Help me decide legion pls.

Im torn between DA, Ultramarines, IF, IW, DG, WE, AL or maybe even Sons of Horus but I'm unsure.

I have no fucking clue to be honest. I just want a legion without conflicting color schemes or anachronical units for a set color scheme

Shit didn't realize there was new bread. Asking >>52523164 again here I guess
>>
>>52522266
I do. I haven't played a game yet, it obviously varies based on what option you take. I'm taking option 1 chymeraie and am relying on blobs backed by medusae and Leviathan Dreadnaughts.
>>
>>52523296
Also playing option 1 Chymeriae with blob squads, though I'm using air support, a Scorpius, and a Cataphractii spearhead as the core of my force. That said, I experimented with option 2... but I can't justify Leadership 6.
>>
So after reviewing the crusade imperialis book, imperial militia definitely can't take a stormlord, they can't use the generic lord of war list from before.

So that leaves me with my only options for ogryns in an assault transport as: dark compliance, or an allied detachment. I could ally with solar auxilia, but auxilia lasrifles are considerably worse than militia grenadiers, because grenadiers get 3+ saves and S4 lasrifles.

So I guess I have to stick with dark compliance for my list so I can take a stormlord and shove ogryns in it. Not sure if I should just take the bare minimum space marine HQ so I can run it as militia + some marine vehicles, or if I should make more use of the marine component.
>>
>>52523457
>So that leaves me with my only options for ogryns in an assault transport as

>>
>>52523557

>>

>>
>>52523230
Battlescribe is retarded. Idk what they did to it, but it also way overcosts jetbikes for command squads, enough that I was able to leave it off of my HQ and was still 5 points over, according to them. Do the math yourself, check to see if anything else in your list is broken, then just have it on the app to view the list itself.

When adding a stormlord as a lord of war to a space marine force, do I use the Escalation stormlord or the Crusade Imperialis stormlord? It doesn't specify.

Escalation one is cheaper, Crusade Imperalis one has heavy bolters instead of stubbers, can get armored ceramite, and has explorator upgrade.

Tell them your pieces have very significant mold shift that is beyond repair, and attach a picture of it.

Assuming you don't prostrate yourself before a 2nd ed alter daily:

Top Tier:
Horus Rising, A Thousand Sons, The First Heretic, Prospero Burns

Good Tier:
False Gods, Galaxy in Flames, Flight of the Eisenstein, Fulgrim, Legion

Meh Tier: Mechanicum, the half of Fallen Angels set on Caliban, Nemesis

Heresy Tier: Descent of Angels, Battle for the Abyss, The half of Fallen Angels set in space

Try each story in the anthology, skip to the next if you hate the first several pages.
>>
>>52525155
I've had some pretty poorly casted FW stuff in the past, if you email them with photos they'll often send you a replacement.

Although if that's from a friendly chinaman you're shit out of luck

TS bro here, you have all my good vibes for your painting projects and for not just doing the gold almost everyone else is now TS are hot.

But if you want to be maximum fluffy white/silver/ivory trim is usually used for vets, with command ranks reversing it. However, that's just me saiyan, you obv don't have to do that etc etc.
Best of luck with your dudes.

>>52526192

To illustrate. And yes, I'm a bad painter, apologies. Admittedly these aren't finished (not that they'll get any better beyond the tidying up they need) and it's also a snap taken under a ceiling light, excuses etc. But posting to show that TS don't just have to be gold trim.
This is based on the armourial plate from Inferno and also a little bit of personal preference.

>No one still hasn't made a Perturabo version of this image regarding the Iron Cage
I'd do it myself but I'm too lazy.
>>
>>52526936

Perturabo didn't really plan anything besides forts and bulwarks (because thats all he really knows). If anything, he was probably expecting it to be his last siege ever and wanted to make the most of a gory ending - assuming Dorn didn't bomb the shit out of him.

But instead, Dorn turned Pert and his legion into a masturbatory aid. Pert got to be a daemon prince for his troubles, but what fun has he had really? Hes been playing with legos for 10k years, hoping for the day Abaddon makes good on his promise to get him back to Terra to siege Dorn's palace one more time for good ol' times sakes.

Dorn died happy, knowing the scions of his legion to be worthy, fighting in the service of the Emperor. But Pert? How could he possibly be pleased with being a bored daemon prince?

The Horus Heresy is based on the legend of King Arthur. Theres no need to pretend this story has to retain any hint of originality.
>>
>>52527387
Agreed. Which is why it's funny when people act faux-outraged about something in the setting being based on something, when the whole thing up to the parent 40K universe has been since it's inception a conglomeration of influences from existing material blended together to create something new.

>>52527506
Pretty much. One of the reasons why it's accessible and enjoyable.
Personally I like spotting where all the shit comes from. It's also worth remembering that while it's all technically intentional, half the time it's intentionally intentional. Folding other stuff into new stories is a thing. At the very least, it makes kids or whatever go and wiki Paradise Lost or Beowulf.

Of couse, it can go wrong. McNeil has got to the point where he explains his refs in case you're dense, and Kyme's version of the Odyssey was worse than what I imagine anyone here could plot out given the task.

I really liked the two DA books, can anyone explain what was wrong with them?

The worst part of Descent of Angels was when they left Caliban and that isn't even that bad. Fallen Angels was good too, some nice bolter porn and a not boring story, the only criticism I had was the Lion smearing his autism all over the place but that's to be expected.
>>
>>52530525
Why would it be okay to run them by themselves? Custodes can't take Land Raiders. If you make a legal army list then sure but I'm not letting you run LRs with Custodes just because you bought the models.

I think it's accurate. Scars was written in an episodic format and you can tell - it's a little disjointed. Path of Heaven is also a whole lot more emotional. The Feels takes it from Good Tier to God-Emperor Tier.

More detail. One aspect of detail is that you can't do undercuts at all in plastic, which is why studs on a curved surface look elongated and weird in that material (e.g. the Calth Mk IV).

Has anyone had much experience working with Tartaros armour, more specifically Deathshroud? I wanted to use them as the basis for 40k terminators but would standard 40k termie shoulder pads fit on Tartaros shoulders?

They should fit, worst case you have to sand the shoulder parts a bit. If the pads come separately from arms, that is. I haven't seen an unassembled Deathshroud kit.

>>

>>
>>52532504
Why do you think it is shitty? it basically boils down to 'no vehicle spam' or a bigger ZM game.

>>52532445
Centurion mode is pretty good if you can get people to agree to it because it is a fan made thing. Games are played with lots of terrain at about 2000 points, no tanks, other things are limited to 0 - 1. Emphasises troops usage and stuff.
>>
>>52523230
That's because it actually is 305, in the latest red book (the Age of Darkness Army List). Probably should've checked there first.
>>
>>52527496

We already have three. Talisman the Horus Heresy, Tallarn and Drop Assault.

>>
Sekhmet - Cataphractii or Tartaros armor?

Cataphractii have a 3++ and can pick levitation + whatever.

Tartaros only have a 4++ and can sweep, and can sacrifice a power for Fiery Form for a 3++ if needed.

In a GOTCK/Pride army they are (compulsive) troops, so I guess Cataphractii is more sensible?
>>
>>52532682

>>
>>52532645
>no vehicle spam
>can take as many dreadnoughts as you want
>can take a leviathan (which is totally less game breaking than the utter WAAC bullshit that is the rhino APC)
Yeah, nah, it was just thrown together by some cunt who likes dreds but doesn't like vehicles, so he thought he'd make a ruleset that bans those army builds he doesn't want to play. It does nothing to promote infantry-heavy armies like it claims, in fact it makes them less viable because they're more vulnerable to quad mortars (which Centurion also allows).
>>
>>52532967
Centurion is supposed to be a casual way of playing taht harkens back to 2nd Ed. If your first thought is to bring 9 quad mortars to a Centurion game, you have the wrong mindset
>>
>>52533011
>there were no tanks whatsoever in 2nd
Sure m80, centurion totally represents that edition.

And why would we need a separate ruleset if we're going to apply "bring the right mindset" as well? You can do that with the current AOD rules; indeed, many do.
>>
>>52527496
What was wrong with Tallarn Ironclad? A vanus assassin fighting Alpha Legion infiltrators is great fun. Plus that Son of Horus emissary pilot guy was a great character.
>>
>>52533062
Anon, tanks were very rare in 2e because they were very expensive and very vulnerable. They were weapon platforms, not mbts, especially for space marines where a group of devastators easily could put out the same dakka while being cheaper AND more survivable in most cases.
As previous anon said, you do not have the mindset for the game, because you are still intent on gaming/cheesing the system.
>>
>>52532967
What's wrong with Rhino?
>>
>>52527496
How pleb I am for liking the likes of Descent of Angels, Battle for the Abyss and The Outcast Dead?
>>
>>52533150
No you stupid twat, I'm not saying I would cheese the system if I played it, I'm pointing out how it can still be cheesed even with Centurion's "fixes". Because if a ruleset allows it, somebody will do it. If Centurion doesn't prevent my fluffy infantry-heavy army getting blown off the board by phosphex spam, then what's the point of playing Centurion over normal 30k?

And tanks being rare is not the same as banning all tanks from the game. A 100% ban skews army lists away from "fluffy" forces (marine armies generally bring some tanks in the fluff) just as badly as any WAAC build.

Centurion is shit, it doesn't fix the problems in the game that it claims to, and you can play 30k with the right "mindset" without using Centurion. Kindly stop promoting it.
>>
>>52529915
Mainly because it reads like a first draft handed in up against the print deadline, and instead of pushing it back to fix it, they just said fuck it and published it
>>
>>52530948
Both these books are actually a bit better than most rate them. Descent especially, but it's still largely complete nonsense. Next time you read it, remind yourself the guy narrating it to you is variously between like, 7 and 14 years old as the book goes on and all that stuff happens.
And of course, the structure of it is complete dogshit.
>some nice bolter porn
So, i know we're talking about tie-in books to GW wargaming, but bolter porn is still bolter porn, and therefore utterly worthless. There is a difference between a good, purposeful action scene that contributes to the plot and 'oh I can fit a scene were dudes shoot at each other here I guess'.
The bits on Caliban had story and character, the bits on generic forgeworld were just excuses for there to be standard combat in the book.
There's also some cringeworthy errors in the book that indicate the author was clearly not giving a fuck.

The rumour on Retribution release weekend was that only the Fallen will get special units. Grav Raider could've been a thing but I don't think it's happening because Custodes didn't get it either. The Luna wolves are soldiers behaving properly like wolves. SpaceWolves are men trying to literally be wolves.

One is soldiering like a wolf pack where competence, aggression, competitiveness, responsibility, and trust are more important than formality, rank, ritual, or title.

The other is behaving like animals, sniffing the air, feeling the blood lust, and trying to pass it off as soldiering. Leman helped attach a warrior ethos and standards to them, but there's a difference between a soldier and a warrior.

The thing I find funny with the Luna Wolves is that even though they are soldier, they do tread heavily into the warrior territory in terms of the individual.

The space wolves are as you described them, a roaming pack of wolves made to look like soldiers

I agree with this. Most special forces units in the world behave more or less like wolf packs, not in the animalistic sense, but rather in the pecking order, trust, capability, intuitive relationship sense. When it comes down to it, they'd rather fight a little dirty to win because you're reputation is only as good as your last mission. If you can't keep up, there's always someone willing and able to fill your shoes.

I think the luna wolves, out of all legions, embody the ethos and culture that most modern special forces units have today. Deep down in them all, there's a killer who wants to win, and who also wants something more.

A topic that's sometimes explored is the idea that astartes, having been inducted as young boys and then known only warfare for the rest of their lives, are in some ways quite intellectually/emotionally stunted compared to normal adult humans. I think in False Gods McNeil was playing with this idea a bit, but as a result a lot of the decisions the main characters were making just seemed stupid. I don't think the 2nd book in the series was the right time for that sort of thing, basically, they should have concentrated on laying some solid foundations with the core story.

Oh, and marines talking about their choler and humours all the fucking time. That got old fast.
>>
>>52536884
>Special Forces
I feel likes that's always been sort of what they seem like in a way, a bit more Marine-ish

But something that I always felt with them is that aside from Horus, Abbadon and select other captains, rank doesn't seem that important to them, the person I charge is simply who is most appropriate for the fight.

I like how they have such a loose structure, they're not all that rigid logistically speaking. Company as the largest subsection in the legion, each company molded into their preferred method of warfare on their own initiative, mixing which companies fit the bill for each mission

Yet each one knows how to fight to their maximum efficiency to achieve victory, fighting dirty to drive home that victory

Prospero ALWAYS happened before Isstvan.
Even one of McNEIL'S OWN BOOKS that came out before The Outcast Dead (False Gods) references this.
Moving Prospero to after Istvann wasn't some BL retard plan, McNeil just completely fucked up and the editor (don't think it was Laurie then) didn't catch it.

Then, to make it worse, when the fans asked what that fuck was up with such a big error, McNeil l i t e r a l l y doubled-down on it and claimed the fans didn't know what they were talking about.
Then he eventually 'fixed' the totally-not-an-error-guise error by retconning his own accidental retcon in one line in Wolf Hunt. What a total prick he can be sometimes.
>>
>>52537176
The Emperor's Gift, as it covered the first war for Armageddon.

As for heresy-era original stories, Prince of Crows was a pretty crushing defeat for the Night Lords (Dark Angels victory).

On the topic of Outcast Dead, its even funnier because it makes no sense in Black Library canon either, every other book about the subject (including more than one by Mcneill) set it before the Eisenstein arrived back at Terra.

I'm thinking of making a small blackshield force at some point. But it's pretty normal for certain recasters. And it's salvageable. Fill in the step with putty (Green Stuff, Milliput, Testor's putty, etc.) then when it's dry start cutting the step at an angle. Once the step is more like a 30 degree slope, put on a face mask and sand it under running water.

That's one of the reasons they brought Laurie onboard (he joined around the same Deliverance Lost came out). The subject of ADB's female characters is interesting.
Your typical 'kissless virgins' were complaining in your standard terrible ways that they didn't like how he had so many women in positions of power and authority in his work. "It's unbelievable so many women exist in this circumstance", "How could a woman be the Captain of a Legion flagship?", 'But why is the Inquisitor a woman and not a man?"
These questions are self-evidently stupid, but because we are all slightly autistic, people got into actual tit for tat arguments trying to justify their opinions.

Then ADB made statements explaining his reasoning, because he was starting to get abusive messages criticising him for having 'sand niggers" and "useless bitches" in his work.
He responded that, a) well, the Word Bearers are partly Babylonians in space, so Colchisianshave dusky skin etc and b) women are half the population of humanity and it's absurd that you wouldn't see any in the material, especially as in 30K humanity is enlightened past sexism and in 40K grimdark just give a warm body a lasrifle trumps sexism there.
The fact that he even had to explain this honestly tells you all you need to know about the type of people angrily writing to him to complain.

Now as I said a while ago, it's hilarious that people get upset about ADB's 'anti-sexism' measures when his own leanings - be they to actual tropes or it's just his psychology - manifest his women as mother/whore archetypes more often than not. It tickles me that the guy trying to move us all beyond juvenile attitudes where the appearances of women are concerned falls so easily into a highly criticisable trap. He's lucky that SJWs don't read BL, bluntly.
So, waifuism? It's just a pat name for his habit of making women act as objects for the male characters to worship. Is this better than there being no women? Yes. Is it better than doing a Dan and just making them ordinary people? No.

That sentence in itself is dumb - "enlightened" to the point where you don't consider a significant biological factor, that you can generalize accurately enough whether it would be suitable in a role or not. This isn't the 19th century, where social environmentalism had enough lack of evidence to the contrary to give the impression it could be accurate. Forcing people to ignore significantly weaker, lesser traits in recruitment for something like the Imperial Army, is pure ideology. Hmm, I have a healthy average male and a healthy average female for a role in the infantry... Which do I pick.. Hmm...

Let's try to find a new controversial topic.

I think drop pods suck to play against unless it's an all drop pod army (since you've then got the reserves rule hurting you a bit by giving you your army in waves). There isn't enough you can do about a single drop pod. Intercept attacks it after it lands, and its occupants get some decent protection for their nearly-guaranteed round of shooting.

Maybe the points cost of a dreadnought drop pod or dreadclaw is sufficient for how good they are, but standard pods are a bit too good for 35 points.

What a lot of people don't seem to know that is that positive discrimination still is discrimination. For example, the vast majority of women don't want to get a certain job because the company had to reach some arbitraty quota. They want to be sure they earned it on their own merit.

But the whole issue is probably never going to be solved because being a human means being unable to be 100% objective. I do my utmost best to treat everybody equally, but when some lady with a gorgeous cleavage is talking to me I still sweat more than in a different scenario. Don't judge me.

a well written character has nobody wondering about how he even got in that position. Nobody cares about all the female Mechanicus characters because they're fucking mechanicus. What's weird is how all the major marine characters have some female sidekick hanging around, and where Lotara and Guilliman's mum are decent, having what seems like the majority of supporting humans be female to get an overall better gender ratio just feels weird and forced.

>>52539178

Even by the women don't make good footsoldiers argument (in itself a luxury that I find unlikely in the grim darkness of the far future), ADBs women tend to be in positions of command, or are pilots, or sort of just hang around. Inquisitors aren't soldiers either, and physical ability has almost nothing to do with their job.

Except that given some role's require genetic abilities, you argument goes moot the moment you make it. Fluff states that the amount of people capable of piloting a Titan is incredibly small, and that the Mechanicum will go great lengths to obtain such individuals, i wouldn't be surprised if the same goes for Knight households and other branches of the Imperium.

Likewise the same goes for the Imperial Navy, which has no reason to limit the pool of Talent from which they can recruit because of some biological arguments.
>>
>>52539018
Even if you made women physically equal to men (military women have been scifi trope for ages), it wouldn't remove psychological or cultural drives. Unless a planet had a unisex conscription policy, I would not see 50% of all women on all Imperial planets joining the military. Fucking hell, even today when you have fields that not only are open to women, but actively incentivize women to participate, you can't get a 50-50 split between the sexes. I bet you could pay women 10 times the amount you pay men, and you'd never get anywhere near 50-50 split in sewage workers or miners.
>>
>>52539178
I've never understood the inconsistency that you can't charge after deep striking because that's a play that cannot be countered by an opponent, but you can shoot to full effect after deep striking. People sometimes point to the damage a sweeping advance can do, but it's not like a full squad of combiweapons will leave much alive either.
>>

>>
>>52539310

Yes, if the role doesn't require a physical taxonomy that only men on average can do adequately, then it wouldn't make sense to generalize. I didn't state anything to the contrary. The biological differences between male and female brains however, is wide, but not wide enough to discriminate for a role, let's say, some Navy vox-hailer, or whatever. Non-combat roles have been filled in the military throughout history, nurses, camp followers, and so on.
>>

Military participation is usually just a few percent of the population. You don't need to enlist half of a planet's women!

Also, no one's written about worlds that enlist as many women as men in 40k/30k. Some have female officers only, others have women in 3rd-line PDF units (at which point you're desperate that you can't be picky), and others have all-women regiments but without claiming that they compare in number to all-male regiments from the same planets.

So you're right, but no one's saying you're wrong.
