INITIAL D-STRENGH, Custodes Edition

Punished Mortarion sub-edition

We gave back pats and Primarch seniority was discussed. Multiple tech-heresies are starting, and we had a fun discussion of the armour-piercing capabilities of mace-type weapons. All of that and much more in the previous thread >>52408891

Did the Blood Angels ever fight the Thousand Sons in any major battle before Terra? A "who rocks red marines better" engagement.
>>
Might convert a forge lord in cataphractii terminator armor + conversion beamer mostly for the look. However, has anyone found them useful in game? Normally run SoH with pods and melee though
>>
>>52422695
Don't think so. Signus Prime was the only major engagement BA took part of before Terra. Maybe Angelus will fluff it out.

According to the Custodes Codex all the Custodes besides the 300 companions have left Terra on a crusade because they're so inspired by roboute guilliman

It also established that for the last 10,000 years any custodes who feels unfit to serve the emperor would abandon his armor and roam the galaxy in a black cloak. Dunno what that's all about.
>>

>>
>>52422709
If you're going for the cool Forgelord Conversion Beamer factor, then do it. Just saying, terminator armour would be overdressing him, but his squad would be a decent sniper squad with 36" range Rad Missile servitors.
Fuck FW creep, man.

I wonder why they couldn't give terminators havoc launchers (like how contemptor CML is a havoc launcher in 30k) and leave CML for special units as the new hotness. Cataphractii with big meaty missile batteries is pure secks and only 2 legions having access to them is a crime against humanity.

Do people in ultramar (including Bobby G when he is not in armour) wear Roman style robes or is that just artistic license with fanart
>>
>>52425731
Anyone that makes corax out to be innocent or perfectly noble doesn't understand the point of his story arc. At the heart he's painted as a pragmatist above all else with the long term goal of making imperial governance universally decent to its citizens (40k imperium is basically his worst nightmare made real). The arc of his story is a tragedy, as it should be, and is something of a microscope mirror of what the setting is which can be boils down to "even gods and demigods trying their best fail and everything gets worse because of it"
>>
>>52425941
Ultramar culture seems very roman natively. Except for Fulgrim and Magnus, there's no real evidence of primarchs promoting art and culture.

Still a bit pissed that Battle for the Abyss was retconned to "Lorgar expected it to fail anyway because lololz the Pantheon told him it would fail"
>>
>>52425995
No detail is ever really given besides a few notes about the governments they leave behind on planets they bring to compliance and his intentions for 'after the crusade' but given his whole bent is anti-slaver and anti-tyrant, I'd be willing to bet something more along the lines of reppublicanism mixed with benevolent dictatorship, as those tend to be the most stable long-term models. (Athenian democracy only lasted a few hundred years and we haven't gotten much farther yet)

It's an interesting facet to his character personally. and one that might have made for more interesting writing than some of the 'muh chaos' tripping. (Gav, seriously, it wouldn't have hurt to explore a few other things)
>>
>>52426072
>Fulgrim performs the Ferrus special on Bobby G and he still comes back
Did the Pantheon told him Horus would end up obliterated and that his shitty first captain would be more of the God's chosen than either the Warmaster or himself would ever be?
>>
Were there any Primarchs who had boring lives before being found?

Like;

>The Emperor knocks on an elderly couple's door, asks if their son is here.
>Sits down at a table far too small for him, is served tea.
>Primarch comes down, wedges himself into a seat at the tiny table, pours himself a tea, asks what this is about
>*gasp* "I'm adopted?"

>Gosh Mr Emperor, I can't drop everthing to become a space general, I have a very important job handling shipping and receiving forms for a major corporation.

Fulgrim started out as a miner.
Vulkan was a regular smith and Mortarion spent his time as a farmer and handyman, but both ended up rallying the population against the inhuman menace.
Had the Emperor arrived a bit earlier, he would've been surprised at how His children were able to live normie lifes despite how big they were.
>>
>>52425650
Corax could literally turn invisible. Just wait till a few of the guards aren't quite paying attention, and unlock the cells. A few prisoners will die, but they should be able to sufficiently bumrush the guards and steal their weapons, rinse and repeat.
>>
>>52426185

Well that might be 'live normie life' for his hometown, though.

Does the Disciplined Fire rule give +1BS to Fists with bolters in overwatch?
As a reference, Sons of Horus' Death Dealers explicitly mentions situations in which the bonus doesn't apply - Fury of the Legion, Snap Shots, Chain Fire - whereas there's no such mention in the Disciplined Fire entry.

GK aren't psykers because of their gene-seeds, they're all selected from existing psykers. The Emperor merely created their gene-seeds specifically for them.

>And Grey Knights are said to be superior that Custards.

Where? I can understand them being better at anti-daemon work, due to their nature, but I'm sure Custodes still have them beat in pure combat strength and resilience.
>>
>>
>>52427643
Plenty of the suspected founders of the Grey Knights weren't psykers to begin with.

Anyways sources

>‘They are called the Grey Knights,’ said Veritus. ‘They are a force of warriors without peer, engineered from gene-seed taken from the Emperor Himself a thousand years ago. A last, parting gift from our god before He was taken from us to sit upon His Golden Throne.’

>‘They are Adeptus Custodes then?’ Wienand rubbed her hand along the wood. Whereas the bench in the Sigillite’s Retreat was smooth and dry, the grain of this wood was rough under her touch, the strands of lignin still swollen with moisture. Although dead, it smelt fresh; a sense of life still clung to it.

>‘They are greater than the Adeptus Custodes,’ said Veritus. ‘Each one is a potent psyker. Their strength is in their brotherhood. As the end approached, the Emperor foresaw a need for warriors who could stand against Chaos, incorruptible and mighty, and He made them so, the mightiest warriors beside the primarchs He ever created. For them, the daemon holds no fear. I believe that, in time, the Emperor hoped mankind would realise its psychic potential, avoid the catastrophe that struck the eldar, and end the threat of Chaos forever. In the Grey Knights, I see hope for the future. They are the pinnacle of what we could be.’

>‘The eldar are psychic by nature. From what they have hinted, that sped their destruction. They tell me that we have already fallen. The Dark Age of Technology was our era of might, and even then we could not match their empire of old. They persisted for millions of years, we for mere thousands and now we slowly die.’ She thought of the Sigillite’s Retreat as she said that.

>‘We rose again, and we can rise a third time. They are the spent force, not us,’ said Veritus. ‘We must believe this, or we are doomed. When you see the Grey Knights, you will understand that there is hope.’

Well the vast majority of humanity does have some form of psychic potential in the GrimDark. So whilst not all GK recruits are active psykers, it very well could be that GK geneseed merely unlocks or enhances that potential.

Not true, The Grey Knights can boost their physical strength via psychic power. You know, biomancy. I mean you have child psyker killing hordes of Orks with his bare hands. You have the Master of Death ripping a Hive Tyrant and its Tyrant Guard with just his fists. And these two example do not approach the mastery of the Grey Knights.

When the Ork was released in an area filled Waaagh! energy he oversucked all the Waaagh! around him to the point that he exploded and send a great psychic shockwave that killed all Orks. This is what usually happens with WB but on a large scale due to drainage of the Sisters and the amount of Waaagh! generated by the Beast Orks.

S8, AP2, Heavy 3 Blast, Deflagrate, Molten Heat.

Molten Heat: When a vehicle takes a penetrating hit from this weapon, do not roll on the vehicle damage table. Instead, automatically inflict a Crew Stunned result and any transported units cannot disembark in the enemy's next turn (all the hatches and such are melted shut for a bit).
If the vehicle is open-topped, the transported units each take D6 S5 AP5 Deflagrate hits per penetrating hit suffered.

Hoping that combined with all the Pinning coming out of the 16 Shrapnel Bolters and the ability to carry units on top deck and Grav-Chute them down it'll lock the enemy down for everything else to kill while sniping key targets with Deflagrate storms. Not very good against heavy tanks and such, though.
>>
>>52428781
>Volkite Eradicator
So it's basically only good against rhinos and troops? Because it can't pen any other commonly used transport.

Someone mentioned Russ was knocked out on Yarant. The last I heard he was confronting Khan on the edge of the Solar System before Khan says fuck off I'm in a hurry. Have I missed a short or audiobook somewhere about Russ?
>>
>>52428863
>Russ eventually led the Wolves out from Terra to try and engage Horus. However, this ended in disaster with the Space Wolves besieged by traitor forces at Yarant. During the battle, Russ was badly wounded and fell into a comatose state. He awoke only when Corax arrived with the Raven Guard, awake long enough to greet the Ravenlord and give Bjorn the Spear of Russ. In the end, the Space Wolves were able to evacuate Yarant with Corax's aid but Russ remained unconscious.

How does this look as a starter list? LGS tends to play smaller games, typically 1500, and there's not enough 30k to purely play AOD games so would be facing some 40k armies too. Yes, I am aware 30k is at a disadvantage at that points level, but it is what it is. It'll take a bit of time/money to get a fully painted 1500 point force anyway, so am actually okay with not having to jump in at 2500 points or whatever. So:

>Alpha Legion, Coils Of The Hydra ROW

>HQ
Delegatus consul - 130
(Jump pack, power fist & dagger, refractor field, artificer armour)

>Troops
10 Tactical marines - 135
(Power dagger, meltabombs)
Rhino - 50
(Pintle multimelta)

10 Tactical marines - 135
(Power dagger, meltabombs)
Rhino - 50
(Pintle multimelta)

10 Tactical marines - 135
(Power dagger, meltabombs)
Rhino - 50
(Pintle multimelta)

>Elites
Contemptor-mortis dreadnought - 180
(Kheres assault cannons)

Rewards of treason: 5 Dark fury marines - 180
(Meltabombs, joined by delegatus)

>Heavy support
Predator - 135
(Executioner plasma destroyer, pintle combiplasma)

Sicaran venator - 190

Vindicator - 130
(Laser destroyer)

>Total: 1500 points

I'm thinking about collection Mechanicum as a second army, starting as a allied force. What units should I get first?
>>
>>52429059
Depends if you're going cybernetica, taghmata or reductor. Read up on the differences and make up your own mind.
>>
>>52429068
Taghmata, the vanilla one IIRC
>>
>>52428833
Yeah, the general idea is that anything not in a Transport is badly hurting or dead, Rhinos are in trouble and light tanks like Predators can be bullied and possibly locked down for a turn. The vehicle as a whole will have Tank Hunter because Suborbital Strike Wing, though.

Does that sound a bit wimpy for a unit that costs more than a Reaver? I was going to allow it to fire without the blasts to hit air targets too.

Was debating on giving it a variant of Haywire, where it autoglances on a 4 and pens on a 5+, or possibly a single small blast D mode, but I'm not sure whether that would be too much.
>>
>>52428948
Looks alright, although you might want to swap the Venator for a standard sicaran or anothe laser destroyer vindicator. Unless you regularly run into superheavy vehicles and don't want to field one of your own the Venator has a harder time justifying its point cost.

We'll the comparisons are always done close combat wise. Although that's not really a fair comparison I suppose as Magnus can fly around and cast strength d spells so russ would probably never get near him.

So Magnus wins, because there is no reason to stop flying cirlces around Russ and just zap him to death with a 18'' beam D

>>
>>52429384
That's really the thing with magnus, be it 30k or 40k. If he's stuck in combat with a giant meatball something's gone horribly wrong.
>>
>>52429380
40k Guilliman is a monsterous creature, so he has no way to be transported. He does have 2+/3++ saves, but good luck catching up to anything with 6'' movement.
The only way for him to get close fast is new marine psychic power shenanigans

It's my impression or new fluff is getting worse?
>>
>>52429632

>>
>>52429632
Rose tinted glasses, the grass is always greener on the other side, the setting being advanced would inevitably bring about change which people don't like.

It's all business, take the odds and ends you like and stick with them.
>>
>>52429672
Nah. The new fluff reads like some children's story, not a space opera.
>>
>>52429685
>implying Warhammer was ever any good as a space opera
>>
>>52429147
Wait, fixed it. I can just drop all the alternate firing modes and give the whole thing Enhanced Targeting. Now it properly butchers infantry and I don't have to worry about giving it mega-OP special rules beyond"big melty thing". Pinning a bunch of guys and locking any strike squads like Kharibdis and Plasma Supports in Rhinos inside their boxes lets everything inside disembark in good order without being shot at, which is the general idea. I would give it deployable fortifications, but with carrying four vehicles it can do that itself.
>>
>>52429702
>implying the term 'space opera' makes sense anyway
>>
>>52429672
I think it's also the case that the more fluff written, the more chance there is the overall standard goes down. Specially because negatives are always remembered better than positives .
>>
>>52429672
But there's some very obvious things that fans would enjoy, and quite obviously the writers have a bias towards their interests. It was the same for WHFB, there's just so many places they could have taken the plot but didn't because they wanted the setting to be their creatiopn. A lot of the new designers have been fans since the mid 2000s compared to longtime fans from the 80s.

Have actually been considering using the daggers for another purpose: as a way of giving the sergeants a melee weapon as well as a combiweapon (without paying for CCWs for the whole squad). Been wondering whether they'll do more damage on average with a combiplasma than with a powerfist, now leaning toward that with the dagger as a little surprise bite in melee.

This always bothered me. Rogal is supposed to be the most professional-soldier-like of the primarchs in temperament, skill, equipment, etc. He's not a warlord, or a barbarian, or a demagogue, or a sorcerer, or an administrator, or even a general, he's the soldier of the bunch.

He even has a bolter and a chain sword, but man they made those two things crappy. He's great at taking down terminators and robots with the crazy number of low ap attacks he can make, and sundering blow for taking on big robots (st8 ap2 at initiative is really good, especially combined with rampage and reaping blow) but his BS5 rending heavy bolter sucks.

Basically what I'm saying is he should be suited to both shooting well and fighting non-primarchs well. The latter he does I think as well or better than most other Primarchs, but the former... he kinda feels... meh.

Actually, the Blood Angels legion got split up badly. Not all of them assembled before leaving for Signus Prime, only the bulk. The rest who were left behind were basically trapped behind enemy lines, believed themselves orphaned, and either were under siege by the traitors until the last astartes fell or began preforming covert hit and run guerrilla actions against the traitors.

They talk about it with the Rites of War section for the Blood Angels.

>He does outwit Dorn and succesfully draws him into the trap
>He however forgot about making sure noboy could get in
>Which allowed Archamus and some other IF to barge in and save Dorn at the very last moment
>Because Alpharius couldn't help gloating about how he out-witted Dorn and explaining how much exactly he out-witted him

seems more in character than

Fucking kek, he was Goldie McGoldface
>>
>>52433985
Well, this is the same movie that gave us characters like Pussy Galore. Played by Honor Blackman, because silly names shouldn't be restricted to just fiction.
>>
>>52433765

They did it with the prior two legions, they did it with all of the traitor legions, and this was clearly a traitor using psykers and foul sorcery of immense power.
>>
>>52434110
>They did it with the prior two legions
No, no one knows what happened with the prior two legions.

>they did it with all of the traitor legions
Only a handful of them, and the methods and mentality of the pre-heresy imperium and the post-heresy imperium are markedly different to one another.
>>
>>52434110
Inferno shows that the space wolves were not responsible for the missing legions. It was the Rangdan.
>>
>>52434155

>Space Wolves aren't even the Emperor's Executioners anymore

How much can one legion suck ass? I bet ADB had something to do with this, he was really vocal about his hate for the idea that they took out the two past legions.
>>
>>52434155
Where does it say that?
>>
>>52434155

Well that fucks up Fear to Tread as well and makes Sanguinius' paranoia over the Emperor exterminating his sons completely unwarranted.
>>
>>52434197
Page 81

>>52434198
Fear to Tread was fucked up to begin with. They shouldn't have had the Black Rage before their primarch's death.
>>
>>52434155
>Perhaps the Rangdan corrupted a Primarch to their side
>But Alpharius was corrupted too and he was cured, so that doesn't matter
>>52434226
It was the Red Thirst, not the Black Rage.
>>
>>52434226
>They shouldn't have had the Black Rage before their primarch's death.
They didn't. They had the Red Thirst.
>>
>>52434198
That's impossible anon. Whoopie Goldberg made sure there wouldn't be any inconsistencies.
>>
>>52434198
If anything, the Emperor already knew about it. " am as my Father made me", remember?
>>
>>52434155
It still hints at the Space Wolves being involved with one of the missing legions. Probably the one that didn't disappear during the Rangdan Genocides - or maybe it was. Maybe the Rangdan somehow corrupted one of them.
>>
>>52434226

No, they were manifesting the Red Thirst as a genetic disorder in their gene seed.

The Black Rage was later.

Again, not a problem.
Unless Alpharius was able to be saved due to the lessons learned at Rangda
>>
>>52434272

Right, but only his Sons were exhibiting the uncontrollable Red Thirst. Sanguinius might be fine but his gene-sons were not.

It is fitting that they can't reach the light of their father, that some slight flaw in his being is magnified tenfold through his artificial progeny.
>>
>>52434289
Huh, I thought the black rage was the one that made you murder everyone around you.

Red thirst does that also apparently. Geez, blood angels sure paid a price for their transformation.
>>
>750.M30: The Primarch Project. The Emperor of Mankind learns warpcraft from the Chaos gods and uses it and advanced Martian genetic engineering to create the primarchs and the gene-seed prototypes.

Is this for real? Jesus fucking Christ.
>>
>>52434347
It should be Luna genetic engineering reeeeeee.
>>
>>52434340
Red Thirst just makes you desperately thirsty for a certain red liquid ... And it is not tomato juice

>>52434347
Where did you get that from ?
>>
>>52434347
Ignore black library.
>>
>>52434340

When you fall to the Red Thirst there is absolutely no possibility of salvation. You basically turn into a blood hungry ghoul who only eats and kills.

The Black Rage is the onset of insanity via erratic genetic memory overriding their senses and bringing on delusions. Iirc there is so degree of lucidity from it, to an extent, but only through constant prayer and administration from the Chaplains. These warriors can be controlled, to a degree, enough to be directed and used as the suicide shock troops.

Sanguinius' gene-seed left the greatest mental scarring of all, it's explicitly stated in one of the FW books.
>>
>>52434384

The First Heretic. That was ADB wasn't it?
>>
>>52434399
>Was sure it wasn't ADB
>Doublechecks just to be sure
>It is ADB

Well fuck me sideways.

Anyway never trust anything that is told by anything chaos related ... specially from a ADB book.

What were they doing to the BA that made their transformation worse than Space Wolves?
>>
>>52434451

He has irl daddy issues doesn't he? Its kind of pathetic if that bleeds over into his writing and perceptions of the setting.
>>
>>52434466
Yes, his drunk father used to beat him. Some anon posted the blog post a while ago.
>>
>>52432605
well boaty mcboatface is actually now a class of research submarine. as a nod to the popular vote
>>
>>52434463

Sanguinius' blood is too pure for mortal men even with gene manipulation. It turns skeletal, starving, cancer ridden, rad-afflicted ablino nuclear apocalypse wasteland survivors into glorious blonde 7-8 foot tall ubermensch. Imagine if he used the process on human stock less fucked up by their environment?
>>
>>52434497
Like the Terrans?
>>
>>52434497
Did they still do all the organ implants? Or did the blood some how add them? This is really weird.
>>
>>52434463

I know they're the 'space vampires' legion, but, they have a monster inside them. Sanguinius when wrathful is suppose to be beyond terrifying. He goes from heavenly angelic savior to destroyer of worlds in a heartbeat. I mean, he held the Gates by himself for a day against daemon and traitor alike. Dude is a fucking psychopath when it comes time to fight.
>>
>>52434523
Both the regular geneseed treatment supplemented by Angel juice, like how Space Wolves also drink Canis Juice to supplement the transformation.
But why are the Salamanders even mentioned? Their change is merely cosmetic, and doesn't really kick in unless you take off your armour in space or wade around Nocturne.
>>
>>52434523

They still do organ implantation, but that is after spending a year long coma in the blood coffin while their bodies grow into full-sized Astartes and all of their imperfections and illnesses are purged from their system.

Sometimes they wake up early and go mad during the process. Others have intense nightmares, like Dante did.
>>
>>52434514
The Terrans didn't get angel juice because they didn't have an angel to supply it
>>
>>52434308
that only works if you believe that account, the very pic you posted shows 3 other possible origins
>>
>>52434463

Okay but imagine if they'd made it so Sanguinius's gene seed grants wings.

The only ones they didn't exterminatus had either already been destroyed (Prospero, Nostramo, and Nuceria) or were unknown (Hydra Dominatus)

Though that is half of them.

>>52434185
They got the title because ending the Rangdan threat required the VIth and Ist to wipe out all life in several sectors, including human life.

This is also why nobody trusts the Dark Angels.
