Which one is better for Wizard (with a Cleric dip, probably Tempest for channel divinity)

Hill Dwarf 12 14 12(+2) 14 13(+1) 8
High Elf 10 12(+12) 14 15(+1) 13 8

Hill Dwarf can wear Heavy armor and has more HP, and can perform some Cleric spell adequately with 14 WIS.

But Elf actually start with 16 INT.

I like most of the spells in this UA.
Say a rogue dipped into ranger and is able to cast Zephyr Strike. Could he apply Zephyr to himself, and then next turn make an attack and then dash as a bonus action and move 120ft?
>>
>>52525663
I feel like an Oni is far enough away from the flavor and stats of Tieflings that you would be better off fluffing something else like Half-Orc or Goliath.

Find Familiar takes an hour to cast. The wording isn't clear, but I don't think the target can cast the spell within the hour they have.

Does anyone have an oddly tanky player? I have one player who just can't help but want to tank, yet never plays Barbarian.
The first real campaign we had, he felt an actual sense of shame after a Barbarian joined our group and he (a fighter) didn't have the highest max hp.
Then he tried coming off as some kind of tank as an Eldritch knight (though it was a party of low hp magic-users), even though a cleric just about matched his hp. It's going to break his heart when a goblin Barbarian that's joining overtakes his hp next session.
Finally, just a week or two ago, we played a one off and I suggested he try out a full-caster. He said sure and went Bard. EXCEPT HE TOOK THE TOUGH FEAT JUST TO BE SURE HE HAD THE HIGHEST HEALTH. Of course he ended up getting surpassed by a Paladin in the group.
I just don't know why he wants to get smacked around so badly.

> Use marriage ceremony before the final battle and defeat BBEG with the power of love
>>
THEORY

Ravenloft is a region that's been whisked away by a Mythal, and the Dark Powers are immortal/undead/demi-god casters from the era of Netheril-tier wizards, and Straud was their dupe to complete a ritual that took Ravenloft into a demi-plane.

How does one bring it back? I was thinking of going Witcher on the Curse of Straud, and resurrecting Straud's brother, save Tatianna's current reincarnation, and void the components of the curse.

But I figured it would also be a good idea to kill Baba Lysaga just in case, and destroy the Vestiges in the Amber Temple, just to be extra sure.

>>
>>52526040

It's like poetry

Of course nothing prevents you from marrying multiple people so you whole party could be one big polyamorous fun house.

Alternatively you could power up the BBEG like Strahd by having him marry an NPC right before the final showdown.
>>
>>52526065
The spell
>>
>>52526077

Only 2 people can get married per ceremony, it says nothing about only being able to get married once or to one person with a second casting.
>>
>>52526036
Yeah didn't look good.

Some things it does have going for it is if you use Empowered Spell and Twined Spell the chance of it having at least one Bounce goes up and it would average more damage then a Chromatic Orb.

Also the Spell Bombardment ability for Wild Magic Sorcerers might interact with it in a weird way.

You can't expend a spell slot to cast it, therefore you can't hand it over.
Same with magic initiate.

You could multiclass for it, but that would be

You'd have to be an arcana cleric or theurgist wizard, and that's
>combining two UAs for broken effect
If you can even call arcana cleric a UA, anyway.

Nigga, the whole point of the buff is so that you have better saves against any potential diseases your partner might have,

Absolutely fine.

It's not swapping for wis/con/dex (the better stats), there's still the +1 int which has anti-synergy, the Oni idea really fits it and it's not like you can cast the few spells you get while raging anyway.

3 levels is still a dip in a way, such as a paladin dipping for shillelagh.

You can say similarish things about fighter, though cleric is particularly bad because it keeps spell progression somewhat similar.

A better system is that you get light armour and shields with one level, medium armour with two levels and heavy armour with three levels. Or, heck, medium and heavy armour at two levels if you're so inclined.
Sure, you can still set up a tempest with the 'do max lightning damage' ability or a fighter with action surge or a paladin's smites, but at least you're not saying 'Okay, in exchange for not knowing spells one level higher every other level, I'm going to get +10 AC'.

Would making Chaos Bolt scale with d8 really break anything as long as you put a cap on the bouncing equal to spellcasting modifier? I mean you can likely do 8d8 damage to 5 creatures while casting it in a 6th level slot then, which seems reasonable compared to shit like Fireball.

I started playing D&D a few months back. Since I was a noob surrounded by people who knew how to play I figured I would ask all my stupid questions to an NPC and have the DM answer them without breaking immersion. Since we were playing a pirate-easque campaign we were often couped up on a ship, so I asked all my questions to the same NPC whom I would inexplicably summon. I called him simply Old Man.

I invoked the name of Old Man so frequently that other PC's began to do so too. He became an established member of the crew, addressed by even other NPC ship officers. My character naturally got to know Old Man very well and I became the closest one to him. We were best friends.

Well, the DM must have gotten bored of our chumminess or perhaps thought my training wheels neededto come off. He designed to kill Old Man.

But he couldn't.

Every single time he tried to kill Old Man, he failed. He threw him headlong into evermore dangerous, stupid situations.

Jumping onto a boat made of fire, blowing up the helm, jumping off the stern to grab the rudder and manually guide it into the enemy fleet only to have it self destruct? He survived it. Twice.

Attacking an ice dragon by climbing to the top mast and throwing bombs at it while his body is still covered in third degree burns only to have your legs frozen and shattered? Yup, survived that, too.

The Dwarves in game made a statue to him.

Finally, the DM gave up. He couldn't kill Old Man, so he ascended him. It just so happened my character was a Cleric. I am now the First Mate of Old Man, blessed be his name.

I am currently working on the Book of Old Man and actively spreading his faith in the campaign. Blessings of Old Man upon you, friends.

True. My main gripe is that it's the first Sorcerer only spell and it's not that great. I'm not normally one to change spells at my table but I feel like this should be at least a classic spell the Sorcerer turns to.

To your "originality", I bring to bare my own unoriginality: “Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to." ― Jim Jarmusch

Circle of Twilight Druid ability: Grim Harvest. Add an extra 1d10 to any attack roll (amount you can add is the same as your Druid level cut in half)
Wizard: Magic Missile. Roll one attack roll of 1d4+1, all missiles auto-hit.

Level 19 Druid, Level 1 Wizard, cast Magic Missile as a high level spell slot and add in 9d10 Necrotic for every single bolt. A 7th Level Spell Slot would do this:

((1d4+1)+(9d10))*10

Minimum damage to a single target is 110 hitpoints, with highest possible damage to a single target being 950 damage. This is assuming you can't Tri-class, because if you can, you can dip into Fighter for Action Surge, which gives you the change to do this twice per turn.

The goddess embodies all that is good about the half-elves. Their spontaneity, their beauty, their creativity, their wanderlust and appreciation of wonderful things. She serves to bring the scattered half-elves together.

Half-elves seem to always be told that their natural instincts are wrong. Settle down. Conform. Do what you are told. "You are a fucking freak half-breed". So She unites them, an untapped resource of creativity and inner strength, and uses them to make Faerun a better place. A more beautiful place.

If you were a half elf, what god would you follow? Even silly halflings have an entire pantheon to pick from. The elven gods, some of them at least, may accept you, but only as step children. Evermeet is no home to you. The human kingdoms are no home to you. Shall you have your ears clipped and try to pass for humans, and watch as those you love and surround yourself with all die off? Or shall you go to Evereska and be spit at? Or shall you follow Lissandri, and simply be yourself?

Many races have gods with overlapping portfolios, I don't mind that. Lissandri simply embodies all that is best about half elves. Music, beauty, wanderlust, and a natural green thumb.

Friend wants to play a Bladelock for my campaign. Essentially she has gone 2 lvls into fighter and are gonna drop the rest into Warlock. She asked if we can customize her patron to help fight the character she had in mind for. Her idea is for it to be a Red or Gold Dragon and basically gives her abilities to be a melee combatant with some cool fire abilities. So far I decided to build up a spell list for this patron (without copying too much from the Fiend). Here is what I was able to put together for someone wanting to do fire damage and buff spells for melee.

lvl 1 Shield, Searing Smite
lvl 2 Enlarge/Reduce, Aganazzar's Scorcher
lvl 3 Haste, Fireball
lvl 4 Fireshield, Elemental Bane
lvl 5 Immolation, Conjure Elemental

Opinions? This is my first time as a DM trying to homebrew something this intense.

He could follow him, I guess. But I think many half-elves would hate the stuffy halls of a library. They are explorers and wanderers. They know who they are, they don't need books to tell them. The Crossroads Cathedral is a giant greenhouse where services are held among the splendors of nature. There are half-elf members of every other faith, but they don't have their own, as a people. Oghma concerns himself with gathering and preserving knowledge. Lissandri concerns herself with the half-elf people and their future on Faerun.

I mean, halflings could worship Mask, but Brandobaris has that certain little halfling touch that wins them over. It's the same here.

My character IS a Half-Elf. She follows Old Man. He encourages her to do whatever the hell she wants.

Yeah, Lissandri seems to bemost closely related to the Roman God Fufluns (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fufluns). Life, happiness, plant growth, etc. I think I also recall vaguely some Elvish deity from LotR lore being essentially the same thing, though I forget the name.

More broadly, she is a composite of many Gods. There are only so many points of a faith to focus on, after all. Here, look at this:

Yeah I guess. I was just expecting to get much further. These guys usually want to squeeze as much information out of enemies as they can, so they capture when possible. My bandit leader tried to use his flying snake to sneak away a message, which they shot down, and then he became desperate and jumped into a river, so it sort of became a part two of the encounter. I guess I just need to let them enjoy things and be patient myself hah. I've played for a while but this is my first time dming and I've definitely caught the bug. I want them to hurry up so they can see all the cool stuff I've planned for them.

1st - Command, Earth Tremor
2nd - Aganazzar’s Scorcher, Locate Object
3rd - Fireball, Melf's Minute Meteors
4th - Compulsion, Wall of Fire
5th - Cloudkill, Immolation

Thinking of sending my PC's consciousnesses back in time, into the bodies of characters living a generation or two in the past (basically; the thing that happened in Final Fantasy 8). They'd get the chance to witness certain events first hand, and possibly even change them.

They'd get new character sheets along with a change of race, class, and level, and even though it's only for a session or two, I'm afraid of the players being annoyed that I'm forcing them to play completely different characters to their own.

Is this a bad idea?

So trying to change the lvl 1 feature of the Ancient Dragon Patron homebrew so it fits more for a melee fighter for my player.

What I came up with was this
Dragons Rage: For 5 rounds you have advantage on all Str, Athletics, Intimidation checks. Your melee weapon damage die is doubled and you gain temp hp equal to your max. You lose this temp hp at the end of this ability and all opponents have advantage when attacking you. This ability can only be used once per day.

Too powerful? It seems like it to me.

Hello friends.

I picked up 5e recently to play with an old group of mine from high school. I remember them enjoying a horror-themed campaign and I'd like to try and re-live it. Only problem is they're a lot older now and it's getting hard to spook them. I've looked over a lot of the 3.5e material, but I was curious if anything relevant has come out since.

Are there any resources or websites that could help with a 5e horror campaign?

Sounds cool! Just realize if even a single thing changes that would even nudge one of the character's ancestors in the wrong way, or a different way, they will not be born. So make sure to have it be a looping timeline, where everything they've done was already established as the past, or have them go to alternate timelines if they change the past, because there would be different people born to their parents instead of them.

Best idea is to have them use their character sheets, but with aesthetic and inventory makeovers. Tie it in just like FF8 did, where the PCs consciousnesses "buff" the characters living in the past with all of their class levels. It all adds to the player's believability that they could then change events.

Seconding the adding of sanity. Use some decent low volume music as ambiance: Bloodborne ost is great. Ex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlQcKBUcgmA

Maybe have monsters that they catch a glimpse of moving into a room, but when they follow into the room there's nothing there and no secret doors. Things talk to them in their mind in indiscernible sounds broken with understandable words like "hunger", "flesh", "desire", etc. Stuff like that.

One of my players wants a Bloodbourne-style weapon that can transform between two weapons. Specifically, a rapier and a whip, so 1d8 piercing and 1d4 slashing with reach, both finesse. I'm trying to decide how to give this some mechanical benefit, since switching weapons the old-fashioned way is a free action anyway and just saying "yeah it counts as both" is lame.

If we're going purely by what the weapons do in Bloodbourne, maybe transforming the weapon could be a bonus action that transforms the weapon and then performs an extra attack, but gives incoming attacks advantage until the player's next turn, kind of like the barbarian's reckless attack. Extra attacks are extremely powerful, though... so maybe transforming just adds a small flat damage boost to a successful hit?

Any ideas appreciated

the bonus action attack is a good idea but potentially powerful (imagine a barbarian combining this with reckless attack). but if it doesn't seem like he's trying to metagame, just do it anyways. perhaps if he swaps weapons and makes an attack with both he gets a small bonus to AC until the start of his next turn? Well Swashbuckler if you want to be a charismatic kind of Treasure Hunter.

Thief for the more classic kind. Honestly they get the acrobatic bonuses, jumping, climbing, using items and the ADV on Stealth means you don't have to put Expertise in it and you'll still be good.

unless you're doing a really lethal game, any rules would slow down combat too much. if you really want to though, just give disadvantage when you want to target a specific limb and add specific effects when you hit there (no movement when hitting leg, disadvantage on attacks on limbs, auto crit on head/neck, etc.

The ability to make an attack represents the opportunity to potentially land an attack with some lethality, allowing for called shots would break the idea that a fight is constantly ongoing and looking for chances. >>
>>52529160
It's a bad idea.

How much HP does a limb have? What happens to a limb with 0 hp?

Does a limb have higher AC? Is it attacked with disadvantage?

What does damaging a creature normally do? Does the torso have HP?

Its just a lame idea and makes everything more complicated and take longer.

>>52528965
I don't want the player to get bonuses for using both attacks, it should be a trade-off. I was thinking that players could use it to pump out a little extra damage to finish off an enemy, but it's risky because it leaves them vulnerable. Giving them extra AC is even more incentive to spam transforming every single round.

I can definitely see Barbarian breaking this thing though, since it's basically a savage attack for free if they do transform.

>>52528969
We're just starting. I think the player in question is a first-level fighter but if possible I don't want it to be broken in the hands of any class

Obviously the weapon will cost substantially more gold than a rapier and a whip combined.

>>52528980
In that case, maybe just saying that it can be transformed as a free action is enough.

Still though, that's awfully boring, how often do you need to switch damage types in the middle of a fight anyway? Giving it some special function would be nice.

>>
>>52529345
I'd recommend have it work similar to what >>52529366 suggested. It's a rapier normally, but he can use his bonus action to turn it into whip form and make a second attack that gets no ability modifier just like in two-weapon fighting. His weapon is now in whip form. To change back to rapier he would do the same thing with this bonus action, except now it's the rapier attack that gets no ability modifier bonus to the atk/dmg rolls. Eventually you can let it be upgraded to +1/+2 etc as a magic weapon, which would be reminiscent of the upgrading system in bloodborne.

Evening, all. I'm posting here in the hopes that one of you has access to Tales of the Yawning Portal and can help me out.

In short, I just played Sunless Citadel at my FLGS in an Adventurer's League campaign, and my character ended up with the magic sword, Shatterspike.

Since 5e largely did away with sundering weapons and the DMG page about damaging items is woefully inadequate, I was hoping somebody could either post a PDF or simply quote to me what the module says about the weapon, especially since an NPC attempted to use it on my characters sword.

In short - how the fuck does sunder work in 5e? If it helps, the magic item certificate I got reads:

"You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage you make with this magic weapon. If it hits an object, the hit is automatically a critical hit, and it can deal bludgeoning or slashing damage to the object (your choice). Further, damage from nonmagical sources can't harm the weapon."

I love the first 3 levels.

It gives so much room for role-playing, letting the characters meet and get to know each other, and let the players get into character and figure out how they want to play it.

Skipping straight to the big plot leaves little time for that. Really is best to have those 2-3 sessions to hit level 3.

Besides, the Cleric spell list is super amazing, and pretty much everything my Bard has stolen has been from Paladins/Clerics in the first place.

Ceremony feels like something most casters should have, honestly. Bards are still fitting, druids definitely should have it as well, and even warlocks can be made a strong argument for. Binding two people together? How is that not fitting for a literal pact mage?
