What's the best build, in general, for a swashbuckler, including high levels not typically reached? 11 fighter/3 rogue? just for fun

The answer is still mystic. Use nomadic step and cloak of wind to emulate swashbuckling.

Not him but...

- Allow content (Volo Race,UA,Homebrew) is a big one.
- Timezone is another big one
- Age limit... maybe?
>>
>>52322695
Mystic is the best answer for alot of classes, that's part of why it's such a shit class itself. It's every niche in the game but with psychic powers.

>>52322705
Mountain Standard Time, pretty open but there's a guy in Spain who always causes troubles.

Volo and Sword Coast is fine. UA depends on how much of a faggot you're trying to be.

One sec and I'll make a roll20 page, tone is going to be the same tone of every D&D campaign (attempted seriousness that turns into black comedy), DMing and detailed character actions is mainly text, will probably use voice as a side thing so players can discuss strategy if desired and ask for clarification etc.

After or before race?

In OD&D that's fine, you can have a totally viable char with straight 3s there.

What's the best way to stat a war mage/ red wizard?
I'm thinking pumping int/ con, Vhuman with Fighter 1/ evocation wizard x for heavy armour, defence fighting style with shield and war caster feat.
Or Fighter 5 for extra attack and and battlemaster manoeuvres, but loose out on the 9th level spell.

What spells should I take? I'm thinking a mix of damage dealing, defence and mobility.

I guess my favorite anime is Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne, as a storyline that takes place across a vast span of time in a changing world is probably the most relevant to my interests, and Rin would probably be my first pick for a waifu, I guess.

I have a cute black cat and my neighbor has a calico-looking husky mix that gets out a lot that is pretty cool.

My favorite Twilight Zone is probably The Obsolete Man.
>>
>>52323032
Sure, but doesn't fit with my RP concept, nor does it give me heavy armour. DM is pretty roleplay heavy, and I was hoping to be at or near the frontline, and primarily casting damage spells. Given that wizard gets a lot, and primarily relies on spells rather than weapons
>>

I haven't put anything up yet. After I'm done here I'll probably make a list of stuff we've agreed on from this thread.

So far:
1. Point buy
2. Pretty standard Faerun
3. HotDQ inspired
4. All published splats allowed, UA grudgingly allowed with sanity checks as appropriate (I don't like garbage along the lines of loremasters and nuclear druids)
5. Probably using Vitality, may use other variant rules from the books.
6. The PCs will likely get a feat training reward quickly, ie. before level 4.
7. No other early "balance fixes" are intended, though Simulacrum factories etc. are not my cup of tea.

I'm going to be running a game soon for two players. One soliution I have to filling out the party was to create a bunch of NPC followers that mechanically function like PCs, each with their own backstory and side quests that could be completed or not depending on what the players decide to do.

I have a couple of questions, however...

First, I was thinking of having them only level up when their specific goals or story archs are completed as opposed to just taking a portion of XP from the PCs - both to incentivize the players to aid the followers they like so they can become stronger, and to prevent the book keeping and rebalancing necessary if these lower level followers suddenly level up mid adventure. Is this a good idea? I'm worried it will ruin game balance, as the DMG recommends that said followers do take their share of XP since they were helping the party in combat.

Secondly, I'm going to have the players controlling these NPCs in combat, only over ruling their decisions if they act out of character. During normal play, I don't want the NPCs doing too much other than maybe commenting a little and helping with skill checks - but I don't want them to just be video game party members that have zero presence until a fight starts. I want to strike a balance between ensuring the players feel like the protagonists of the story and not a side show to these followers - but also not making the followers just feel like video game pieces. How do I do this right?

Our DM allows us to multiclass to optimize our characters.

I made a dragon sorc and want to dip into barb so that my AC equals 13 + Con + Dex (unarmored defense). However, the DM says that i can't have both (only the bonus from sorc applies). Is he right /tg/?
>>
>>52323634
Yes he's right. You can choose to use the 10+DEX+CON or 13+DEX.
>>
>>52323634
Your DM is absolutely correct. In general, abilities do what they say.
>>
>>52323641
>>52323646

B-b-but why?
>>
>>52323634
Now dip into Monk too and argue that
10+Dex+Con+Wis so the DM bans you from the table
>>
>>52323634

Your DM is right. You can't stack them. Check Sage Advice.
>>
>>52323650
Because neither of those are bonuses, they're a new method of calculation. You can use one, or the other, but you can't combine them.
>>
>>52323650
By RAW/RAI, because the 10+CON and the 13 acts as your base AC, and you can only use one of those at a time.

By fluff, because you have to be extremely hardy for your skin to get even tougher than your already tough dragon scales.
>>
>>52323650

Because in general 5e strives to avoid "dip one level for unintended combos".
>>
>>52323517
>>First, I was thinking of having them only level up when their specific goals or story archs
That's fine, just tune encounters for the larger party size and just have the followers "leech" the additional EXP. i personally use milestone levels and do away with XP in my campaign for all PCs.

>>Secondly, I'm going to have the players controlling these NPCs in combat,
just have them be more engaging during non-combat scenes. for example, instead of narrating stuff yourself, you could act as the character and give a description from their words. making sure they have a presence just means that you are actively engaging them in the story. doesn't hurt to have acting skills to make sure your varied characters don't feel too stale or same-y
>>
>>52323594
The iterative penalty thing is in line with 3e but not 5e. If anything, lose advantage or gain disadvantage on the first penalty, and subsequent attacks being with disadvantage until one misses, would maybe apply, though still be clunky as hell.
>>
>>52323650
>B-b-but why?

You can save the trouble of asking by remembering this simple rule: abilities do what they say.

>While you are not wearing any armor, your Armor Class equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier. Vou can use a shield and still gain this benefit.

Nowhere does it say "when unarmored, add your Constitution modifier to your existing AC" which is probably what you wished it said.
>>
>>52323676
What is the highest AC you can get at level 2? Assume point buy, and no UA stuff.
>>
>>52323759

I can't find this mentioned anywhere. It only says "If the target can't follow the command, the spell ends". If it was a physical command, then if the target can't physically do it, then sure it ends. But this would be a mental command. And forgetting is something everyone can do.

Get magic initiate or multiclass for GFB/BB (Rapier combat, though bonus points if you pick up a shield from somewhere)... However, if you want to do this, you're better off just being an AT that gets the mobile feat.
OR
Get 5 levels of barbarian (+speed, +Tankiness for melee combat, +extra attack, viable with strength for grappling and thus two-weapon-fighting)

Basically I think the only 'optimal' swashbuckler builds (That aren't trumped by AT) are multiclass builds, especially barbarian.

Of course, just do what you want, though.

Hmm, I guess that's where it falls apart indeed. I guess much like sleeping, the target would attempt to forget but probably fail to actually do so by the time the spell ends.
>>
>>52324194
The traditional way of interpreting this spell is, if a player tries anything ambiguous, to have it fail or do something stupid.

At most, if it was used on someone trying to remember something specific (a command word, etc) it'd make him forget for a round.

Eh, you could do this with an AT without multiclassing with a feat.

Pick up BB/GFB as cantrips.
Spellcasting is obvious.
Pick up mage armour as one of your spells.
Pick up the 'mobile' feat.

Now you're just as good, except you have +10ft speed, you don't get the easier sneak attacks and you don't get +CHA to initiative.
But you can multiclass to pick up shield proficiency I guess.

Hm. I suppose it's not an overwhelming advantage to be AT there until the later levels (Considering you keep getting more and more spells and eventually shit like haste), at the lower levels at least swashbuckler might be better there.

Dude wants to be a swashbuckler, good at public, 1v1 duels without obviously magical tricks. Cantrips etc. are unquestionably nice, but the easier sneak attacks are the jist of the character, the player doesn't want to ever have to depend on a party member.
>>
>>52322564
So how do you guys handle the stuff outside of core? Do you allow it outright or do you trickle it in slowly to give flavor to the world?

So, for example, is Green Flame Blade and the other sword coast spells require an actually trip to the sword coast to learn them or can they just choose that cantrip from the get-go? Do starting characters have to come from core races but once you meet some of the Volo monster races they become available for later characters or are all races open at the start for chargen?

But AT gets self-granted advantage later, a rogue can always use a bonus action to hide, the AT gets a familiar for either advantage or just standing near the enemy to mark them, the fact you don't even have teammates to help you in the first place is already worrying...

If you want to be good at 1v1, having more speed is probably better. If for some crazy reason you had truestrike, you could truetsrike->bonus dash 80ft ->attack next turn->run more...

Yes, the sneak attack thing is good, but it's also why I call swashbuckler 'rogue made easy'. There are many, many ways to get sneak attack, and swashbuckler is reducing you to 'I don't want to fight smart in a 1v1'.
>>
>>52324484
Nothing remotely Sword Coasty about the new class options, they're just stuff put in there that are vaguely appropriate.

For yuan ti, I'd let a dedicated PC play a human, meet the yuan ti, and bring the sacrifices and potion ingredients to make him one, at which point he can swap it out. Would be at level 4 or 8, so he doesn't lose a feat.
>>
>>52324528
Oh, speaking of which, if you're using GFB/BB then you won't be using two-weapon-fighting which means advantage as an action is about as good as attacking every turn, except there's a (ChanceToHit)^2 where chance to hit is between 0 and 1 loss if you were likely to hit both attacks anyway.
>>
>>52324528
A guy who uses magic to beat people is totally counterproductive to the concept, especially because his opponent and all onlookers can quite rightly say "Oh wow, you can use magic to win a fuckin duel, whoop de doo."

>the fact you don't even have teammates to help you in the first place is already worrying...

Not wanting to depend on teammates, and not having teammates, are very different.

Because he's a swashbuckler, and coincidentally the archetype says swashbuckler and allows you to do swashbuckler things like chop people up 1v1 no tricks?

Not to mention an at will, nonmagical 1 minute charm ability that seems to have zero limits or consequences for failure that would let him make indifferent NPCs friendly for a bit and in many cases protect the whole party from a potent foe, although I have a feeling the player won't give a shit about that angle.

>Starting at 13th level, you can use a bonus action on your turn to gain advantage on the next Dexterity (Acrobatics) or Strength (Athletics) check you make during the same turn.

If you wanted to be a swashbuckler type, but not use cheap tricks, why not just play a fighter so you have things like Dueling fighting style and more attacks as well as martial ranged weapon proficiency so you can use guns, if your DM allows it.

So, what's your approach towards bards setting-wise?

I mean, it's pretty easy to find a place in the universe for every class in the settings' cultures, but I find bards kinda challenging.

The source of their power is described in the PHB in a very weird way. Is it a trained thing or are you born with it? If it's all about training, can anyone become a bard?
>>
>>52324834
Seeing as how I am the DM, I'd allow the player whatever he wants, including a gun as a backup weapon. I already pointed out his best bet is probably some blend of fighter swashbuckler, though I don't see much bad about it other than wild MADness.

Well shit. I'm now incredibly less satisfied with Glamour bard's Enthralling Performance. I guess being able to target multiple targets and lasting for over an hour makes it worth being limited to once per day and taking 10 minutes of performance to do.

I forgot about that part of Panache. In my memory from a long time back when I did a swashbuckler, it was just a taunt ability.

But it's an at-will non-magical charm person.

If you're aiming for that, that's actually a good reason to aim for swashbuckler, even if AT has a lesser charm person (Though they can upcast charm person or might be able to use it to calm hostile creatures).

Otherwise, really, in general, swashbuckler to me sounds like an easy melee rogue that's just an alternative to a fighter (Expertise and that sort of thing). But the power gap isn't too significant.

Wizards, on the other hand, study a different form of arcane power, and take a more scientific approach to magic.

Good job that tieflings have an option that gives them +2 Dex instead.
For the human and gnome, who gives a shit, they'll be fine. The human can have a +3 in Wis and be decent in everything else. The gnome is a single ASI behind, it isn't crippling.
The monk is the only one in trouble due to the class being so stat intensive.

>>52325239
Great. They have piss-poor health, piss-poor AC, their grappling ability is worse than a barbarian's and worse than a rogue's and worse than a BARD'S and they took a feat that allows them to, as a bonus action (Which they already have a bonus action to attack with) ... -.. Okay, no, wait, I thought you meant 'tavern brawler'. The other grappling feat is 'grappler'
Here's how grappler benefits them:
>You can use your action to restrain yourself???
>You can grapple creatures a size larger than you, even though you could already do that
>You have advantage to attack a creature you're grappling. Wow, advantage to hit with 1d4+STR attacks! You could just shove them to get advantage anyway, or almost anything else to get advantage.

Also, the party has no real tanks. The monk is NOT a tank, in any respect. They're in fact the squishiest player irght now.
The rogue isn't awfully tough until level 5.
The bard... The bard can be tougher if they get to level 3 and get valor bard.
The druid can be by far the most tanky by going moon druid and becoming a bear, but... They're a new player, do they even know how to druid?
>>
>>52325284

>>
>>52325244
There's a gap between 'theorycrafting' and 'randomizing all your options would give a better result than what you've picked'.

It's called 'reading the PHB'. 'Cha is your most important stat! why not try playing:
half-elf, tiefling, halfling, human, drow, dragonborn, aasimar or literally any race that gives +cha?'

Sure, dragonborn might not give you a lot in that case, just +1 charisma, but it's better than this train wreck.

Since there's a bard, why isn't the bard doing the deceive/inimidate/etc stuff? If the bard and the rogue swapped classes, they'd be better off.

Yep, there's the undermountain Jewish Catholics with an Indian caste system, the split kingdom of mixed races that pulled a Church of England, and various scattered minorities, nomads, or pagans.
The subraces are not based on members of these groups or their locales, but their societal roles. In the first, working castes all have military training and are mountain, while cushy upper castes are hardy hill.

In my setting, most bards are from the Colleges of Glamour or Lore.

The former are the most common, taught by nature spirits how to work magic through dance, song, and other forms of entertainment.

The College of Lore is found in the more civilized Empire, where they work for the government primarily as scholars and explorers.
In part because the Empire really wants to uncover the secrets of the former ancient civilization whose ruins dot the area, so they set up the College to research it. They also do work as orators and demagogues, inspiring people with talk of the empire's deeds.
>>
>>52325617
I was thinking just tweaking it. It seems like pinning could quite easily be made fairly useful, if it placed the target at a significant disadvantage to escape. And having advantage on unarmed attacks is already fairly useful to a monk.

+1 in wis and a feat like observant amounts to +2 Wis and some extra stuff so the choice is hardly suboptimal.
>+2 int +1dex/+1con on a charisma-based caster
+2 int does help bards when it comes to skill-monkeying with int skills, and they could be going for a valour bard. It's not optimal, sure, but it's hardly hot garbage.
>+2 str +1 cha on the most stat-hungry class of all that only needs wis/dex/con and needs it BADLY
This is probably the only real issue with the party.

At the end of the day, they're not optimal builds but who gives a shit, if they have fun.

>Swashbuckler
Wow, +1 initiative. Why not just get dexterity instead for the same effect?
Also sounds like they might not be using non-PHB stuff anyway.

>Druid
Yeah, the druid is by far the most hopeful out of the lot. But for all we know they're just a normal human instead of feat human (Especially because it sounds like everybody gets a free feat since the dragonborn has one) which is probably the worst possible class for a normal human to be.

>Hardly hot garbage
I mean, even +2 dex would be better on a bard. Or +2 wis. Or +2 con. Sure, they get to be good at int skills, but... There's already a rogue with a +1 to int +2cha for skill monkeying. Don't really need two skill monkeys when the party's lacking in about every area. That said, I'll admit, it's not the worst it could be.

>>52325717
You really don't need to optimize character to get through LMoP
>>
>>52325640
You haven't been told the reasons to go for the other one, yet.

Mountain dwarf's racial trait is effectively either:
+1 str over most races (So +2 con +1 str -> +2 con +2 str) OR medium armour proficiency.

Medium armour proficiency is great on something like a wizard considering they otherwise need two feats to get it, providing your DM disallows multiclassing for armour bullshit.

Except you also get +2 str and can then take the feat for heavy armour, so go you.

>>52325760
Generally, +AC items should be worth more than plate armour. Plate armour is a conditional +1 AC over splint mail which you can easily get but only those with 15 strength can wear effectively and those who use heavy armour (Mostly just fighters and paladins) can use effectively in the first place.

a +1 AC cloak can stack on top of plate armour and anyone can wear it, and it doesn't do shit like stealth disadvantage or 65lbs or anything.

Refluffing is saying your maul is a huge tetsubo. Your Eldritch Blasts look like tiny divebombing faeries or flaming jack-o-lanterns. Your fighter's combat prowess is thanks to his clan's special runes he had tattooed on him.
What you're doing is trying to create a new weapon that has Finesse and can be used with Polearm Master, which is not only against game design (as nothing such can be used with that feat) but logical intention (the feat is about hitting people with the haft of your pole weapon and holding it out to keep people at bay)
Take a level in monk, wear no armor, and use a quarterstaff and suck your DM's dick to let you use "attacks with Dex" as "Finesse for Sneak Attack"

The issue is that you can get the advantage just from shoving them prone.

Here's how it'd work at level 5:

Monk turn:
Attack > Grapple
Extra Attack > Shove Prone.
Bonus Action > Flurry of Blows at advantage.

Enemy turn, enemy can't get up because their speed is 0, and must attack the monk at a disadvantage.

Next monk turn:
Either continue attacking the current enemy, or go shove them off a precipice, or walk up to another enemy and repeat Grapple > Shove prone. Unarmed attacks don't require hands so they're fully able to flurry or attack normally while holding up to two enemies.

What's a shitty twist that I can throw at them to poke fun at the trope?

So I've got a few questions about grappling, mostly because it seems like there's things you can do in a grapple that you couldn't in previous editions. Not that that's wholly wrong its just sometimes it throws me off a bit.

Is there any kind of difficulty to spellcasting while being grappled? I don't see anything and there may just not be. I know you need often 2 hands to cast a spell (one for somatic one for material/focus) but if you don't engage in the grapple and are simply being grappled it doesn't seem like there's anything to stop you from casting to your hearts content.

On the same note is there any weapon restriction in a grapple? This one drew my attention after one of our players decided to grapple a greatsword wielder, succeeded, and the greatsword wielder proceeded to draw his greatsword and full attack with it completely without penalty, which seemed odd to even picture. Again because he didn't engage in the grapple he had access to both hands and I can't really see anything stopping this from happening.

Now mind you I'm not saying grappling sucks or anything, it seems to still be quite useful and a lot easier to do than previously (and it's probably better that you can't just completely shut people down like before as well), it just seems odd that these things can occur and that sometimes completely ignoring a grapple is the best course of action you can take.

Any map makers or map collectors here? I need something that sort of fits. The description can be modified based on the map but the general look should be similar:

>They sought shelter in a low spot between surrounding hills, where tall boulders have rolled into a loose jumble. In fact, the surroundings offer no protection while making it easier for enemies to sneak up on the site.

>The trail leads to a more rugged region where steep-sided, rocky plateaus replace the gently rolling hills. The land between the plateaus is largely flat, broken only by outcroppings and wandering streams in steep-sided gullies. The plateaus jut 50-100 feet above their surroundings and are difficult to climb except where rock falls and subsidence created natural ramps. The crumbling sides of the plateaus are dotted with caves and tumbled boulder fields.

You're making the best weapon option for Paladins even better by arbitrarily assigning it the Finesse property; it's too strong mechanically, retardedly so.
To boot, PAM working with finesse would be kind of stupid, and GFW would make zero fucking sense within the dictates of reason.

Personally, I'd fellate my DM and let them mount me bareback post-session if they offered me that weapon, but it won't do balancing any favors in an actual game.

Accessing those feats costs just as much for him as anyone else. The weapon invalidates the player's choices.

It's not particularly broken, just better than anything available ATM, and makes going Str (in a class that is Str based) a trap option.

If he does it anyway, it wouldn't matter much, but personally I don't like it.

You're talking about this weapon as if it were available just to buy at the start and create a build around, when it's actually in the context of a gift for a specific character in a specific game.

Sure, as starting gear it would represent an objectively optimal way to deal melee damage but to an Elven Paladin (already a suboptimal choice) receiving it at level 5, it represents one point more damage on average and 5ft more reach, for the price of -2 AC. A magic rapier+1 would be arguably better as in most situations the +5ft reach won't even come into play.

It's not about the auto damage. It's about the 8d8 + Stun Int save. The other options it has other than Id Insinuation are also usable, and have their place, on top of the +2 to your cantrip damge from the Focus.

You can pick the Mastery of Weather one as an alternative. Twice the radius, a sphere instead of a cube, half the range, and targets Con. It depends on if you'll use anything else it has.

It's not really a good idea to compare duelling to GWF. GWF is trash.

It'd probably be the +1 AC fighting style, which means there's only a 1 AC difference but sliiiightly less damage. Unless it was a finesse quarterstaff.

If they're an oathbreaker at level 11, PAM is crazy good considering they get +CHA+1d8 on every hit. But presuming they never get to level 11...

1d8+2+DEX * 2 versus 1d10+DEX * 2 + 1d4+DEX + 'possible' 1d10+DEX

Rapier gives +4 damage +1 AC +1 feat
Glaive gives (1d8->1d10)*2 + 1d4+DEX + possible 1d10+DEX

If 1d8->1d10 is +1 damage (it almost is), 1d4 is 2.5 and +DEX is 4 and the chance of a reactoin attack is 0.5 with 1d10 = 5.5...

Rapier is -9.25 damage a round, +1 AC, +1 feat, -5ft reach.
Though I suppose you'd then have to show the comparison to a +1 rapier. A +1 rapier would likely increase damage by... Let's say +2 damage and +15%?

Rapier gets roughly +5 damage from that, so

-4.25 damage/round, +1 AC, +1 feat, -5ft reach, comparison of dex glaive to rapier(+1)+shield.

Oh, forgot to mention, PAM gives you more chances to crit, which means more chances to activate smite (Though you also have more chances to smite yourself), you'll do better at interrupting concentration, that sort of thing.

Now, a shillelagh (dexterity) if it could even exist quarterstaff with PAM would be interesting.
Same AC, still takes a feat, more attacks, can take duelling.

It'd be identical damage for the first two attacks if the rapier wasn't a magical weapon and then an extra 1d4+2+DEX and then an extra 1d8+2+DEX on reaction attacks.

Presenting the Systematic Weapon Offering Reliable Damage.
It's a simple melee weapon that does 1d12 of your choice of bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, and has the following traits: Finesse, Light, Reach, Thrown (80/320), Versatile (1d15).

That's not the same as a d15 because the possible results are not going to be evenly distributed like they are on one die. Instead of having a 1/15 chance to roll a 15 you only have a 1/48 chance.
