you suggest? I was thinking about a wash of either black, red or a mixture of the two, or maybe even of some kind of brown (earth shade or sephia).
I also may use a glaze, but I never used one and I don't want to screw it up.
Any advise is welcome!

(Reposted with scaled img)

>>52851463
I mean, not really. Virtually every post regarding the two pictures I posted were negative. Two separate stores I've taken those models to garnered a positive response. I have no illusions about my tau army it was designed to be a very quick paint job with minimal effort to practice airbrushing and get a fun list table ready.

I find the disconnect between tg and reality funny though, since this army relieves almost total salt in wip, and the opposite Irl.

Simple rule of thumb: use Nuln Oil on silver metals, Reikland Flesh Shade on gold metals, Agrax Earthshade on brass/bronze metals.

For other colors, use a darker version of the color you're applying if you just want a quick recess shade. Shades of colors opposite on the color wheel can be used to desaturate a model, and light applications of purple and red shades to skin are an easy way to make it look bruised/irritated.
