Update for some reason. Added a couple of things that I couldn't decide if they were OP or not, but I like the idea of them, so I added them.

Do your prefer CYOAs that allow for as much choice as possible, or ones that are specialized yet more polished?

Some CYOAs like the famous Necromancer one, are small and polished, but loved by everyone. Some of the large worldbuilders and also famous, while being generally unfocused. Other CYOAs are far TOO focused to appeal to anyone but a very select group, and suffer for it. Others play themselves too large and excel at nothing.

So is less more when designing a CYOA, or is it choice above all? Obviously there's a balance to the two extremes, so share your thoughts about this dichotomy of choice vs niche.

I'm currently planning some OC now, so advice for a creator's perspective is also especially helpful.

I like CYOAs of all sizes.
The only thing that I can think of is that some CYOAs simply 'click' with a whole lot of anons at once.
It's an indescribable spark, and if your CYOA has it, it becomes legendary and sort of immortal, like Elvis, Michael Jackson, Freddy Mercury, and David Bowie.
If it doesn't, it fades into obscurity faster than MC Hammer.

People waited for the latest Necromancer for… what, a year?
And you saw the responses. People last their fucking minds, damn near.
Conduit has been due for an overhaul for probably going on 3 years now, and people are still patiently waiting.
They have the spark. But what that spark is, I couldn't say exactly.

it's all about the choices, worldbuilding is nice but shouldn't be the main draw & is quite honestly unnecessary considering the number of CYOAs which don't even bother creating a new setting
also it's nice to have a number of different categories (setting, power, companion, equipment, etc) to allow for more variety than just "choose 3 from the following"

but i'd say the most important thing is to make something you like; since you aren't going to be paid for this anyway you better enjoy the time you spend making it regardless of what others think

The most useful aspect of the purple book is that it has spells that make you, your minions and your valuable shit completely invisible or at least hidden from the other school's undead minions, as well as pass them off as normal living folk, Which pretty much allows you to practice necromancy in cities or places with low discretion or just go under the radar of more powerful necromancers; they have to physically search for you themselves or get living minions to flush you out of your cover and that's kind of hard if you invested any amount of time to building a good reputation or secure a social/political or religious position with some authority.

Or you know just be a good or well liked person, donate to charity, pay tribute to the local lords and duchies, give proper patronage to the aristocracy and their courts, while advocating for populist opinions and sentiments the common folk want to hear and do things to improve their lot in life, respect the rule of the land and conduct business with a modicum of common decency respecting all parties and clients involved. Practice necromancy on pests and vermin and even the city low-lives that nobody will miss, their disappearance will dramatic improve the quality of life in the community.

Some Necromancers just aren't interested in domination or empire building, they just want to spend their immortality in the pursuit of knowledge and for essence of creation itself.

Not that guy, but to be fair. One of my favorite RP characters of all time was a Necromancer who was basically half artist, half scientist. He spent most of his time making new "types" of undead.

We, my bride and I, are kings and queens over a large verdant realm, akin to rolling hills and steep mountains with few valleys and plateaus to truly settle in. Our kingdom resides in the great city of Langeburg, sitting in a valley in between the two tallest mountains, Huggin and Munnin that are a part of the Wodin mountain range.
The people are Germanic, practice the traditional religion, and there are large sentient Bears that live in the land.
The main 'Nasties' are represented by an Undead Plague, that will corrupt humans and animals alike, turning them into Zombies.
This plague is spread through the normal means.
There is a Great Legion (The Honor Gaurd) led by 10 Huscarls who are granted Power Armor.
The Artificer armor the Bride and I have is power armor of ornate design, and both of us are near Astartes level warriors.
Her with a Spear and speed are a natural balance to my Axe and strength.

Characters dying due to being Kamen Rider is fairly common. Garren and the Wolf Orphenoch come to mind.

Currently the idea is that modified humans start out the strongest but don't usually get upgrades or versatility, ala Showa Riders.

Tech Riders like G3 and IXA start out relative weak but can be upgraded and are much more customizable.

Magic are like Kuuga, who have upgrades and higher forms, but unlike tech Riders, their forms are set. So you can't develop specialized weapons to deal with specific monsters of the week, ala Fourze. They start out weak, can get stronger but aren't as adaptable as tech riders.

Hybrid Riders are guys like W, whose main difference from monsters is that they have Drivers to safely harness the power. These guys need to defeat monsters to gain new powers? Where Tech and Magic Riders can increase their base stats in the sense of having upgraded armor/forms (G3-X/Amazing Mighty), Hybrids depend on Megamanning.
