Pathfinder General /pfg/

Feedback Edition
Do you think public playtests are a good idea? What about backer ones? Should designers consider all feedback or focus only on smaller samples? Also, SoM playtest is up!

Considering *all* feedback can cause serious issues early on in development, since there's such a wide variety of what people want and expect that it would be unworkable and lack any kind of solid theme and mechanics. Have a small group offering feedback during the formative period, and then once everything is more or less set and the numbers need to be worked, open it up to open feedback.

Is it true PoW forever ruined /pfg/'s ability to think about game balance?

> game that rides around on its customizability
> in reality only a small subset of options are viable
> caster supremacy means if you can't play the magic metagame you lose as a GM
> players rape everything with spells
> the only fun abilities are useless

Remind me why you are not playing 5e again? The core rules are free.
>>
>>52294264
What kind of answer are you looking for? Do you feel that PoW fundamentally unbalanced the already-unbalanced system?
>>
>>52294264
Yeah because half of Pathfinder players think that Deadly Agility is broken.

I mean, I'd be open to tacking on a +6 base attack requirement, but then you have the other frothing retards who think it should be free because "muh martial balance" which means fluffing up martials to do the same insane shit that Pathfinder casters do.

>>
>>52294272
I play 5e for my normal group. I'll start playing 5e with /tg/ when /5eg/ starts hosting thinly veiled fetish games, thank you very much.
>>

Pathfinder is only as unbalanced as Modern MTG is
>>
>>52294272
My group got bored with 5e.
>>
>>52294293

I kinda like how SoM is suggesting handling it, where you can grab the weapon finesse talent and get a damage boost if you use dex to attack but strength to damage. It worked OK for the Vigilante, as I recall.

I've been kind of interested in how PoW seems to make dexterity builds much stronger but looking over SoM it looks like dex characters get BTFO by strength characters.
>>
>>52294296
Reach is your friend. Never play a character without a reach option. The real memes start when you play an Aberrant bloodrager, cast Elongated arms and Enlarge person with a reach weapon at level 4.
>>
>>52294272
Because that small set of options is still bigger than the ones in 5e.

Like it's a shitty system, but 5e is just fucking boring to build and play in.

>>52294293
It IS. Slightly. In some cases.
The issue is that Weapon Finesse/Deadly Agility versus Prodigious TWF/Double Slice results in the Dex build being plain BETTER, as they get their attack/damage stat to initiative and armor class.

I mean, maybe that's not broken. I'm just salty about the only option for swole builds being Brutal Slayer.
>>
>>52294296

They're fine! Greatswords are technically better, but only by 1-2 damage per hit which is honestly worthless in the scheme of things.

Grab that bardiche and have fun!

How many disciplines do you think should an initiator be using? Do you usually stick to one, maybe two or three, or do you spread out your choices to grab bits from any useful discipline you have available?
>>
>>52294403
Because it's Japanese, anon. How the hell are you supposed to know how to use a weapon if the instructions are in another language?

>>52294407

>>
>>52294406

Innate Bonus Progression are innate abilities you get as you level up.

For example, it says Resistance +1 at level 2? When you hit level 2 you get a +1 to all your saves.
>>
>>52294411
I usually take whatever's the most thematically appropriate for the kind of fighting style I want. But then, I tend to pick classes and disciplines based on what kind of fighting game character I want to emulate.
>>
>>52294272
There's still more toys here than in 5e, even after you strip away all the garbage filler.
>>
>>52294411
I generally run three or four, sometimes five if I feel like going all in on versatility (Although it's a pain to keep all disciplines being able to grab the higher level maneuvers)
A couple time's I've grabbed only enough Scarlet Throne maneuvers to get Sanguine Perseverance, then dropped the discipline afterwards.

Is makeup expensive?
>>
>>52294272
1) Bounded accuracy is a trap option. You can go this far, no farther, ever. Except it's a lie when you get into magic of course.

2) PF CR is passable, especially if you know about Monster Roles (most people here don't). 5ed CR makes 3.5 CR look like a sustainable idea, and everyone knows it was a bad, bad, bad joke (see 18th level wizard with 9th level spells at CR 11 - you're supposed to fight that with 9th level characters? Sure.)

3) You can only play until 20th level. No you can't go further. Bounded Accuracy and the lack of information on how to actually create CR appropriate (see joke above) monsters is not public yet. You may as well start over.

4) "It's balanced" is a bigger lie than it is in PF. At least PF has finally moved on to admitting tier 3 is where it's best at and almost everything since Advanced Class Guide has emphasized this fact, including newer archetypes.

5) WotC has consistently fucked up every game they've worked on, starting with 3.0 and never ending. They have had to fire and hire and fire again just about everyone who they wanted to work for them because they fucked up shit worse than it already was.

6) I like PF. I don't like 5ed. Pretty much the only reason I need, but you were being pedantic and kind of a dick.
>>
>>52294637

Depends on the makeup.

Are you going for Witcher 3, or Mass Effect Andromeda?

>>
>>52294403
It's a club that weigh 10 pounds and is 6' long. That requires a little more than just strength to use it effectively if you don't want your guts spilled by someone with a short sword stepping inside your reach.
>>
>>52294662

In what terms?

I prefer Witcher 3.
>>
>>52294665

It was a BAMBOOZLE by someone who might be in CAHOOTS with the DM!
>>
>>52294670
Basically, yes. You select the item that suits the slot, and when you buy the item, you also get the associated bonus that the protective version of that item normally gives. I.E. if you buy a ring of Spell Storing, you also get the power of a Ring of Deflection as an innate bonus to that ring without paying actual cost for a ring of deflection of the appropriate wealth level. Shoulder slot items grant resistance, and bracers can grant armor bonus, and amulets grant natural armor bonuses, while belts and headbands give enhancements to stats.
>>
>>52294703

I'd say that would be 5-20 gp worth of makeup.

Don't worry, the deadline is only for the basic concept, the sheets don't need to completed. The page is pretty descriptive but I fucked it up the first time I read it so I'll give a casual summary.

When an item is over a certain value threshold, you add X to its value as listed on the table and add a bonus to it based on its slot. I personally am running a house-rule whereby you can just buy the stat boost without buying the item to go with it, adding on the cost of an actual item on later.

Let's say I wanna buy a Robe of Useful Items, 7000gp. It's a body slot item which means it enhances physical ability scores. It's in the 4,000gp to 9,999gp range so it's +2 to a physical ability score and adds 4000gp to the price. The item's total value is 13,000gp.

Now, let's say you only have 6000gp and you really want that ability score boost now but can't afford the item. Instead I'm allowing you to spend 4000gp to get the +2 physical ability score bonus, and then upgrade it to the Robe of Useful Items letter with 7000gp.

It's a little clunky, I might revise it before I actually run. I apologise to anyone that I explained this to incorrectly before.

Currently using a Tetsubo for fun in the AP my group is running. It can be a lot of fun when you one-shot something with the occasional x4 crit, although sometimes it irks my GM and the rest of the table when I randomly solo centerpiece after centerpiece because my rolls happen to be on fire that session.

That said, some of the other players are considering picking up the Butterfly's Sting feat, and at that point I fear it's gonna push over into annoying gimmick territory and shred my DM's last bit of sanity.

Why does the "To Protest the Government" reason for protest in Hell's Rebels give a bonus to Bluff and Intimidate?

Intimidate might be appropriate for moving people into action. But bluff over diplomacy makes no sense to me here.

Well, to be fair, plasma damage is complete shit in pathfinder.

You take the weapon's damage, and split it in two. Half of it fire, Half of it electrical. each of the halves goes against hardness and its own resistances/immunities separately, so by the time you can afford even the cheapest plasma weapon it basically does nothing to anyone or anything, and then you'll start running into outsiders who shrug off even more or possibly heal from the stuff instead.

I'm thinking of making my own campaign traits for a game.

How should the payoff for them work? Is it enough to just tie the PCs to the game and ensure that they won't want to just go "fuck this imma be a pirate"? Should the trait have a specific scene tied into it? Or should it keep having its payoff all the way to the end, only really getting resolved at the climax of the campaign?

How busted would a "True Admixture" sphere advanced talent that converts effects from Half X Half Y damage to X and Y damage?
>>
>>52296389

So making it 4e multi-element rather than 3.5? Not very.
>>
>>52296389
>How busted would a "True Admixture" sphere advanced talent that converts effects from Half X Half Y damage to X and Y damage?

It effectively doubles damage, which is a bit better than a maximize meta-magic feat. If it cost a few spell points, it would be a reasonable include. Wouldn't need to be advanced though.
>>
>>52296389
Keep in mind, that change doesn't make your blaster deal more damage, just makes it damage more consistently. If your GM really needs to shut you down then they can just give it resistance/immunity to both energy types.

>>52296464
Or maybe I'm misunderstanding, not sure if it's doubling damage or just changing the type from "Half Fire, Half Electricity," to "Fire and Electricity."
>>
>>52296464
>It effectively doubles damage,
What? I feel like you misread or misunderstand how admixture works.

Say you combine an Ice and Fire blast

Regular admixture would make the damage half ice and half fire. Counted separately.

This admixture would make the attack count as both fire and ice.
>>
>>52296483
Well, "admixture" in 3.5 was a metamagic that added the new type's damage to your old one. So an admixture style feat would change, say, a 6d6 plasma hit into 6d6 fire AND 6d6 electricity.

What you are thinking of more likely is just changing "half x half y" into "x AND y", like how a morningstar is b AND p.

* - My pick for the final team
^ - incomplete or incompatible

Alexa Jones - Because Alex Jones is a real person! Get it? It's funny!

Metlee* - Tiefling free captain just trying to get her ship back

Winston* - A reasonable man in unreasonable times.

Ji Mahn - It sounds like G-man, which makes it funny.

Rhea - A wandering barbarian searching for a lost friend, caught up in events far beyond her control.

Jacques - He's coming out of retirement for one last job...

Noel/Scarlet* - A nobleman with unexplained ties to a local family; and one of Kintargo's up and coming starlets.

Virius - "Virius is a boring man"

Reina - A doggo looking for her lost master. Duo app with Var.

Var - An orphan that's holding fast to the people he's got.

Rain - an undine bard looking for a big break; has a penchant for cross-dressing.

Hana* - Gamer Girl overcompensating for her personal failings.

Varashk - Communist Lizard Hipster. Used to be Batman.

Estelle* - Doggo memes, maid memes, smol memes, and punch girl memes all in one. Despite that, not half-bad.

Sophia* - Opparan Noble Catgirl Warlord. Used to be an Aasimar, which made much more sense.

Gilbert - Horc Alchemist and proprietor of the worst bar in Kintargo.

Katrana^ - Is a Sorcerer, despite the guidelines.

Laurentius - If Starman was an Angel.

Ichabod - DHB's most depressing character yet.

Hot new fluff rewrites/explanations

'Cus I just got asked about it, I'll clarify a few things

Nightwalkers are like 1/1000 born, generally created by one of the gods. The True Gods are a bit busy, that's why there's so few. If a False God made a nightwalker, they did it with an ulterior motive. But, Nightwalkers are really hard to kill, so infant mortality isn't an issue. Most villages have a Nightwalker in their midst, whether they realize it or not. Cities have plenty, but typically are contracted, hidden, or busy. That is, if they even realize they're a Nightwalker.

A single monster can be fended off by a human who knows how to fight, and has a moonsilver weapon. This is mostly because near-immortal monsters have no good reason to fight the one thing that can kill them. Tome Manifestations are another matter, they take a party of Nightwalkers, all with Moonsilver. Or a small army without.

I, for one, rather enjoyedI 2hu's backstory. It was not stellar by any means, but it was good enough and fun in that silly way. Like, take a weird premise and make something out of it. Maybe that's because I generally like unusual characters and have a very high tolerance for Mary Sues and animu bullshit. Hell, my own character is a descendant of halflings, blinkdgos and fey. She has wild magic powers allowing her to control life, death and elements, she is protected by both light (animus) and darkness (blinkling racial trait) and she is also a dog girl maid. Sadly, all this chuuni potential will be probably left underutilized.

I am also kinda sad Metlee didn't make it in.

[sad trombone honks vanishing into the distance]

Next up, Drummond Stathman, which I only realised now was missing off my dice rolling list!

>village in bumfuck nowhere has a giant library of books and this kid learns all from book reading
>then everything changed when the merchant nation attacked
>Tome monster knocks out the kid and kills everyone, but then suddenly four nightwalkers pop out of the air and he helps them execute it
>he turns into a badass gun toting mageshooter monster hunter under their tution in a mysterious monastary and even manages to take all their books which weren't looted or turned into a monster cavern or anything with him
>but also he thinks monstergirls aren't bad so tries to redeem monstergirls and shoots them if they refuse to be good

I'm of two minds about this app; unsure whether it's so bad it's good, and it's so bad it's terrible. Of all the apps I've reviewed so far, this one seems like the most mary sue-like. Even including Sage, who's a pyromaniac buddha, Maice, perfect femdom queen bitch and Cashmere, top ranking of the magical academy due to her special clothing magic techniques.

I suspect that's because he's the only one to have assisted in attacking the tome monster, which to be fair isn't out of the possibility of happening, and possibly because he becomes an expert monster hunter and at the same time after everyone he cares about has been killed by monsters, he somehow thinks that they can be redeemed. They might be able to, but it just seems somewhat out of place that while being trained to kill monsters, he's also questioning it due to... reading too many books? It really jars.

THE GOOD: TOTALLY CUHRAZEE- wait, this is more grimdark than DMC.

THE BAD: Seriously feels too Mary Sue, especially compared with the rest of the apps. While settingswise a nightwalker can pretty easily go through monsters one at a time, him becoming a ruthless hunter doesn't feel like it'd be good for longevity, and the idealism in his personality doesn't seem to come from any single point. Where's all this goodwill towards monsterkind coming from? Perhaps there was a chance meeting of a monster that didn't attack? Perhaps he read a particular book? So far I'm not seeing where this gunman's last chance philosophy is coming from.

Other than that, seriously, where did the 4 nightwalkers come from? Were they just picking berries in the bushes and then their nightwalker senses started tingling or something? For that matter, how exactly did a tiny village get a huge library? How did it get a mage? Neither of those things are likely to be in a village to begin with.

>Appeal: 3/5 Virgil the Mageshooter.
>Backstory: 2/5
>Compatibility: 4/5 Ranged striker, debuffer, bit of face stuff. Can probably do ok in most groups. There may be some conflicts about seeing if sentient monsters can be let go, but at least that's interesting conflict.
>Setting accuracy: 3/5 Again, while there's monsters killing of hordes of people, the whole backstory of being in a nightwalker mercenary group doesn't sit well with me. Probably since he's apparently soloing enemies while the veterans are going out in groups of 4.
>Sexual potential: 4/5 Could easily be seduced, and that's going to work out great for everyone involved!

DEAD RELATIVES COUNT: EVERYONE. At least 2 parents.

THINGS TO LOOK AT: I'd personally suggest making the village into a town, and that solves most problems. Why are the nightwalker squad here? Town was a source of replenishment. Why a library? Town would have one. Mage? Town.

If not a town, then perhaps not having the nightwalkers pop out of nowhere might be better. Perhaps Drummond knows he's outmatched but can't leave the monster alone so follows it, and attacks only during the battle. Other than that, he really needs a reason why he thinks monstergirls are redeemable. Put in something more than "he read too many books".

Next up, Sigmund Caine. Probably tomorrow.

This thing ends single-creature encounters. DC 20 reflex save on a golem works 4/5 times and you'll have at least 8 rounds for everyone to lob snowballs, orisions, etc at the thing until it dies. DC 30 climb check required on a creature with 0 skills and a +9 strength mod?
