Yes to 'hit' and to 'wound' are separate things, so you can cause no 'wounds' and still count it as a 'hit'.

Use some of Dark Heresys tweaks to combat, like initative.

Don't be afraid to get npcs running away if combats are drawing on or they are losing. No fighting to the death every time

Don't over test things and encourage players to be descriptive in combat

My current campaign started with the players accidentally smuggling 'Dark Wine' a la The Wine of Dreams and tasting some of it without knowing what it was.
Long story short, it's created in a special place by Slaaneshi cultists. The PCs were plagued by daemonic dreams and had to track the wine back to its source to find a cure. This involved a lot of conspiracy and dealing with smugglers, infiltrating a slaaneshi masquerade that went all Eyes Wide Shut and dealing with some disturbing peasants who had a Crastor's Keep-style relationship with beastmen.

Something I might do at some point is adapt a short story from Night's Dark Masters where the PCs are caught in a plague quarantine and have to solve a mystery while they're confined, potentially searching for the source of the plague. Lots of horror potential there.

>>
>tfw since GW trashed the setting you can go wild with headcanon and make up all kinds of backgrounds that were never developed

I've been working on some stuff for Caledor recently, about the time before it was called Caledor, at the time it would have been just named "Land of Dragons" or "Land of Fire" and be divided into multiple petty kingdoms, whose kings would often go to war with each other and the lands outside caledor with armies of dragonborne warriors. The land was eventually divided up into 16 larger kingdoms, and the great rulers were known as the 16 Dragons, altough the greatest among them would be Caledor, who was not only a Dragon Rider but also a Wizard without equals, and so it came about that one after another the 15 other rulers were either defeated in battle, or swore servitude to Caledor peacefully. The last petty King to fall was the old and wise King Daugandrir, known as the Green Dragon, who held his petty Kingdom surrounded on three sides by the Annuulii mountains, impassable even on Dragonback, in his Kingdom lived the Green Fire Dragons of legend, with less than 100 of them his warriors repelled more than 600 of Caledors Dragon riders, but took horrible losses doing so. With less than 30 able to fight, the old King decided to surrender, his second son, Prince Dendrion was furious at this decision and took all remaining Dragon Riders as well as any green Dragons fit for flight, and led them in a great exodus to the east beyond the great Sea. It is said he proclaimed that "the Green Dragon will never be Servant to Another." The only Green Fire Dragons that remained in his Fathers Kingdom were the ones either too young or too old to leave, and the badly wounded of the previous battles. Those too eventually faded into obscurity and have long since either died in battle or retreated into the deep caves of the Annuulii mountains. The old King Daugandrir accepted subjugation and Caledor would forever after be known as the Dragontamer.
>>
>>52065284

Wasn't Andy Hall the editor of White Dwarf once over? That must have been a blast from the past.
>>
>>52065301
after his surrender the old King Daugandrir would be demoted to Lord due to the small size of his Kingdom. He would not live to see the coming of Chaos to the World and with his death the era of the green fire dragons had also ended in Ulthuan.

Of what happened to Prince Dendrion little is known, tales say he led his host of Dragons east in search for a new homeland, though where is not clear. Some say he took them south at the World Edge Mountains and settled in the Southlands, others claim he went further east beyond the Dark Lands, and some even say he went as far as Cathay and beyond. It can be expected that his journey was not successful, though, as none of the green fire dragons have been sighted in ages, and the only mentions of them are of dubious sailor reports and fantastic tales.

They dreamt of bacchanals under the light of morrslieb involving beastmen and witches and two-headed dwarves and presided over by an opium-smoking, wine-drinking satyr sitting in a tree-throne.

The satyr was a representation of Slaanesh, but I didn't make that explicit. The PCs just kept finding carvings they assumed depicted Taal, except they had goat horns instead of antlers.

Say, does anyone have information about houserules for WHFRP? I've been looking at the weapons and have noticed how underwhelming a lot of them seem to be. Would it be a good idea to replace the Impact quality of Great Weapons with simply making its damage SB+2, making Demilances SB+1 and Lances SB+2 with Tiring causing those to become SB? What about adjusting the Damage of various ranged weapons so that they match the tabletop (Javelins become SB with 24 max, 12 short etc.).

Noob that had only really played the Total War game here with a question that I'm sure has more to do with balance and race specialization, but it's there a fluff reason behind why Brettonia gets proper gryphons for their knights and the Empire does not?
>>
>>52069932
It's probably just balance and giving Bretonnia a new toy. Large groups of hippogryph knights did not exist for Bretonnia before Total War; before that they were an occasional mount choice for Lords and for Leoun.

If you're asking about why Bretonnians get Hippogryphs and the Empire gets Griffons, I'm not really sure. Hippogryphs are more common in the Grey Mountains, so Bretonnia has easier access to them, but they're also absurdly difficult to train - a knight that wants one literally cannot let anyone else handle the hippogryph in his stead. Griffons might be a bit easier to care for, or more common outside the Grey Mountains - the Empire isn't as limited as to where they could get them.
>>
>>52066335
It's good, but I'll probably try to edit it further. Historically, mail was used in combination with plate (though it eventually got phased out).
>>

That's it, they wanted to give empire monstrous cavalry so made up Demi-griffons. Several years after total war wanted to give bretonia more troop choices so gave them better griffons.

So with Lorebook having dropped, we now know why Clan Fester is working with Rasknitt. They have a disease called the brood plague, which apparently renders brood mothers sterile and is at least somewhat contagious. Not even the plaguemongers of Pestilens could cure it.

Now there's a weapon against skavenkind.

first they are hippogryphs, not griphons, and second bretonnia only has them so they get a hard hitting monstrous unit.

Unlike Storm of Chaos, old GW knew to set events in the past so it didn't matter the outcome or like Albion/Lustrian in some far off place.

The campaign boxes are written to play first and foremost. After writing the rules, they held an actual game between the devs to decide the canon version.

Helgar sides with whoever wins more of the preceding skirmishes in the actual playing of it. Since the Elf dev lost 2/3, she canon sides against him.

I know they have a horse boner, but I don't see why some knights wouldn't want to ride a Demigryph, or why they wouldn't exist in Bretonnia.

Peagsi at least fluffwise make sense in squad-level numbers - they're hard to raise, since you have to actually raise them in scenarios where they're forced to fly, otherwise their wings atrophy - but you can let peasants do half the work, and you can actually buy young foals if you can afford to not send someone into the mountains.

Hippogryphs are pretty violent, and especially challenging is that you can never let anyone aside from the rider care for him, otherwise they just won't respect him. The rider has to make a commitment to having that animal and can't just pick him from a stable of other hippogryphs like he might a horse or pegasus. And getting a hippogryph chick sucks, since a peasant has to climb up into the mountains and get an egg, probably while risking getting attacked by angry hippogryph parents. It'd be hard to get enough of them for a squad.
>>
>>52076788
Why did she side in-universe?

She felt massive shame seeing Elves easily slaughter Dwarfs. She lead non-Dwarfs to kill her kin, men who had fought for her until they abandoned her over the course of a few months. She knew they'd all lose anyway, but figured that at least trying to help would absolve her of guilt (or blame).

Picture a civil war that has only gone on for a few weeks (Dwarf reckoning of time, remember). Your countrymen, enemy as they are, being brutally wiped out by a third party that you got into the war would still hurt you deep down. Her acting on that feeling is retarded, but its easy to see why she wanted to in the first place.

the "Hippogryph" squad we see in TWWH is basically all the Kingdoms Hippogryph riders teamed up in one unit. They are not some knights but Counts, Dukes or at least Barons, same with the Royal Pegasus riders, they are at the very least Grail Knights.

And Hippogryphs are extremely proud and violent, but also extremely intelligent.

I like to think that griffons and hippogryphs are thick as shit but that people imagine them as noble and intelligent for nationalistic reasons (especially griffons, being the heraldry of the Empire). Like lions and bald eagles.

So if you ask a sigmarite priest they will extol the virtues of the mighty Imperial Griffon, while if you ask the Baron's hook-handed stablemaster, he's like Hodgesaargh from Discworld and will give you the whole 'let me tell you about griffons' spiel.

Never really saw many Slayers in 8th. Maybe it was because the models were horrible. Can't comment on the unit but for God's sake buy the Avatars of War models. The old metal ones are for collectors only.
>>
>>52079046
Models were great. Part of the long-suffering of Dwarf players is one of the most interesting parts of fluff and better models were so shit.
>>

>>
>>52079046
I have 80 of the old metal ones.

I like them.

Also I would run a unit of slayers because it was turning into monster hammer and they were a good fire magnet.

My war machines and thunderers are fragile.
>>
>>52076506

For you're Conquistador Vampire, I would check out Avatars of War Empire range. They are more based on Spain than the GW's Landsknecht design.

As for the Necromancer. Somebody a few threads ago pointed out Freebooter's miniatures range of Amazons. Some of them look quite sinister, I would definitely check them out. One is covered in a giant spider and another has a crocodile head on.

Look forward to seeing more of the project.

How can humans survive in Sylvania, if the land is so barren, dark and twisted?

Are they worse off than the peasantry of Bretonnia?
>>
>>52080824
Fantasy was based on D&D mixed with historicals, Glorantha, and Moorcock.

40k was based on Judge Dredd, Paradise Lost, Warhammer Fantasy, and Starship Troopers.

on average life in sylvania is worse than life in bretonnia, beyond the obvious mistreatment and general shitty life, Bretonnia as a land is rather nice. And the peasants are rather well protected overall.

Sylvania has it's ups and downs too, some places are worse than others, but generally it's a dark and brooding country, also very marshy like moussillon. But if you take away the midnight aristocracy, it's not so different from life in Stirland.

Vlad's main bag was that his taxes were very low (he had almost no use for anything unskilled laborers would make or grow). Sylvania is a very marginal land: naturally, because of all the moors and the thin soil, but also because it seems to exist in a natural dhar trap and the soil has a high concentration of warpstone.

Without nobles cheese-ratting their harvests away, Sylvanians could eke out a somewhat less marginal existence than ever before, and unlike the nobility, vampires promote: it's rare enough to be rounded down to zero, but it's still not zero.

Demi-gryph Knights will make mincemeat of them.

Large block of 10 x 5 halberds will do better than any other core.

Cannons will really hurt them.

In regards to Greatswords... as much as I love them they're not a great unit. I still take them though but you pretty much have to have them in a 10 x 4 block to get anything out of them. A 4+ save and their priority will see them dying by the bucket-load before they get into combat.

Also, thanks! Here's my first bit of work done.

I suppose the Skinks would be based around those found in caves, and would be sort of loyal to the Necromancer. The idea would be sort of like her forcing the Spawning Pool to release the unused embryo's with Dhar magic, in hopes to spawn actual lizardmen. However, the embryo's are tainted with magic, producing the twisted Albino skinks instead, barely intelligent creatures loyal to their adopted "Slann"

The only thing that was definitely an elf was the Fey Enchantress, which doesn't really mean much. There isn't anything off about an elf worshipping a human goddess. It's rare, sure, but not completely out of the realm of possibility.

Besides, the very nature of gods/warp entities prevents her being someone else. The Bretonnians have worshipped her since ancient times and that worship creates a presence in the warp. It's the same way Sigmar became a god, even though Sigmar the man died long ago. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times; GW had to change the rules of the setting to make their hack story work.
>>
>>52098002
She can't have been created from worship because she was already there when Gilles met her
>>
>>52098126
The Lady predates her meeting with Gilles. It was only after the formation of the kingdom that the religion built around her was made the state faith.

Her meeting with Gilles is simply the first time she chose to meet with mortals, as he, Landuin and Theirulf were the first Grail Knights.
>>
>>52098149
Really?
I never heard about this, thought the story was Gilles met the lady before that critical battle and only after that bretonnians started worshiping her.
>>
>>52097958
Could have been Isha tho. Could have been just about any female goddess - a mistaken Shallya or Verena.
>>
>>52098202
The idea that Bretonnia barely worships other gods bothers me. Making Bretonnia essentially monotheistic makes it rather boring - not because monotheistic religions are boring, real history proves different, but because they then lose all flavor outside of the narrow spectrum of society that gets represented in rulebooks.
>>
>>52098837
I think you're reading into it wrong. It isn't saying that the ancient, and modern day, Bretonnians were monotheistic, only that the Lady was their prime deity back then as it is in the current year. Hell, the primary temple of Shallya is based in Courrone, Bretonnia. Then there is also the Abbey de Maisontaal. Bretonnians still worship the other human gods, save Sigmar obviously, but the Lady always comes first for the nobility.
>>
>>52098837
Bretonnia is nowhere near monotheistic. Read Knights of the Grail. Even nobles trust Morrite priests completely with their dead. Bretonnia has more shrines and Shallyan faithful than anywhere else in the world (literally one of the only things Bretonnian peasants won't tolerate is being farther than a day's walk from some shrine or temple). Taal & Rhya are respected, especially by peasants. Manaan is a big deal, bigger than the Lady in some places.
>>
>>52097718

Nah. Usually something non-cannon can be used an information on how a character would act in a similar situation even if it didn't happen.

But in this instance GW really didn't give a flying fuck about End Times and so they just wrote anything to wrap the series up and squeeze money out of people who thought this was the road to 9th edition.

For this reason it can be completely disregarded. It is for all intents and purposes an alternative timeline. Storm of Chaos is the cannon 'End Times'.
>>
>>52098869
>>52098913
But it very clearly says 'other gods,' as in multiple, 'such as those of the empire,' which are Taal, Morr, etc, 'gained a small foothold' 'on the fringes of Bretonnian territory.' So they are not worshiped widely in Bretonnia.
>>
>>52098977
Read Knights of the Grail. You are wrong.
>>
>>52098977
It also mentions this was far, far in the past. 'Stone age' which means after the Warp Gates collapsed. Obviously that has changed.
>>
>>52098977

It just means primacy. The Lady is the prime Goddess in all those interior regions. She's the default there but if a crop fails or someone dies they have specific Gods.

It means only on the fringes of Bretonnia will you find a town where Shallya is the main God and is worshipped as much as, or more, than the lady of the lake. Probably areas very far from the large cities where worship of a specific god predates the state of Bretonnia.
>>
>>52098987
I'm not going to hold a story over what's being clearly stated in what I assume must be some rulebook fluff.
>>
>>52099016
>>52099022
It says 'worship of this goddess,' i.e. the Lady, existed since stone age times. It also makes it clear by 'still reigns supreme' that other gods have not overtaken the worship of her, and only have 'a small foothold.'
>>
>>52098202
>>52098837
I thought that was only for nobles?
Weren't peasants forbidden from worshiping the lady, at least in churches or anywhere official?
>>
>>52099028
Knights of the Grail was the last published Bretonnian sourcebook.

Look, if you aren't actually interested in a setting with lore, I'm sure the AoS General could use a new poster, or one of the 20 Magic threads.
>>
>>52099060

Where does it say that 'reigns supreme' means monotheism? 'Supreme' by it's definition means the highest ranking, not the only.
>>
>>52099071
In older lore, yes. In last modern lore, no.

Peasants still prefer Shallya.
>>
>>52099060
That doesn't mean that you don't pay respects to Manann when boarding a sailing ship or give thanks to Shallya when your wife has a healthy child. The Lady is dominant, not the only god.

>>52099071
The guy who wrote the book couldn't make up his mind as the army book clearly has peasants worshipping her, while his novels has them weirdly outlawed.
>>
>>52099095
They make it clear that worship of other deities barely exists in Bretonnia - on the fringes of their territory. It's not truly monothestic because that small inclusion, but it might as well be.
>>
Honestly i quite like the lady being an elven goddess, makes for an interesting situation.
>>
>>52099150

It really doesn't make it clear at all though and there's tons of evidence to show all Gods are worshipped with the Lady of the Lake being the Queen of Gods for them.

Again, nearly every polytheistic religion has a prime God, that's what it's talking about.

I can't put it better that I've put it here. >>52099060 There is a clear sense that 'still,' as in the present, the Lady is the dominant deity in a 99% sense.
>>
>>52099174

It was always heavily implied and I don't really mind it but I think it was better when it had some mystery to it.
>>
>>52099174
It was a bit of a mystery, yes, but there was a little wiggle room with how the cosmology of the setting worked on if the Lady had become a human deity in her own right or not. Things had never been made clear on where the difference between Elven and Human deities began.
>>
>>52099293
She still reigns supreme, but that's it. She isn't the sole god. Video games is the dominant form of entertainment in some places, but that doesn't mean tvs and movies cease to exist there. They simply have little influence in Bretonnia because the cult of the Lady is the main religion of the nobility who hold all the power.

Hi, I am getting my first game of WHFB tomorrow 8th edition and I am working on a 1000 point empire list. I probably need help making a functional list but I am asking for cheese as well, not Stank+life wizard bad but good pointers as I will explain later.

The list I have made in my mind, nothing solid but I have a small Empire collection so most things I can do unless you are recommending bricks a 30 greatswordsmen.

Lords: 109
Arch Lector great weapon, heavy Armour, ulrik cloak 159
Heroes: 218
battle wizard Probably beasts as I am a fan of their signature
BSB griffon banner, full plate, and shield 153
Core: 412
32 Spearmen with shields and full command 228 with 2 detactments
10 hand gunners 90
10 crossbows 90
Special:
5 Pistoliers 90
1 mortar 100
985

The list might be illegal as I am not exactly sure if detachment size limit is per detachment or total. The musician for the pistoliers seem rather redundant DESU, the main advantage of swift reform seems a lot less useful on fast cav. The biggest problem is the fact that I have made a deathstar out a shitty unit and mortars apparently suck.

The opponent is a guy with a bit of a plastic crack addiction and has multiple armies but I am predicting Dwarfs as all he does when he talks about the subject is cheesy, dangerously cheesy Dwarf lists: Napoleon McBlownapart and crushing a Skaven player so hard he quit WHFB before he really started and he did with an unkillable lord on the shield mount claiming 2+ rerollable ward, which I sincerely doubt; probably a T6 dwarf lord with a rerollable 1+ armour and maybe a ward save, but probably not given that dawnstone, helm or rune, leaves little room for a ward and an ogre blade.

Basically I am expecting cheese so without institutional knowledge from having a WHFB group to call upon I am rather paranoid given all I know about dwarves is the Miniwargaming series. Hammerers and volley guns

1/2
>>
>>52100526
2/2

the list would probably go light years if I swapped up the heroes up by having the lector get downgraded to warrior priest and the wizard going up to Lord.
>>
>>52100526

Well you seem to know your onions, so I don't need to say much. You know mortars are a pretty specific weapon, maybe have a use against Skaven but against Dwarfs I doubt it will do much.

One of the problems I have is that you have no hammer unit. Spears will tie the enemy up a bit and poke a few to death but where's the meat? Where's the killers at?

At 1000 points I would go

Wizard Lord

Warrior priest

30 Spearmen
+ detachment of 20 halberds

Demi-Gryph Knights

Pistoliers may do something against his warmachines

To be honest, your opponent sounds like a bit of a bellend. I would always go easy on people just getting in, it's usually fun to give stuff a run out that usually stays on the shelf. Also, at 1000 points Warhammer is about as balanced as a seesaw, so again no point in bringing the cheese.
>>
>>52099665
Just in general. Stuff like Wurrzag looks like someone made it up. Neferata seems legit but is reallu full of jokes.
>>
>>52100714

Alternatively, Knights as core may be the way to go at that level. I suppose it depends which models you have.
>>
>>52086644
Never played, but Great swordsmen seem to be a way to deliver stubborn to core units; they don't seem very good in the grand view of things as comparing apples to apples makes them look bad in comparison to high elfs and dwarfs, but they are probably good against units that always strike last like them as the enemy will probably win combat, but you really hit them back as well. Maybe they get good if you stack them into a death star, but cavalry should do that better. Stubborn seems pretty great as they can tie stuff up pretty good with it. The problem I am thinking of is that most of the stuff you would want to throw them at rather then your other infantry will have initiative over them due to always strikes last (orks, ogres, and dwarves), but against armies with higher initiative they probably do well as they are armored unlike your pajama wearing foot slogging alternatives.
>>
>>52100866
Funnily enough in my original config I had a brick inner circle knights lead by general with Runefang; I'll look if I still have it, as it was a list I made months ago.
>>52100714
You are right; I guess better questions would be: is a BSB worth it at 1k as i will only have one major unit that if it breaks it is game anyway; and is bringing a lvl 4 wizard a shitty thing to do, even if it is against dwarves. I got 3 demis but 12 knights and general on horse so, I think a small inner circle brick is in the cards.
>>
>>52100793
1d4chan is really for once you're versed in the material.

They've been trying to stick to the lore more lately to avoid skub, but it really sucks they can't laugh at themselves more. I enjoyed bad jokes about Warhammer and fan theories and perspectives more than I ever did dry articles.
>>
>>52101166
Humour never hurt but they should have facts more in focus. I like the line about Lahmian vampires disguising themselves as cats so a guy takes them home where they transform themselves back into a woman and fug his brains out like it's an /ss/ comic.
>>
Kinky idea here what if I put my wizard in the pistolier unit? Now against dwarfs it seems a bit suicidal, but if they actually commit to combat they would die anyway, and having them as fast cav would be pretty tricky with a wizard.

I've seen people still playing in spots, and lots of people enjoy the setting if nothing else.

I can't really know what to recommend, because frustratingly among /tg/ hobbies, tabletop wargames are stuck on the tabletop until a good computer equivalent becomes available. You might not have anyone in your area, but someone two towns over might be interested in a game. Best you can do is try to get some attention at your local gamestore, maybe buy a pair of small armies so you can run trial games to see if people would be interested in playing.

I was the anon who told you about Luthor and the Vampire Coast a few days ago.

Lore-wise, I would make her an associate/assistant of Luthor Harkon - who can't reanimate undead anymore due to the backlash of the slann magic, so likely needs one. Vampires often have necromancers as apprentices (check out the stories in 6th edition undead army book if you can). In fact, it's never really explained how Luthor gets his zombies since the accident, so it would fit fairly well. Conquistador vampire is fine, you could have pirate thralls, or norscan as well (lots of new world explorers are norscans)

For your skellingtons, don't forget to give them some imperial gear as well.
For corpse carts, you could have zombies or skellies carrying small boats.
Lower necromancers as voodoo sorcerers

For your necromancer lord, you could probably look into Malifaux minis.
