Some of them have the potential to be but are stuck with SHS. Even their upgrades of classic designs suffer from this. The Panther, a design that could use DHS, is deprived of them for a while.

I believe they make a variant of the Hatamoto-chi, the -28T, that has DHS and is all around pretty good for the era.

Okay, I'm thinking of branching out to a new game and this seems kind of interesting.

Sell me on Battletech, /btg/.
>>
>>52676846

Elementals have always been 10+1, so no.

Bigger problems with it are the rules changes on Infernos and its shitty armour.
>>
>>52676889
Unbelievable amounts of customization to your liking. Like of both derp and silly history. Lots of time periods in which to play. Mechs and tanks as well as other military units evolve as technology increases. Great vidya as well. Pretty great community (here, only here.) Some silly inside jokes. A lot of great guys here that are helpful to newbies. Long history of awesome.
There are some problems, but it's been worth it for me since I started when I was a kid in the mid-80s.
>>
>>52676889
Do you like Giant Robots, dynastical fuckery from Dune, centuries of war, MASSIVE 80s HAIR and a relatively slow game? If so, this is a good game. Most people admit to not playing the game and following the fluff only, which is fine too.

Also, anons, I have too many customs, and editing the omnis to say their gear is now pod mounted is physically painful.
>>
>>52676896
>Elementals have always been 10+1, so no.
This has to be some faulty memory on my behalf, because I thought the original TRO when the Clans showed up had older battle armor sheets with only ten armor slots then the unit was out of action. Don't mind me.
>>
>>52676935
TRO 3050 does say they have 10 armor, but the rules are clear that it's 10 armor, then one point of meaty "internal structure" to kill them. They've always been able to survive an AC 10 or PPC hit.
>>
>>52676935
Nah man. Even in the BoK trilogy, Shin Yodama tags one in the face with a large laser and it just laughs him off. Toads were feared for a reason.

But then at least you had Citytech rules where a lance of Wasps loaded with infernos could mop some points up in double time.

You know, it's kinda funny how many things considered mediocre or shitty nowadays were pretty great generalist designs back in the day.
>>
>>52676989
>>52677012
Then it's my shoddy memory. I haven't done any Clan missions with elementals in a long ass time and just forgot and thought the rules changed at one time. My bad.
>>
>>52676889

Tons of customization, tons of options for units, plenty of cheeky history (in fluff and in what some players have done on the tabletop). Pretty solid community here on /tg/ (I do not advise the official forums or reddit for BT). If you're a fan of lots of options and a methodical, tactical game that still has room for silliness, BT might just be right up your alley. Also, giant robits errywhere.
>>
>>52677054
It's more inconsistency and a change of terminology. The BA record sheets in TRO 3050 had 11 boxes (numbered 0-10) but the rules said Elementals had 10 points of armor and a trooper was out of action when the armor was gone. BT Compendium rules state them as having 11 points of armor. It was later that they expressed things BA durability as armor+1.

>>

The option should be a default choice like ECM modes, but it should not always be engaged. Sometimes you need those things at zero heat even if the damage is less. Like on a Pixie. That thing runs hot enough as it is.

Pardon the quick sketches, but something like this?

Probably need to enlarge the lasers, the autocannon and the hatchet to make it look more like a heavily armed 45 tonner.
>>
My player are in need of a boss for their mercenary command. I was thinking of using a former Fed Suns or FWL battalion major as the basis of the character. If the major survived conflict between the FedCom civil war and end of the Jihad, what would their command skills and mech skills look like? Let's assume the game will be starting just before a heavily AU'd RotS becomes a huge thing (and maybe just ends of breaking down quickly, I admit I haven't decided that yet)
>>
>>52681199
That's actually pretty good; the Hatchetman was always slim, and the Axeman was always kinda stout for its size. The AC on the Hatchetman could stand to be a bit bigger, but not too much. You could also experiment with giving it a cowl much like the Hunchback has to give it a distinct look. Or, mount it just above the waist like an Atlas since traditionally it's located around the upper chest, and the change might make for an interesting profile without making it feel so similar to the Axeman.

In the original art, the AC/10 of the hatchetman is either on the shoulder or depressed into the right torso, chest level. Here's a resized version with some sort of cowl, though I'm going to have to redesign it several times to get it to look unique from alex' hunchie.

My goals with all these doodles/ re-imaginings is to make them as faithful to the original as possible, for maximum brownie points.
>>
>>52681520

It is but one would expect a large laser hit to incapacitate a BA trooper, if the warrior hadn't fought one yet. BT Small Lasers would leave an M1A1 Abrams a pool of molten metal and a large laser is nearly three times as powerful. Shooting a dude with one should cook him in his power armour can, but BT armour is magical and Elementals are pumped to gills on combat drugs to keep them fighting when injured or in pain.

Why.jpg
>>
>>52681568
Personally, I think that Hatchetman must have a wide range of movement of limbs in order to fight melee attacks.
Since the cowl of a large autocannon (like a hunchback) obstructs the visibility of the right side and melee attack, I propose to put an autocannon on the abdomen like Atlas or Orion.
>>
>>52684200
I like centered head better
>>
>>52684293
I originally went small so I could have 12 HS but instead I gave it an extra ton of armor to cover the left arm better. 12 would have been heat neutral for a frontal alpha strike on the run, this'll be +1 on the run instead. Oddly enough it's not showing the extra armor on the arm. Went 12 on the left and 7 on the right.

It might be obvious but I don't build mechs and when I do I normally just make a dumb concept design or refit something that exists already.

>>52684316
Here are a couple of alternatives. Ball-joints will enable the arms and legs to achieve the increased range of mobility required for a melee weapon wielding battlemech.

The rest of the weapon assembly would need to protrude from the backside or the side near the waist, otherwise the AC10 won't look menacing enough and will make the rest of the mech look much larger in comparison.
>>
>>52685308
I like option A the best.
Option D actually looks better to me, but it's a little too much like the Hunchback

Incidentally, I find it pretty good weird that there's never been a hatchet Hunchback, because of all mechs, the Hunchback makes nearly the most sense as a axe murderer
>>
>>52685308
>The rest of the weapon assembly would need to protrude from the backside
Sounds good, remember that the Hatchetman does share the rearward quick reload clip feature of the Enforcer, so a bit more to the rear could work well with that.
>>
>>52685308
D, or number 4 for me, hands down. The others don't have that possible range of motion for the cannon and doesn't look fierce enough.

On the side I noticed the shoulder joints stick out a bit compared to the 3025 original. It makes your design look less flimsy even though the old Hatchetman doesn't have a lot of armor. Yours looks more like a front line fighters.

In any case, I like it.

It is really wonderful design!
I think that the configuration of the second from the left (option B) is good.
If clip-type feeding mechanism like Boforce 40 mm protrudes on the back side, it will look like option B.

If you want "power" in the illustration seen from the front, how about depicting AC10 as a thick armor tube wrapping multiple barrels?

I could go with option C and mix it with D a bit. Cannon assembly at armpit level, barrel longer to show that it's an AC/10, and some form of integrated cowl assembly. The one on the D is rather heavy handedly copied from the hunchie.

Every time you score a hit against IS, roll for crit. While it's from a single attack, it's considered two hits. If it scored hits against both RT and LL, and both were down to IS, that's still two crit rolls, one against the RT, one against the LL.

Would /btg/ recommend Kurita or Steiner to a new player?

Kind of going off the big picture view of Space Japan and Space Germany. Interested in what pulls players to each one.
>>
>>52688716
Steiner is best faction, of course.
>>
>>52688716
Steiner is all heavies and assaults with incompetent commanders

Kurita is muh honorabru combat with heat curve designs past 3050
>>
>>52688716
Steiner. Getting to play with heavier mechs invariably in of great interest to newer players, and when they want to branch out into lighter designs, Steiner has them covered there too.
>>
>>52688716
Steiners got good light mechs and a lot of assaults.

Also the Blitzkrieg, because there aren't enough units that make double-tapping your UAC20 absolutely worth it every single time.
>>
To Roleplay in the battletech should I use a Time of War or another RPG system? Mind you, I have no interest in buying any of the miniatures at the time. I heard the rpg has no rules for mech combat so that is of a major concern to me (I don't want to have to buy a whole other game).
>>
>>52688937
If you don't want to use minis or learn the minis rules, you may not want to learn the BattleTech RPGs (A Time of War) since they use Classic BattleTech for mech combat.
>>
>>52688716
You play Steiner if you want mechs with:
-Gauss Rifles, AC20s.
-Hatchets
-High Armor.
-Slow Movement profiles.
There are exceptions to each rule, but those are generally what to expect.

You play Kurita if you want
-PPCs of all kinds
-Mechs with big engines - sometimes too big.
-C3 Networks
-IS Omnimechs
-Swords

Though the Single Heat Sinks is a dampener on the situation, it's mostly gone by 3060.

Also depends on the playstyle, too. Steiner tends to find a spot, make a firing line, and not move for the rest of the game, especially if artillery isn't being used. Kurita tends to be way more mobile, relying on the movement mods to survive.

Use Paper standies as proxies to try out the feel of each force before you go blowing the bank, though.
>>
>>52688716
Kurita takes a skilled person and/or a special kind of masochist to play. It's not something you recommend to a newbie at all.
>>
>>52688937
Pretty much that.

Most people who want to roleplay Battletech have already dipped into playing Battletech as a wargame, and so the RPG is treated as an expansion rather than a stand-alone.

A lot of folks like the 3rd edition RPG more, but I tend to like 2nd edition or aToW more, since they both adhere to the 2D6 mentality. The later the edition, the more support it will have for "Modern" era play, of course, because they wouldn't have known there would be TSEMPs in the game in 1992...
>>
>>52686462
This is what the C-D version would roughly look like.
>>
>>52688879
Played a game last night where I emptied the bins on a Blitzkrieg. It worked surprisingly well with a Barghest.

A is my favorite. B is most like the classic. C is probably the most acceptable way to mount the AC in terms of range of motion for the hatchet arm and serviceability. D is cool but does look too much like it was chopped out of a Hunchback.

I'd either prefer A or C, with the barrel on C being slightly longer; more like D's barrel. also maybe a shorter handle on the hatchet. Liking how it all looks though, however you decide to go.
>>
>>52688937

So, what my group does is use a voice chat system (and a chat channel dice roller) for the roleplaying stuff while using A Time of War rules, and then use MegaMek for the mech combat stuff. It's not bad; you don't have to buy either (AToW is in the mediafire dumps, and MM is free by nature), and you can keep things chugging along. So, if you're going to play in person, megamek and a laptop or two are always an option. Or, IIRC, there's some paper cutouts and tokens on the mediafire, so you could print those out and use those instead of buying minis.
>>
So is the leopard dropship capable of a v-landing? Regardless if it is, how do you execute a v-landing in megamek?
>>
>>52693421
All aerodyne DS lack VTOL capability, and can only do so in vacuum. All those Broadswords just hovering around for your pickup in MW2 were a lie.

Otherwise, vertical landings are done by descending to altitude 1, then clicking the V-land button.
>>
>>52694002
>>52693421
In Wolves on the Border they described mechs being dispatched from dropships (Leopards?) by jumping out the back and arresting their fall with jumpjets, that was pretty cool.

Just finished that book yesterday, whoever said it was really good was right.
>>
>>52694134
That's an assault/combat drop, and yes, the rules allow for it. For low-altitude they'll use jumpjets or jump packs to slow their decent. For sub-orbital, they'll have a heat shield cocoon to protect the unit from atmospheric friction and heat.

Thefts rarely happen at this place. Never heard of one happening the entire two years I've been gaming here.

Like, I left my entire $500 40k Imperial Guard army alone at the shop in the basement gaming area for an hour while I browsed shit upstairs. Nothing happened. Not a single model missing.

Whoever took it has the entire store pissed off. They think it may have been one of the people visiting from out of town.

I'm guessing that the minis were in the store? If so, that's even weirder. Imagine being a shopkeep and watching someone you don't know rifle through a bag in the retail area.
>>
>>52694804
>Fortunately CGL is trying to get another introductory box set in the mix with some updated sculptures.

I honestly don't believe it anymore. Unless there's another porch-tier dollar soak that we don't know about, they should have developed more than enough funds from the sale of the previous boxed sets to run another two.
>>
>>52694860
They were downstairs. I was literally the only one downstairs at the time (Thursdays and Tuesdays seem to be empty days in the gaming area and I had arrived an hour early to learn more rules from the shop owner).

Damn. Well, shit. I'd say it's normal to leave miniatures under a camera. Sorry to hear that, man. I'd ask if you could go through the footage yourself to make sure there aren't any shenanigans happening.
>>
>>52694904

This is CGL though.

Incompetence in all things.

I'd just as readily believe the owners are gouging money from the company and leaving it unable to function as I would them trying to get a manufacturer but shitting it up by going with the wrong one again.
>>
>>52694904
That's assuming it all went into a pot that sat around and did nothing rather than being used for any one of CGL's 50 other games. I highly doubt they have individual money pools for each game line, even if they have a general budget for each. It wouldn't make financial sense, because then your money is sitting around doing nothing.

Besides, they've said now that they're looking at doing some other kind of box set, so who knows what the hell is happening.
>>
>>52695003
I trust the shop owner. This is the guy who has a huge tub of the WizKids MechWarrior/Dark Age minis and sells them $1 a pop.

I was actually planning on asking if anyone could suggest anything to look for that scales decently with the IWM when it comes to vehicles and infantry. It's how I got my two Grey Death armor squads.
>>
>>52695030
>This is CGL though.
>Incompetence in all things.

Not everything. I enjoyed how they navigated the god-awful mess that was Dark Age.

>>52695082
>That's assuming it all went into a pot that sat around and did nothing rather than being used for any one of CGL's 50 other games. I highly doubt they have individual money pools for each game line, even if they have a general budget for each. It wouldn't make financial sense, because then your money is sitting around doing nothing.

CGL does not have 50 other games. The two games that have been pushed since the last boxed set run have been Battletech and Shadowrun. Unless SR bled a staggering amount of money, things should be better than they are.

You're right in that they wouldn't leave a stack of cash on the table doing nothing, but my point was simplified to get across the meaning: It seems CGL has lost a ton of money somewhere. Again. And again, it won't be because of poor sales.

>Besides, they've said now that they're looking at doing some other kind of box set, so who knows what the hell is happening.

That's the thing though, they've been saying that for so long that there's no way they've been actively working on it. If they were, it'd be here by now. Hell, we'd probably be on our second run. CGL is reaching talk to deliver ratios that rival Palladium, and that's with them throwing that ratio by talking about it as little as possible.
>>
>>52695110
All the wizkids infantry and battle armor stuff is the same scale IWM uses for regular battletech because IWM bumps them up a scale for detail. Barring the ones sculpted way too big, like I thing the Rifle infantry.

Vehicles and mechs are mostly a much larger scale. Some are too small to be properly the scale they were supposed to be like the Uziel, but not small enough for real proper battletech scale.
>>
>>52695238
Not him but it all seems pretty regular to me. Last box set was 2014. They release one every 2-3 years. That still puts us in the pocket. Add in that they're actually putting in new sculpts instead of just retooled 2007 plastics and I can see it being on the back end of the cycle.
>>
>>52695301
the time difference between having plates mastered for the 2007 run and the 2014 run and the ?2018? run should be identical, all things being equal
>>
>>52695238
They have BT, Shadowrun, Shadowrun Encounters, Leviathans, Cosmic Patrol, Valiant RPG, Valiant Deckbuilding, Vikings, Jarl, The Duke, Wrath of Dragons, Paiko, Bravest Warriors, Balance of Power, Hex-a-Gon, and Ergo. Yes, at least a couple of those are dead, but that's a shitton of games, if you're allergic to hard numbers; certainly enough to say "they probably spent it on something else".

Given how often people accuse CGL of being poor businessmen, I don't know why it's so hard to believe that maybe they spent it on something that didn't pan out (not to mention that no one here is in a position to know the prodit margin or production numbers on the box set to guarantee they made a ton of money on it in the first place). It's not exaclty unprecedented in any industry. For RPGs specifically, offhand I know West End Games went under despite their main RPG line (Star Wars) doing great; ventures elsewhere sucked up all their cash and broke them.
>>
>>52695341
You got the timing wrong though.

2007 (5th edition), 2009 (reprint), 2012 (25th anniversary), 2014 (current)
>>
>>52695372
I fucked up the order in the middle but you get the picture.
>>
>>52695372
i don't understand what you are saying

the difference between the 2014 and 2018 printing is the same difference between the 2012 and 2014. both require new plates. the 2007, 2009, and 2012 printings should have all used the same plates. so your point that new plates needing to be made is moot... empirically there is no link between plates used and time between box.
>>
>>52695475
Except they did make new plates between them. They changed manufactures and got a lot of flak from the fanbase for making new metal injection molds without updating the sculpts used at all. I know I was pissed.

>>
>>52695585

The plastic type change necessitated new plates. They were dumb not to update the sculpts and/or to insist on better-quality detail on the plates (and better-placed injection channels), but there WAS a good reason for getting new plates for the 25th Anniversary set. The original plastic was a complete cockup, and the 25A plastic was much, much better.

Gamers (especially gamers under 30) tend to work in some flavor of IT. ComStar is the Inner Sphere's IT department. WoB is the Inner Sphere's IT department after repeatedly getting shit on by customers and management and finally get to take revenge on the people who CLEARLY don't appreciate them.

It's gamers living vicariously through their factions. Nothing new under the sun.

Oh. Oh fuck. Oh christ I think you're right. I specialize in network connectivity and I main Comstar, and when I'm mad about something at work I almost always go for WOB stuff. I had a client try to implement a firmware update that took down a huge portion of their network (70-something devices), I came back from the first 10 hours of repair work on it yesterday evening and I decided to switch my planned game over to WOB on MM this weekend. I think that every time I've played WOB that I can remember, it's right after something goes terribly wrong at work.

Christ. I have to go rethink my life or something.

TFA was far, far better than the entirety of the EU. Every single bit of the EU should have been excised from human knowledge, up to and very definitely including the Thrawn novels and KOTOR. The only good Star Wars was Ep. 4 and 5, roughly the second halves of TFA and R1, about half (in parts) of ROTJ.

Every other piece of Star Wars media has been complete shit.

Both me. But challenge me on it and I'll show I'm a master of mspaint :)
>>
>>52708625

To be pretty honest, this.

The vast majority of the EU has been fanfic-tier power wank, as epitomized by the TIE Defender (which slaps on ALL THE GUNS because "it'll be cool") and by lightsabres suddenly being powered by magical RPG power-up crystals, which are so mundane that somebody (Corran Horn) can make a lightsabre crystal out of *paste* and it still works.

I'm rather forgiving of TFA specifically because as far as I'm concerned, TFA was Disney proving that they understand and can replicate the major thematic beats which make Star Wars movies passable. As the first line of the movie states, "This will *begin* to make things right." Begin. Then Rogue 1 proved that they can make an original story while still generally respecting what came before, and while the story wasn't strictly necessary and could have been described in a short paragraph during the ANH crawl text, it wasn't BADLY put together. It's nowhere near as terrible as even the best of the prequels.

TLJ will be Disney's chance to tell a genuinely original story using proven thematic beats (combining the lessons learned from R1 and TFA), and THIS will be the movie where they succeed or fail. Give them a chance to actually fuck everything up forever and ever before we proclaim to the heavens that Star Wars is ruined and nobody should ever like it.

I AM home. I'm watching hockey playoffs (mostly watching the Blue Jackets get hammered and a fight after the end whistle). You're right on the drunk thing, though. Fuck you, it's Friday night.

As for the EU vs TFA: there's a difference between TFA ripping off the plot once, and the EU doing it for 20 years straight. Especially when one of the interviews prior to the movie coming out said that they deliberately played it safe with the story and thematic beats.

If the TLJ starts ripping off the same stuff (or if it's even as close to derivative as TFA was), then yeah, as far as I'm concerned I'm done with the Disney movies. But I'm willing to give them a few films to get their eye in before I start whinging that they're terrible and should just give up and kill themselves.

TIE-D was part of the EU. Came about in the Tie Fighter video game and made it into supplmentary materials. It was relegated to Legends status with all of the other EU stuff when Disney took over. It was made canon not long ago by SW Rebels, I think.

In the context of what NEA's talking about, the EU as seen in the 1990s and early 2000s, the Tie Defender was very much part of the EU. It didn't appear in the films, radioplays, scripts, or film novels, and therefore it wasn't canon.

If you're going to criticize somebody, know what you're talking about. And also, a fighter with more guns than some ships 20 times its size is pretty mary sue tier. 4 lasers, 2 ion cannons, 2 missile launchers, a tractor beam projector, a mag pulse weapon, shields, hyperdrive, and engines second only to an A-wing on a ship with less internal volume than an X-wing is pretty fucking mary sue. It does everything better than ships that are specifically designed to do one specific thing. Imagine an 8/12/12 heat-neutral 100-ton Mech with TSM, 4 CLPLs, a Targeting computer, and max tonnage stealth armor. It's bullshit. The Tie-D is the same way.

If ya can't tell the difference between "EU" and "AU" then you really got some issues.

The TieD's from a video game made by Lucasarts, not from a novel. It's clearly AU material, but it didn't originate from the EU material.
