I agree. Kingmaker, despite being a sandbox full of random encounters and a barely-there plot, has got to be one of the worst campaigns to run as a murderhobo combat simulator. The game really shines when you have a DM that can flesh the world out and players who want to immerse themselves. I feel like Kingmaker lends itself to an RP-heavy, maybe even almost slice-of-life style game (although I hesitate to use "slice-of-life" for this because I think it implies a bit too much sitting around and passivity on behalf of the PCs).

Friendly reminder that a city can have as many as 16 districts within it before you need to "spill into" another hex.

This means you can have an entire district of tanners, blacksmiths and forges as your "Street of Steel" while another could be full of boutiques, taverns, brothels and stores for a "Gold Quarter."

Kingmaker's charm has and always will be getting the chance to throw down a tavern and *actually visit it*, with everyone giving you the proper courtesies before continuing on with their day.

This is one of the big failings of Kingmaker - how hard the system punishes you for trying to make a big empire just because it fucked its math up.

Players want to be KINGS, and while that's not an easy job, they shouldn't be fighting uphill against the rules every step of the way to get the normal successful king fantasy.

The other part is that it can sorta catch newer GMs unaware. If they try to, say, follow the plot from point to point, you end up basically losing out on everything kingmaker's meant to be.

I think my old DM that ran Kingmaker had an interesting workaround for this issue.

The biggest problem with Kingmaker usually is the lack of BP in the early and mid-game forcing you to pick the gamey options, and by the time Kingmaker enters Book 5 you're typically too sick of the system to get all fluffy.

My DM worked a system where, every kingdom turn, a positive-happiness citizenry would start work on a structure on their own, effectively doubling your structure production. The process wasn't entirely random; the King can pass edicts (Kingdom rolls) that designate city blocks or entire districts as "manufacturing" or "economic" which would make the DM pick from buildings that fit the bill.

He even divided the building list into "tiers" based on kingdom size; you can't get an Arena if you're a collection of 8 hexes, but an empire spanning the length of the Stolen Lands might (unless you roll a 100, which says, "roll for the next highest tier.")

Well, the idea of a warring states period following the establishment of the PC nation, and the rising tensions between issia and rostland isn't completely insane, especially if orchestrated by a couple of vilderavn and their fey lords. The musuo aspect is more to replace a pre-existing mechanic and matches well with PoW. The Linnorm thing is a little too much imo though.

I combined it with an Alchemist VMC, the Scout archetype, and the Unchained Rogue, and it was awesome. Got Bleeding Attack and spent some resources (a Talent and a feat, as I recall) for Explosive Bomb as well, so I'd dash 10 feet, throw a bomb as a touch attack, explode it for 5d6 damage, +5d6 sneak attack damage, 5 bleed damage, and set the target on fire, plus applying my Debilitating Injury.

It was pretty gimmicky, yeah, but it was fun as hell, and actually very effective as a mobile debuffer/lockdown character. I'd pick one enemy, tell the party to leave them to me and handle the rest, then spend the fight kiting them around and making them pretty much useless while I burned away their HP. The only thing I had trouble with was fire immunity, since I didn't have enough stuff to spend on getting a different damage type for my bombs.

What are the popular archetypes, flavorwise? Not the best or most powerful, the ones that make you say 'I want to play that.'

I personally like the ones that put things in a different light, or are just really Goddamn silly.

For example, the Stone Lord archetype for Paladins. You lose a lot of what makes Paladins hardcore, but you trade that out for sheer tanking potential.

Ironskin Monks lose a whole lot of what makes Monks work, and some of the abilities lost hurts them early game. But they also gain DR, gain a fortitude-based Evasion, and their flavour can be summed up as "there is no greater insult to death, than to ignore him."

And then there's the Feral Gnasher, a goblin archetype for the Barbarian that specializes and entirely revolves around biting people and holding on like a comic relief dog from a 90s movie. And you'd be surprised just how many times they can chew on you, if given the chance.

Yes, CR stupidly uses a different system for adding creatures of CR<1 and CR>=1. Fractional CR creatures need to be put together into CR 1 groups and then treat those groups as a single creature to calculate CR further. The XP method is usually still faster and easier because of this stupid quirk.

Eldritch Scoundrel has one very interesting niche, though. It's one of the few ways to prestige straight into Arcane Trickster without any multiclassing, without losing any caster level. On top of that, because Eldritch Scoundrel trades out half its sneak attack progression for casting, you actually end up with MORE sneak attack dice by prestiging into Arcane Trickster than you would if you just took 20 rogue levels. You also lose half your rogue talents to your archetype, so you have very, very little reason as far as I can tell to not prestige into Arcane Trickster. You're basically trading away a bunch of future rogue talents and SA dice for full casting and then using the casting to qualify for a class that gives you stuff to make up for your lost class features.

In my experience Spheres of Power has been infinitely better as a magic system than vancian casting. If I never hear the words "spell slots" again it will be too fucking soon.

Don't know much about their other content. Spheres of Might looks like it has some good ideas to make martial combat less of a snoozefest, but there needs to be some serious work to make sure it functions properly and doesn't just turn to spam attacks of a different color.

Would appreciate more out of combat utility stuff in SoM, too, although it's been creeping in here and there.

I've tinkered with the idea before. Make it more like an Assassin's Creed assassin- lots of focus on mobility and sudden strikes, while also being able to flourish in melee combat. Steel Serpent, Thrashing Dragon, and Scarlet Throne (?) were going to be the disciplines it would focus on. That's an archetype, not the class default. Almost every "mundane" class can access supernatural abilities via archetypes.

So, /pfg/, I had an idea but Im not entirely sure if I should go through with it.

So I'm playing a heavily armored knight type character with some background levels in divine casting (haven't decided to do Cleric or Oracle yet.) And I want to grab Trap the Soul, and just carry around a bag full of cheap gemstones. So whenever he slays an evil opponent, he'll Soul Trap em.

I'll of course, cover this up by telling my party members I'm just giving them their last rites and assuring they can't be raised for nefarious purposes. Meanwhile I'll just have a big bag of dead folk on my hip.

And since I'm also specializing in Craft Arms and Armor, way later down the block I'll use the (potentially hundreds, depending) of souls to make some indescribably stupid magic item.

So that when they rescue these special someones from Queen A upon her defeat, the PCs think ahead and leave them somewhere flawlessly safe and isolated before entering the burning castle.

This is so that Vildy can reveal how foolish such notions of safety are. During their Nation A captivity, the crow had been convincing them that each had caused the other's misfortune, and would kill each other as soon as they were left alone. If the PCs arrive in time, they might very well be fighting each other. Then again, if the PCs arrive at al, they've probably just sacrificed the queen and country by rushing to them.

Also most people in both nations are dead, there's no food left and Nation C is about to tear itself apart remember. As far as Vilderavning goes, there's not much worse that could be happening in this setup. He'd have won whether he lives or dies.
