Fantasy settings where bits and pieces of ancient sci-fi tech dot the landscape and are hidden in obscure places. It's okay if the prophecy is badly interpreted. It's shit if it's a bad translation of an invented language the players can't even translate themselves. You make them commit "mistake" they can't prevent or predict.

Make tehe prophecy false or propaganda if you're gonna just gonna go all "nope, don't trust shit people tells you just because".
>>
>>52771979
Hero doesn't get stronger, he gets smarter and undergoes character development.
Villain doesn't get smarter, he gets stronger and refuses to change.
When next they meet, hero kicks the shit out of the villain. (Josuke v. BTD Kira, Jojo pt 4)

Character calls for aid against an apparently invincible enemy- and because he was actively involved in helping solve his allies' problems, the "invincible enemy" quickly gets its ass handed to it. (ME2, "nobody dies" ending)

>>52773817
Well, you can also have the prophecy being explicitly dubious, I think it's ok if you aren't planning to use it as a twist.
Or you do something like in HP: is the prophecy true or not? Well that other guy is acting on it so it still matters anyway.
>>
>>52773071
hah. Frankly for prophecies I like to start with something simple and straightforward, like an instruction manual for what to do when the magical death laser doom cannon starts malfunctioning. something simple like a straightforward instruction list of how to safely disable it and dispose of the resulting hazardous waste, and where the appropriate tools to do so are stockpiled.

So then ten or fifteen centuries pass. The empire falls. The next empire falls. The storehouses are looted or relocated. The instructions are translated through three languages, section four was eaten by kobolds, half the chapters on proper disposal were misfiled three centuries ago and no one living remembers they exist, and at some point someone decided that the text on the worst case scenarios for a failed shutdown was kind of dry and jazzed it up with all kinds of blood and thunder, and once again no one living knows how much of that is accurate and how much is just hyperbole.

And now the PCs have gotten a hold of it, and they need to seperate truth from historical BS, because some damn fool has dug up one of these old mana cannons and activated it without reading the instructions, and the PCs need to stop it before something catastrophically worse happens.
>>
>>52773895
>what does it mean, "asspull"?

When the writer just pulls something out of nowhere that magically solves the problem related to deus ex machina. Something like suddenly the hero reveals that he has been "holding back" and reveals some new move that came out of nowhere.

Reminds of a game I played in years ago, just after 3E had come out. PCs come across an Ogre in a cell. The Ogre was one of the BBEG'S mooks, but had been locked up for being unusually moral for an Ogre. PCs ask "If we free you, will you help us get out of this dungeon?" Ogre responds "OK" and proceeds to free himself by bashing down the door and going with the party. Ogre and halfling sorcerer become best Bros and get up to all kinds of shenanigans. Halfling is the brains, Ogre is the muscle.

an actual, legit main character fucking dies when they should. Good or bad guys. I just hate it when people run through hails of gun fire and live. I want just a little bit of realism.

If the author/DM wants them to live, they at least could have given them some common sense to act in such a way that promotes that.

I did it as a memory sequence so we could have it 1 on 1. That way it doesn't rely on everyone being free the same day and nobody else had to be involved in someone else's story. If you are putting it in a full session I would make sure it was related to the main story. Otherwise if the character could get away from the party sit down with them on an off night to do a one off session

They take a different approach than the protomen. They're comparable, but I wouldn't say either is an imitation of the other.

The Protomen wrote their story about centered around the main characters' struggle and the flawed nature of Man, in the form of a rock opera.

The Megas instead took each individual Robot Master and explored their motivations in song form, giving them just as much attention as the main characters (for the most part).

Depends on the version. IIRC, OG Anime Koji was a generic highschool protag who was given a giant robot to save the world. He didn't have any personal stake in the fight, he really could have just done nothing and continue living a normal life, but chose to fight because it is what he felt was the right thing to do.
I could be wrong on some points here, though. It's been a long ass time since I watched Mazinger Z.
If you were watching Shin Mazinger, I'd give it another shot. Shit gets real good in the latter episodes.

This.

I have planned something like this for the end of my campaign. I have slowly introduced an ancient eldricht abomination with time themed powers and portfolio that was exiled frome its her dimension a long time ago and just wants to go home.
The only way it she can achieve such task is by opening a portal consuming the life force of thousands of individuals.

But in the end, its her family on the other side will simply say "no" and refuse to let it her in, leaving it her stripped of any power it she had collected.

In reality, she isn't an abomination at alla, just like her family: these "time elementals" are just an élite of time travelling wizards who were humanoid once, but got distorted by the time warp. They still retain a humanoid form and mentality, and aren't fundamentally evil. They're kind of a bunch of assholes, though.

The Ringed City DLC hints that Patches is not just a recurring gag character, but in fact some kind of vital plot element. "Every age, it seems, is tainted by the greed of men." suggests that he has lived far longer than previously thought, and maybe even remembers ALL previous ages. He also says, "A fine dark soul, to you." To me it sounds like he's somehow above the pursuit of the dark soul, as though he knows some secret about it.

Hard to say. Maybe, probably? There are 25 volumes. Assuming you start reading from the point where Kishin was revived (vol 7), you'll have 19 volumes to read. If it takes you 1.5 hours to read a volume, you'll finish the manga in 28.5 hours. Approx.

Here's my headcanon on the DLC

Patches basically broke the code to what it means to be human. The entire series has been about people fighting against the inevitable and ultimately being unsuccessful. You can link the fire and choose for the next age to be Fire or Dark, but that age will is ultimately temporary; you can hold on to Humanity and purpose to avoid becoming crestfallen, but its only a matter of time before you eventually become Hollow. Some people tried to embrace this inevitable, but that didn't work either. The abyss left them very different from the original, hollow form of mankind, and they too would inevitably also be wiped away (see: Oolacile, Pus of Man, etc).

Patches, however, realized that fighting the inevitable and embracing the inevitable were both equally wrong: both went counter to the fate of the universe, either delaying or speeding its arrival. The truth is, to be Human and Born From the Dark is to go with the flow. It's to be "devoid of worldly wants." It's to let things be naturally, neither fighting against it nor speeding it up, until Fire and Chaos and the Abyss all fade away.
That last bit's important. Remember, the Pygmy found the Dark Soul in the First Flame, and the natural state of humanity is just as devoid of the Abyss as it is of Fire.

Patches never became a mindless hollow and never lost hope, because he never had any hope to lose. He was right, after all. Every age that ever was ended up being temporary, further proving his point. He lives as a perfect, original human right up until the end of the world, where he (presumably) faded away with everything else.

I should probably ask on different board, but are the two DLCs worth getting? Has the meta changed from 40/40 Straight Swords since?
>>
>>52790792
Personally yeah. Ringed City is amazing.

The PvP Meta now is Ultragreatswords but really most weapons are viable in PvE
>>
>>52790824

UGS? How'd that happen? Does tat mean that 40/40 got bumped off by strength builds?
>>
>>52790792
>but are the two DLCs worth getting?
Yes, though the first one is poor quality money-grab that taught me never to buy a Season Pass again. The second is pretty fucking neat.
>Has the meta changed from 40/40 Straight Swords since?
Now the meta is 40/40 straight swords, greatswords, and curved greatswords! Diversity, see!

The 2nd DLC made Faith a helluva lot more viable, so there's that.

>>52790854
The UGS in the DLC is just a noob stomper in 1v1, but it's a terrifying to face in ganks. The worst part is that it's a quality weapon and not a Str weapon.

You should take this discussion to /dsg/.
>>
>>52790921
The only reason to get the first one is to understand what's happening in the second and the Friede fight desu.

Sorcery is still "pew pew, I hope you forgot how to press the dodge button".

Miracles are now the top meta, with the introduction of Lightning Arrow and Projected Heal.

Pyromancies are... well the same as sorceries unless you play your pyromancer like a melee but with a heal spell. (Hey, we're in /tg/ so you'll understand if I say "gish", right?)

"Hexes" (aka Dark Sorceries) are still a far cry from the DS1 and 2 days. Not worth it.

This is, and will remain, the shittiest image. Great villains aren't the result of someone going "Surprise! You were the bad guy the whole time, and the villain was the good guy!" Great villains are the result of being great characters, in whatever way that is accomplished.
